George Soros was once described as "the only private citizen [of the U.S.] who has his own foreign policy." In this penetrating biography, Michael Kaufman explores the multifaceted life of a man who instead describes himself as "a financial, philanthropic, and philosophical speculator."
Like Intel chairman Andrew Grove, whose memoir Swimming Across touches on some of the same territory, Soros grew up as the scion of a Hungarian Jewish family, many of whose members did not survive the Holocaust. Inclined toward philosophy (a field in which he sometimes writes even today, though many philosophers wish he would not), Soros escaped to England, and later America, and put his sharp mind to work making a huge fortune. Not content to live a leisurely or unexamined life, Soros put more than $1 billion to use in bettering the lives of citizens of formerly totalitarian regimes--and even in hastening the end of dictatorships around the world.
Former New York Times columnist Kaufman delivers a respectful account, closeted skeletons and all, of Soros's life and work, and his book will interest a wide range of readers. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
A penniless émigré who made a fortune and became one of the great philanthropists of the twentieth century, George Soros has led a remarkable life. This biography brings forth his story in unprecedented depth, from his childhood as a Jew in occupied Budapest during World War II to his conquests on Wall Street and the establishment of his philanthropic Open Society foundations.
Soros offers exclusive glimpses at an often misunderstood man, revealing a shy character whose own struggle to escape the Nazis left him with the adamant belief that people of the world are entitled to live without the fear of oppression.
Enigmatic, contradictory, and inspiring, George Soros is one of the most intriguing and globally influential men of our time. In this accomplished biography, written with Soros’s cooperation, Michael T. Kaufman fully illuminates the man, his motivations, and his legacy.
Customer Reviews:
If you want to understand Soros read this book!.......2007-10-02
If you have read any of Chernow's biographies, such as JP Morgan or Rockefeller, and love history, then read this book. This is not a book to learn how Soros invests.
This is not a book that will teach you about fixed income, equities, derivatives, or how to hedge. If you want to sell short...go to the finance section of Amazon and buy a finance book.
This is a brilliant biography about George Soros. You learn about his life, how he grew up, where he went to school. How his character was formed...the events that helped form his work ethic, his philosophy about world markets and peak into how he may think.
You aren't going to get under the hood of his brain, but you will get to the core of what matters to this famous man and why. Brilliantly done!
Soros the "marauding" billionaire.......2006-04-13
This should be the real title. How many people does George have to screw over before the world wakes up and realizes that this guy is just one big rat!
Slow Moving.......2005-08-08
Soros is an enigma, and you'd expect to know more about this man when you bought this book. Indeed, you would, this book gives you a clear history of this man, from his childhood to his vision to his philantrophic reasons.
However, if you buy a book on Soros, you'd probably want to know a lot about what made Soros famous in the first day: The Black Wednesday, in which Soros gambled on the depreciation of British Poundsterling against the Bank of England and won US$1 billion, making his known as "The Man Who Broke the Bank of England."
Unfortunately, there is only a short chapter on this, even though I would bet people would be more curious on this than Soros's childhood days.
The author also speculated that the Queen of England profitted from the loss of the Bank of England, but it sounds more like a rumor because he could not confirm if there was some truth in it.
Anyway, this book is still good if you want to know abot Soros, but moves very slowly.
broad overview, but mostly a puff biography.......2005-04-01
If you want a quick and easy broad overview of Soros then this is your book, but I would recommend Soros on Soros as being more useful at understanding the man.
Also if you're a trader, don't even waste your time on this book. Get Alchemy of finance. This book is a fairly quick read but as you can imagine with a man like Soros, any authorised book is going to be mostly flattery.
But it has it's amusing moments and some good pictures. I wouldn't pay more than $5 though for it. Then you can chuck it like a magazine when you're done.
Textured, with many intriguing details.......2004-09-22
A textured, intriguing, well-written bio of George Soros that contains many new and interesting details. The book is flattering toward its subject without being sychophantic, as is the flaw of some other bios of this ilk.
It does, however, lack sufficient detail about his investing techniques, for which I have deducted one star. This book is about a person who is fascinating as a man as well as an investor, so the absence of sufficient details on his investing techniques, while regrettable, is understandable in a sense.

Not only is gap-toothed Mick Foley a heavy character in the World Wrestling Federation, he is the undisputed literary champion of the wrestling bestseller. It's amazing that there is such a thing as a "wrestling bestseller," and that fact owes largely to the No. 1 bestselling success of Foley's first book, Have a Nice Day! Now he's back with another memoir, Foley Is Good: And the Real World Is Faker Than Wrestling, and fans will not be disappointed by the jokes, the jibes at fellow WWF arm-twisters, and the genial charm of the literary behemoth of our time.
Book Description
In Foley Is Good, Mick Foley -- former Commissioner of the World Wrestling Federation, aka Cactus Jack, Dude Love, and Mankind -- picks up right where his smash #1 New York Times bestseller Have a Nice Day! left off, giving readers an inside look at the behind-the-scenes action in the Federation. With total honesty and riotous humor, Mick Foley shines a spotlight into some of the hidden corners of the World Wrestling Federation. From the ongoing controversy surrounding "backyard wrestling" to the real story behind his now-infamous "I Quit" match with The Rock, Foley covers all the bases in this hysterically funny roller-coaster ride of a memoir.
Customer Reviews:
Foley continues his ranting, raving, and charming storytelling.......2007-10-10
With the massive success of "Have a Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks" it seemed unlikely that a wrestler/entertainer would put out another autobiography only a year after the first. Having told all in the last 800 pages or so, what new could he possibly tell us in another 500?
With the pace pro wrestling moves, an assload, and not only that, but with his personal life as well. Much of the book focuses on his fun and spellbinding journey through 1999 in the WWF, with the main subject being his pain from years of hard wrestling. There's also a lot of focus on his Royal Rumble 1999 match with The Rock, and the documentary Beyond the Mat, which featured footage of his wife and children crying as Mick was hit about 9 times more than originally agreed upon by The Rock with a steel chair.
It becomes obvious by at least Wrestlemania XV that Foley is close to retiring, and his in-ring wrestling quality notably deteriorates. He more than makes up for this with great charisma, and truly humorous promos, interviews, and just random things he did in his career then.
Some of the book is simply repeated in the documentary portion of the video/DVD "Hard Knocks and Cheap Pops", but a lot of the book is also dedicated to things outside of wrestling, from Foley's book writing, his interviews with prime time news programs, and the experience of having his interview manipulated to make him look like an uncaring asshole, and defending the WWF against such reports as the Indiana University one which, as Foley discovered after calling the professor heading the research, was grossly exaggerated and mis-represented, with absolutely no fact-checking occurring afterwards. Foley then takes the opportunity to conduct a similar study with watching hours worth of soap operas and sitcoms---and the results are astounding, as going by the standards set by the study, he finds the amount of reported "sex acts" to vastly outnumber those in the WWF, and simulated "drug use" (which included alcohol) to far outnumber those in the WWF.
The latter part of Foley's book is very sharply devoted to defending the WWF against the usual gauntlet of highly intolerant, narrow-minded conservative groups and people who used the WWF as the scapegoat for acts of violence among children, TV violence and sex, and other issues of "morality" and the like.
Brent Bozell is especially harsh on the WWF, and thus Foley is especially harsh on him, exposing him for the cold, harsh, hypocrite he is (if Foley's facts are accurate), to the amount of acts of children killing children blamed on wrestling, when in fact out of the many cases used by the likes of Bozell, virtually none of them could be directly attributed to pro wrestling, and the few that did being largely the result of parental incompetence and anti-social and sociopathic behavior of the children carrying out the crimes.
His first book is definitely better, but this one is not in the same category, as it explores beyond his wrestling career of the past and focuses more on that of 1999-2000, and his career and life outside of wrestling, including humorous tales of his fandom of Britney Spears, and coming out to his friends with this, to discover The Blue Meanie, Edge, Stevie Richards, and others are also Spears fans, as well as finally explaining the legend of the Penis Suplex, and its origin.
Highlight: An audition for a commercial with Jerry Seinfeld in New York which many wrestlers attend, including ECW stars. When asking Taz (Peter Senerchia) if he could guarantee Jerry's safety during the shoot, Taz, acting on their fears of wrestling being real, replies "I can't guarantee nothin'. If Jerry gets in there with me, he's kind of taking his chances."
Good read.......2007-07-20
Foley is a good writer, has a great sense of humour intermingled with some insights into the world of professional wrestling.
Very much not the stereotypical wrestling thug but a man with an opinion and the ability to voice it.
This book is not as good as his first book but it is still an entertaining read. Just wish he hadn't toed the WWE line and said that he hadn't seen anyone use steroids there. Bit fanciful.
Very good book, but not his best..........2007-05-18
Mick Foley's sequel to "Have a Nice Day" is good, but not great. Of the three he has written, it is not the best of the three.
However, it is still a very good book and an entertaining read. The part where his words were spileced to make the point NBC was trying to make about professional wrestling is a great example of media manipulation, and it couldn't have happened to a nicer, more sincere person as Mick Foley.
True fans of the work inside and outside of the ring still need to have this book.
Fun and Wrestling.......2007-04-12
This personal account of Mick Foley's career in the WWE is full of humorous stories and insights into his life. You'll also be entertained by Foley's Top Ten lists.
MICK IS GOOD AND SO IS THIS BOOK.......2007-04-09
MICK FOLEY (MANKIND) TELLS US OF HIS CAREER IN THE WWE AND A BIT ABOUT HIS FAMILY IN THIS MUST READ BOOK. MICK HAS A TON OF PHOTOS TO GO ALONG WITH HIS HUMOROUS AND INTERESTING STORIES. TO ME SOME OF THE GOOD ONES ARE ABOUT HHH, VINCE MCMAHON AND THE ROCK. MIX THIS WITH MICK'S WIT AND HIS GREAT GIFT OF SELF HUMOR MAKE THIS A REALY NICE READ. THE ONLY DOWNSIDE I HAVE A COMMENT ABOUT IS THAT THE BOOK IS A BIT LENGTHY. BUT ALL IN ALL ANOTHER FINE BOOK BY MICK. RECOMMENDED.

Book Description
The search for the origins of language was one of the most pressing philosophical issues of the eighteenth century. It has escaped notice, however, that music figured prominently in that search. This study analyzes reflections on music and music theory as they appear within the logical and narrative structure of texts by, for example, Rousseau, Diderot, Rameau and Condillac, and considers the ways in which music facilitates links between language and meaning, between conceptions of an original society and an ideal social order.

Successful Selling for Introverts helps individuals achieve sales success even though they may not be "born sales-people" or have traditional sales personalities. Contains valuable checklists, selling tips, self-assessments and numerous "introvert alerts" that feature information readers can apply to their selling efforts immediately.
Customer Reviews:
Good content, bad production quality.......2006-02-27
This is a useful, insightful book that will help anyone, of any behavioral style profile, be a more effective salesperson. Be forewarned, if you are like me (or like most of the introverts I know), the poor production quality and numerous typographical errors -- in general, the "I printed this in my basement" look and feel of this book -- may be a frustrating distraction from the content.
If you find the notions of going door-to-door, being in huge crowds, or talking to a lot of strangers daunting, this book will give you valuable ideas about other approaches to selling that will not only be more comfortable, but more effective as well.
Dennis Silverstein/ Corporate Critters Graphics L.L.C........2005-06-10
Mr. Murphy's book has positively impacted my life in so many ways! In addition to gaining new confidence in selling my service as an illustrator, Successful Selling For Introverts has given me renewed confidence and communication skills as a parent and also invigorated my social skills as welll! I highly, highly recommend it!!
For the non-natural salesmen.......2005-01-10
My previous experiences suggested that there are "natural" sales folks and then there are the rest of us. I was always impressed at how easy they made selling look. I don't like to sell and think of myself as a technical development manager and therefore not required to sell anything. After a couple of developments I realized that I am always selling something in one way or another and the sooner we all recognize that fact the better. With this in mind I gave this book a try. It provides a cook book approach to making the rest of us good and maybe great at selling. Just maybe the naturals aren't so natural after all. Th subject matter is complete, presented with lots of real life examples and seems to "sweep the corners" as the best salesman I ever knew use to say. You have to do a complete job to build business and maybe more importantly keep the business you already have and this book will, I am sure, help.
A roadmap to success, a must read........2004-10-21
Mr. Murphy has brought to the masses an excellent roadmap on how to succeed in Sales. Reading this book is like having a "conversation" with the author. It flows quickly and stays on target. It is full of practical advise, useful training aids and amusing anecdotes. This book is a truely valuable tool for ALL of us who have chosen the profession of selling. I have read many books on the subject of sales and self marketing and this offering ranks among the best. The careful reader will see a method of self accountability in the pages of this book, a good thing for those of us who are self employed. Many thanks to Mr. Murphy for his effort and I look forward to the sequel.
Finding your inner salesman.......2004-04-08
The vast majority of "how to sell" books and courses are created by out-going, energetic, "people persons" which teach methods that only work with personalities just like themselves. What about the rest of us? Many people in sales do not fit in this category and are often left to feel that they cannot succeed unless they take on some false personna.
This books says no! If you are the type of person who finds him or herself drained of energy by being with people, rather than energized, or are just more quiet, reflective and thoughtful, then you will learn how to take advantage of your natural personality to succeed in sales, marketing and networking.
It has helped me a lot. It validated some of the methods I had already used, that "sales" courses said wouldn't work. He shows how to warm up cold calls and, most importantly, have confidence that an introvert's way of selling is OK. The introvert still has to work, still has to deal with rejection, and all the rest, but Murphy will teach one ways to take advantage of one's naturally introverted personality and show how it has advangates the the extrovert can't touch.
If I had to teach sales techniques, I would teach from this book, since a large number of any group will be introverts, who will not be able to hear, implement or be successful using extroverted sales technques.
