Book Description

In all its glittering splendor and decadence, here is the uncensored story of a family bred for glory, and destined for tragedy.

The jewel in the crown of Europe's lush Cote D'Azur, the fiercely independent principality of Monaco gleams like a diamond above the Mediterranean. This playground of the rich and beautiful reached its zenith with Prince Rainier, Princess Grace, and their three children-- until Grace's tragic death in 1982. As the myth began to crumble, scandal rocked Monaco in every way, from its institutions to its image to the royal family itself. Now, through searching interviews with family members, personal friends, and long-time courtiers, the intimate, shocking truths about Monaco are explored in vivid detail, including:

* The ancient Curse of the Grimaldis and its legacy of misfortune
* The never-before-told story of Princess Grace's abortion before she married Prince Rainier
* New details about Princess Grace on the night before she died, and her death in a Monaco hospital
* The alleged secret plot to destroy Princess Stephanie's marriage
* The appalling rumors about the death of Stefano Casiraghi, Princess Caroline's second husband
* The wild love life of Prince Albert and the rumors that haunt him

With eight pages of dramatic photos!

2 out of 5 stars Comme ci, comme ca.......2005-02-01

This is a very interesting book to read, what with the glitz and the glitter that the author presents.
However, the historical accuracy is slipshod at best. There are a lot of lies published in this book that the author tries to pass off as true fact. He gets many dates and names mixed up as well.

I'd like this book better if there was at least some research put into it.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good and fair-minded biography.......2004-11-08

While some "revelations" in this book should probably be taken with a grain of salt, overall, this is better than many Grimaldi biographies in that it is neither a hagiography nor a hatchet job. Glatt doesn't portray, say, Princess Grace as a saint, nor does he portray, say, Princess Stephanie as a monster. Glatt, though he clearly feels a measure of annoyance, even disgust, for some of the antics of the Grimaldi family, he also has compassion for them. For instance, when recounting one of the most salacious scandals to plague the family -- the videotape and photographs which showed Stephanie's husband making love to a Belgian stripper -- Glatt clearly feels bad for Stephanie (despite her appalling lack of judgement in latching on to the creep in the first place); she had really loved him and was genuinely hurt and humiliated by his betrayal.

Glatt also thankfully clears up allegations about Grace having a drinking problem -- allegations that surrounded her toward the end of her life because of her visible weight gain, and which another biographer, James Spada, dug up in the late 80s. Grace was, in fact, a moderate drinker, because she suffered terrible hangovers if she had more than a glass or two of champagne.

Though Prince Albert has managed to steer clear of the tabloid cover stories that followed his sisters around (due, no doubt, to Grace instructing him on how to be discreet about his love affairs, an education which she never gave to either of her daughters), he too has had his share of troubles. Glatt even makes a half-convincing case for one of the more outlandish assertions: that Albert fathered a love child who is a dead ringer for Princess Grace.

So all in all, a good, juicy read about fascinating and flawed people.

4 out of 5 stars "Royals" without the lies.......2001-10-20

John Glatt pens a more truthful version of "The Royals," with less favoritism and more fact. Admittedly this isn't the British royal family (who have provided us with entertainment for many years) but a lesser-known (and no less juicy) dynasty, the Grimaldi's of Monaco.

Monaco first came to attention when Prince Rainier married the film star Grace Kelly, who brought glamor and modernity to the teeny little country. Grace's past -- involving multiple love affairs -- was swept out of sight as she ascended to the glamorous -- and severely stress-inducing -- position of princess, wife and mother. Rarely happy in her long and paparazzi-studded marriage, she nevertheless gave it her darndest and died tragically and suddenly when she was starting to find fulfillment again.

The book shifts focus after Grace's death in a car accident, to her three *ahem* spirited children: Caroline, who married one playboy after another, got pregnant out of wedlock, and once burst out of her top at a club, then had to shift into the social position that her mother left vacant. Albert, a playboy himself, who played around with one woman after another but wouldn't make even a vestige of commitment--even to one ex-girlfriend who had his baby, Tamara Rotolo. Stephanie, who shocked Monaco with her wild antics, drug use, explicit singing career and wild modelling career, bodyguard live-in boyfriend, and humiliating divorce after marrying said boyfriend.

Sound like a tabloid? Well, that's a royal family for you. Fortunately, Glatt doesn't speculate on the inner thoughts of the Grimaldi family (said to be under a curse from a witch raped by a Grimaldi) but allows their actions to speak alone. His writing style is pleasant to read, and gives us insights that other biographers apparently didn't get. I especially enjoyed the interviews with Cassini (Grace's ex-fiancee) Robyns who wrote a steamy biography but edited it at Grace's request, excerpts from members of the Grimaldi family, and from people who knew/know them.

This is hardly flawless. He describes Grace as a devout/militant Catholic, yet chronicles love affairs (with men married and single), an abortion, astrology beliefs, etc. Sorry, these are not the actions of a "militant" Catholic, though admittedly it is possible that she confessed these to a priest (something we will never know). He does occasionally linger on stuff that is more than we want to know, but it does give us a good look at the Grimaldis.

Stephanie, Caroline and Albert have already been in the spotlight, tabloidwise, so I suppose Glatt felt that there was no real reason to sugarcoat things. Rainier gets away the easiest, for though he was unfaithful to Grace during their marriage, very little space is given to it (as compared to Albert's girlfriends, Stephanie's partying days, etc).

In recent years the Grimaldis seem to have calmed down, but this book is nevertheless a heckuva read. If you liked the Royals but didn't like the made-up parts, try this book on for size.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad, as far as it goes.......2000-10-26

Make no mistake, this is a book by a journalist, not a historian, and it reads that way. If that's what you're looking for going in, this will most likely satisfy your curiosity.

Although the subtitle mentions the Grimaldi 'dynasty,' 70 percent or so of the book is about the, um, 'complex' personal lives of Princesses Caroline and Stephanie and Prince Albert, the three children of Rainier and Grace. There's little effort to put the dynasty or the principality in more than the immediate historical context, and although Rainier is frequently described as an absolute monarch or even 'Europe's last dictator' (which isn't even true), matters of state take a distinct back seat to the 'glamour, tragedy, and scandal.'

This is too bad. One of the most interesting assertions in the whole book was a comment from one of Glatt's sources to the effect that the Grimaldis were not becoming tawdry, but rather had always BEEN tawdry, and had hidden that fact behind a false front of elegance while Princess Grace was alive. I don't know if that's true or not: Glatt unfortunately lets the statement pass almost unanalyzed.

Glatt is to be commended, at least, for the variety of his sources, including several who (at least according to Glatt himself) had never spoken on the record before. While the book frequently reads like an extended essay in People magazine, Glatt avoids the temptation of acting omniscient about his subjects' thoughts and motivations. When they act inexplicably (which is disturbingly often), he says so. Glatt's tone is respectful and polite, but he didn't pull his punches. As someone who only paid cursory attention to the Grimaldis, I think I have a better understanding (and a lower opinion) of them as a result of this book.

A worthwhile read, all in all, for monarchy fans whose interests lie more in the personal than the political, the contemporary rather than the historical.

5 out of 5 stars Couldn't put it down.......2000-02-25

For those who feel the Brits have the dysfunctional royal family from hell, this book about the Grimaldis of Monaco will be an eye-opener. It covers Grace's marriage to Rainier--an unhappy sham of a marriage contrived to boost Monaco's economy, ending with Grace's tragic death due to a stroke while driving. Roughly half of the book covers the three troubled children, Caroline, Albert, and Stephanie, who are, to put it politely, a handful. We follow the two daughters through their teenage rebellions, out-of-wedlock pregnancies, troubled marriages, and (in Stephanie's case) drug problem; one cannot help but sympathize with their troubled parents and the heartbreak they've experienced watching their daughters destroy their lives. The sole son, Albert, is the most responsible of the three siblings, but even he is still 'sowing wild oats' at an age when he should be thinking about creating an heir to the throne. It's a gossipy sort of book--not an academic tome--but readers with some familiarity with Princess Grace will be fascinated.

    Book Description

Dean Ottati is an Everyman in this modern fast-paced world: trying to balance career, marriage, family, and personal happiness. He's a young corporate executive who seeks real meaning in his life, beyond the hardball negotiations that make up his long workday. He feels that capitalism and competition have made us all poorer-slaves of the clock, pursuing the illusory and the empty.

To find the substance of life, he runs. He runs on trails and roads and beaches, every day, alone or with friends, constantly challenging himself physically and intellectually. During these runs he re-evaluates his relationship to work, his use of time, his marriage, his bond with his young son. He peels back the layers of hardness from his heart. He finds a new balance in the forces of family, work, love, solitude, money, and time.

His conversations with running "mystics, sages, and philosophers" each become a chapter. The run along the beach with the friend who counsels him on marriage: "Would you rather be right or would you rather be happy?" The glorious muddy run in the rain with Marc, who declares, "Each wet sock is a stinking foot soldier in the war against postmodernism!" The run with Big Jack, a senior executive of his company, who teaches him, "Before you speak, examine your intentions. If you can do that you'll come to meet yourself, and it will transform you." The run with the friend who tells him "The famine of time in our lives is really a famine of meaning." And this leads to the philosopher who advises "that merely by pondering the question of meaning in our lives, we begin to find meaning." Dean Ottati's quest take him on a fascinating path toward a common-sense, workable enlightenment. And he teaches us to find our own path.

Dean Ottati lives in Walnut Creek, California.

    5 out of 5 stars A.......2003-07-18

Issues in the business world and how running helped him deal with those issues were very well articulated.

4 out of 5 stars It's Not About the Running Shoes.......2003-07-16

"What would I do if I knew I only had one day left to live?" writes Dean Ottati in a key passage of this book (p. 223). The answer he says, is that he would start by going out to run. "During that run, I would smell each smell, the roses and the horse droppings, with equal joy. I would listen to the leaves rustling in the trees, and I would watch the red-winged blackbirds against bright yellow mustard flower . . . . I would run up the Mauler [hill] one last time. And I would thank it for remaining such a consistent challenge over the years."

Those sentiments are the core of this book. It's not about running, it's about being a runner. The distinction is critical. I am a runner and author of running books. Ottati is a runner and has written a book that tells of how running has helped to shape his life. It's a good book: in places a great one. There are insights here about the importance of various aspects of our lives: hill running, career, family, corporate negotiations. I fluctuate between a four-star and five-star review, but some of the corporate lessons seem a bit obvious. But maybe that's just me...I abandoned that career path decades ago-about the time that I myself took up running, and my interest in corporate America is inherently limited.

Highly recommended to anyone struggling to make sense of their priorities.

Especially if you also happen to be a runner.

4 out of 5 stars Zen and the Art of Running.......2003-06-26

The promo says it's in the spirit of Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance - and it is. Ottati wrote a thoughtful and inspiring book for all runners, as well as thinkers who want to be runners (or vice versa). Of course, if you are both a thinking and a runner, it's perfect and easy to get into.

Like Zen and the Art of MM, the running is the backstory. Ottati's philosophizing is pretty basic, but it's refreshing and very relevant to today's post 9/11, post high-tech crash world.

And... Mahler sounds like a good run.

3 out of 5 stars Not really a running book.......2003-04-12

I have to admit that I'm only halfway through this book, but honestly I have put it aside for a while. Dean's book is good, but know that it's closer to a business or personal improvement book than a running book. If that is what you are looking for, this is a good one. But Dean is definitely not the next Sheehan, and his topics and style are completely different. A good book, but know what you are really getting.

5 out of 5 stars I want to run with Dean and so will you!.......2002-06-11

I really enjoyed and highly recommend The Runner and the Path. Ottati takes the reader on a wonderful journey. Whether it's facing down real coyotes on the running trails of Mt. Diablo or facing off against paper coyotes on the paths of corporate America - Dean covers nearly all the difficult facets of balancing one's life in today's America.

The focus of The Runner and the Path is Dean and his fascinating network of running partners who provide and provoke Dean's insights into the spiritual struggles of living in Post-modern America. From his faithful dog Izzy to the inscrutable Closet Magician - Dean has run with them all. And from the first chapter on, you will want to run with them too!

Dean's writing style is easy going and mature. He had me involved in serious introspection one minute and then laughing and grinning the next with his often Twain-like wry anecdotes.

The Runner and the Path has much to offer for both runner and non-runner alike. Having spent the past fourteen years in corporate America, I very much appreciated Dean's insights into the challenges of managing one's values against the frequent corporate pressures for results at almost any cost.

The old Bulldog of Britain, Winston Churchill (who probably did not do much running in his life) once said:

"Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them
pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing happened."

We should all thank Dean for not running off --- but running and writing instead!

I certainly recommend this book and eagerly look forward to Ottati's next work.

      Book Description

Fortysomething and still single, music-video exec Pia Jamison has given up her grandiose ideas on men and marriage but not motherhood. Her biological clock is on red alert, but after years of self-imposed celibacy she has no clue how to attract the man she needs to get the baby she wants. Help comes in the form of Pia’s savvy assistant, who tricks her boss into attending, under the guise of a business conference, a flirting workshop called Weapons of Mass Seduction. There Pia meets other women looking to amp up their amorous arsenals, including the devastated Texas belle Florence Chase, who’s trying to save her failing marriage; and Rebecca Vossel, a twenty-two-year-old small-town biracial girl who’s dying to release her inner diva.

What they learn about the art of sensuality and flirtation turns them into bona fide bombshells. The three return home, armed and deliciously dangerous, to spectacular results. Florence reunites with her husband, but the new and improved Flo must now determine if she’s staying in her marriage out of happiness or habit. The plain Jane Rebecca has transformed herself into the super-sexed “Becca,” but will she realize when she’s gone to far? And Pia is happily pregnant but unexpectedly falls in love—not with the father of her unborn child but with a sexy and very conservative candidate for the U.S. Senate.

Weapons of Mass Seduction is a fun and sexy book (think of it as a flirting workshop within a novel) that promises to unleash the sensual woman in you!

Pia Jamison is a music video executive who is in her 40s and is still single. Pia has given up on the idea of marriage but her biological clock is loudly ticking. Since her self-imposed celibacy, Pia is out of practice when trying to attract a man so her assistant tricks her into attending a flirting workshop called Weapons of Mass Seduction. At the workshop, Pia meets two other women named Florence and Rebecca. Florence is a Texas southern belle that is desperately trying to save her marriage. Rebecca is a small town girl who is trying to become the seductive diva that she always wanted to be. The three women go back home to practice what they've learned. Flo reunites with her husband but she's now uncertain if she wants to stay in her stagnant marriage. Rebecca now has become confident and sexy "Becca" but is she going too far? Pia gets pregnant and falls in love but it's not with her baby's father. What will become of these three women?

Weapons of Mass Seduction is an informative, delightful novel by Lori Bryant-Woolridge. Woolridge expertly created a perfect mix of an engaging storyline and a sensuality manual rolled into one. Pia, Flo, and Becca all come from different backgrounds but all of them are longing to become enticing, sensual women. These characters represent what a lot of women are going through on a daily basis. Readers will find that the tips that these women learn through the workshop can be applied to their own lives. Woolridge even includes Weapons of Mass Seduction self tests in the back of the book to see how seductive you are. This story has a healthy dose of humor and emotionally intense scenes that will stick with you long after you finished the last page. Weapons of Mass Seduction is a fun read that should be enjoyed by all women.

Fortysomething Pia Jamison has the booming career every woman wants. She is finacially stable, and now her biological clock is ticking loudly. There's just one problem, she's vowed celibacy and is not romantically involved with anyone. Her relationship problems land her at a flity workshp called "Weapons of Mass Seduction" where she meets two other women who are also trying to find their flirtatious selves as well.

I was excited about the topic of the book. I first flipped to the back and was intrigued by the quizzes to see if I was a WMS! I thought that the book was well written. There was a lull in the middle of the book where I struggled to keep my attention focused on reading, but towards the end, the pace picked up and the book finished well. I did find myself wanting to have more insight on Becca and Flo. It seemed as I read the back that I would know more about them, then I was only introduced to them at the WMS workshop and through glimpses afterwards in the storyline. I think the author missed out on an opportunity to really explode with making Becca and Flo have more of their own storyline.

I would recommend this book for your reading pleasure! And make sure to take the test to find out if you are a WMS!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reading for a Variety of Reasons.......2007-09-03

Our book club has read all of Lori Bryant-Woolridge's books and have enjoyed all of them. This was book was no different and in fact was a probably her best for a couple of reasons. First, as others have pointed out, the self help aspect of the book is insightful and helpful and it was fun to receive that kind of information in the format presented. Our group spent a lot of time talking about how the workshop in the book really made us look at our own ideas about our own sensuality.

But Lori's strength is really in her storytelling and she again did a great job of weaving together a great bunch of characters with interesting lives. In all of her books you really grow attached to the characters and care about what happens to them. She's also really good at creating love relationships that romance your heart and head. There are characters in this book for everyone to love. Pia and Valen's relationship was my favorite but I definitely related to the young Becca, whose ideas and mistakes I myself made in my younger days and Florence and Dan's marriage is one I've lived and know others who still do.

Do yourself a favor and treat yourself to the work of this fine author. What you find between the covers of her novels are far richer and more satisfying then you would ever believe. Ms. Woolridge has definitely become one of my favorite authors and I look forward to her next work.

Systematic overview, not like many other texts, that are written around curious case studies or around classical rhetorics. Gives perspectives of many aspects (incl. myth-building, martyrdom etc) from point of view of different social sciences paradigmas. Why only 4 stars? In some places (examples) author lacks awareness of actual historic events. Say - is himself seduced by propaganda.

5 out of 5 stars excellent for all players who want to learn this awesome defence.......2005-12-27

i recieved this book for christmas and read it all day and i am now already using the dragon on the internet as black all the time. This book is excellent it explains everything you need to know to be able to win with the dragon. Another grreat eric schiller book. I highly reccommend it to anybody.

5 out of 5 stars Understand your moves!.......2005-04-25

Too many players go through the opening simply by memorizing several moves without understanding why those moves are meaningful.
This is an excellent book for understanding the ideas behind one of the most complex and entertaining opening lines available to today's tournament player: you'll not find lengthy (and boring) variations to study and repeat from memory in your games but you'll learn which are the plans that come with the Dragon variation. This is surely the best first step any player should take when learning this (or any other) opening line. Once you know how the opening works, then you'll be able to move to an advanced Dragon book filled up with lines and use it for further study and reference (and then you'll be able to see those lines in a new light and really understand them!).

3 out of 5 stars List of tactical tricks for speed chess..........2005-01-25

I bought this book because of one of my constant opponents played the Dragon exclusively (only recently he began to increase his repetoire with Najdorf and other Sicilian.) Overall he got a plus score on me. I also read some games of Fischer beating the Dragon (I feel good), then Sierawan poked fun of the Dragon (feel better), and Karpov killed Korchnoi's Dragon (feel the best). Then Kasparov is successful with the Dragon. Now I have mixed feelings about the Dragon (together with bad experience in the Dragon, I lost many games with either color!!!). I hoped to find a book to improve my score, And this book is not a long term work. It could provide a list of plans to use when you play white or black, but not deep analysis, only good for quick fix when playing speed chess. Buy book from GM writers is better choice, they have their record to back it up. 7.50 USD is OK for this book.

          2 out of 5 stars Don't waste your Money.......2003-03-27

The Dragon is a excellent counterattacking opening for Black to include in his/her repertoire. However, by focusing EXCLUSIVELY on thematic elements of the Dragon and not including any theory, this book will leave Black players at a disadvantage against opponents who know their opening theory. I strongly recommend Winning with the Sicilian Dragon 2 by Chris Ward because it includes a nice mix of thematic elements along with the theory that is necessary to know when one is playing the Dragon. All in all, a good general overview, but a waste of money.

          4 out of 5 stars A positional approach to a tactical opening.......2000-11-01

The Sicilian in general (and the Dragon in particular), is known as a sharp tactical opening. So along comes a book which attempts to teach you the general ideas that seem to occur again and again. Instead of endless waves of mind-numbing brilliant tactical moves, the authors present a list of ten concepts that Black should keep in mind throughout the game. I still remember how my eyes lit up during an OTB game when I realized I could sacrifice the exchange on c3 (idea #3).

The authors are clearly pro-Dragon, but they do make the effort to present the themes that White should pursue. There is a second list of nine themes for White, one of which (attacking the King along the h-file) has changed the way I approach going after the castled King.

Be sure to note that this book, in keeping with its "idea" approach, does not attempt to analyze lots of lines. It presents the concepts and expects you to try them out over the board.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Project Management .......2007-02-28

This book turned out to be something other than what I first expected, as I was anticipating another "time management" book. Though there are elements of time management here, what this book really offers is a sound approach to managing projects. Such clusters of multi-step tasks comprise so much of our lives at work and at home. Whether you are converting your office software over to Windows Vista or aiming to lower your golf handicap by 10 strokes, you are dealing with projects.

At times the authors lay it on a bit heavy about the Franklin Quest (now Franklin Covey) approach, but that is a minor quibble.

If you want to learn the sound "blocking and tackling" fundamentals of prohect management, invest time reading this practical book!

4 out of 5 stars A great book for helping you get organized!.......2002-01-07

If you are like me, reading a book on how to organize yourself is nearly as hard as doing the organization itself! This book really helped simplify the process with clear, common-sensical advice and an approach that was EASY! As one of the co-authors was formerly as disorganized as I was and used the methods to organize herself, (and documented the process in the book!) it made it 'real' for me in a way that I hadn't seen in other books on getting it together. This book is a keeper, and I continuously refer to it to help me keep myself on-track!

5 out of 5 stars Creatively Finish what Matters Most!.......2001-09-10

This book helped me reidentifying my values, rearranging them, and make them work. It helped me start doing and effectively finishing what matters most in personal and professional lifes.
I'm paciently waiting for Lynne Snead next book about project management.

4 out of 5 stars This is how you do it all.......2001-05-17

This is an excellent, down to earth manual on getting things done and deciding exactly what it is you want to do.

It deals with specific skills and resources as well as "big picture" concerns.

This is "why, what, when and how to" training. Worth your investment in it.
