Book Description

Derek and Keith Brewer, identical twins from Redondo Beach, went from riding the waves of the California coastline to walking the runways of the world's fashion capitals. This bold, graphic biography chronicles their success story, featuring photographs by fashion's preeminent style-makers-- from Steven Meisel and Patrick Demarchelier to Blake Little and Peggy Sirota-- and showcasing the Brewers' appearances in top magazines, campaigns, and shows, from Esquire, Vogue, and Sassy, to Yves Saint Laurent and Calvin Klein. The Brewers also provide the inside scoop on their beach boyhood and extreme lifestyle, from surfing to snowboarding, and share what it's like to be celebrity twins. Derek and Keith are represented by Q, America's newest model management agency.

Just one of these guys is enough to turn your head...but a matched pair?...Double your pleasure, double your fun...with DOUBLE TAKE, DOUBLE TAKE,....you get the idea. Can you imagine.....?(finish this with your own fantasy)

2 out of 5 stars The Twins Could Have Done Much Better.......2003-05-24

The book is pretty boring. The text is lacking, and skips anything in depth about these twin dudes. The pictures could be so much better. They really skipped over the Joe Magazine affair of their lives. Too bad, as that was the best of the Brewer boys as far as I am concerned. It was real, and heartfelt - this book is not.

5 out of 5 stars Twins.......2002-03-06

They're brothers. They're twins. They're lovers? That's what many of their photographs suggest. Pictures of the twins undressing each other, holding each other, caressing each other, gazing into each other's eyes, and almost kissing each other. I don't know if the brothers were wanting to show the public their incestuous relationship or if the photographer somehow persuaded them to do it but it has made them into two of the most successful male models on the planet and for that I applaud them.

1 out of 5 stars Boo!.......2001-07-17

Written for a child and about as thrilling as watching a Presidential debate on a hot summer day...

Don't waste your money or time on this - not even for a die-hard Brewer fan!

5 out of 5 stars Mirror of Male Beauty.......2001-01-14

The Brewer Twins, Keith & Derek, would, each on his own, be among the most beautiful youths on the planet: it would be difficult to find anyone to match such perfection. But here we see this beauty mirrored - and more than just doubled. These are not just two exquisitely-formed guys who happen to be brothers: they are twins, with the shared intimacy that goes along with that. The striking point about most of the photos in this book is that their physical beauty is complemented and emphasized by the beauty of their friendship and fraternal love for each other. One does not simply admire their beauty: one cannot help but delight also in the sheer joy of seeing such closeness between two guys. We catch a glimpse of something very precious here, something that warms the heart as well as appealing to the eyes. Male beauty does not come better than this: these guys are the stuff of which the Greek myths of Adonis & Narcissus, Achilles & Ganymede are made - only the Greeks never imagined there could be two such fair youths. Buy it: you'll enjoy hours of pleasure gazing upon the beautiful Brewers - I know I have.

The problem with most authorized biographies is just that--they're authorized. They praise, adore, defend, excuse, inspire, whitewash, and love their subjects, which, in the end, conspires to keep the reader at a distance. Tracey Stewart's homage to her late husband Payne Stewart does all of that. It rarely allows a closer view than that available from where she witnessed most of his stirring final round victory in the 1999 U.S. Open: on TV.

Which is too bad, because the sartorially splendid golfer was more interesting and complex than that. Despite his deep family and religious convictions--when he played, he wore a bracelet with initials that stood for "What Would Jesus Do?"--he was certainly no saint; his early reputation as a hell-raiser was matched by a palpable whiff of arrogance later on. His accomplishments--three majors among them--were great, but his flaws were at least as fascinating as his successes. So, of course, was his tragic end, in an almost unimaginably bizarre plane crash not long after his great comeback triumphs in the Open and as a member of the victorious Ryder Cup team.

All the necessary facts are here. So are the various scriptures and devotionals Stewart relied on, the joys he felt in coaching his son's soccer team, his wrenching loss at the '98 Open, and the tears of relief he shed when he won at Pebble Beach--and, of course, Pinehurst--a year later. And so, too, is the occasional startling detail that defines a life--such as his son's request to bury his father in Payne's favorite Jimmy Buffett T-shirt, and Tracey's having to explain that no body was recovered from the plane crash. But too few other moments bring anything approaching that candid closeness. The rest comes off like a life passed through a protective filter, leaving the reader where golfers would rather not be--on the fringe. --Tally Swinfen

Book Description

Written by Tracey Stewart, this is the only authorized biography of Payne Stewart. The book includes a 16-page full-color photo insert depicting the amazing life, faith and career of Payne Stewart.

Download Description

When his life came to a sudden and tragic end on October 25, 1999, Payne Stewart was at the top of his game on every level. In June of 1999, he enjoyed the signature triumph of his career and solidified himself as one of the exemplary personalities in his profession with a victory at the U.S. Open and a place on the coveted winning U.S. Ryder Cup team. However satisfying his professional accomplishments were, it was his personal triumphs that made him stand out. Those closest to Stewart said his family and faith were what mattered most to him. At his funeral, his wife Tracey described him as a devoted husband and father and a devout Christian. She said, "After 18 years of marriage, he was still the most beautiful man I had ever seen, because of what he was on the inside."

Hat's off to Tracey for her work in getting this together. Though lacking in specific details of his past behaivors enough is said to allow the reader to understand the change in his character once he accepted Christ. This book is not another Christian testimony. It contains the elements of a what makes a good man. We are all sinners and a perfect picture is not painted here. Payne was a great golfer and a great man that many could learn from. Then again, just act like you think Jesus would have and you will be close to the mark of Payne. Thank you for a great book Tracey.

5 out of 5 stars Payne Stewart, the best.......2002-10-31

I have recently finished the biography of payne stewart. It was one of the best books I have ever read. From start to finish of the book I was always interested. The best parts of the book is when it talks about all the tournaments he has been in and winning the U.S. open in 1999.

5 out of 5 stars Payne Stewart: The Authorized Biography---A HOLE IN ONE!!.......2002-08-28

What an inspirational book based on the life of Payne Stewart. You could literally feel the love that Tracey had for Payne. No, I am sure that Payne wasn't a saint. Who of us is? But, he was a great man, a great father, and a great golfer who is sadly missed by thousands of his fans and followers.

Payne was a devout Christian who was coming into his own. The scope of what his personal witnessing ministry could have become will now be tested in his death rather than his life. I know that it has served to strengthen my testimony and for that I will forever be indebted to Payne Stewart.

Thanks Tracey and kids for sharing Payne with us!

4 out of 5 stars A Great Man and Great Golfer.......2002-01-17

This book is a must have book about the life and times of one of Golfs most flamboyunt golfer (the knickers) and the way Payne spoke his mind. I bought this book because Payne was one of my favorite golfers. This book was very intresting talked about the ups and downs of life on the PGA tour. I am glad that Payne relized that there is more to life than just golf. Family and relationship with God. This is a must have book.

4 out of 5 stars one great man.......2001-03-18

this book was amazing. granted it could have been written a lot better, but it's understandable from the view thata his wife is writing this book shortly after his tragic death. tracey wrote well, but got a little boring here and there. other than that, this was great. i never knew the story of payne and his career untill i read this. it was truley a proof to me that he was a great father, husband, golfer, friend, and man. enjoy it!

        Book Description

Among the provocative social phenomena of our time, few have caught the public fancy as profoundly as that quintessentially American species known as Bubba. The conventional notion of Bubba is a Southern redneck who thinks a rented movie and a six-pack are quality entertainment. According to Dan Jenkins, this historical view has been advanced largely by "effete Easterners and West Coast ponytails who claim to like trout pizza and fat novels written by some kind of Ecuadorian". Granted, says Jenkins, there is more than one Bubba from Georgia who has spray-painted his girl's name on an overpass. But there is also more than one Bubba from Chicago who will do his Christmas shopping at Graceland. Bubba, Jenkins concludes, is a state of mind, and he proceeds to let Bubba define himself by speaking on topics ranging from beer to ballet, from haircuts to the homeless.

Although food has been part of motion pictures since the silent era, for the most part food is treated with about as much respect as movie extras: It's always been there on the screen but seldom noticed. From the very beginning, the marginalization of food was based on practical reasons—the cost and the inconvenience of having to place food in exactly the same position in scenes that might require five, 10, or as many as 20 takes. To document how food has been used in movies from the silent era to the present, the authors reviewed over 500 American and foreign films and found that filmmakers had settled on three basic ways to treat food. First, food has been used as a prop and in these situations it's usually obscured by the camera or ignored by the actors who busy themselves with other things to help advance the plot. Second, food has been used as a transition device to compress time so that a meal that might ordinarily take a half hour to eat is completed in a matter of seconds through the use of creative editing techniques. Third, food has been used as a symbol or metaphor to make a dramatic point or to reveal an aspect of an actor's character, mood or thought process. The final chapter is dedicated exclusively to films released theatrically since the late 1980s—like Tampopo, Babette's Feasts and Like Water for Chocolate—that treat food as the star of the film, thus creating food films as a new genre. A filmography is included that lists the film's title, year of release, distributor, producer, director, screenwriter, cinematographer and cast, along with a brief description of how food was used in the film.

                                Book Description

If I am accomplishing my objectives...why am I not succeeding in my career?

Most people believe that if they just do an outstanding job they will impress their superiors and through osmosis they will enjoy a strong secure relationship. This kind of thinking becomes the root of the most devastating career letdowns.

Good work does not always equal a successful career. The reason? Some people have more power, influence, and accountability in the organization. The resulting hierarchical relationships can be more difficult to master than any other single component in one's career. Yet they are the key to creating professional success and happiness.

Don't Sabotage Your Success! focuses on how you can build professional intimacy, reveals why we don't build trust in our business affiliations, and suggests ways to begin securing critical relationships.

                                5 out of 5 stars For M L Berstein.......2005-09-21

Thank you for taking the time to share your candid thoughts on the book. I took great care in developing the concepts, teaching them to professionals for 3 years and soliciting their feedback, and then writing a book that reflected my personal experiences, research from many points of view, and those experiences of others who had been crushed by office politics. I have been lucky to fail, learn and succeed all in the same career. Success was something that came easily after I understood that it was a frame of mind vs. a thing to acquire. Success is the feeling that you know you are valued and supported by your organization. I'm sure there are short-cuts and tricks to get there but that is not what my message or my experience is about. At the end of the day we all want to feel accepted and connected. Connecting with people in our job is challenging and at times complex on many levels. Understanding the basis for positive, healthy connections is my message. As a business executive for one of the world's largest companies, I continue to be dedicated in my own career to helping men and women achieve that.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Waste Your Time with this one.......2005-06-04

"Success" is a fluffy concept. Whatever it is, the author doesn't attempt to define it. Her advice, to be "successful", you must be loyal and you must make the boss look good. There is little more substance than this. It appears to be a book format rehashing of the author's seminars. Worse, the message is contaminated by a disturbingly noticeable undercurrent of sexism throughout. The author clearly plies a "feminist" agenda. It is emblematic that all of the quotations placed at each chapter head are those attributed to women.

I rarely have become so annoyed by a writing to want to be rid of it. Because it is so disagreeable, I could not in good conscience even give it away to anyone. I have had to return it.

I recommend more worthwhile and substantive works such as "Crucial Conversations", "Crucial Confrontations", "What Your Boss Doesn't Tell You Until It's Too Late" and "Winning Office Politics".

4 out of 5 stars Great Book for Grads!.......2004-06-23

This book is a perfect gift for recent high school or college grads who are just entering into the workforce. Karen's personal experiences (failures and successes) serve as great examples for someone just starting out. I bought the book to address some problems that I've been having at work: I'm very bad at schmoozing. But after being in the workforce for 25 years, I've already made most of the mistakes that Karen made and learned the same lessons discussed in this book. I wish I had read it 20 years ago!

I cannot stress enough the importance of her chapter "Don't show loyalty only to yourself." While I was reading this book, I observed a full-blown case of self-serving, disloyal behavior that has caused recriminations and bad feelings throughout our department. My supervisor has been mentoring an Admin Assistant. She's been meeting with this person for personal coaching sessions, reading and critiquing this man's college papers, and writing letters of reference for scholarships and internships. After all her time and effort, this mentee (sp?) just announced that he's leaving to work for my supervisor's chief rival at another organization. Funny thing is, all the support staff saw through this guy and had him pegged as a user. My supervisor - in her zeal to prove what a progressive, positive, proactive person she is - was totally blindsided. Now, the remaining employees who have always been loyal to this woman (and, I must add, tried to warn her about this guy) are paying the price of her wrath for this one person's dishonesty and disloyalty. A lesson for managers as well as employees!

5 out of 5 stars Very good introduction to office politics.......2003-06-12

Ms. Wood puts many aspects of good office politics on the table. I saw quite a few of my past errors in her experiences and found quite a few of the mistakes I corrected there too.

One reviewer said to "not stop there"... of course not. Ms. Wood gives you a point of departure for building your own alliances at work. This isn't a cookbook, though there are suggestions for specific issues, but there is a general guideline for the "other side of the track" in work.

Being competent in your work skills isn't enough. You also have to be people competent too.

4 out of 5 stars This is but a piece of the puzzle........2003-01-19

Karen provides everyone who reads this book a great service by writing it. But, I can just imagine, now that she has taught a class based on this book for a couple years, she would write an even better book now. My fifth star for the rating is waiting for that.

Face it. Just about every facet of daily life is driven by Economics, Political Science, and Office Politics. If there is something I left out, I bet it can be related to one of those three things. Remember, All Politics are Local. Local to employers, local to co-workers, local to friends, acquaintances and family. One may already be the best Visionary, Task Organizing, Selling, Paper Pushing, Telephone Talking, Wrench Turning, Rivet Puncher there is. These days, it is not your Hard skill that gives you your job security, or assures your path to a successful future. Whoever called knowledge like this the "soft skills" was all wrong, and no, none of this is taught in school.

Imagine how competitive the workplace or corporate ladder would be if everyone was knowledgeably aware about the inner-workings of office politics? Luckily, most play blind. This information is telling of why those who rise are separated from those who don't, when all other things to consider are basically equal.

Read this and get a leg up, but don't stop here.
