Maria Shriver's warmth, humor, and wisdom are evident on every page of this little book. Inspired by her commencement speech at the College of the Holy Cross, the book contains stories and insights that will be helpful, entertaining, and encouraging to graduates at every stage of life. The lessons themselves--"be willing to fail," "stand your ethical ground," "marriage is a hell of a lot of hard work"--are nothing new. What makes them interesting are the life stories that accompany them and Shriver's personable, friendly style. Reading this book feels like having a cup of coffee with a wise and funny friend. Tales of her first television experiences are surprising and hilarious, and she takes balancing motherhood and career to new levels--imagine postponing an interview with Fidel Castro to get your daughter to her first day of kindergarten! Each chapter is easy to read and ends with a focused lesson--kind of a bullet point from her original speech--that encourages readers to be ultimately true to themselves and their dreams, while cutting through harmful illusions. The last chapter, on laughter, is one to read again and again. Shriver maintains that without laughter not much else matters, and in life's toughest times it's laughter that gets us through. For anyone starting a new adventure--graduation, marriage, parenthood, career shift, or a milestone birthday--Ten Things I Wish I'd Known brings wisdom, laughter, practical suggestions, and a down-to-earth manner together into one fabulous gift. --Jill Lightner

· Starting at the bottom--over and over again· Dealing with--and learning from--the Boss from Hell· Giving up the Wedding Delusion, not to mention that one-way ticket to Happily Ever After· Being asked to bend your principles--by your superiors· Wanting to be a high-powered success and super parent· Knowing that children will both exhaust and sustain you· Facing that terrifying question: "What have I been put on this earth to do?" You could call them notes from life's trenches. Maria Shriver's Ten Things I Wish I'd Known--Before I Went out into the Real World gives us her reflections, confessions, advice, memories, and, most of all, hard-earned lessons . . . all the things we wish we knew before we started out, and that few people ever honestly discuss. Here is the truth about: the price we pay for giving in to our fears, as well as the relief we feel when we finally face them; the humiliation of swallowing our ego so that we can learn from an abusive experience; the rewards of taking risks and the pain of failure; the joy of finding someone we can love and the limitations of every relationship; how it's never too late to tap the wisdom of others, even (especially!) our own parents; and the importance of taking what we do seriously without taking ourselves seriously.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful .......2007-07-02

This book would make a wonderful graduation gift. I wish I would've read it back when I was eighteen-years-old. Although I purchased this book over three years ago, I still come back to it from time to time. She offers so much insight and wisdom, but she also humanizes herself as a woman and teaches her readers that even she has experienced self-doubt and has strived to reach 'perfection' (something she teaches you not to do). She writes about how important it is to start at the bottom because it's where you learn the most and gain character. I especially liked reading about her husband and children. She and her family are so much more normal than anyone would ever think.

5 out of 5 stars Mrs. Ahnold is a smart cookie!.......2007-01-22

I am 56 and had I had this book to read in 1968 when I graduated high school I might have had the tools to do things a little better through my 20's and 30's. She gives you a rundown on what realistically to expect out of live, love, career and everything in between. I may have even been able to avoid my ex-husband!!!

This is a must gift for any young person, maybe even younger than a high school graduate. It could actually put a kids expectations into the realm of reality without putting a damper on any of the joys of life. This is not a book that a conservative religious advocate would have to avoid. It contains simple comman sense about life and how it differs from what kids would often see on TV, movies, or any other media they would encounter. It doesn't tell you what belief system is best, just what life is most apt to hand you on any given day.

It is easy reading and not very beefy, so even non-readers would benefit. They could use it as a reference book for a specific situation.

Great Birthday or Graduation or Holiday gift and reasonable priced, too.

I bought Maria's book "What's Heaven" for my Granddaughter when her Grandmother (my mother) died 6 years ago. Now my Granddaughter will graduate from high school next year and Maria has followed her to college, with her last 2 books. Next I will buy my Granddaughter the Marlo Thomas books. As a Grandmother I believe it does take a Village. My Granddaughter will take 2 real good role models with her to college and now we have to set her free.

3 out of 5 stars Worth the Read, but Not the Money.......2006-01-05

Maria did have some excellent points. The majority of the book is just an autobiography, though, and I skimmed through those parts. My advice would be to stop by the book store and look at the table of contents and then the very end where she gives a list of some other things she wishes she knew, because they explain themselves. A lot of her things I already knew, and she points out that she's not trying to help us avoid those things, just let us know we're not alone. If the great, talented Maria could get through life, then we can too! That was sarcasm.

4 out of 5 stars A quick pick-me-up........2005-11-07

After seeing and admiring the interaction between Maria Shriver and her mother on the Oprah Winfrey show a few months ago, I decided I wanted to read her newest book, "And One More Thing Before You Go." My library didn't have it but they did have this one and so I decided to take it home.

What I appreciated most about this book were the tidbits of wisdom about humility, and the ways we should appreciate ourselves and not allow others to beat us down. I like how Shriver says that humility is about having a realistic self-image-- not beating ourselves up for not being good enough and not settling for mediocrity. I liked Shriver's advice that we are not superwomen (or supermen) and we can not be excellent in every area so we should decide what areas are most important to us and make realistic goals to strive for. It inspired me to think about what areas of my life I'd like to improve in and what areas can wait until a different phase in life.

4 out of 5 stars People teens admire talk about God.......2007-04-13

Author Amy Hammond Hagberg wanted to help teens--her own and others--answer questions about God, including the big question: "How do you know he's real?"

Hagberg wrote to sports stars, recording artists and other celebrities, asking them to reflect on their life experiences and share how the reality of God was making a difference to them personally and professionally. The responses she received--from NBA players, Christian musicians, 'American Idol' contestants and others--are honest, revealing, and often compelling.

The resulting book is a collection of celebrity essays: mini-bios that focus on the reality of God in the midst of media attention, success and failure, and broken relationships. Contributors include Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic basketball team, quarterback David Carr of the Houston Texans, and popular Christian recording artist Clay Crosse.

Some of the interviews are especially helpful for Hagberg's original target readers: teens. Among these, Chrissy Conway of 'Zoe Girl' talks about her parents' divorce, the party scene, and the twists and turns along her personal career path in ways that connect with teens and with anyone who has ever considered attempting a career in music.

Hagberg is a gifted and skilled writer who keeps readers turning the pages as she unpacks celebrity affirmations of the presence of God in their lives. A great gift book for readers from teens through Gen X, but the stories here will interest readers of any age!

Note: Reviewer Dr. David Frisbie is an author and Executive Director of The Center for Marriage & Family Studies in Del Mar, California.

Armchair Interviews says: Anything that can help teens understand their role in living a good life is good.

5 out of 5 stars Celebrities share their faith.......2007-03-11

This is an ideal book to give to people who have questions about becoming a Christian, and who love sports and music celebrities.

44 extreme sports and music celebrities tell their stories in this book, from Jonny Lang (recording artist), to Barlow Girl (rock group), Kimiko Soldati (Olympic diving), CJ Hobgood (surfer), Dwight Howard (NBA player, Orlando Magic), Mick Hannah (downhill mountain bike racer), Jimmie McGuire (professional motocross rider) and more.

They share hard times they faced, how they became Christians and how their paths are more joyful due to their faith. Being a Green Bay Packer fan I turned to Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's story of growing up in South Central Los Angeles with a tough background, a Muslim dad and a Christian mom, and how his becoming a Christian led to his current happy family life and NFL career. Christian Hosoi, professional skateboarder, after serious drug problems, is now leading a skateboarding ministry.

The two page "God's Road Map" at the end of each celebrity's story contains perceptive questions and Scriptures. Sports and music lovers will enjoy this book, and it can even be a "past watchful dragons book" that will steer doubting people on a new clear path.

    3 out of 5 stars god unplugged.......2007-02-02

God Unplugged by Ammy Hagberg was very interesting. It is 403 pages long and was published in 2006 by Destiny Image. In the story top athletes, musicians, and also stars tell how god helped them get where they wanted to be and changed their lives.
In the story there were 44 celebrity reflections on true life experiences with god. Many of these celebrities have been extremely low in their lives and god has pulled them out of them. Also in some cases they have had no luck in there lives and finally achieved their goals after they gave there lives god. All of these people believe that god has either given them opportunities or even the strength to work through where they were to get to where they want to be.
I thought that this was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and seeing how god has changed all of these people's lives. The strengths of this book are that it has top named celebrities that people actually want to read about. The weakness of this book is that there is nothing to find out nest so you don't have a reason to keep reading. I did like how god actually gave them the strength to continue and succeed in life. The writing was very boring to me, but I liked the idea.
The book gave a lasting effect on me because I have a saint Christopher necklace that my grandma gave to me before she passed away and that keeps me safe when I race motorcross. So, I think that god has a great power on us. I would recommend this book, it will make you think.

5 out of 5 stars After reading this, you certainly KNOW he is real!.......2007-01-25

Truly, this, and the book before this, are really awesome books!
    ** Why?
Because they give some very good insights into other peoples way to God. Not only that, if you don't know the Bible inside and out (and even if you do, actually!), there are quotations from the Bible explaining the why and hows, depending on the story of the person interviewed.
All this, with Amy Hagbergs very nice way of writing (down to earth serious mixed with a nice blend of humor) makes this book a pleasure to read!
Personally, I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It might be those who Seek, or those who have found, it doesn't matter, in my opinion! :)

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book!.......2007-01-24

What a great book! Amy Hagberg has gathered some of today's biggest sports and music celebs to talk about how they know God is real. This book is in stark contrast to so many of today's depressing, tragedy-focused headlines. And the list of celebrities is impressive! [...]

    Book Description

When Jon Gruden asks his Tampa Bay Bucs, "Do you love football?!" it's to remind them why they pull on their shoulder pads every Sunday morning. It's not about the money or the fame; it's about their passion for what they do.

And passion is something that has fueled Gruden's entire career. From his college playing days and his climb through the coaching ranks -- from college to assistant coaching jobs with the NFL's elite teams, to his first head coach job with the Oakland Raiders, and finally, with the Tampa Bay Bucs -- his meteoric rise is unparalleled. Underneath it all, though, he's just a humble, hardworking, no-nonsense guy who has no hobbies: "I'm not a scratch golfer. I don't know how to bowl. I can't read the stock market. Hell, I have a hard time remembering my wife's cell phone number. But I can call 'Flip Right Double X Jet 36 Counter Naked Waggle at 7 X Quarter' in my sleep."

Now, in this motivational memoir, Gruden provides insight into what makes him tick. Do You Love Football?! is an intimate look at his life as a player, coach, and head coach, as well as the principles that have made him the hottest coach in the NFL.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what you'd expect - a fun book to read.......2006-01-21

If you want x's and o's, this isn't the book. If you want to see where Jon Gruden has been and what he's done & thought in each place, this is the exact book for you. The writing style is conversational - you'll feel he's sitting in the room with you. You will not get bored. Criticisms that he didn't go into enough detail are unfair. At the end of the book, you'll wish it continued on to cover the last two seasons. I'd welcome a sequel.

4 out of 5 stars Passion Drives Success.......2005-12-13

This book is about Jon Gruden's love and passion for the game of football. He was born into the coaching profession as his father was a football coach and scout. Once he identified coaching as his calling, Gruden's road to becoming a head coach in the NFL is an interesting one. It simply shows that dedication, hard work, and aligning yourself with quality people and organizations (e.g., George Siefert (San Francisco 49ers), Mike Holmgren (Green Bay) in your chosen profession eventually pay off.

Football lovers will enjoy this book as there are quite a few stories that include play-calling and football terminology. A good read.

    5 out of 5 stars football phenominon.......2005-11-20

This book is one of my favorites, one reason being that I love football. But you dont have to love football to like this book. In this book you read about how Jon Gruden, one of my favorite coaches works his way up his ladder of success. This book can teach you a lot about work ethic, motivation and self desire. He also talks about how he made it as far as he is right now because he had a great learning ability, wouldnt give up on any of his dreams and kept at what he wanted to do, be a profesional football coach. But there is one downside to this book as it is a very short book, but it is a very interesting and fun book to read. I had a realy good time reading this book and i hope you do too.

    4 out of 5 stars RELAX PEOPLE.......2005-09-28

I am not a huge Gruden fan ever since he left my Philadelphia Eagles, but I read this book and have to say that it is written like he thinks, 100 mph. I do not mind that he glossed over some things because he was trying to wrap up his entire life to date in under 200 pages. I think it did a great job showing how an NFL coach moves through the ranks, the importance of experience at the different coaching positions, as well as the time line of interest in the Post Bill Walsh era where everyone seems connected in the football family. I enjoyed his book and I went from making fun of the guy before hand, to respecting his success at such an early age. As for winning with Dungy's guys - yes, he did do that, but now that he has a running game in 2005, his team looks right back on top. Something people should realize about the NFL that is important. Coaches, for the most part, have all walked the same line and know all the same Xs and Os. In the end their success finges on their ability to work long hours and prepare, have good salary cap management by their GMs and have the players to win games. Gruden is a beast of a hard worker and knows his stuff, you may want to take some notes about his work ethic if you get anything out of this book. I have read just about every football book there is, no joke, so I know what I am talking about. If you want a pulitzer prize writer - try When Pride Still mattered, if you want a quick fun read that inspires a work ethic, this is a good book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Coach, Good Book.......2005-04-03

I enjoyed spending a few hours with a person who truely loves and knows football. I have alot of respect for Jon as a coach and a person. I did get some insight on his career and his philosophies. He is a great motivator, that gets me charged up not only about football, but life in general.

WOW! This book, or shall I say encyclopedia, is amazing! As the title states, it covers 1894 to the 2001 Oscars. It includes original posters and stills for more movies than you thought existed. I really enjoyed looking at the original posters for all the different styles and seeing how they've changed over the years. Highlights from each year are included as well as Oscar winners (when applicable), and story snippets about random movies that came out that year. A must have!

The book has Maine-inspired designs such as Blueberries, Pine Trees, and Puffins (cute penguin-like birds) and such charming motifs as Country Geese and Crayon Kids. Also has two patterns for Christmas stockings. For Mainers, there is also a State of Maine pillow.

Everyone can use a hat or an extra pair of mittens and they don't take a lot of wool to make. See my list (listmania) for other hat and mitten books.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent For What It's Designed To Do.......2003-03-11

THE MANAGER'S BOOK OF QUESTIONS is an invaluable resource for developing an in-depth, probing but fair, job interview. It provides questions in a variety of categories designed to assist the employer/manager/supervisor to identify the most qualified applicant and the "best fit" for the position. Questions are organized into sections for the purpose of determining a variety of employee characteristics and attributes. For example, some of the sections help identify motivation, the applicant's concept of teamwork, their ability to handle stress, and to think quickly. Other questions explore background, past work history, and salary expectations.

I recently was given a very short timeline to interview applicants for three different positions without having any previous questions available. I used THE MANAGER'S BOOK OF QUESTIONS as the basis for interviews for each of the three positions. There was enough variety in the questions so each interview was customized to fit the needs of each position. It gave me confidence to ask professional and relevant questions and some of the interviewees even commented about how tough but fair the questions were.

After using THE MANAGER'S BOOK OF QUESTIONS and experiencing success first-hand, I highly recommend it for anyone serious about conducting quality job interviews.

5 out of 5 stars When it's your turn to ask the questions.......2002-02-15

If you liked the Manager's Book of Questions, you might want to check out a sequel: 201 Best Questions to Ask on Your Interview. At some point in the interview, the interviewer will ask you if you have any questions. If you don't, you may as well kiss the job goodbye. Interviewers these days evaluate you as much by the questions you ask as the answers you give. So this book provides some of the proven questions that you can ask to show that you are rady to add value to the company from Day One.

Here is the one that convinced me that I would like this book. It's from Chapter 7 ("Can you take the heat?") on page 84.

"Q. When you've had a really GOOD day at work and you go home and kick back and you feel satisfied, what was it about that day that made you feel really good?

"Q.When you have had a really BAD day at work and you go home and feel upset, what was it about that day that made you feel really upset?

"A. In answer to the first question, technical people will offer as a reason for a really good day the solution of a really juicy technical problem. A bad day for them is often when they had to deal with other people. This is important information, because the jobs I'm staffing are people jobs. These are very effective questions in distinguishing candidates who may be great technicians but who would be uncomfortable dealing with people to the extend the job requires."

This is an excellent book. I have read a number of other articles and books on interviewing, and I have come across many of the questions in the book, in one form or another. As far as I am concerned, that validates the content of the questions.

The background, however, (the "answers," if you will) is somewhat scant. I didnt feel like I needed it. But I wonder if this were my first book whether or not I would have liked it as much. The author explains the lack of "answers" in the Introduction and his explanation is acceptable.

So here it is, 751 great questions you can pick from!
