Great Book!.......2006-05-18
Like many other reviews here, I have read many books lately on NDE's. Some books have touched me so deeply in my spirit that I couldn't get over it and just had to share the book. As a christian, the real testimony for me has been the powerful presence and truth of the Holy Spirit as I read the book. I felt the truth of this book, but if you're looking for alot of information about Heaven or life after death, you won't find it here. Don't put off reading it though. It's powerful. Great for a person who is losing a loved one to sickness or has just lost a loved one.
UPLIFTING..FILLS THE READER WITH HOPE AND JOY!.......2004-08-04
I first read this book in 1980. I will never forget how I felt as I read page after page of this woman's phoenominal experience. My father died in 1961 when I was only 11 years old and for the years that followed, my heart was filled with questions about the place he went to. As I read, I wept and laughed and felt that I was living her life.
The information of how to treat on who is close to transitioning from this world to the next is irreplacable. Because both my husband and I have been pastors and counsellors for many years, there have been times her testimony has been
very helpful in walking with those who are in the process of grief or are dealing with life and death matters.
This book is a hidden treasure. When the reader reads the story, they will be hesitant to give the book away, because, this is a book that can be read over and over again. Spritual truths and eternal principals can only be grasped as those who enquire are ready to understand and receive.
Even though this was written years ago, the story is fresh and applicable to any who desire to know what is beyond for those who prepare themselves.
My Fav. NDE Books - I've Been There Too.......2004-01-01
One day in 1995 I died, and had a NDE. Ever since then, I've been reading everything I can on the subject. According to most stories I've read, I had an unusual one, not going down a tunnel, but experiencing many interesting phenomena all the same. It seems to me that there are some NDE books and magazine articles that are just hype, and published just to give recognition. I have found, through my many years and multitudes of books on the subject, that there is an underlining truth and spirit that pervades the true experiences. So, I have compiled a list of my best reads for NDE books - ones that I consider genuine and adding validating light to the personal NDE experience. I have left out compilations, these are personal narratives. I hope you enjoy them too.

STIRRING!.......2003-09-27
I truly enjoyed this book, the story of one women and her walk through life's journey...until! I liked her openness about herself, her life style and her beliefs before her encounter with the hereafter and I enjoyed the wonderful transformation in her afterwards. I smiled at the faith of her Dad and the goodness of God to prepare her own husband for his soon crossing. God is so good! All in all I felt this book was very tender, showing the love God has for his children and His great, great mercy!
Walking in faith, hope and love.......2003-01-16
The greatest gift of the Lord is love. Betty shares her faith journey with us and how to overcome our selfish desires and let God be God in and through us. The Lord is the best teacher that we can follow and He so wants to love us into being. "Do not be afraid, I am with you always". Jesus.

Powerful, well-written and reassuring book!.......2007-09-18
I picked up this book at the Norfolk Public Library, where (God bless 'em), they have lots and lots of 1980s books in the 200 section. Stumbling across this book was a surprise, as I'd gone looking for something altogether different. But once I got home and started reading Betty's story, I couldn't put it down.
It's so well written that the words and stories flow seamlessly from one to the next. It's also so honest, as she tells about her frustrations with her mother-in-law and her husband and other family members. And it's compelling and I felt like I couldn't leave the story until I knew how it all turned out for Betty.
Above all, it's inspiring and touching and discusses spirituality using frank, honest language that makes it all so real and practical and useful in day to day life. If you want to learn more about what God's infinite love looks like when it's manifested in the minutiae of our lives on earth, you should read this book.

Jezebel and Delilah have plenty to teach contemporary Christian women, according to Bad Girls of the Bible and What We Can Learn from Them. In this self-help book, Liz Curtis Higgs tells fictionalized, contemporary stories based on the lives of biblical characters including Eve, Potiphar's Wife, and the Woman at the Well. In verse-by-verse commentary, Higgs summarizes each life's lessons and provides a list of questions for personal consideration or group discussion. The overall message of each chapter is the same: "Good Girls and Bad Girls both need a Savior. The goodness of your present life can't open the doors of heaven for you. The badness of your past life can't keep you out either." In its effort to turn readers' minds heavenward, Bad Girls draws a distinction between fun and joy. Associated with "fleshly pleasures," fun "is temporary at best; it's risky, even dangerous, at worst." Joy, on the other hand, is found in God's "gift of grace." Perhaps the book's greatest weakness is its inability to see that "fun," in many lives, is a holy and necessary means of attaining "joy." --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
Women everywhere marvel at those “good girls” in Scripture–Sarah, Mary, Esther–but on most days, that’s not who they see when they look in the mirror. Most women (if they’re honest) see the selfishness of Sapphira or the deception of Delilah. They catch of glimpse of Jezebel’s take-charge pride or Eve’s disastrous disobedience. Like Bathsheba, Herodias, and the rest, today’s modern woman is surrounded by temptations, exhausted by the demands of daily living, and burdened by her own desires.
So what’s a good girl to do? Learn from their lives, says beloved humor writer Liz Curtis Higgs, and by God’s grace, choose a better path. In Bad Girls of the Bible, Higgs offers a unique and clear-sighted approach to understanding those “other women” in Scripture, combining a contemporary retelling of their stories with a solid, verse-by-verse study of their mistakes and what lessons women today can learn from them.
Whether they were “Bad to the Bone,” “Bad for a Season, but Not Forever” or only “Bad for a Moment,” these infamous sisters show women how not to handle the challenges of life. With her trademark humor and encouragement, Liz Curtis Higgs teaches us how to avoid their tragic mistakes and joyfully embrace grace.

Intriging Title.......2007-06-27
Used this in an adult Sunday School class. More attendees than normal. Very well presented and received by the class. Thank you Liz!!!
The world never changes.......2007-05-27
We are studying this in Sunday School. The input from the book and all the other ladies is amazing. This is a great book for boosting our self esteem and learning to depend on GOD more.
Female Chauvinist .......2007-03-10
Our church book study group mistakenly purchased this Bad Girls of the Bible instead of the one by the other author.
While I had great difficulty getting through the first chapter, I am now using this book to improve my understanding of the Bible, and to learn more about ancient times.
This writer makes-up her own story lines, and conveniently leaves out portions of chapters and verses that do not fit her story line. For example, in chapter two, she states that Egypt where Joseph is held as a slave by Potiphar, is a dry hot land. Perhaps she should read just a little earlier in the Bible. In Genesis 13:10, we are told different.
10 Lot looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, toward Zoar.
While the ordering of this book was a mistake on the part of the person who ordered the books for us, I believe it is a Godsend for us to read and discuss this book, though I doubt we will actually be using the questions at the end of each chapter. Instead we will ask questions regarding her inaccurate portrayal of these women and the facts of history.
Great book for Women's bible study.......2007-02-06
Our women's small group has gotten alot of knowledge and insight from this book! Bad Girls of the Bible helps us discuss some topics that we might not otherwise. The author is wonderful at helping us see the character of these women. It is very well written. I highly recommend this book for a bible study with your girlfriends!
Funny, moving, meaningful.......2007-01-11
Liz Curtis Higgs juxtaposes fiction and nonfiction in the same book. Read the stories of modern "bad girls" while guessing what Bible character they represent. Then read the nonfiction essay on the Biblical "bad girl". Find out how they were bad, why they were bad, and what God did about it. Liz describes herself as a "former bad girl", so she really gets inside the skin of these women. This book is so good that I can't keep it on hand. I've lent out and given away multiple copies to women who never fail to enjoy the book and experience God in a meaningful way. Get one for yourself and one for your daughter/mother/best friend. (I'm a former bad girl myself.) Then go for Really Bad Girls of the Bible and Unveiling Mary Magdalene by the same author.

Backstory" is the screenwriter's term for what happens in a plot before the screen story begins. In this companion volume to McGilligan's widely praised Backstory: Interviews with Screenwriters of Hollywood's Golden Age, fourteen studio scribes active in later decades rail and reminisce about their fifty-plus years of inventing and scripting movies. Richard Brooks, Garson Kanin and Ruth Gordon, Arthur Laurents, Ben Maddow, Stewart Stern, Daniel Taradash, and Philip Yordan are among the distinguished figures included.
The 1940s were a period of transition for the motion picture industry, from an era of hope and glory and the upheavals of World War II to a postwar era of caution and confusion. The 1950s brought a great decline in the number of films produced and led to the extinction of that peculiar creature, the contract writer.
The survivors of Hollywood's most productive years remain wonderfully talkative, however. In this lively collection of interviews they contribute useful writing tips, radical correctives to screen history and industry folklore, and just plain fascinating gossip. As a whole, the interviews provide a compelling biographical close-up of an entire generation of men and women whose talent, vision, and tenacity were critical to the institution we know as "Hollywood.

Backstory 2, the second volume of interviews with Hollywood's legendary screenwriters, covers those who thrived in the 1940s and '50s. It was a tumultuous period for the film industry, a time often referred to as Hollywood's golden age, even though it was also the era of the blacklist. Scenarists were hit particularly hard by McCarthyism: eight of the famous "Hollywood Ten" were writers. The focus of this rich volume is aptly summarized in the introduction by editor Patrick McGilligan: "There are updates on the studios and the chieftains of the 1940s and '50s; vignettes of directors (like [George] Cukor) who respected the script and others (like [Howard] Hawks) who fiddled with it; glimpses and anecdotes of eminent colleagues, including an assortment of tales about Faulkner, insights into the tricks, traps, and technology of films; philosophy about the illusions and realities of the craft."

This book is a joke!.......2007-09-13
I can't believe I actually paid for this book. According to this clown Jerry Garcia is GOD and Eddie Van Halen is a joke. I'm not making that up. He says Jerry Garcia is GOD. He knocks almost every popular guitar player since 1973. For example, I don't care if you like AC/DC or not, Angus Young's best work was not "Ride On" off Dirty Deeds. Personally I like the song but it is in no way his best effort. Remember that little album Back in Black? He manages to list at least five hundred guitar players that NOBODY has ever heard of. I could go on and on. This book is as bad as it gets. I wish Pete Townsend would beat this guy over the head with a Les Paul Deluxe!
As Lame As They Come.......2005-06-10
This book isn't worth the paper it's printed on. This guy hasn't a clue. If you're going to write about someone, anyone at least know the facts. I looked up 3 guitarists, all of which had bogus information. My feeling is, 3 strikes and your out. Even when it came to Jeff Beck saying the reason he left the Yardbirds was due to a dispute with Jimmy Page, NOT!!! Beck was ousted for being a nutjob, which is what makes him one of the best guitarists ever. My opinion, avaoid this book at all costs, you'll learn nothing but one man's useless opinion which we all know the old adage about opinions. Opinions are like....., everybody's got one.
This could have been a great book !.......1997-10-21
I could not believe that Hugh Gregory failed to include so many great guitar players, for example there is no mention of Scott Henderson or Mike Stern anywhere in the book ! I mean these guys are major players ! And the book states on the cover that studio session players are included, so where the hell is Michael Landau's name ! I was extremely disappointed with the authors exclusion of so many significant major league guitar players ! Don't forget them next time Hugh !

Nuts and Bolts of Branding YOU.......2006-12-06
Peter and Tim have done a fantastic job documenting the nuts and bolts of building your personal brand. Tom Peter's in his ground breaking book Re-Imagine tells us that we need to become our own company and sell ourselves to the corporations and then move on. Peter's tells you the WHY, this book tells you the HOW. They have an excellent section at the end of each chapter that leads you through your own personal brainstorming and gives you tips on mistakes to avoid that can kill you. This book is an easy read and one you will want to keep close to refer to repeatedly as you develop your business.

Kindred Spirit Found in the Power of Branding!.......2006-02-28
What a find! I have been searching for a kindred spirit in the power of branding. And now I have found a kindred spirit in Peter Montoya. Peter not only shares, he promotes the belief that people, not the products and services, produce effective branding! And Peter with Tim Vandehey have written a "world class" primer that I believe is a must read for business owners and professionals who want to realize the power of branding. I strongly recommend the purchase and reading of this book and then putting its advice to work to Brand YOU!

Consistency Is Key.......2005-08-19
The biggest takeaway from Montoya's book is the need for consistency.
The fact is some experts lose track of the need for a steady hand on the wheel, thereby blurring their "brand" (ugh, that word is far too overused and meaningless; but that's a debate for another day). Whether they are authors, trainers, lecturers, or entrepreneurs (or a combination of each), all signs must point to a consistent image that the expert consciously tries to cultivate.
Some of Montoya's techniques are a bit simplistic and oversold. It is important to remember that readers have the ability to take what works for them and discard the rest. If I get one or two "wow" ideas from a book these days, I consider it a worthwhile read. Montoya's emphasis on consistency was a pertinent "wow" reminder.
