Book Description

Jim Elliot was part of a team of young missionaries murdered in Ecuador in 1956 by the Auca Indians to whom they were witnessing. At the age of 29, he left behind a young widow, a baby daughter, and volumes of personal journals written over many years. In 1978, Revell published the complete and unabridged journals, edited by his widow, Elisabeth, and the journals have stayed in print ever since. And it's no wonder-Jim Elliot was an intelligent thinker and strong writer in these personal, yet universal, musings about faith, work, and love. The Journals of Jim Elliot is a wonderful account of the life of a man who yearns to know God's plan for his life, details his fascinating missions work, and loves Elisabeth-first as a single man, then as a happily married one. The Journals of Jim Elliot will intrigue fans of Jim and Elisabeth Elliot, readers interested in missions, and young people struggling to find God's plan for their lives.

5 out of 5 stars The Journals of Jim Elliot.......2007-04-15

I bought this book not for the theology, but for the practical struggles revealed in the day to day life of a man of God as he sought to live by faith and find that very special Will of God for his life beyond salvation, separation and surrender.

I would recommend this book for any saved person that wants to be encouraged to live daily in the will of God, for the Lord Jesus Christ, in a world that from a religious and secular stand point knows nothing of or very little about a real meaningful relationship with our risen Savior.

The journals of Jim Elliot demonstrate, that inspite of the real daily struggles we all face, it is possible to live by faith in His written word and not just on mere feelings that can change from day to day.

5 out of 5 stars Book has a little of everything.......2005-06-24

This is a very impressive book. It is the honest writings of a hero to many. In the book, you see that he was just like the rest of us and that he had a great passion for God. I certainly hope that more will read this book to get a glimpse of what a life turned on to God can do.

This book in many places is very good for personal devotions. There are also many sections that are great expositions of scripture. This book is biographical, devotional, and expository.

I'm a native missionary kid from India, and I would love to read this book. I searched and tried every possible way to get it in India, but couldn't. To buy online, the shipping charges are unaffordable for me. Do you know of any store that ships to India? I would deeply appreciate your help. Jim Elliot's life has been a challenge and example to me

4 out of 5 stars A different time - to our shame.......2002-11-21

"He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose."

And so was Jim Elliot, martyr at the hands of South American Indians who later gave their lives to Christ. In this, his autobiography via his journals, we see the life this young man led and the preordained road that led him to gain what he could not lose.

"The Journals of Jim Elliot" had a profound effect on me as a young man as I happened to be at a similar stage in life as Elliot during most of the pages. What I found on those pages - the lifeblood of a man fully sold out to God - changed my life.

A long book, "tJoJE" calls anyone who wants to know how to live a committed Christian life throughout the slow unfolding of Elliot's life. As an encouragement to young men, it is peerless. Its only detraction is due to the very nature of the autobiographical style as derived from journal entries. While you see God's hand moving in Elliot's life, sometimes the nature of the entries is lost, slow-moving, or repetitive. Such is the style of the book.

However, what I found most helpful in reading this book is the stark contrast between Christian practice of fifty-plus years ago and today. Elliot was distinctly a man of his time, but he was not alone in his complete surrender to God. He was surrounded by many people who were like him. How he lived, thought, and died seems foreign to today's Christians. In fact, he shares more with a Christian of two hundred years ago in David Brainerd than anyone you typically find in a pew today. His example is so profound that it is hard not to feel that something has changed in the last couple decades. Somewhere there are men like Jim Elliot today; I hope I can find them and learn from their examples, as well.

Anyone who stays with "The Journals of Jim Elliot" will find a great reward in its pages. It has always been one of my favorite Christian books. If you want a book that offers something different, it is a soul-stirring story made more compelling by its truthful historicity.

5 out of 5 stars Candid and encouraging.......2002-11-08

This is a really challenging and at times humorous read. I was encouraged to find that this man of God struggled with the very same things that I often find myself struggling with. It will challenge you to a greater thirst for God and it will make you laugh. Let another real life for Christ point you to Him!

    Book Description

When it Comes to Badness, There's Nothing New Under the Sun

In her best-selling book Bad Girls of the Bible, Liz Curtis Higgs breathed new life into ancient stories depicting eight of the most infamous women in scriptural history, from Jezebel to Delilah. Biblically sound and cutting-edge fresh, Bad Girls already has helped thousands of women experience God's grace anew by learning more about our nefarious sisters.

And there are more where they came from! With Really Bad Girls of the Bible, Liz reveals the power of God's sovereignty in the lives of other shady ladies we know by reputation but have rarely studied in depth: Bathsheba, the bathing beauty. Jael, the tent-peg-toting warrior princess. Herodias, the horrible beheader. Tamar, the widow and not-so-timid temptress. Athaliah, the deadly daughter of Jezebel. And three ancient women whose names we do not know but who have much to teach us: the ashamed Adulteress, the bewitching Medium of En Dor, and the desperate Bleeding Woman.

The eye-opening stories of these eight "Really Bad" women demonstrate one really life-changing concept: the sovereign power of God to rule our hearts and our lives with grace, compassion, and hope.

1 out of 5 stars So Very Disappointed.......2006-09-12

I had reservations about it when my small group decided to give this book a whirl, and although I was game and tried to like it, I just couldn't.

Liz's overfamiliar style, her judgemental tone, and pandering to churchy already-good-girls reads like a book that reinforces smugness among the churched.

I especially did not like the way she glossed over the difference in 21st Century standards for women, and instead just judged them against today's free-er women's options and opportunities.

I will say that we had many good conversations because we read the book, but in the end, we were all severely disappointed in the book itself.

Examples of what I mean: some of the "bad girl" scenarios seemed like she was stretching to fill pages, "bad for a good reason" - what?, or nattering on and on about David's sin with Bathsheba - wait, he's not a girl!

5 out of 5 stars Great for Bible study.......2006-03-08

Our church's women's ministry used this book for our Bible study and enjoyed it tremendously. I could relate to so many of the characters and was so horrified by some of the others! I enjoyed reading about the many relatively obscure Biblical women. We had several elderly ladies in our group who were surprised to read stories they'd never remembered reading before. I liked that Higgs focuses on Biblical women who were strong leaders, even if they were bad for a season.

We laughed, blushed, cried, and enjoyed every minute of discussing this book and how it related to our lives. Her message of grace for bad girls is one we all need to hear. I look forward to reading and sharing more of Higgs' books.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Kind of Bible Study, Different and Good.......2005-10-19

I have to say Liz Curtis Higgs sheds new light, at least for me, on a lot of those women in the Bible. You know, I've read about all these women in Ms. Curtis's book before, but somehow when I read my bible I missed a whole heck of a lot. I don't know how, because when I read this book I wanted to slap myself upside the head plenty of times. Duh, I'd mudder, how come I didn't see that? How come I didn't get it? Well I'm getting a lot of it now. As a Bible teacher, Ms. Curtis really excells and she makes it oh so interesting. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Really Bad Girls is a challenge to us to grapple with the gray moral areas we face as did our Biblical sisters.......2005-09-25

Our church has a Women's First Friday Bible Book Discussion Group and we've just finished "Bad Girls of the Bible" . Now we're beginning "Really Bad Girls of the Bible" and boy are we ready. Liz writes in truly personal way, with intense, genuine passion. Her discussion questions make fabulous jumping off points for our women's group. Fantastic author, FABULOUS book!

5 out of 5 stars Liz Outdoes Herself!.......2005-02-11

I got this book after having read the first one. I really enjoyed the first book, but Liz really outdoes herself with #2. When the title says, "Really Bad," she is not kidding. There are several stories that I had read several times in the Bible and not grasped the severity of them until having read Liz's modern day version. Yet there are some characteristic traits in these women that can be found in every one of us. A must read!

        2 out of 5 stars A book for noobs........2007-09-05

This book was alright but comes off to be very lazy. There is basically 0nly a place for cords, no picking tabs, and there was also a typo on one of the songs. If you're a beginner this could give you a good concept of what to play to get the general sound of the featured radiohead songs... but if you are intermediate or advanced with your guitar skills I would recommend steering clear of this unofficial book. Street spirit didn't even have tabs and for the most part the cords seemed incorrect. There are no strumming patters written out with the music either. So yeah... I was not very impressed by this particular book. If you want to play Radiohead songs I would recommend any of their official song books.

2 out of 5 stars Not quite what I expected........2004-02-21

The book has several innacuracies in the chords, and I am not generally pleased with the setup on the music. The chords are presented at the beginning and then are called out by letter name. There are also several typos and other errors, it was cheap so I do not regret the expense, but I would not recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Fun and Instructive.......2006-02-09

I like this book. I'm not done with it yet because it's huge and with tactics books I like to flip around a lot. It has the major tactical themes that can come up in your chess games, combined with a little bio of the great players whose tactics they illustrate. They make the book fun because they set the stage for each tactic with dramatic/colorful dialogue, and then ask you to step into the footsteps of the legends of the game and find the solution. The book also provides little tidbits of information like why the opponent's move was good or bad during a particular game and little idiosyncracies about the game and/or players. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars was because sometimes they put the solutions in a non-user friendly place so it sometimes became a laborious chore to find the answers. Overall, an entertaining and educational chess book.

          1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2003-12-07

The bird's eye view of this book was very promising, but beyond the initial 15 minutes of enchantment in the bookstore, this book turned out to be very disappointing. I exchanged it a day later for Lev Albert's "Chess Tactics for the Tournament Player."

I have just begun playing in a club against real people and am looking to elevate my game but am ranked around 1450-1500 on yahoo (probably less in "real life") The first book I read, Purdy's "Guide to Good Chess" contained a good overview of tactics, introducing concepts such as Pin, Fork, Skewer, Discovered Attack, etc. which I have been using in my games.

Looking at the table of contents, this book looks to be a treasure trove of tactics, at 400+ pages and introducing such tactics as the "windmill" and "alkeins cross", looks very promising.

The reader quickly realizes that each of these tactics is just an "extension" or sub-class of the primary tactics in everyone's vocabulary. The windmill is just a succession of discovered attacks (usually the result of a blunder.) wow.

I was hoping that the book would be instructive on tactics, but the examples only help to define this new vocabulary by showing the last few moves of some master's game where he used the tactic to good effect. In fact that is all this book is. For each tactic, it shows a few moves from a master's game where the tactic was used. Well duh, I have used them in my own games. At least now I know cool sub-names for them. I wonder if schiller invented these names?

I believe it would be much more instructive to view the series of moves leading up to the illustrated tactics, because being able to identify and set up the situation is much more useful than seeing the trap that is about to be sprung. I recently purchased a chess program (fritz 8) that has a database of games which can be sorted by tactic. So you can view entire master games based around use of a particular tactic. Why spend $25 on a book that is just selective regurgitation of master level games (with very little annotation), when for $10 more you can have a world-class chess engine with a database that sorts entire games by tactic? Maybe I'm missing the point.

The book does have a nice cover and a promising title. I have appreciated some of the Cardoza books written by Robertie including "Basic Endgame Strategy, Kings Pawns, and minor pieces", but this book does not have the same instructive feel. I am not biased against non-mainstream books or Schiller, its just that this book does not seem useful.

I appreciate that it is difficult to make a career out of playing chess, but dont write a book when there is nothing new to say.

1 out of 5 stars SAVE YOUR MONEY.......2003-10-31

While I would not say outright that "almost anything written by Eric Schiller is rubbish," that statement is probably much closer to the truth than its opposite. Those I have seen are so sloppy that they almost seem to be deliberately mutilated. Missing moves, illegal moves, faulty diagrams, invalid assessments, suspect analysis, and ignorance of recent (or even old) ideas and discoveries, are all too frequent. Grammatically, Schiller fails in such simple tasks as subject-verb agreement and spelling of common words; apparently he does not even bother to use the automatic spell-check today's word processors offer. His work is thick with historical error and dogged by questions of fabrication, plagiarism, and other ethical issues.

Schiller may have written some worthwhile books, but on the whole he does a disservice to the chess public, keeping better books off the shelves by the sheer volume of his hackwork. Being a club level player I rely on the reviews of others I trust when I purchase a chess book. The lure of a quick buck is strong and I fear it is a temptation Mr. Schiller cannot resist.

          1 out of 5 stars CAVEAT EMPTOR!!!.......2002-12-18

Raymond Keene stopped writing original books on chess as long ago as ARON NIMZOVICH: A REAPPRAISAL (1975); ... AND the book sorely needs basic editing which was omitted in the haste of making it. Ask any chess master about this book, if you don't believe me! Get yourself a good book on tactics like the Reinfeld 1001 series instead. (I am a USCF 1800 OTB player.) My rating for this book? ZERO STARS. Save your money.

3 out of 5 stars interesting examples - sloppy editing.......2002-07-29

This is a typical Eric Schiller book. It contains many interesting examples from the world of chess. First are some examples of the different tactical motifs (pins, skewers, etc) from the games of world champions. I found these examples to be interesting, although several I have seen before in other books. As a class C (USCF rating 1472) tournament chess player the examples were fun, but not overly challenging, which is sort of what I was looking for. Following the examples are some games from the world champions and some puzzles. Again most of these examples are interesting.

The main problem that I have with this and most of Eric Schiller's books are the sloppy editing. There is an error on almost every other page of the book that one does not have to look hard to find. For example on page 30 there is a game where the opening is identified as the "Kings gambit declined". The game starts 1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4. Now I know that I am not "the world's leading writer on chess openings" like Eric Schiller, but I am pretty sure that this is the Kings Gambit ACCEPTED (not declined). This may seem trivial, but almost every page has such errors that a 1400 level proofreader would have been able to catch.

Other errors include having the exact same example of a smothered mate on page 19 and 42 (an example of mindless cutting and pasting). Another is that the numbers are backwards on the diagrams on page 40 and 41 (a1 is labeled as a8). This can make it confusing to the reader. I also did not like how the author gives the full names of World Champions, but not their opponents (ie Garry Kasparov vs Korchnoi). This seems a little insulting to me.

Overall a fun book, but needs some serious editing and proofreading. Eric Schiller needs to focus less on quantity and more on quality.

5 out of 5 stars Finally: Tactics Actually Made Fun and Interesting!.......2000-07-08

Are you tired of diagram after diagram of endless tactics in those ordinary tactics books? I sure was. This book makes tactics fun because it shows you how the greats actually used them to win their games. Schiller shows the purity of Capablanca's tactics and the cunning of Kasparov's from some of their best games. Instead of pages upon pages of X-rays, you get Bobby Fischer defeating Bisguier with an X-ray in the World Championship. You might not remember puzzle number 601, but you'll remember that game. I love the anecdotes, the biographies of the world's best players and the quizzes which kept me honest.

            Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars try selling used books on Amazon.......2007-07-08

Some of the ideas mentioned seem like more work than a traditionl job and some are too artsy craftsy for me, but women today do have more options than ever before. With the introduction of the internet, we are no longer doomed to sell vitamins to friends, dream about life on top of a pyramid, or set up childcare services in our home, if we're already stretched too thin with our own motherly duties. I wrote a book about selling books n Amazon: 'The Stay-at-Home Moms Secret Guide,' because it is one of the lowest risk, lowest investment, profitble ideas that I have come across. Who would have thought it possible to tap into the biggest book bazaar in the world, reaching across the globe, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, from your own home. Sorry to take this opportunity to plug my own idea, but, if you want a real opportunity to make extra-cash (I make $4,000 a month working part-time), I think I've found one of the best ideas available. Scouting for used books is fun! But, if selling used books isn't for you, you might find somethig in Priscilla Huff's book. Just don't give up. I tried a few other options before finding one that really brought in the money I need--there's something out there that's rght for you too.

            5 out of 5 stars Home Business.......2007-02-06

Lots of great information in this book. If you are interested in starting a home business this book really helps you put things together.

4 out of 5 stars A Good First Step .......2006-12-12

I conduct workshops based on my book "Capitalizing On Being Woman Owned" and in almost every class 30% of the attendees are in the first stages of starting a business or even just thinking about it. This book would be a good exploratory resource for them. Ms. Huff provides practical information for many micro-businesses. Part of the book is a "how-to" with explanations for making critical decisions. It is a great first exposure to starting a business and provides resources that will give the details. It's probably not for the woman who wants to build an international corporation. But it is for the woman who wants to start a small business that suits her personality and situation.

            3 out of 5 stars Not a book for the 21st century.......2006-05-08

I think that Ms Huff should rethink her strategies here.
This book is okay but does not really deal with the realities of the 21st century.
If you're looking for a book that faces the realities and challenges of today then you should read Untapped Wealth Discovered by Jeff Marquis and Kerry Harrison. This book shows you how to find those businesses that can survive and prosper in our economy. It's a book that pays special attentions to the needs and goals of women.

2 out of 5 stars Great Career Change or Second Income Home Business Ideas.......2006-03-21

You may want a home business for a second income, or maybe a whole career change - there are thousands of options for earning a living now. I started homebusinessadvisers.com in 2004, and this is a book I read in preparation. It was useful for an over 40 woman like me. There is so much info around, it's hard to filter through it. In the end my own website has become a place to review the latest home based business ideas. Thanks to Priscilla for the initial ideas.
