The books in the Swan series are taken from a conference for pastors, where Dr. Piper presents these biographies. The biographies are never meant to be exhaustic treatment, but tailored to encourage pastors.
I find these brief biographies to be so wonderful and often whet the appetite for more. One can only be encourage and motivated to do more for the Lord, having bathed the soul in these well-written, tailored sketches.
Outstanding book, outstanding series!.......2007-04-05
Incredible. This is the first book of a series of four that Piper wrote to expose this generation to some of the great saints of the past. I started by reading book three, moved to book four, just completed the first and am looking forward to diving into the second book to finish the series. This book was very powerful, enlightening and challenging. As a Reformed believer, I've grown up with a tremendous appreciation of Luther and Calvin, but knew little about the incredible influence of Augustine. As I've matured in my walk and the more I read, the more I see the fruits of Augustine's thoughts in the works of so many great thinkers and writers that followed. Piper's expose on Augustine gave me an even greater appreciation for God's sovereign grace in the life of Augustine and for how God used him like the source lake from which mighty rivers of knowledge and grace have flowed down throughout history.
I think what I enjoyed most about the book is the concept that the central theme that connected these three men was their love for God's Word - they digested it daily, they wrestled with it, they sought to squeeze out every truth that could be known about God Himself from His divine and inspired Word. Their lives were devoted to the study of Scripture and to the accurate and passionate teaching of God's Word to the people. While each lived in tumultuous times, it was amazing to read about how diligent they were with their time and how much they accomplished without any of the modern conveniences that we enjoy today.
I would highly recommend this book and the entire series to all followers of Christ to gain an even greater appreciation for God and how He has used ordinary men throughout history to accomplish extraordinary things. The books are easy to read and relatively short, but are packed with great encouragement for every believer.

The Legacy of Sovereign Joy is Book One of John Piper's series The Swans are Not Silent. Each book of the series (of which there is currently four) collects three of the biographical lectures Piper gave at the annual Bethlehem Conference for Pastors over the past two decades. When Augustine resigned as Bishop of Hippo it was said that the "swan is silent." Piper aims to show that the swans, those in our heritage of Christians throughout the centuries, are in fact not silent.
This book expounds on the lives and thoughts of Augustine, Martin Luther, and John Calvin. It begins with an introduction about "savoring the sovereignty of grace in the lives of flawed saints." Piper explains that each of these men "had this in common: they experienced, and built their lives and ministries on, the reality of God's omnipotent grace." (18) Noting some of the flaws of each of these men, Piper believes that "the glory of God, however dimly, is mirrored in the flawed lives of his faithful servants." (37)
Each chapter is about half biography and half theological survey and averages 34 pages. There is a pattern to each chapter: after a brief introduction John Piper provides a biographical sketch and then brings out a prominent theme from author's theology. For Augustine, the theme is sovereign joy, for Luther it is sacred study, and for Calvin it is the divine majesty of the Word.
After these chapters, Piper concludes with four lessons we can learn from the "flawed saints." "1) Do not be paralyzed by your weaknesses and flaws... 2) In the battle against sin and surrender, learn the secret of sovereign joy... 3) Supernatural change comes from seeing Christ in his sacred Word... 4) Therefore, let us exult the exposition of the truth of the Gospel and herald the glory of Christ for the joy of all peoples." (143-148)
It is evident throughout the book that John Piper has done his homework; quoting often from primary texts and secondary sources. While there may be some over simplification in regard to the theological themes, Piper's points are nonetheless insightful and practical. Each chapter serves as a great introduction to the lives and thoughts of these Christian men. The Legacy of Sovereign Joy provides a stimulating resource for those looking to discover some of the motivating themes of the Reformed tradition.
Concise but comprehensive.......2005-09-15
Concise but comprehensive might sound like a contradiction but I couldn't think of any other way to describe it. John Piper really introduced me to Jonathan Edwards, and between the two of them I would say that no other author has had as much of an impact upon me in the last few years as these two. Now Piper introduces us to Augustine, Luther, and Calvin also. This is the first book in a series of three and well worth the investment. I read it in my spare time in just 1 week, have the second book ready to go, but regret not purchasing the third at the same time. Piper's strength is not only in presenting one very compelling argument about the triumph of God's grace (or "Sovereign Joy"), but to do it by presenting numerous facets of the work of Augustine, Luther, and Calvin, which are easy to follow and understand, gives an excellent overview of their lives and ministries, and which leaves you wanting to (and feeling confident of being able to) read from the original sources. Every page was a gem. Be warned though, I got about 10 pages into the book then realised my mistake ... I should have read this book with a pencil and note pad in hand! There are so many great quotes from Augustine, Luther, and Calvin, not to mention Piper himself that you'll want to write some of them down to chew over later (or file away for sermon illustrations). This is an easy read and a great introduction the some major figures in church history, not to mention excellent food for the soul. In a day when people are so biblically illiterate as well as ignorant (or contemptible) of church history, this book demonstrates that our impoverishment is foolish and unnecessary. We need more books like this! I would have given it 6 stars if I could, simply on price, readability, and content alone.
Inspiration for New Christian Leaders.......2005-04-16
As you can see by the book's subtitle, this little book has three biographical pieces on well known historical Christians. Though most Christians know the names of these men, few know any more than that. So this book serves as a useful introduction to their lives and work.
But this book offers more that just a general introduction. These essays were originally conference talks given by the author to an audience of pastors. So there is a specific theme and purpose to them beyond summary historical information. Lessons from the lives of these men are drawn out to inspire and equip a new generation of Christian leaders.
I was personally most inspired by the chapter on Martin Luther. I was greatly convicted to be more diligent in the study of God's word. But all three essays were interesting and provoked personal reflection.

The villagers try to pacify each side, and many are destroyed by both. Hayslip tells her family's story- they alternatively first for and are attacked by the Viet Cong, depending on the changes in the wind.
Quote: "The least you did- the least any of us did- was our duty. For that we must be proud."
I liked this book very much. Although I sometimes found it difficult to keep abreast of the movements back and forth in time, it generally fit together fairly well. Hayslip does not blame either side for the war- in fact, she is attempting to make both sides understand one another better- despite the fact that she suffered brutally from both. Instead, she tells her story to share the futility of war to get the average person what they really want in life: family around them, lasting love, watching children grow old- peace.

A Survivor's Message.......2000-04-28
Le Ly Hayslip's novel gave a new insight into the Vietnam War that many Americans are reluctant to look at. Because the war was fought on the soil of her homeland, it not only took away her brothers and father, but unthread the basic foundation of her life. Le Ly was forced into the war because of her residence not political affiliations. Le Ly is a strong woman forced into a difficult situation and survives with a message for the world. It is definately worth hearing.

A True Account of the War, July 1, 2001.......2001-07-02
I found this book engrossing and hard to put down! It is so beautifully written. Le Ly has a poetic way of expressing her deep feelings and emotions. How a cruel tortureous childhood could have produced a woman with such an overflowing capacity to forgive and inspire others is simply inexplicable! In her small village of Ky La, Le Ly is recruited as a child spy and sabotour for the Viet Cong. Because of this tragic situation, Le Ly had suffered imprisonment, torture, rape, and the death of many cherished family members all before the tender age of 16! This devastating fact of war, became the reality of many young women living in Ky La. Possibly the most astounding fact of all, is Le Ly's undying faith in humanity. Even after all the hurt and anguish the war had caused her, Le Ly freely forgave her persecutors and even appreciates them for "without them i could not have discovered myself or the mission of my life". As well as telling the unforgettable story of her harsh childhood, Le Ly also writes of her reunion with her beloved family.
A book for those who want a true account of the war.......2001-06-28
As a 14 year old young lady, i found this book remarkably touching. It gave me a truer understanding of what life during the vietnam war was really like. Hayslip shows how forgivness has delivered her from an excruciatingly brutal past! She actually honors and appeciates her persecutors,as well as others whom she came across during her years in vietnam, for they have shaped her road to self-discovery. This rare attitude has inspired her as well as many others, including me. During her stirring testimony, Hayslip becomes a 12 year old recruited spy and saboteur for the Viet Cong. Because of her position, before the age of 16, Hayslip suffers imprisonment, torture, and rape. Her family gradually slips away and, at times, leaves her to fend for herself in the filthy streets of Siagon.Hayslip has poetically recounted her journey to self-discovery and forgivness. I would recommend this book to anyone who doesn't truely grasp how bad and degrading a war can be for a young woman and to those who have had difficult childhoods. Hayslip illustrates how it is possible to overcome and benefit from past experiences!This is definitly a must-read!

Completely out of date and unnecessary... .......2006-09-13
Okay, I have not even read this book, so everyone stop right there, before you give me an unhelpful vote. Please listen up. I just might save you some cash.
The X Rated movie industry is one of the most fickle, quickly out of date industry there is. I think the Videogames market might have a slight lead in this characteristic, but that's for you to decide.
I couldn't believe when I saw this book, as well as 2 others listed at Amazon. With the internet now, and instant updating, any listing which claims to be current, after 6 months or a year, is just a big sham! I promise there could be no useful information in a book like this, over 1 year old. There really can't.
A good friend of mine, Bobby Asslong, one time sent a prank joke to me through the mail. He had pasted together several X Rated ads, from various magazines, and claimed it was an application to apply to be an X Rated Movie reviewer. I took one look at the shoddy attempt at an advertising brochure, and laughed! It was in black and white, for one, and secondly, it listed a bunch of movies I recognized to be older than 1 year old. I knew it was a sham, since the Porn industry is so fast moving, and anything older than 6 months, is considered so yesterday. Why would they need to hire somebody to review porns? Don't they have enough volunteers?
I'm still friends with Mr. Asslong, and he continues to deny his little prank, but I know the truth. And similarly, because I"m an expert on the porn industry, I know that this type of book is a big waste of money.

A waste of money........1997-12-30
There is very little useful information in this book jam-packed with data. It includes highly debatable physical descriptions of the actors, their aliases, and the names and dates of their films. No plot summaries, no descriptions of their abilities or proclivities, or the relative quality of the films. There isn't even any cross-reference to find out if the actor or actress appeared with another particular actor/actress. Lame.

Attention Bass Players! Buy this book! Excellent!.......2006-05-09
If you play bass, this is the best book I have seen for learning chords. The book is 250 pages of chords, for every key, from major and minor, flats, augmented, diminished, suspended, 6ths, 7ths, 9ths, 13ths, etc.,and this excellent compendium includes 5 exampled tab and scale positions for each chord, in tab and scale, and each page includes a riff using that respective chord. This book is the ultimate private tutor for bass players, new, intermediate, and the most advanced. Perhaps the only drawback is that the book should be available in a spiral-bound edition for the music stand. I strongly recommend this classic with Chord Progressions for Songwriters by Richard J. Scott. They play together like they were made for each other! This is a HIGHSIERRABASSPLAYER MUST BUY!

Some fascinating species.......2007-06-12
A few of the species-the basically human An-Phar, the Kronin (space samauris) and Gorm (space orcs) are a little dull, silly, derivative or both. Many-the hive mind Mmmmm, the hostile Crystal Computers, the corrupt and ageless Engai, the energy-vampire Glow-worms and the slow-living stones Liook manage to be realistic and interesting. Most of the species fit in well to any SF campaign from Star Trek to Traveller to space 1889. Some even fit pretty well into fantasy campaigns.

GURPS Aliens is, as it says on the cover, "A collection of non-human races for Science Fiction roleplaying".
There are only 28 different races here, but each has full statistics for GURPS roleplaying campaigns. These statistics give enough information for GM's to give life to totally alien races, some of which the players are bound to have never seen or met before.
From the rather friendly and pig-like "An-Phar", and the benevolent super-powerful "Auroras", to the energy draining "Gloworms", and very versatile "Xenomorphs", GURPS Aliens gives two or three pages for each alien race, each page packed with info like their psychology, their ecology, their culture, their politics, and some ideas for adventure seeds with each race.
The book also has a short section at the beginning that has some small details on Alien campaigns, and creating alien races that are not in the book. This section allows GM's to create new alien races that no one has ever met before. There are even suggestions for creating races that will not overpower your campaign.
GM's unfamiliar with GURPS will find it easy to convert the stats for the alien races to other systems. Conversion to "D20", for instance is almost on a one-to-one basis. GM's running GURPS: Space or other GURPS based campaigns may find the races in this book to be a good addition to their adventures.
A great addition to a GURPS library, a fantastic addition to a GURPS "Traveller" campaign, and a good addition to any SF gamemaster's references. Although out-of-print and sadly in need of modernization and updating, I'd still recommend this book to all spacefaring GM's.
This is my favorite GURPS supplement.......2000-02-12
I am a role-playing enthusiast, and play all sorts of game systems. Of the many RPG accessories and books I have seen, GURPS Aliens ranks in the top three of hundreds.
The alien races described are mostly NEW, yet at the same time fresh and original. A lot of thought went into creating original races that will fit in well to a wide variety of science fiction adventures.
In addition to a number of interesting PC races there are also quite a few races well-suited as opponents or NPCs. My personal favorite is the race of intelligent chlorine-breathing radioactive octopi that are taking over the galaxy, one business at a time, in a series of leveraged hostile buyouts.
Another race, the Verms, bear a striking resemblence to the acid-blooded Aliens of Sigourney Weaver fame. Even here, though, the Verms are different enough that they are interesting.
I give this book my highest rating.

Probably the best GURPS supplement I have ever seen........1999-04-15
This book contains all that you need to create ANYTHING you want in GURPS, be it flesh-eating, fire-breathing avacadoes, or happy little squirrels. This book was one of the better purchases I have made recently, and the best ever for GURPS.

1. First look for stocks with a Price/Earning or Price/Book less than 80% of all stocks.
2. These stocks must outperform the indexes
3. Make sure the company has good management and solid plans and strategies for growth
4. Focus on stocks with above market returns (7%). The stocks market returns must exceed the cost of money and inflation.
5. Invest and hold
6. Act like a business owner of the stock and now a momentum trader
7. The top money managers with 20 year records are value guys. Take for example, American Express, this stock compound 22%, for 10 years.
David Dreman
1. Buy low Price/Book, Low Price/Earnings, low Price/Cash flow stocks.
2. Contrarian investing has out performed markets spanning 50 years and the S&P for the last 10 years.
3. Buy good blue-chip stocks, which, on the whole, are growth stocks with 10-15 % growth.
4. Seek a solid balance sheet and above average dividends
5. Volatility is helpful. Contrarians are looking for top-performing stocks that have been knocked down. They love bear markets. Bear markets represent bargins, too buy cheap, wait until the market recognizes the value, and sell when price changes and other factors combine to suggest a sell. Bear markets allow the contrarian to purchase 10,20, 30 percent growers at a cheap price.

1. Emerging franchises are younger companies and represent good potential for growth and emergence into saturated markets.
2. Establish a target price based on 12 to 18 month interval. Note that an analyst has 1/14 billion chance predicting price within 5%.
3. As a stock reaches its 12 to 18 month target price; we look to see what has changed.
4. One of the biggest mistakes is to sell emerging franchises to early.
5. The sale of really great companies can lead to lost opportunities.

1. I'm particularly interested in how the company is getting to profitability
a. By examining trends in sales and administrative expenses
b. We want to see how the ratios stack up against the competition
2. To determine normalized earnings, we predict what sales should be, and then put a margin that the company has been able to generate over time on those sales.
a. Historically, 8 times Peak earnings to get Price
3. If the current earning estimate is higher than normalized earnings, we are not interested.
a. The best companies grow between 8-15%
b. The return on capital that exceeds the cost of capital
c. Sell a stock when the story turns out wrong or when you find something better.

1. Buy companies that can be easily understood.
2. When buying a stock, look at what might go wrong. Weight out the risks.
3. Sell when the price goes up or the value goes down.
4. Hold as long as the stock has value, the company is growing, and operations are good
5. Measure the value in ratio to the cash flow
6. Buy a stock that over the next 5 years will outperform the market
7. The market between 2000-2010 prediction is that it will experience a 10% return.
8. Growth investors do well, they do well because the companies they bought grew faster and longer than the market believed. The value investor bought when the company was undervalued; undervaluation was caused when the market becoming pessimestic about a negative event, as a result the market overreacted and panic sold; the value buyers realizing the overreaction and the value of these companies bought cheap; the market realized their mistake and began to buying up the valueable stock, raising the price, and the value buyers recognized overvaluation and sold for a 20-30% profit.
9. The problem for a value investor is finding stocks that look statistically expensive, but are cheap.
10. Management activity is important; the business value and management ability to execute a profit plan. Management must play the confidence game and create the perception they can provide value.

1. P/E of 17 is the mean (Boggle would agree)
2. 4.5 is the normal interest rate (this was a revelation)
3. A value oriented P/E should be no more than 2.5 multipled by the growth rate
4. Find a value stock means going to the value line
a. It must have a good return on equity (14%+)
b. Fairly priced
c. P/E value must below the ROE
d. If the company is good and no management changes and the price suddenly drops then buy more and leverage profits on the return to fair price.
Interesting History but Too Lightweight for Investing.......2006-11-10
If you're looking for deep investing insights from the masters, this is the wrong book. The author seems to have missed a golden opportunity to ask good fundamental questions and then pursue them more deeply.
If you're looking for short biographies of famous investors, coupled with a high level discussion of investing philosophy this is the right book.
Very different and very usefull book........2006-10-28
As someone who has had poor results with momentum trading for several years, I have been searching for a new approach that will work better. I read The Intellegent Investor and have since been studying value investing in several books. I have to say that Kazanjiun's book was a very helpful orientation from some of the "Masters" that has deepened my desire to understand value investing better. I think it was interesting that I got more out of the Dreman interview in this book than I did out of Dreman's own too-long book. I recommend this "orientation" to anyone who wants to examine the broad strokes of value investing in one place.
Major disappointment.......2004-04-04
I'm not sure I found one worthwhile idea in this book.
Only Book of Its Kind.......2004-04-03
This is really a one of a kind book. Full of advice from the best value investors in the world. I learned so much about stock analysis and valuation from these gurus. The author does an excellent job of getting them to open up and explain their process in a way that can be understood by all. Truly an excellent piece of work.
