5 out of 5 stars Classic L'Engle Always Delights.......2006-07-13

This is classic L'Engle, full of thoughtful observations and solid spiritual food. It's a good book for meditation and healing. And always L'Engle poses questions that give one pause.

4 out of 5 stars Christmas with Madeleine..........2005-02-08

I started this book on Christmas Eve...and who knew that this is almost precisely where L'Engle starts the book off at! It was a joyous, challenging, beautiful and often unnerving book that made me flip page-after-page in wonder and awe at the author's very wise words.

Sure, L'Engle sounds a bit like a Christian universalist in some of these pages, but they come from the heart and like all of our hearts, not every thought is theologically right on. So I can easily forgive her for this. For those people getting married, or thinking of getting married, or about to get married within the next 6 months, I'd recommend reading the first 60 pages of this book at least as it will fill you with wisdom, guidance and many wonderful descriptions of what true, ever-lasting love looks like.

Out of "A Circle of Quiet," "The Summer of the Great-Grandmother" and "The Irrational Season," this book comes in a close second out of the three. It's tender, warm, and just what I needed after the holiday season.

5 out of 5 stars For Doubters and Believers.......2000-07-09

To gain a sense of the various stages of L'Engle's life, read the Crosswicks Journals in order of publication. In The Irrational Season, Book 3, L'Engle does not give any easy spiritual answers, yet somehow a sense of comfort prevails throughout the pages. Never preachy, this is a book to savor again and again. We share L'Engle's struggle as she grapples with age-old questions. One is awed by the grace with which this woman deals with conflict, both internal and external, even as she is sharing her deepest doubts. As we read, we become a part of L'Engle's spiritual quest and we make it our own.

5 out of 5 stars Believable Answers To Life's Hard Questions.......1999-08-04

This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to reconcile their belief in God with their intellect. Lyrical and moving (I cried several times), The Irrational Season can be read on its own, or as part of the four-book series.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, spiritual book for people who think.......1999-05-18

I have been a fan of Madeleine L'Engle since I discovered A Wrinkle in Time in the 5th grade. As an adult, I have come to appreciate her non-fiction and adult novels. Irrational Season is probably the best of her non-fiction. The story follows the litergical year and in keeping with the seasons and holidays takes the reader through pain and joy while always maintaining hope. This is an excellent book for anyone who has sometimes felt overwhelmed and questioned their faith only to find that their questioning makes them stronger.

Well researched and well written, America's Women: 400 Years of Dolls, Drudges, Helpmates, and Heroines is a powerful and important book. Starting with Pocahontas and Eleanor Dare (the first female colonist), this lively and fascinating history records the changes in American women's lives and the transformations in American society from the 1580s through the 2000s.

A history of the oft-marginalized sex must often draw from diaries and journals, which were disproportionally written by whites; as a result, African-American and Native American women are not as well represented as white in the earlier chapters of America's Women. However, Gail Collins writes about women of many races and ethnicities, and in fact provides more information about Native Americans, African-Americans, and Chinese, Jewish, and Italian immigrants than some general U.S. history books. She writes about rich and poor, young and old, urban and rural, slave and slave-owner, athlete and aviatrix, president's wife and presidential candidate--and, of course, men and women. And some of these women--from the justly famous, like Clara Barton and Harriet Tubman, to the undeservedly obscure, like Elizabeth Eckford and Senator Margaret Chase Smith--will not only make any woman proud to be a woman, they will make any American proud to be American.

An editor at the New York Times, Gail Collins has also written Scorpion Tongues: Gossip, Celebrity, and American Politics and, with Dan Collins, The Millennium Book. --Cynthia Ward

                    Book Description

From the women peering worriedly over the side of the Mayflower to feminists having a grand old time protesting beauty pageants and bridal fairs, America's Women tells the story of how women shaped the nation and our vision of what it means to be female in America. Spanning wars, the pioneering days, the fight for suffrage, the Depression, the era of Rosie the Riveter, the civil rights movement, and the feminist rebellion of the 1970s, this book describes the way women's lives were altered by dress fashions, medical advances, rules of hygiene, social theories about sex and courtship, and the ever-changing attitudes toward education, work, and politics. While keeping her eye on the big picture, Gail Collins still notes that corsets and uncomfortable shoes mattered a lot too.

Ms. Collins takes you on a journey through 400 years of U.S. history as seen and experienced by women. It is a great review of our history as well as a perspective many neglect to include. This book is easily recommended to not only students of U.S. history, but to anyone who could use a refresher on some of the intricacies of our past. It was both captivating and intriguing.

                    5 out of 5 stars Couldn't Put It Down.......2006-07-19

I purchased this book in an act of desperation at an airport bookstore. It turned out to be a great read and one I would recommend to any of my friends or family members. While it can be frustrating to read about how women were treated, there are so many inspirational women in the book. It makes me so thankful for the life I have today. Plus, it read like a good novel - I didn't want it to end.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I found the chapters interesting, and the bibliography full of additional sources, if you wanted to follow up on a particular subject or person that the author covered. If you are at all interested in a women's role in American history, this is a good book to start with.

I really regret buying this book. It is real porly written and has hardly any chapters. The whole book contains four big pieces of text. It has not even been structured within the text it just moves on and on.
Even the topic of the book is of very little interest. There is a whole lot of weight on some statistical analys from his movies that is really bad.
I don't understand how the other reviewers can write such good stuff about this book.

The book is filled with great details, yet the author doesn't lose sight of the big picture. Enjoyable to read, with very good photos from the movies, SAM PECKINPAH'S FEATURE FILMS helped me admire and understand both the content of Peckinpah's movies and his directing technique.

                              Book Description

This book examines the intellectual history of instrumental music, in particular the idea of absolute music. It tries to show how certain ideas in philosophy, theology and the sciences affect the meaning and, indeed, the existence of instrumental music, and how, in turn, instrumental music is used to resolve or exemplify certain problems in modern culture. Instead of existing in a pure and autonomous form, music is woven back into the epistemological fabric and entangled with numerous discourses, thus demonstrating the centrality of music in the construction of meaning.

                              Download Description

This book is born out of two contradictions: first, it explores the making of meaning in a musical form that was made to lose its meaning at the turn of the nineteenth century; secondly, it is a history of a music that claims to have no history - absolute music. The book therefore writes against that notion of absolute music which tends to be the paradigm for most musicological and analytical studies. It is concerned not so much with what music is, but with why and how meaning is constructed in instrumental music and what structures of knowledge need to be in place for such meaning to exist. From the thought of Vincenzo Galilei to that of Theodore Adorno, Daniel Chua suggests that instrumental music has always been a critical and negative force in modernity, even with its nineteenth-century apotheosis as 'absolute music'.

                                Book Description

What was considered courteous table manner in Medieval England? Would children delight in playing hide-and-seek, follow-the-leader, and blind mans bluff? Harkening back to a time when men wore close-fitting bonnets tied under the chin and women adorned themselves with purses suspended from their belts with small daggers attached to the outside, Pleasures and Pastimes in Medieval England takes an enlightening look at how people from all classes of medieval society enjoyed themselves. Despite presumptions to the contrary, the daily life of men and women in late medieval England was not entirely one of toil. Author Compton Reeves presents a fascinating and highly readable survey of the entertainments and pursuits with which people of the time filled their leisure hours. From the rough and tumble activities of wrestling and jousting to the more sedate pastimes of chess and cards, from gardening to prostitution, and from cock-fighting to religious festivals Reeves describes with entertaining detail activities which remain popular today, though often in different guises. With its many beautifully reproduced illustrations, Pleasures and Pastimes in Medieval England offers a sumptuous overview of the delights of medieval life.

                                5 out of 5 stars Terrific overview.......2005-07-17

This book is a rare gem. If you're interested in medieval social history - specifically the history of leisure activities - this book is a wonderful reference.

While many medieval history books touch on the subject of leisure activities, this book gives the topic the focus it deserves. It's packed with information on a huge range of subjects - art, music, fashion, games, hunting, pets, diet, courteous behavior, prostitution, etc. - and the author nicely blends general discussion with specific, primary-source accounts.

Additionally, it's filled with photos of objets d'art, misericords, and manuscript illustrations...and contains a long list of sources for further research.

While not exhaustive, this book is an impressive, encyclopedic overview of a subject given short shrift in the majority of medieval history books.

3 out of 5 stars Nice survey, good for beginners, but lacks depth.......2001-05-08

This is a very accessible work on the "pleasures and pastimes" of medieval England. The author defines this term rather broadly, and includes not only such matters as games, hunts, drinking, poetry, pets, dancing, music, etc.-- but also clothes, architecture, and craftsmanshsip on the grounds that finely made clothes, armor, elaborate buildings, and well-crafted goods were a source of 'pleasure' to their owners and/or those who used them. Religion is also considered as a source of pleasure and pastime (pilgrimmages, feast days, etc.) The chapters are organized thematically, with one chapter on "literature", another on the plastic arts, another on "religion", etc. Each chapter is divided up into further thematic subsections (for example, breaking down crafts into goldsmithing, leather working, woodcarving, etc.) each of which is given a page or two.

Overall, the book's organization and function is that of a general survey. It provides only a cursory overview of a lot of different 'pleasures and pastimes' rather than an in-depth scholarly study that provides new knowledge or puts forth a new intepretation. These kinds of survey books have their uses, to be sure, but somehow, in reading this, I just I find myself feeling a bit like a rock being skipped over the surface of a deep pond. I guess I'd just liked the author to have gone a little bit deeper below the surface in some way. Perhaps he could have provided more concrete examples-- or even some counter examples. Perhaps he could have delved a bit more into how 'pleasures and pastimes' changed over time, or differed from region to region-- or maybe even among the different classes of society. Or perhaps he could have engaged a bit more with some of the historiographical contraversies surrounding this subject. Most of all, however, I wish the author had explored whether or not people in the Middle Ages had the same concepts of 'pleasure' and 'pastime' as we do or whether they viewed them in the same way, with the same set of values. (I suspect they probably did not.) All in all, I can't help but think that that there just isn't quite as much 'meat' to chew here as there ought to be.

                                5 out of 5 stars A Good Beginning.......2000-11-19

It's not often a student gets to review one of their teachers, but I get to do so with great delight. Pleasures and Pastimes is a wonderfully readable history of just what the later medieval English did for fun - and there's quite a bit.

If you're looking to do more indepth research on the subject, then this book may be a bit of a let-down. It is, however, a wonderful introduction to the topic, and a good starting point for those beginning to study medieval fun.

There's also a good bit of humor in the book, especially in some of the pictures' captions, including an illustration of a medieval beer bong! The book is a must have for those interested in English medieval history. (And no, I don't get extra credit for saying that!)

In the Second Edition of their popular text, Wayne Winston and Chris Albright continue to build on their highly successful approach of teaching by example while using spreadsheets to model a wide variety of business problems. The authors show the relevance of topics through numerous examples of real-world implementation of management science. The ideal solution for people who want to teach by example and who want to solve real problems with spreadsheets and professional spreadsheet add-ins, this text is always interesting, in part due to the useful cases added to this edition.

I was very happy with my purchase. The book was in perfect condition, shipped quickly, and cost much less than my university's bookstore.

1 out of 5 stars Do not use!.......2006-08-21

It is full of errors. The explanations are difficult to follow. There are few highlights in the text which makes scanning for a quick review impossible. There is no chapter summary. The book presumes a thourough knowledge of Excel which many students do not have. Stay away!

2 out of 5 stars Not as described.......2006-05-09

Previous reviews inspired me for the purchase. This book is NOT MBA material. I would rate it at Business 101 book. Most spreadsheet models are basically the same using the SOLVER function in excel. There are better tutorials online.

5 out of 5 stars Management Science made understandable.......2006-03-10

By incorporating Microsoft Excel spreadsheet examples of the problems, the authors have managed to make self-study management science possible. I'm absolutely convinced this is the best way to learn MS.
Anyone that has responsibility for making business decisions should keep a copy of this text nearby.

Used this book in B-school and loved modeling using @Risk (@Risk is the modelling software that comes with the book - pretty much self intuitive). My only complain with this book is that it was very focused on getting to the answer fast than really exaplaining the process and modeling techniques. After doing few examples you start to develop the intuition ... but I feel that the author could have done a better work in explaing the process behing modeling.
