Book Description

She is the heiress to a legacy of power, wealth, unfulfilled promise, and unspeakable tragedy. Her father was gunned down before a stunned world forty years ago, forever changing the course of history. Her mother became the most celebrated American woman of the twentieth century -- an icon of style, glamour, and personal courage. Her brother was the most promising Kennedy of his generation -- a global heartthrob who was killed when his plane crashed within sight of his mother's estate on Martha's Vineyard. Through it all, the sole surviving member of Camelot's First Family, Caroline Kennedy, has remained largely a mystery. Until now. In the manner of his #1 New York Times bestsellers The Day Diana Died and The Day John Died, as well as his other bestselling books on the Kennedys, Jack and Jackie and Jackie After Jack, Christopher Andersen draws on important sources -- many speaking here for the first time -- to provide a full, compelling portrait of Caroline, the young wife and mother left to carry on in her legendary family's name. Among the revelations:

Sweet Caroline: Last Child of Camelot is an often moving, always captivating look at the life of one little girl who was handed more than her share of heartache -- and has not only survived but flourished. It is the story of America's daughter.

4 out of 5 stars Wow! Tarnished Camelot.......2007-08-20

A lot of celebrity biographies, or "tell-alls", I take with a grain of salt, but this one seemed very credible when I was reading it. Most of the author's sources were people from the Kennedy's inner circle, including Pierre Salinger, Ben Bradlee etc. I didn't think this book would expose anything new, but I was actually quite surprised and intrigued. Most often I was surprised by the behavior of Jackie Kennedy and new facets of her character were revealed that made me see her in a totally different light from her Camelot image (an image which she created). A fascinating page turner!

5 out of 5 stars An intimate portrait of the Kennedy's America's royalty .......2006-07-14

Not only does this book do a fabulos job of detailing the intimate life of Caroline the only remaining survior of Camelot. But it also gives an imtimate look of the lives of her family. Jackie, John and John Jr. And even the before and after family events surrounding the assination of her father President John F. Kennedy. Whom Caroline herself, first heard about the assination from the radio. Also intimate details of the power and control that Jackie exerted over her family. Her (Jackie) extreme drive to obtain her vast wealth and to protect the family image and to shelter her and her children's privacy from the public-at all costs. The struggles that Caoroline faced with being a Kennedy, how she could't understand why she was famous for nothing more than her name. So, if you like me, enjoy reading about the intimate life of America's royal family, this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars interesting, new insights.......2006-05-09

this was a good book, and we got to know a lot about caroline, and how sweet she was, despite her tragedies. it broke my heart to learn that she always felt neglected without a strong male figure in her life, especially since her mother centered all her efforts on her son having a strong father figure, or risk having him "grow up to be a fruit." yet, caroline made it through. i absolutely felt sorry for her, and i don't even know how the erroneous belief that jackie kennedy onassis was such a great mother has lasted up until today. she spent most of her time on vacations and shopping, and sent her kids off to boarding school when they were so young, spending little time with them. i feel caroline suffered greatly from it, since she got taken care of mostly by nannies, and not so much by her parents, since her dad was killed when she was young, and her mother was so into shopping and money that she neglected her daughter's needs regarding the idolization her daughter felt for her father, and being there for her in this aspect. overall, a great book

2 out of 5 stars A Book About the Kennedy Family.......2004-08-21

Andersen misleads the reader when he markets this book as a book about Caroline Kennedy. In fact this author does nothing more than re-hash everything that has already been written about the family. He sells it as a book about Caroline simply because he constantly uses the possessive form of her name to refer to the actual main characters in this book (Caroline's mother, Caroline's brother, Caroline's father etc.).After reading this book, I realized that this is because Caroline has lived a rather simple and scandel free life. The only remarkable thing about Caroline's life is that it's not that remarkable. Like so many Americans, she cooks her children breakfast every morning, video tapes their school pageants, and considers being their mom her most rewarding job in life. Caroline is to be commended for her stellar academic record and her accomplishments as an author. However, without the last name "Kennedy" no one would find her life particularly compelling reading. There simply isn't enough provacative information out there to fill up an entire book about Caroline alone. Unlike her mother, she wasn't first lady of the United States, married to one of the most beloved presidents, she didn't hold up an entire nation during three of the darkest days in our nation's history, she didn't marry a wealthy shipping magnate from whom she inherited 26 million dollars and then went on to parlay that money into 200 million. I could go on and on about Jackie but in the interest of brevity, I think you've got the picture.
That said, I believe Mr. Andersen has done a great disservice to his reader when he sold them a book complete with the tacit implication that we were to really learn who Caroline Kennedy was as a person. The information may well be out there but Mr. Andersen has yet to find it.

2 out of 5 stars Not only "same old, same old"... but inaccurate.......2004-01-14

I have read all of the Kennedy biographies and there is very little new information in this biography. The first part has been covered in all of the others, and the second part has been covered in the tabloids, which makes we question the accuracy of anything here that has not been lifted from another source. I noted two parts of this book that do not appear to be in keeping with what has been well documented. 1. The books states, that on April 4, 1968, Caroline was in her classroom when a teacher came in and whispered to her teacher that Martin Luther King had been shot. Quick research on the Web states this happened at about 4:30PM EST..Are 11 year olds in class at that time? 2. The books states that when visiting the White House JFK Jr. told then President Nixon, that he used to play under his desk. Everyone knows that the famous Kennedy desk was removed when he died, and not used again until it was brought back by President Clinton.

    Book Description

Drucker provides the most thorough examination ever attempted of one of the most complex characters in recent sports history. He has combined meticulous research and dozens of interviews with his first-hand experience to craft a book that is both a comprehensive biography of Connors and a memoir of the author's life. as it intersected and ultimately clashed with the tennis superstar.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars More than just tennis.......2007-07-25

I was pleasantly surprised to find that there is much more to this book than tennis. Drucker's biographical information about Connors is fascinating; even as a tennis fan I really knew very little about him and mostly had only heard of his late career heroics at the U.S. Open.

What I really enjoyed about this book was Drucker's personal story. Although he wasn't directly involved in the professional tennis world (until later on) his book shows that professional sports, and more than that, idols in general, can directly effect our personal lives. As the title indicates, Jimmy Connors impacted Joel Druckers' life in a very real way. As much as I loved the tennis side of the book, the personal interest slant is what kept me reading.

This book is worth your reading time. Thanks Joel Drucker!

3 out of 5 stars Good book, but Jimmy Connors has changed a lot.......2007-06-28

I read this book with great interest, as I befriended Jimmy Connors at the local tennis courts in several years ago, shortly before this book came out, and got a chance to talk to him on an almost daily basis about a variety of subjects while practicing strokes against the tennis wall. He was quite humble and that does not quite match the nature of the narcissist described by the author in this book. This book is very well-written and researched, but during the couple of years I knew Connors, I found him to be quite self-effacing when it came to his immensely successful career and persona. He looked back on it like it was a fun and exciting time then, but had clearly moved on and was trying to find a new purpose in his life. He did not appear unhappy, as indicated, just somewhat bored and always coming up with new ideas of what he wanted to do next with his life. He really wanted to do something meaningful for ordinary people who enjoyed playing tennis, but also still clearly enjoys being in the company of top players, as is evident from his coaching of Andy Roddick. He appeared anything but selfish, as he volunteered for the homeless and clearly cares a lot about animals.
I observed that Jimmy was in a lot of pain sometimes, but he never once complained. In spite of his pain, Jimmy kept coming back to practice his play against two of the best local tennis players (a couple), and from what I observed, he bonded the most with the female, older player, a seasoned tennis pro. Jimmy, by himself on one side of the court, managed to wear out these other two players on the other side completely, which was quite amazing. After all, he was in his early 50s and in pain. While on the courts playing, I did notice, like the author, that he changed into a different persona. He expects everyone to give their best at all times and got frustrated when this did not happen. I find this to be an admirable quality that pushes people to be their best, and I'm sure this part of Jimmy's persona influenced the author's life profoundly and perhaps saved it.
Jimmy always did appear most comfortable around women, as the author indicates, but in a strictly platonic way. He seemed very devoted to his wife, Patti, and children who occasionally came to the local courts, as well. I observed several times that he was indeed not as friendly or close to other men, but what do you expect from a person who is taught to beat other men at all cost and win no matter what. Call it paranoia, as the author does, but is it really surprising?
Having met many highly intelligent people throughout my life, I'd say Jimmy Connors is one of the smartest people I've ever met, and he may not hold a Ph.D, but he does not need one either. I can understand the author's fascination with Connors, however, as Connors is a very interesting person.
They always say it's lonely at the top, and to get there, I think you have to be somewhat of a narcissist, highly competitive, power hungry and have a very positive attitude. It's the survival of the fittest....
This book focuses mostly on the young Jimmy of the past and, of course, on the author himself. Jimmy has clearly moved on with his life, still has a strong spirit, is very competitive, healthy and focused, but has definitely mellowed. He is an admirable human being, unique in many ways, and if more people would adopt his positive attitude and determination, he could save many people's lives. An interesting book, and especially for those who wish to find direction in their lives.

5 out of 5 stars The Parts About Connors Are Exceptional.......2006-04-04

Joel Drucker is an indefatigable researcher and an insightful writer. Though tennis writers tend to be at the bottom of the food chain when measured against golf, boxing and baseball writers, Drucker does his profession proud. The biographical information about Connors, based upon meticulous research, is at times, outstanding. He paints a portrait of the tennis great that few have ever seen. Drucker explores Connors' relationship with his mother Gloria and grandmother Bertha in-depth. Indeed, knowing his relationship to them is the foundation of not only his tennis career but also his life.
My main problem with the book is that Drucker was never the insider he portrays himself to have been with Connors. Perhaps, his infatuation with the charismatic "Jimbo" led him to conjure up a make-believe inner circle relationship where none existed. I can stomach this because I do not believe Drucker believes otherwise. I truly think that he viscerally believes he was thisclose to Connors. But he wasn't. To me, this calls into question other assertions and conclusions he made and arrived at. I've examined them thoroughly and have no problem with their efficacy.
Simply put, this is a book that Drucker had to write. Undoubtedly it served as a catharsis, ridding his soul of haunting demons that needed exorcising. As he describes his relationship with his brother, its like hearing chalk screech on the blackboard. Yet, it had to be written.
For the diehard Connors fans, this is a must book. For those who loved tennis in its heyday, you won't find a more compelling book. Most of the other tennis books on the personalities from this period were written, or so they read, solely to capitalize on the subject matter and to make a dollar. This book was written from a soul that is, at times, tormented, yet remains sincere. The result is a one-of-a-kind book that does justice to Connors, tennis and the writer.

    1 out of 5 stars Utterly nauseating.......2006-01-28

I coudn't agree more with the Amazon review here by Milacik Najdrahsi - I, too, was very much looking forward to reading this, having idolised Connors as a teenager myself, but this book is one of the worst I have ever read, a horrid, self-regarding author's ego trip, replete with the worst kind of American psycho-babble and pitiful philosophising about personal family difficulties, self improvement and the pursuit of 'success'. There is a prolonged, ghastly, obsequious chronicle of a highly ambiguous and suspect 'friendship' with Connors together with endless, embarrassing accounts of Mr. Drucker's own laughable tennis exploits (or 'career', as he likes to call it), with some atrocious writing to boot. It was extremely painful to cringe my way through to the end. I like to think that if Connors himself has read this he would have found it as loathsome as I did. A zero star rating from me... avoid at all costs, it will make you ill.

5 out of 5 stars More Than Your Average Sports Biography.......2005-12-23

Joel's book is much more than I expected. There were definitely detailed descriptions of Connors tennis history and his big matches, such as with McEnroe, Lendl, Krickstein, etc. But this book is much deeper than your typical sports biography.

Joel delved very deeply into the persona of Jimmy Connors. In doing so, Joel was able to better understand himself and the struggles that he faced. And as I read the book, I also felt that I better understood myself and what was important to me. For example, at one point in Joel's career he discussed a potential career change with Jimmy. Jimmy talked about moving forward one step at a time. It was the perfect advice from Jimmy Connors, whose game, as Joel describes, is based on perfect footwork and taking every point and match one step at a time. Joel also discusses Jimmy's love and extreme dedication to the game, and how Jimmy's whole life growing up was dedicated to becoming a better tennis professional.

After reading Joel's book, I became a fan of Jimmy Connors. Not because Jimmy was as smart or witty or naturally talented as John McEnroe. But because Jimmy was the ultimate warrior who dedicated his life to becoming the best tennis player he could possibly be. And when he competed in tennis, the craft of his life, he never gave up or backed down. From Joel's analysis of Jimmy, Joel was then better able to face the difficult challenges in his own life with a Connors-like attitude. I found this very inspirational.

                          Book Description

"S.T.A.R. Chess" is built around four themes: Strategy--making a successful plan; Tactics--the detailed execution of a plan; Attack--the ultimate goal of the plan; and Reaction--meeting the opponent's ideas. Acclaimed author Paul Motwani discusses these four elements of successful chess with the same wit and clarity that has characterized his previous writings on the game. Here he applies his original, mnemonic-based approach to the strategy and tactics of attack, defense, and counterattack. This book is packed with instructive model examples starting from a wide spectrum of opening systems, presenting a treasure trove of ideas to surprise even the most experienced of opponents. Interspersed with the instruction are test positions and puzzles to improve your skills in reasoning -- necessary if you are to become a brighter chess S.T.A.R. yourself!

Paul Motwani's books are stimulating, and I find myself able to work through long variations in his books more than I can in the works of other authors, because of a certain contagious enthusiasm that he has for the game. I like how he ties chess into life, and somehow he gets me to work through his books, while many so-called classics put me to sleep. STAR Chess (low-priced here at Amazon) is a wonderful book. Working through the chapter on the Sicilian Dragon (focused on the Yugoslav) is alone worth the price of the book. This is along book packed with chess, and with other fun things, such as word and math problems, thrown in to keep you alert. One gets the feeling that this author really wants his readers to love and aimprove at chess. I heartily recommend all of his books. Grab them while you still can!

                          From the Publisher

This book has been the springboard from which millions have come to understand the basic truths about economics--and the economic fallacies responsible for inflation, unemployment, high taxes, and recession. H.L. Mencken called Hazlitt "one of the few economists in human history who could really write." Nobel Laureate F.A. Hayek hailed this book as "a brilliant performance."

"If there were a Nobel Prize for clear economic thinking, Mr. Hazlitt's book would be a worthy recipient... like a surgeon's scalpel, it cuts through... much nonsense that has been written in recent years about our economic ailments." -- John W. Hanes, former Undersecretary of the Treasury

5 out of 5 stars brilliant introduction to economic thinking.......2003-08-25

the joy - the joy! this book opened my eyes to the wonderful world of economic thinking, especially socalled political economy. this book, using insights of the austrian school of economics, totally debunks the great myths of the social democratic economic policies, showing them to be utterly destructive and almost always counterproductive, even from the eyes of those advocating the policies. in this line of thinking hazlitt echoes the great genius ludwig von mises who with rigorous logical arguments set out to prove that economic interventionism (or what we today refer to as the mixed economy) can not work.

hazlitts book is inspired by the proto-austrian thinker frederic bastiat (ca. 1800 - 1850) and his famous essay 'what is seen and what is not seen' - the essence being that any good economic policy should always take account of the long term effects on every group within society and not only the short term effects on some special interest group.

after finishing this really easy to read introduction to economic reasoning you should continue with the just as easy to understand 'economics for real people' by gene callahan as well as the essay collection 'planning for freedom' by mises.

5 out of 5 stars Mises Made Easy.......2002-12-01

Henry Hazlitt is best known for this brilliant work, one of the most concise and persuasive defenses of the free market ever written. One reason why socialism and statism appeal to the common man is that government actions are immediate and dramatic: they give the impression that something is being done about a specific problem or crisis. To show that government intervention in the economy isn't wise, one must "look not merely at the immediate but at the longer effect of any act or policy; one must trace the consequences of that policy not merely for one group but for all groups."

Hazlitt proceeds to apply the above lesson to numerous government actions. By drawing the reader's attention to the unseen effects, the failure of socialism is exposed. Take for example government "jobs programs." If the government employs 500 people, one might think that government has "created" 500 jobs. However, government had to tax its citizens to fund these jobs. Had the money been left in the hands of taxpayers, their spending would have resulted in an equivalent number of employed individuals. Government didn't "create" jobs - it merely destroyed jobs in the private sector. On issue after issue, Hazlitt demonstrates that government intervention in the economy fails to achieve its stated goals (although its real goal - an increase in government power - is always achieved). In addition, many basic economic falicies are refuted, such as "machines destroy jobs," and workers need "to earn enough money to buy back the products."

If you are new to the study of economics, don't stop here. Be sure to read Rothbard's "Man, Economy and State"; Von Mises' "Human Action"; and Reisman's "Capitalism." They are the twentieth century's "big three" works in economics.

5 out of 5 stars A BEGINNER CAN START THINKING THRU CONSEQUENCES AFTER THIS.......2002-07-11

Henry Hazlitt's one lesson consists of learning to view ALL the long-term consequences of an economic event, not just the short-term benefits of the special-interest groups.

The rest of the book analyzes different common economic fallacies and misunderstandings, one chapter per issue, and shows the error in thinking that makes each one a fallacy.

Here are some of the issues tackled by this book:

-The fallacy of the Broken Window (ie. the broken window brings prosperity to the repairman).
                          -Spread-the-work schemes.
                          -The fetish of full employment.
                          -"Parity" prices.
                          -Who's protected by tariffs?
                          -Saving the _____ industry.
                          -Government price-fixing.
                          -Rent control.
                          -Minimum wage laws.
                          -Do unions really raise wages?
                          -The function of profits.
                          -The mirage of inflation.

and several more (there are 25 chapters, total, in this book).

If you want to get a good start on evaluating economic situations on your own, this book will walk you through the process.

O.K., you get the "Buy low, sell high" idea, but listening to Alan Greenspan makes you feel like a 3rd-grader. There is help. Henry Hazlitt's book on economics is it. "Economics in One Lesson" is approachable and clear. Rather than formulas, Hazlitt uses clearly written examples to explain how savings, taxes, tariffs, inflation, price controls and other things we do affect our standard of living.

Especially good is Hazlitt's explaination of unintended consequences. Anyone who ever drove past blocks of abandoned apartment buildings in New York (land of valuable real estate) will appreciate Hazlitt's explaination of the downside of rent control. On a host of topics, "Economics in One Lesson" will leave you saying, "Oh, now I get it!"
