Book Description
Nobody ever threw a baseball better than Sandy Koufax. He dominated the game -- and the ball, making it rise, break, sing. Then, after his best season, in 1966, he was gone, retired at age thirty, leaving behind a reputation as the game's greatest lefty and most misunderstood man. The Brooklyn boy whom the Dodgers signed as "the Great Jewish Hope" will forever be known for his refusal to pitch the opening game of the 1965 World Series because it fell on Yom Kippur. Forty years later, Koufax stands apart and alone, a legend who declines his own celebrity. In Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy, Jane Leavy dispels the mystery to discover a man more than worthy of the myth.

Readable & Revealing.......2007-04-30
This admirable biography mixes a little baseball history with its revealing insight into one of the game's greatest pitchers. Readers learn much about Sandy Koufax, from his Brooklyn childhood, to his college basketball days, to his modest-then-stellar career with the Brooklyn/LA Dodgers from 1955-1966. As these pages show, Koufax was highly intelligent player who marched to his own drum. He also emerged from several years as a struggling southpaw into the game's most dominant hurler. During the five seasons (1962-1966) that he dominated baseball Koufax sported a phenomenal 111-34 won-loss record and 1.95 ERA - far eclipsing the game's other top hurlers. Sadly, painful arthritis in his pitching arm led him to retire (at age 30) after the 1966 season, when his superb record (27-9, 1.73 ERA) helped lead his team to another pennant. As a Jewish player, Koufax endured occasional Anti-Semitic taunts, and he made headlines by electing not to pitch the opening game of the 1965 World Series due to a major Jewish holiday. Still, many teammates thought him quite cool, and Pirates slugger Willie Stargell said that hitting against Koufax was like trying to drink coffee with a fork.
Author Jane Levy interviewed hundreds of teammates, friends, etc., in writing this book, although Koufax himself declined to participate. His absence leads to a slight feeling of incompleteness, but this remains a very interesting and revealing effort.
It's about the great stories.......2007-04-05
I'll agree with the author that Sandy was a terrific pitcher and an introvert in a sport where it seems like all the really big stars were all capitalizing on their fame. But the really great thing about the book were all the personal stories...between catcher and pitcher, Drysdale and Koufax, kids and coaches who grew up with Sandy, opposing players and managers who played against the Dodgers, etc.
Certainly there was some myth-making going on...by the author as well as many of the teammates who played with Sandy. I think that's what happens when you meet up with an extraordinary talent who enjoys his privacy on his terms.
Loved the little quotes by Ernie Banks and the one story when Mickey Mantle faced him in the world series. Baseball isn't just a fun game to play...it's the stories that are fun as well and this book tells them very well. You'll enjoy it.
A Story that Surpasses the Title! .......2007-01-19
I really do not know much about the history, stats, or events of baseball. This book was so much more than that. It makes you wish you had either known or met Mr. Koufax. This is a story that both men & women from all walks of life would love. It was a reminder that truly complex, compassionate,non-conforming men are out there. Who are not so much impressed by WHAT they do, but more about HOW they do it. Today's athlete would never make the choices and sacrifices that Mr. Koufax did. Sadly, those days are long gone.
A Dodger Fan's Must Read.......2006-10-31
Growing up a huge LA Dodger fan, I eagerly consumed each page of this book. I received A Lefty's Legacy a few years ago, read a few chapters and put the book down as Jane was a little too down in the details about Sandy's adolescence. How he dealt with his step-father, sandlot ball and his aspirations of playing basketball provided some insight into Sandy's character, but the content was rather dry and dull.
I did find the 9 "innings" of the perfect game, interlaced in between chapters of the book (and Koufax's life) curious and interesting. But honestly, as a perfect game starts out, there is a lack of excitement...even as described within this book.
There has been criticism over Jane's inclusion of Sandy's decision to observe Yom Kippur (instead of pitching game 1 of the '65 Series) and the details surrounding Sandy's Jewish heritage. I found that chapter very telling in who Koufax was then and is now, breaking down the misconceptions of his perceived reclusive life.
For a Koufax or Dodger fan, this book is a must.
Koufax Biscuit?.......2006-10-18
Jane Leavy has attempted to turn Koufax's baseball life into a Seabiscuit-like book, but the effort doesn't quite pan out. Using Koufax's perfect game from 1965 as the central part of the book, she goes back and forth between that one game and the other parts of Koufax's life. There are few details about Koufax's early years with the club, and short thrift is given to the most of his baseball achievements. Surely, she could have found some articles to quote from that were written at the time he evolved into the pitcher he became famous for being, but instead, Leavy relies too much on interviews with men whose memories of the good old days aren't crystal clear.
Parts of this book were hard to read through, but coming in at under 300 pages helped make the book's problems surmountable. If you skip the ten pages that speculate on where Sandy actually spent his day when he refused to pitch on Yom Kippur, the book will be an even faster read.

Sandy Koufax.......2007-03-14
A biography suitable for chapter book readers, this look at the famous baseball pitcher's life focuses almost entirely on his professional baseball career from the late `50s to the mid-60s. Koufax came to sports from a Brooklyn Jewish home. His grandfather Max influenced his upbringing and instilled Jewish values and religion. Koufax came to the major leagues from success in several sports. His college career highlighted the blazing speed of his pitches, but shaky control. Once signed to the major leagues, the rules at the time forced the Brooklyn Dodgers, to keep him on the major league roster before he was ready for it. The result was several frustrating, inconsistent, and far from successful years in Brooklyn. After Koufax established his control, he became perhaps the premiere pitcher of his time. He maintained that status for a relatively few years before injuries forced his premature retirement after his team moved to Los Angeles. At the beginning of one of his team's World Series appearances, Koufax' refusal to pitch on Yom Kippur brought his commitment to his faith into the public eye. The facts are presented clearly, accurately, and chronologically and with notes that help baseball novices understand its terminology. The information appears to be only public record and conjecture about the feelings of this quiet, non-public man's life. Frequent boxed sidebars bring helpful details and tidbits to the story.
For ages 8-12.

Not a great book.......2006-08-25
Although there are parts of all of Sandy's life in the book, it seemed to revolve too much around the 1965 World Series. I'm still waiting for a good biography on Sandy.
Koufax Acquaintance From N.Y........2003-07-03
"Koufax", as written by Ed Gruver, is a highly focused book that covers the life and times of this most private man with flair and tact.
The strength of this book is the combination of the author's narrative with the insightful quotes from interviews he conducted with Sandy's friends and former teammates.
Gruver covers Koufax's life and career through the spectrum of one game - Game 7 of the 1965 World Series. It's an interesting approach, and it works here since this game is regarded as the defining game in Koufax's great career. (Interesting that Jane Levy's book, published one year later, uses the same format, though with a different game).
"Koufax" is a wide-ranging story of the life and career of the man many consider the greatest left-handed pitcher in history. It's filled with interesting anecdotes and brings to life a highly private individual.
Overall, I found it an accurate portrayal of one of sports' most enigmatic figures.
As boring as football fans claim baseball is!.......2003-06-09
Sandy Koufax is frequently described as a shy, introverted, and very private man. Perhaps because of this truth, it's hard to really get to know the real man... and even a biographer has trouble shedding any light on Sandy.
Gruver's book doesn't offer any new insight into Sandy's personality or private life. And the book frequently repeats several phrases over and over again! His pitching motion is described at least five times using the same description, and everyone interviewed for the book chimes in with the same description of his private side. Very repetitive! Lacking any real depth or anything new to say about Sandy Koufax, I guess the author decided to pad the book with repeated phrases. Sandy threw a great curve because of his "long fingers and overhead delivery." Sandy's lack of a good curve in the World Series forced him to "rely almost entirely on his fastfall." I can't tell you how many times I read this same information within the space of this short book.
Taking up the rest of the book is a pitch-by-pitch retelling of Game 7 of the 1965 World Series. Koufax was amazing to see pitch, and his dominance over other players was exciting to watch. But retold by Gruver in minute detail doesn't recreate the drama, it only puts us to sleep. Football fans have long said that "baseball is boring," and Gruver helps prove them right.
The author attempts to frame Koufax's story on the aforementioned 1965 World Series game 7, and jumps forward and backward between that game and the rest of Koufax's life and career. It's a literary device that doesn't work; I found myself confused about what year it was and what important game was being played. Also, Gruver's segue phrases between the 1965 World Series and moments earlier in Koufax's career are forced... moving from the eighth inning of Game 7 to an earlier Koufax pitching start, Gruver might say, "It was just like that time in San Francisco in 1962," and - BOOM - now he's recounting the details of a game played three years earlier. And then back to the 1965 World Series for the bottom of the eighth. And so on.
Hopefully, that newer Koufax biography ("Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy") is better and more exciting than this one. I don't think I've ever read a more boring baseball book, and certainly never one as monotonous as this one.
Doesn't do justice to the man.......2003-05-20
Koufax was the greatest, he deserves a better book. I suspect that some of the more positive reviews posted are more a reflection of the reviewers' feelings about Koufax, rather than the book. This book is poorly written and incredibly boring. How any writer could make the subject of Sandy's brilliant career boring is beyond me. But Gruver finds a way. The writing is dry and disorganized, there is little flow to the material, too many meaningless quotes from others are included without sufficent editing, and a plethora of unimportant details not only overwhelm the narative but are frequently repeated, sometimes three or four times. I've just ordered Jane Leavy's book, it's got to be better.
Koufax, Martinez, Walter Johnson.......2002-05-22
Sandy Koufax, Pedro Martinez, and Walter Johnson are the three greatest pitchers in history. This book makes a strong case for Koufax as THE greatest. Certainly others -- Cy Young,Christy Mathewson,Lefty Grove, Bob Feller,Warren Spahn,Tom Seaver, and today's Maddux and Clemens, among others -- have had greater lifetime careers than Sandy, but has anyone been as good as he at their peak years? Maybe Martinez, maybe the two Johnsons,Walter and Randy. It's probably a flat-out dead heat. However, Koufax finished most of his games, something even the great Pedro and Randy seldom do. Also, Koufax frequently went extra innings -- 11,12,13 innings, something Pedro and Randy NEVER do.Koufax pitched for one of the weakest hitting championship teams of all time. From the time he matured into greatness, he became the sole deciding factor as to whether the Dodgers won the pennant or not;in 1962, with the Dodgers on top, Koufax goes out with a circulatory ailment sometime around midsummer and misses most of the rest of the season and the Dodgers lose the pennant. In '63, with a healthy Koufax all year, they win it.In '64, he goes out again in mid-summer with an arthritic arm, and again the Dodgers lose the pennant. In '65, a healthy Koufax leads them to another pennant. In '66, once again with a healthy Koufax, the Dodgers win the pennant. Do you start to see a pattern here? If the greatest measure of an athlete is how he helps his team win, then surely Koufax has to be at the top of anyone's list. If he'd been able to continue pitching, like Nolan Ryan he'd no doubt have been able to pitch at a master level til he was past 40 due to his work ethic and commitment to conditioning. With that scenario, how many games might he have won? How many pennants for the Dodgers? How many no-hitters? Let's see, at a conservatve estimate of 24 wins a year for 10 more years, that would give him 405 lifetime wins, more than anyone except Walter Johnson and Cy Young, both DEAD BALL pitchers. He pitched 4 no-hitters in his last 5 years. At that rate, he'd have pitched 8 more over the next ten years, for a total of 12, obliterating Ryan's mark of 7. He was the greatest clutch pitcher of all time. His World Series lifetime E.R.A. of 0.95 is the best ever for starting pitchers, eclipsing even the Dead Ball guys! When he retired, he was unbelievably still getting BETTER! He had just reached his all-time personal high in wins(27) and his personal best E.R.A.(1.73). In the last 26 days of his career, he started seven times, threw five complete-game wins, and had an E.R.A. of 1.07! Bill James's all-time favorite pitcher,Lefty Grove, can't match up with Koufax, Martinez, or either of the Johnsons; sorry, Bill. The all-time dream game: Koufax vs. Martinez in the seventh game of the Series. Result? The Dodgers in 13 innings,1-0.
More even than all this, Sandy Koufax is one of the most modest, unassuming athletes ever, a true gentleman. It's a shame today's kids don't have such role models.

Quotes about how to play baseball and how concentration and thought are key.......2007-09-23
This book of quotations is not in the genre of Yogi'isms or Stengelese, sayings that have a sense of factual silliness about them. These quotes are about the game, how to play it and what it takes to be able to play it at the highest level. Most of the quotes are from players who were stars, yet some were from players that never accomplished a great deal. Some examples are:
Luck is the residue of design - Branch Rickey
Show me a guy who's afraid to look bad, and I'll show you a guy you can beat every time - Lou Brock
Make your practices like game. Make your games like practices - John Herbold
Of all the major sports, baseball is the most cerebral; it is a game of inches and anticipation, where preparation and molding a situation to your advantage is the difference between pennants and last place. In this book, you can see how success is made, practice, practice and practice. Even the stars talk about thousands of practice swings, thousands of times they practiced moving the ball from their glove to their throwing hand. There is also anticipation and knowledge of the situation, so that when a play begins, you know exactly what you will do whatever happens. It is also about studying the opposition, pitchers remember the exact pitch that a certain player hit well years earlier. What a great game it is!

Good Book, for wahts there.......2006-12-28
Certainly worth reading.
My only knock on the entire series is its a bit pricey, buying booklets, piece by peice, when several booklets could be included in one book.
At least combine the Technique booklet with the Test booklet.

Some Good Exercises.......2007-05-13
For anyone planning to give a presentation on leadership or develop a class on leadership, this book has quite a few helpful exercises. On the flip side, some exercises are better classified as ice breakers and meeting openers than true leadership exercises.
Great resource for future leaders!.......2006-03-31
I have been working as an intern in the recreation field for the last six months and have felt so frustrated with the relationship(s) between mentor and "protégé" in my profession. My frustrations lead to an interest in researching leadership education and mentor training, and eventually to finding this book.
Like the authors, I am also a firm believer that leadership can be taught, and more importantly that it needs to become a vital part of college and work training curriculum. After reading this book I felt liberated and energized, ready to lead others and to help others lead more responsibly and effectively.
I have recommended this book to many of my colleagues and friends, as a great resource for in-service trainings, staff meetings, and personal growth as a leader. I might also add that with some skepticism that I would ever receive a response, I e-mailed the authors to ask for their feedback and suggestions on my thesis topic. To my surprise they did in fact return my e-mail, and provided me with a lot of great information and references to help me on my journey. For their kind words, encouragement, and for this wonderful book I am very grateful!
Cudos to Lois Hart and Charlotte Wasiman!!!!!.......2005-12-05
I have known Lois Hart for over 20 years, and have enjoyed many of her books. The Leadership Training Activity Book--50 Exercises for Building Effective Leaders, is one of my favorites! It has practical exercises that are relevant to Leadership issues in the 21st Century. The activities are excellent and include detailed instructions--a Trainer's dream! Each activity can be utilized in a variety of ways, depending on time, participants, issues and culture. The Forward, by Jim Kouzes, co-author of The Leadership Challenge, is impressive and indicates his support of this body of work. I found the Organizational Leadership Assessment very useful when putting together a needs assessment for my new client groups.
Cudos to Lois Hart, Ed.D., and Charlotte S. Waisman, Ph.D. for putting together a great collection of useful, pertinent, and profound exercises to support our leaders in their development.
You will not be disappointed with Hart's latest book!.......2005-09-09
I have been an educator and adult trainer for 30 years. I have a full library of activities books by Lois Hart. When building new classes (sometimes on the same topic, but with a different purpose) I continue to count on her manuals of activities as my most valuable reference materials. I highly recommend the Leadership Training Activity Book to trainers and educators who are responsible for curriculum development
According to all accelerated learning theory, adults learn best when actively involved in the topic. Therefore learning activities are very important when providing people experiential learning. Learning activities built around the subject matter helps them "get it" so that the concept "sticks" in their minds. I have been delighted with the materials I found in her books on developingl eaders and many others written by this author, Lois B. Hart.
It is difficult to create a totally new workshop to teach concepts and principles such as Leadership, Team building, and Management skills. I am grateful to find resources that have well thought-out learning exercises. I have been very happy to apply ideas and training techniques to help explain concepts from Hart's books.
As I've found with all her books, this newest book not only saves time developing the course, but provided fun, entertaining and interesting ways to make a point, explain how a method works, or give a true-to-life example. My supervisor, manager, and leader audiences have given very complimentary evaluations on classes I have developed around her activities.
I also recommend you buy her 50 Activities to Develop Leaders Vol I. Faultless Facilitation, Training Methods That Work, and Learning from Conflict. These save me many hours of preparation time because they have easy to follow instructions. The directions explain the objectives, provide a list of supplies required and tell me how much time the activity will take.
Furthermore, these books have provided inspiration. Sometimes I have adapted the ideas in the books and altered them. I have used them when training all types of groups with a variety of different levels of experience and knowledge. You won't be disappointed.
It is comforting to know that programs presented in these reference manuals are based on research and created by a knowledgeable professional who is an expert in the topic. The activities have been tested and carefully constructed so that even an inexperienced trainer can follow the directions to a successful guided activity.
Buy this book! You won't be disappointed........2005-08-03
I've used many of Lois Hart's books in my 25 years of training and consulting so was very interested in seeing her newest contribution, The Leadership Training Activity Book, written with Charlotte Waisman. As one who is certified in Accelerated Learning and bases workshops on participative learning, I found this book priceless. It begins with exercises that set the tone for a workshop and includes many valuable activities including three different leadership assessments. Its exercises include such areas as conflict resolution, negotiation skills, diversity, team building, presentation skills, meeting management as well as applications to help the leader develop his/her coaching and teaching skills. Each activity has clearly been road-tested and is presented with thorough, step-by-step instructions. How wonderful that someone of Lois' caliber has taken the time to put together such a helpful resource for those of us in the field. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
