The handbook for humanitarians, completely revised and updated with 5 new stories
“
Stone Soup for the World is a blueprint for building a better world. Its heroes are legendary people and ordinary folks who, by conviction, imagination, innovation, persistence, frequently hard work, and not infrequently moral or physical courage, have lifted their neighbors and their communities. They challenge each of us to respond in kind.” —Walter Cronkite, from the Introduction
“The inspiring stories featured in this book are wonderful testaments to the ideals of good citizenship. Citizen service reflects one of the most basic convictions of our democracy: that we are all responsible for one another.” —Former president Bill Clinton
“
Stone Soup for the World tells many inspiring stories and reinforces a favorite quote of mine, ‘From now on in America any definition of a successful life must include service to others.’” —Former president George Bush
“My father used to say that one person could make a difference and each of us should try. This book tells the stories of people who have made that difference, and they are an inspiration to us all.” —Caroline Kennedy
“Wonderful . . . Young and old alike will be inspired by the hundreds of ideas for how we can help our children, our schools, our communities, and our country to be the best we can be.” —Retired General Colin Powell, Founding Chairman of America’s Promise—The Alliance for Youth

Stories of Compassion and Volunteerism for a better world.......2000-07-27
Stone Soup for the World is a set of 100 stories about compassion and volunteerism. From the intro by Colin Powell to the story of Ms.Larned's young brother, the whole book was a joy to read. I especially loved the Nelson Mandela and Paul Newman stories. This book has stirred me to be a better person and to help others. I recently walked in honor of my aunt who passed away from cancer and raised money doing it. It felt good just as these stories felt good. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to people from 9 to 99.
x-mas in april, may, june, july.............1998-10-02
service throughout the day, throughout the month, throughout the year....100 stories of giving...the notes at the end of each story to jump into service in your community are a link to giving. .My favorite story was Christmas in April---I must admit I cheered for Frances as she conquered the steps--I read later that she and the writer are enthusiastic pen pals...what inspiration. Thank you to the 100 stone soup writers. You gave me a taste of who inspires you.
....growing nationally.....the call to service!!!.......1998-08-30
......one of the chapters in this book, these stories reflect movements that we should let sweep the nation!!!! Read and be inspired...told simply, the 90+ writers for this book brought these community heroes home....
a collaboration of voices celebrating service.......1998-08-29
such a pleasure to read these stories... such an opportunity for all involved with the project to share their words...you never know, maybe someone was inspired to do something today...by simply reading...as long as Stone Soup for the World is available to America's youth we know we have a bright future ahead... My favorites: The Forgiveness Party, Table for 6 Billion Please, and Peace for Their Grandchildren....and there are 97 more to read and pass on....
Wonderful motivations of the "goodness" in the human spirit........1998-08-26
On occasion one of those books comes along that I can't put down. This collection of short (3 - 5 pages each) true stories are of people about whom, after I have read the story, I consistently say, "Why didn't I know that before reading this?" This book is truly an insight into past and current history through the prism of what stirs the heart and spirit.

Book Description
After calling balls, strikes, and outs for thirty-six baseball seasons and more than 3000 major league games, umpire Ken Kaiser finally called it a career. From the first day he hit a minor league catcher with a pool table to the fateful day baseball called him out on a strike, Kaiser was one of the game's most popular and colorful characters. And in this autobiography-written with the co-author of Ron Luciano's classic bestseller The Umpire Strikes Back - Kaiser brings to life his wild adventures from the pro wrestling arena to the baseball diamond. This is the hysterically true story of four decades of baseball as lived and loved on the playing field, from Ted Williams and Billy Martin to Derek Jeter and Mark McGwire, from one-eyed umpires to space-age technology. And as he did throughout his long and sometimes controversial career, the larger-than-his-chest-protector Kaiser called 'em as he saw 'em.
Customer Reviews:
Dull, boring book by a hypocrite.......2006-01-12
I found this to be a very dull book, very surprising because the subject matter is inherently interesting. Umpires must have all sorts of great stories, right?
Very early in the book, Kaiser portrays himself as a big ignorant lunk, who stumbled into umpiring and finding his calling.
Other reviewers have talked about his whining over being fired, absolutely right. He is also quite a hypocrite, trashing ballplayers and managers left and right, then using autographed baseballs to duck traffic tickets. He brags openly about making the rules, despite what management says. And while he makes a point about positioning, he neglects to point out the arrogance and stubbornness of many umpires were a detriment to the game.
Lousy book.
Great Read!.......2004-06-19
I enjoyed this book very much. Many funny and insightful stories. You really get a feel for what the life of an umpire is like...the good, the bad, and the ugly.
A safe call for baseball fans to read........2004-01-08
I was given this book to read while I was sick in bed. I love baseball, but I probably would not have picked up this book on my own. I was not, however, at all disappointed. Ken Kaiser's book made for a wonderful read. He (or his co-author) correctly understood that this type of autobiography is only of interest as it pertains to the world of baseball, so there is very little about Kaiser's personal life away from the job.
Kaiser's anecdotes are often funny and very revealing of the umpire's job. He dispels many ideas of how an umpire makes certain calls. Much of these myths are voiced by sportscasters/writers who like to sound as if they know the inside scoop of the game including the mind of the umps.
I knew of Kaiser's name when he umpired, but I was mostly neutral about him, unlike my positive thoughts about the delightful Ron Luciano, or the less happy thoughts of someone like Rich Garcia. His stories also make clear that what some believe as the self importance of the current umpires is nothing new to the game, but their working conditions have certainly improved.
The book ends sadly, though, with Kaiser an apparent victim of the Richie Phillips led union. Don't get me wrong, Kaiser is a big fellow and capable of making up his own mind, but the former union's advise was equaled in absurdity by the former air traffic controllers union. The result was predictable and the game is not better off. Kaiser deserves much credit for providing a well articulated defense of the umpire's job, his tributes to Ron Luciano, the Ripkens and his blasts at Earl Weaver, sports journalists, and the baseball hierarchy.
Good stories but skewed viewpoint.......2003-12-20
The best parts of this book are the stories about what it was like to be a minor league and major league umpire. The worst parts, from my perspective, are in Kaiser's biased views about the umpires' labor problems and the quality of umpiring in the majors. Kaiser goes on at length about how every umpire has his own strike zone, and complains about the attempts to standardize it. While it's true that calling balls and strikes is very difficult and that absolute standardization is probably impossible, it's also true that several umpires' strike zones had gotten completely ridiculous (Eric Gregg would regularly call strikes on pitches several inches outside, for example).
Kaiser says he trusted union head Richie Phillips too much when he agreed to resign along with most other major league umps. The problem wasn't just one of trust - it was one of arrogance. The umpires thought they were bigger than the game, that a mass resignation would force the owners to come crawling. They also failed to consider whom they were dealing with. Sandy Alderson accepted the mass resignation. This is the one time in labor history that a union broke itself. Major League Baseball owners have historically been poor labor negotiators, but they finally ran into a group of people who were worse. Kaiser doesn't face up to any of this, in my opinion. He admits it was a mistake to sign his resignation letter, but apart from that he seems to see himself as a victim.
I think the book is worth reading, as long as one takes some of Kaiser's views with a grain of salt.
A Great Book.......2003-10-25
I loved this book. It literally made me laugh until I cried. I couldn't put it down. I loved reading about behind the scenes in baseball and I especially enjoyed walking down memory lane picturing Ken Kaiser on the field. A great read, highly recommended, and a note to Mr. Kaiser..........I hope you win your battle with MLB, you deserve it. You were a great umpire, hang in there. As a great lover of baseball, I still can appreciate the job you did, even if I didn't always agree. Good Luck! Everyone else.........buy the book and give it as gifts. It makes a wonderful reading experience.

A FUNDAMENTAL GUIDE TO THE SCREENWRITING PROCESS. .......2006-09-07
For most of us, becoming a successful screenwriter is an uphill struggle. Yet in the beginning I was confident that after reading a number of how-to books I would quickly blaze a trail to screenwriting success. I was The Little Engine That Could. But after writing three screenplays, I found myself no closer to the top of the hill than when I started. My head was a jumbled mess of screenwriting teachers' theories from 12 Steps to 15 Beats, so when I came up with a couple of great characters for my next script, I was no longer sure where to begin. Fortunately, just as with my romantic heroine and her hero, Duncan's book and I found each other at just the right time. When I opened "A Guide to Screenwriting Success" and read the first line of the first chapter, "Where do I start?" I knew I had found the perfect guide.
Duncan takes a very clear and practical approach to teaching the essential and fundamental skills every writer should master on the path to screenwriting success. His book is divided into three sections. The first deals with writing the screenplay, the second with rewriting it, and the third section is on writing for television. In the back of the book you'll find a wonderful appendix that includes specific templates to help you with your writing, as well as a structure analysis of the film Witness.
As I began reading the first section, I soon realized I was being guided step-by-step through the process of writing a screenplay from premise to Fade Out. In fact, this is the first how-to book I've owned that I felt was useful enough to keep open and next to me on my desk as I wrote. While all three sections are full of practical advice and insights, I will comment on the first section in detail as this is the one I used to develop and write the first draft of my screenplay.
Chapter 1 offers helpful tips on how to develop a solid movie premise and includes a listing of sample movie premises as a guide.
Chapter 2 deals with inventing interesting characters and introduces you to "the five points of character arc." Duncan discusses the importance of character biographies and includes his Character Development Template to help get you started.
Chapter 3 teaches you how to craft a strong story, taking into account such things as the central question you want to explore, the Act One metaphor, visual motifs, the protagonist's major moral dilemma, subplots, and runners, to name a few. He includes his very helpful Basic Story Development Template to get you started. Then comes creating your story's synopsis. Here he prompts you with about 15 insightful and story-provoking questions to help get your creative engines revved such as in Act One "what forces the protagonist into a new situation?" and in Act Two "how does he or she fail this time for the first major setback?"
Chapter 4 - to me, this section alone is worth the price of the book. Here he teaches you how to use structure to frame an engaging story. Duncan says that "structure is really just guidelines that help to keep you on the track of good storytelling. It's a way of thinking about your story, not a way of writing it." He discusses various techniques such as linear versus nonlinear storytelling, flashbacks, foreshadowing, and subplot. He includes his Love Story Development Template as a guide to use for plotting your romance, if you chose to include one. Then he gets down to the specifics of what to include in each of the three acts. I found his advice for Act 2 particularly helpful as I tend to lose my momentum here. Duncan shows you how to break Act 2 into four, 15-minute mini-dramas. I found this to be a much more manageable, as well as enjoyable, process for me. He also includes his Story Structure Development Template and shows you an example of one of his own scripts in the template. He also teaches you how to take your story synopsis that you created in Chapter 3 and expand it into a scene outline.
Chapter 5 introduces you to visual descriptions and dialogue. This is where you'll find the technical information such as screenplay formatting and camera directions, how to format a flashback scene, intercutting scenes to create tension and suspense, and finally, the correct use of dialogue to write your scenes.
I am just beginning to rewrite my script following the rewriting process in Part 2. With Duncan's book, I have finally completed a first draft that I am proud of and as I continue to work my way through the process and toward screenwriting success, I can actually see the top of the hill.

Even popular textbooks in strategic management (Wheelen and Hunger, Davis, etc.), which are oriented toward more thoughtful study of the subject, do a better job presenting a sound applied process in strategic planning. Don't waste your money.
