Book Description
Completely revised and updated.
He was born the most famous baby in the world, son of the President-elect of the United States. Millions saw him as a little boy who said goodbye to his father with a final salute -- a heartbreaking image that became part of history. Now, three decades later, another generation of Camelot comes to a tragic end.
This fascinating unauthorized biography reveals as no other the inner dynamics of the marriage between John and Jacqueline Kennedy; John, Jr.'s search for a father figure in his uncles Robert and Ted Kennedy and his stepfather Aristotle Onassis. It reveals young John's dreams of becoming an actor, his career in law, and his founding of George magazine. And it intimately details his role of loving son to his late mother, devoted husband to Carolyn Bessette, and as America's Prince Charming to the rest of the world.
With a dazzling array of updated photos, Prince Charming delves below the glossy surface to tell the inspiring, flesh-and-blood true story of a young man born to live a life that was destined to be called a legend.
Customer Reviews:
Generation Xer says: "Good Read".......2002-01-08
As a generation "Xer" this book intrigued me for one shallow purpose at the forthright. John F. Kennedy, Jr. was and will always remain in the public's eye as a sex symbol. I was glad that the author started out with something familiar when introducing her book. Beginning with the how and why of John's appointment to the sexiest man alive was something that I remembered and could identify with. Without any knowledge of the Kennedy "clan" as she terms them, and even less historical knowledge, I could identify with the placement of John on the cover of People magazine. While I had heard of President Kennedy's alleged affairs it came as a shock to see other members of the Kennedy family hold such little esteem for marriage vows. The author really brings Jackie Kennedy down to earth and sure makes me long for her happiness and admire the strength of such a delicate looking woman. She certainly isn't short on male companionship and some of her relationships leave you wondering why she didn't just go it alone. The details behind John's relationships are intriguing and the relationship with Madonna was particularly surprising to this reader. The author paints the picture of John being less than the smartest Kennedy but far outshining with his personality, athletic abilities, and Kennedy charisma. The well-known ending is tragic and left me with the same sinking feeling as I did watching the T.V. hoping his plane would be found or by some chance to find out he hadn't been on board at all. A good read for anyone wanting more information on the Kennedy family and most importantly on John Jr.
Gossip.......2001-04-28
this book is nothing but gossip.this lady prints facts people already know. dont waste your money
Not a good source for Carolyn Bessette information........2000-12-25
This back of the book cover led me to believe there would be interesting information on his wife, Carolyn. Ha! There was practically no information on his wife. I learned more about her in a single magazine article then from this book. It has the basic geographic info: born, lived, schooled. Boring. If you are a diehard JFK JR then go for it, otherwise there are much better books on him. If you are looking for Carolyn info, look elsewhere. Period.
Still mourning the death of an unforgettable man.......2000-08-31
This book had many good points, and I finished it fairly quickly. It made me laugh out loud, and at other poignant moments I cried. I enjoyed reading about John's college exploits, his years as an assistant D.A. and details of his relationships with the ladies. It was vividly written, capturing my imagination in a way that presented me with a good sense of his splendid personality, in turn giving me an evengreater admiration of the man. Too much time, I think was devoted to his early childhood days, and I was disappointed that missing was a major portion of his later life after the debut of GEORGE, and of his married life. I would recommend this book, though, to anyone wanting a keepsake to revisit the memory of our beloved John Jr.
JFK Jr: Life In Review.......2000-03-17
This book does appear to offer a fairly accurate and close look at John Kennedy, Jr. But, it spends too much time discussing the Kennedys and Jackie. It should have focused more attention to the subject itself: John. A huge indiscrepancy is that John Jr. was born on Thanksgiving Day. Any good fact checker could have easily discovered that November 25, 1960 was a Friday, not a Thursday. When an author commits such a mistake, their credibility for accuracy of the rest of material in the book has to be questioned. As another reviewer wrote, any magazine offers a better biography of John Kennedy, Jr. than this book does. The best part of this book, however small, was the photos.

Book Description
In 1987, zoologist Alan Rabinowitz was invited by the Thai government to study leopards, tigers, and other wildlife in the Huai Kha Khaeng valley, one of Southeast Asia's largest and most prized forests. It was hoped his research would help protect the many species that live in that fragile reserve, which was being slowly decimated by poachers, drug traffickers, and even the native tribes of the area. Chasing the Dragon's Tail is the remarkable story of Rabinowitz's life and adventures in the forest as well as the streets of Bangkok, as he works to protect Thailand's threatened wildlife.
Based on Rabinowitz's field journals, the book offers an intimate and moving look at a modern zoologist's life in the field. As he fights floods, fire-ant infestations, elephant stampedes, and a request to marry the daughter of a tribal chief, the difficulties that come with the demanding job of species conservation are dramatically brought to life. First published in 1991, this edition of Chasing the Dragon's Tail includes a new afterword by the author that brings the story up to date, describing the surprising strides Thailand has made recently in conservation.
"Rabinowitz seems to crave risk and adventure, and the story of his hazardous years 'chasing the dragon's tail' in the Thai forest?which includes encounters with angry poachers, a narrow escape from his own leopard trap, and the aftermath of his participation in an opium counci?makes engrossing reading. He also reveals much about Thai life and its contradictions. . . .

"...one of the best recent books on Thailand. Although essentially the record of a zoologist conserving wild cats in the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary, the book also offers a penetrating account of author Alan Rabinowitz's struggle to come to terms with Thailand and the Thai people.

Other titles by Alan Rabinowitz include Beyond the Last Village and Jaguar.

The Struggle To Save Thailand's Biodiversity.......2006-08-21
This book describes the day-to-day life and frustrations of renowned conservationist Alan Rabinowitz in Thailand. While the large mammal biodiversity of the country is amazing, it is being severely depleted. The large mammals are victims of a local culture that seems to think of wildlife as free wealth to be plundered for subsistence or luxury.
While he is primarily a conservationist, Dr. Rabinowitz sometimes assumes the role of animal rights advocate as he describes acts of heartless cruelty by the locals towards animals. Examples: a python which is skinned alive by some of his servants (it is easier to remove the skin when the animal is alive), and a magnificent gaur (the largest wild cattle species in the world) which had died a slow death from starvation after its jaw had been shattered by a bullet.
A distinctive feature of Dr. Rabinowitz's passionate first-person narrative is that he cares for wild animals as individuals apart from his desire to save them as species. His study animals are given Thai names and not numbers. He is emotionally involved with their well-being and does not maintain the cold detachment towards them that one might expect from a scientist. He also does not hesitate to give vent to his anger and anguish when one of the animals he has grown familiar with dies a horrible death at the hands of poachers. His view of the local culture is heavily influenced by how they treat animals and is understandably negative. This has been described as "cultural imperialism" by a reviewer but it is hard not to be moved by the sufferings of animals which are skinned alive and left to die in agony. Readers would have to judge for themselves on this point. In my opinion, Dr. Rabinowitz would have failed in his duty as a conservationist if he did not portray accurately the problems of saving Thailand's biodiversity - and most of the problems undoubtedly stem from the fact that the local culture does not see animals as deserving basic human sympathy, kindness and ethical treatment. "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."
Apart from the above sociological aspects of conservation in Thailand, the book contains a lot of information about the mammals themselves and their ecology. There are detailed descriptions of radiocollaring leopards and other wild cats which are very exciting, as are some of the descriptions of the largest cat of them all, the tiger.
Alan Rabinowitz may be a biologist, but he is certainly a skilled writer. .......2006-01-23
This is the true story of a biologist with a dark past heading to a small Asian country to study leopards. Though the story is about animal conservation, the human interactions are what make the bulk of it. The author is an emotional person, and the conveyance of his feelings and thoughts in his writing make this story very entertaining. He is also very candid about some of the things he did in Thailand.
I have to say one more thing about his writing style. As I was reading the book, I could picture myself hiking along the trails of the forest reserve, or talking to the forest monks. I cringed and felt helpless as I read of the daily cases of skinning and cooking animals alive. And I felt the sense of helplessness and frustration of trying to stop an entire nation from devouring every bit of wildlife left.
With Friends Like Alan, Who Needs Enemies?.......2004-05-01
Self-indulgent prose about a self-involved man's self-pitying and self-important journey halfway around the world to assert himself and his culture on other people. I'm not qualified to comment on his zoological practices, but I don't come away impressed with him. His writing is C level work -- simply wretched. It does have the quality of being revealing, but not necessarily of the point he labors and fails to make. This book is a depressing first-person account of cultural imperialism. No wonder Americans are so universally reviled in other countries...
A captivating story of the state of the tiger in Thailand.......1997-10-01
"Like his first book, Jaguar, Rabinowitz's Chasing The Dragon's Tail is a telling testimony to the difficulties emarked upon in the attempt at large predator conservation. Rabinowitz's books are a must read for anyone interested in habitat preservation and conservation."
Book Description
All eat from the bowl of life -- Tiger Woods just has a bigger spoon.
So writes Curt Sampson in his groundbreaking account of the current state of golf and the man who changed the game forever -- Tiger Woods. With a mix of power, skill, and business savvy, Woods has become the biggest sports figure since Michael Jordan, wielding a competitive edge of equal parts inspiration and intimidation. As for the rest of the golfing world -- including other players, junior golfers and their parents, corporate America, agents, instructors, fans, and the media -- it's either catch up or give up.
As in his controversial bestsellers Hogan and The Masters, Sampson digs deep to tell stories that wouldn't otherwise be told. From the Austin golf course worker whose admiration for Woods leads him to spend every waking minute mimicking him, to the unemployed talk show host whose website stretches the bounds of hero worship, to the other end of the scale, where up-and-coming pro Charles Howell III -- tapped by Nicklaus to be the next great challenge to Woods -- continues to close the gap.
By turns moving, hilarious, and eye-opening, Chasing Tiger is an affectionate yet wary account of one extraordinary man's impact on the world of sports, and the game of golf as it moves into a new era.

"All eat from the bowl of life. Tiger Woods just has a bigger spoon. So writes Curt Sampson in his ground-breaking account of the current state of golf. Tiger Woods has changed golf forever. His mix of power and skill combines with his extraordinary business savvy to make Woods the biggest global sports figure since Michael Jordan. Like Jordan, Woods' competitive signature is equal parts inspiration and intimidation. But what about the other guys? It's either catch up or give up for the rest of the golfing world, and in Chasing Tiger Curt Sampson exuberantly charts the state of the game as the new century unfolds. There are Duval and Mickelson and a host of other stars, of course, but there are also the junior golfers and their parents, corporate America, agents, instructors, fans, and the media. Just as he did in his controversial bestsellers Hogan and The Masters, Sampson digs deep to uncover stories that wouldn't otherwise be told. There's the golf course employee in Austin whose admiration for Woods leads him to spend every waking minute mimicking his hero (including the trademark pumping fist, only here it's on the practice green). There's the awestruck unemployed talk show host who stretches the bounds of good taste and hero worship with his Web site, Tigerwoodsisgod.com. At the other end of the scale is Charles Howell III, skinny as a 2-iron, a up-and-coming player who has been tapped by Jack Nicklaus to be the next great challenge to Woods. Howell is the anti-Tiger: a man unfailingly friendly to fans and media, recently married, opinionated, and entirely lacking in caution, yet he struggles to earn enough money to make the Tour. Curt Sampson has written an affectionate yet wary account of one extraordinary man's impact on the world of sport. By turns moving, hilarious, and eye-opening, Chasing Tiger is a wonderful addition to the golf canon. "

Tiger as a Seismic Event.......2002-08-04
Beyond the aggrandizing sports articles and simplistic examinations of Tiger's stroke or sheer ability lies the story of his effect on the PGA.
Woods has changed golf the same way an eathquake can change a small, extraordinarily inclusive, community.
The landscape is different. Familar direction markers no longer exist and are replaced by new totems of accomplishment and mountains of greatness.
Instead of toeing the party line of Tiger's perfection Sampson examines Tiger's effect on the PGA community.
Anyone curious about the innerworkings of the PGA, with all its glory, success, and abject drudgery, should READ THIS BOOK.
Anyone interested in Tiger Woods and his permanent effect on golf SHOULD READ THIS BOOK.
This book tells you what he has done to the game and how the playing field has changed for every single player who picks up a club.

Wait for the paperback -- if at all........2002-07-26
I have enjoyed Sampson's writing in the past, but this book disappointed. As advertised, it really is a book about the chasing of Tiger Woods -- by competitors, fans and media. One can enjoy the "behind the scenes" looks at the tour, and if you are interested in Charles Howell III, you will get a bunch of info here. I felt the book headed off in too many directions, the metaphors were WAY overblown, and the lack of focus was frustrating. If you are interested in the peripheral insights to be gained, or simply love Sampson -- wait for the paperback!
A Great Read!.......2002-07-09
I read this book straight through! "Chasing Tiger" is not yet another Tiger Woods biography, but an inside look at Tiger Woods through the eyes of other professional golfers, groupies, media people, caddies, etc..Curt Samspon tells a truthful, and sometimes shocking, account of what it's like to be on the tour with Tiger. This is a great book, not just for golf fans, but for anyone who is interested in more than what they read on the sports page. Curt Sampson has great style, and you should read this book.
Chasing Tiger by Curt Sampson.......2002-07-05
A very enjoyable read....as usual, I hated for Curt Sampson's book to be over!

A general overview of recent changes in Vietnam........1998-03-21
This book is Hiebert's contribution to the "Is Vietnam the next Asian dragon?" discussion; contents are based on his experiences in Vietnam from 1990-94 as a Far Eastern Econoimc Review bureau chief. While covering a lot of issues, and using interview material to add personal drama, the book does not delve very deeply into any of the economic and political problems plaguing Vietnam. Hiebert instead prefers a rather upbeat spin on the situation, forecasting that although many difficulties lie ahead for the Vietnamese people, solutions exist and those who have the power to implement them will actually do so. The theme of "rapid change in Vietnam" without in-depth analysis of where current trends might lead also makes the material in the book somewhat outdated already. I would recommend this book to anyone with a general interest in Vietnam--it is easy and enjoyable to read--but it is too general to be useful to those familiar with post-1975 Vietnam.

A GREAT COLLECTION.......2003-05-22
Da Capo Press present a collection of sports stories chronicling the career of the phenomenal "Tiger" Woods. As a player, icon and astute businessman, Tiger has captured the hearts and minds of sports writers. As much as they have written about this great champion of the links, the more he suprises them with new records. They are chasing Tiger but he is not so easily to be captured and defined in words. Thus this collection gives us an over-view of those writers fascination with their young prey as he launches his career.
Jaime Diaz's profile of Tiger in 1991 kicks off the beginning of this collection. It is significantin that it set the pattern for Tiger becoming more than just a name in the crowd who happened to be a good golfer. Diaz warns Nicklaus to watch out for a new young man is in town (Tiger was fifteen)who will surpass him.
A decade later, Michael Wilborn from the Washington Post bemoans the fact that being great isn't good enough in golf anymore. Why? The answer is simple, Tiger Woods. The young man has changed the stakes of the game to the point where being great isn't enough to win. Even in his "slump" periods, Tiger is still at his peak. He has raised the stakes and game to a much higher level that forces his opponents to play better.
The rest of the articles touch on issues about his deal with Nike, his refusal to be baited into "race" issues, his golf career at Stanford and his becoming a cultural icon. All of these articles are informative and enlightening as you see Tiger develop over the years. Truly this young man has changed the face of golf in many ways. Chasing Tiger:The Tiger Woods Reader is an essential book to have in seeing how the sports world has kept its eye on one of golf's greatest champions.

Amazon.com
Denzel Washington is certainly one of the finest actors working today, having earned an Academy Award nomination as Stephen Biko in Cry Freedom and a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the Civil War action/drama Glory. But perhaps his greatest contribution to American cinema is something he has done better than any other African American actor before him--transcend racial lines. As Douglas Brode, author of Denzel Washington: His Films and Career states, "Denzel has always insisted, in his personal life, that he wants to be treated in a color-blind manner, while professionally he has always been on the lookout for just such film roles."
The best moments here are the revelations regarding Washington's film choices, including how he turned down a role in Oliver Stone's Platoon because, he said, he didn't just want to play "one of the black characters" who either "cleaned toilets" or "left before the fighting started." Instead, he pitched himself to Stone as one of the lead characters, the part eventually portrayed by Willem Dafoe. He has since gotten his chance at starring roles many times over, often with impressive results. This biography and film history chronicles Washington's film career admirably up through the 1996 drama Courage Under Fire, complete with 24 pages of photographs. --Walt Opie

Denzel Washington: His Films and . . . His Films??!.......1998-09-03
If you are looking for a definitive, "traditional" biography of Denzel Washington, this book is definately not it. Author Douglas Brode (who, it should be noted, is a well-respected writer of film and television personas) offers the reader a biographical filmography of sorts, which appeals more to film wonks and students of cinema than it does to the average Denzel fan. Strictly speaking, Brode just doesn't reveal exactly who Denzel Washington is off-screen; indeed, the first chapter, "Deconstructing Denzel," is as close as the reader gets to finding out about Denzel's past (included are brief mentionings of his youth, his pre-acting days and his time at Fordham University, where he got his first taste of "serious" acting). The rest of the book takes the film-by-film approach to Washington's career, squeezing Denzel's personal life into the extra spaces of the context in which each film is discussed. This approach becomes problematic -- and frustrating -- as the reader never really is able to fully recontstruct Denzel after the book's intro, a fact that further enhances the charismatic performer's notoriously [and ironically] enigmatic and aloof off-screen persona (anyone who's read or seen an interview of Washington knows exactly what I mean). The book, however, shines in its extensive analysis of Washington's films from a critical standpoint and enables the reader to be privy to "behind-the-scenes" information on all of his films, from the forgettable "Carbon Copy" (1981) to "Courage Under Fire" (1996), while adding an impressive technical insight not found in many mainstream bios of "celebrities." That said, it is regrettable that there is little mention of Denzel's non-cinematic successes and failures; I would have liked to have read more on his "St. Elsewhere" days as well as his early struggles as an actor on the New York theater scene. I also would have enjoyed more information on his family, particularly his wife, Pauletta, an accomplished artist (pianist, actress, songstress) in her own right. Make no mistake: despite its numerous flaws, the book is a valuable resource for Denzel fans and is especially good as a reference to supplement one's viewing experience after watching any one of Washington's powerful performances (excluding the one in the aforementioned "Carbon Copy") that prove why he remains such a widely admired [and coveted] "A-list"-actor.

The best book for part-time/full-time gambler!.......2004-07-03
Hey, I've read so many books over gambling, for now I can't remember how many. Unless I read that one, I always thought they were the same with different autors.
That book changed my opinion. I have been a gambler for 15 years now and I found so many new tips, I could'nt believe my eyes.
This is not a how-to-play-casino-games book. It's a book teaching you the most important: how to play as a winner and always leave "as a winner". Take the money and run is a modern principe in casino's books. That one goes further.
It made me change, I hope, forever, my thoughts about what is really a fun and winning way to go to casino.
For the price of a Mcdo trio, don't let all these good advices run away from you.

The best and most linking the market book!.......2007-09-11
Mr.Kotler has used more simply words to desribe and answer and summer market questions which has nobody to do it before him!
I really like his books!
Therefore, I have purchased his another book "Marketing insights from A to Z in china. Before I would like to purchase it from Amazon, but shipping fee too expensive. Finally I found this book /english version in Shanghai's booking exhibition in Aug. 2007.
I wish you can recommemd more latest Kotler book to me in the future!
I thought he is greatest master in this filed at the moment.
Marketing is not the same with Kotler.......2006-04-12
Philip Kotler is an institution by himself and perhaps the father of modern marketing. I have read most of his books and was pleasantly surprised to read about the growing importance of PR in his book. For a marketing expert to admit this requires guts. Kotler has written about buzz marketing in a way that is new and innovative. Good book to understand modern marketing methodology and practices.
Not what i expected.......2005-08-23
Having been immensely impressed with the material provided in Principles of Marketing, i found this book somewhat disappointing. Kotler touches upon the same stuff. It looks more like a collection of information from his other books, than a fresh approach to answering nagging questions.
Sit at the feet of the guru.......2005-04-26
If you're in marketing, you probably know the name "Philip Kotler." He's recognized as the world's foremost authority on marketing. Lots of awards, recognition, books, etc. Well respected. If you're not in marketing, he's still the world's foremost, etc, etc. And from his perspective, we are all in marketing. So, this book is for everyone in business...and then some.
You'll find this little paperback disarmingly short...in appearance. First impression is that the book is too short to have much to offer. Surprise! There's an amazing amount of knowledge and insight in these pages. The format makes the book easy to read-in one sitting or in chunks or even sporadically as a reference book.
The format is somewhat unusual, which gives a sense of special-ness to the book. Think of a question you'd like to ask a man like this, if you could have him all to yourself for a few minutes. OK, good. Now, ask another one. And another one. That's what your experience will be with this book. Question after question-that people have asked the guru over the years, followed by his short answer. Not long treatises, just short answers like you might get in an elevator encounter.
The questions are organized into major categories and subcategories. The major sections are Markets and Marketing, Marketing Strategy, Marketing Tools, Market Planning, Marketing Organization, Marketing Areas of Application, and Marketing Excellence. The table of contents consists of the questions and the page numbers. Just let your finger move down the page and you'll find questions that draw you in because you're curious about his answer.
Bonus: this book has a comprehensive index that makes it easy to find the answers-and the questions-you're looking for. Hence the value as a reference book.
Drawbacks include the plight that the answers will often be shorter and shallower than readers will want. So, read his other books for the depth. There is some redundancy, as might be expected as the topics intertwine. All in all, this is a valuable book, perhaps worth multiples of the price to have a resource for quick, concise, sometimes provocative answers.
