A "Sleeper"........2007-05-10
There are some great lessons on leadership and character in this book. Landry's strong faith and belief system helped shape the morality of many that came in contact with him. His vision on life is based on a high value system. He is a perfectionist and a great strategist who believes that preparation is always the key, which I also agree. After reading this book you will walk away with a new layer of tenacity, an increased will to be challenged, and a new resolution to embrace patience more.
About More than Just Football.......2006-11-03
America is a sports-crazy nation. Tom Landry's career is worth reading about because it parallels the rise of professional football in the U.S. His rise from the tiny town of Mission, Texas to building a football dynasty is inspirational because through years of losing he had the determination and faith to stick with his plan for winning. A major factor in this was his faith.
Landry's narrative is also intertwined with larger historical events. His older brother Robert died during WWII when the B-17 bomber he was in disappeared over the Atlantic en route to England. At age 18, the younger Landry enlisted and eventually flew 30 B-17 missions over Europe. Another aspect of history--after President Kennedy's assassination in Dallas, the Cowboys were booed at every game they played for the rest of the season, and into the next.
There are some great lessons on leadership in the last chapter that are applicable in any context.
For all he did, Landry certainly didn't deserve the kind of dismissal he got at the end of his career.

Having been a lifelong Cowboys fan I saw this book and had to read it. The first thing I found upon reading it was that total honesty of Coach Landry and the guts it took to wither all the storms life can throw at one person. I found that, even though it deals worth football, there are lessons that are applicable to everyday life. This would be a great book for all school children to be assigned to read. It shows what can happen when one person puts faith and families and principles ahead of instant gradification.

I bought this book for three compelling reasons. First, I am a long-time Dallas Cowboys fan. Secondly, I always admired and looked up to Tom Landry as a leader and a devoted Christian gentleman. Lastly, I love to collect and use quotes. I loved reading this book for one simple reason - it exceeded all expectations for all my reasons for buying it.
I cried the day Tom Landry died, and again the day after his death when I read articles and listened to television stories about the life and times of Tom Landry. This simple, little book brought back many of those same emotions. This book is not one author's lofty opinions about a man. It is a collection of quotes, stories, and vignettes from scores of people from all walks of life who are united in their deep love and respect for a man among men, a man of unquestioned character and integrity.
You do not have to be a Dallas Cowboys fan, nor know a thing about Tom Landry, nor do you need to collect quotes to enjoy and be motivated by this book. If you are inspired by reading true accounts of moral, spiritual, and successful leaders, then this book will exceed all your expectations, too.

It's nice to know what outsiders thought of Landry, but it's nicest to hear from insiders who knew the man. This book fills that need. It's classy, readable, beautifully organized and highly affordable and should be on every Cowboy (or Cowboy hater's) bookshelf.
Book of Landry great tribute to late coach.......2000-04-15
Jennifer Briggs' "The Book of Landry" is an excellent tribute to the late Cowboy's coach, Tom Landry. I grew up in Wisconsin, where Landry and the Cowboys were "the enemy." This book gave me a whole new view of a man who is revered in Texas. He was a compassionate, principled, fun-loving and God-led man, a true hero. I keep re-reading chapter after chapter for inspiration! It's a great birthday or Father's Day gift!

Bayless doesn't pull any punches and looks like he has several axes to grind. A must read for any die-hard old school Cowboys fan.
Very Fair Description Of Greatness, And Then The Fall.......2005-05-19
Tom Landry became a captive of his own image. In this book veteran sports writer Skip Bayless pulls back the curtain and shows how a decent man, and Christian, had 20 straight winning seasons as a coach in the NFL, while remaining cold and emotionally distant from his players, and then watched his team decline as the NFL changed while he refused to.
A Dallas fan since 1981, this reviewer was there for the Dallas fall from grace. He saw the decline, and could not account for it. This book answered many of the questions he had as to why Landry was still trying to run an offense and defense perfected in the 1960's in the 1980's; why Landry was never seen scouting players in the off-season; why did so many players and even coaches under Landry seem to have so many issues with him once they left the team.
An eye-opening book that shows how a humble Christian man from Mission, Texas, became for 20 years the winningest coach in NFL history........and then fell into the trap of trying to live up to his own imagae and tried to hang on too long as the league changed around him.
Discover the truth about Tom Landry's firing by Jerry Jones. Did Jones fly personally to meet with Landry on a golf course to rub his face in the fact that he was being fired? The Man with the Funny Hat.......2002-01-31
I've read a few books on the 'Cowboys of Old' and I ahve noticed a trend. They all portray Tom Landry, as a man, in the brightest light possible--as he should be. But as a coach, it is revealed that he was "all business", which is probably true. I used to be a cowboys fan, and unfortunately the truth of those cowboys come to life, and the heroes of a 6-year old cowboy fan put a stain on what once was "America's Team". I'm not discrediting the author, I'm sure they're true, but if you were/are a cowboys fan, this book may be a little too truthful for you. I have since lost respect for some of those players, and I am glad I was ignorant as a 6-year old to the behind-the-scenes goings-on because if I had known then what I know now, I would have rooted differently.
You are better off SKIPPING Bayless.......2000-10-16
Bayless was run out of Dallas not because he wrote 3 negative books on the Cowboys. Out of season, and even during the glory years, most die hard Cowboy fans are intellectually honest enough to know that things have always been bumpy. But Bayless seeks to do a hatchet job on Tom Landry right from the start. Landry is portrayed by Bayless as a hypocrite because he professes to be a Christian but runs a coaches a professional football team by cutting players and motivating by fear of being cut. Huh? Basically a hypocrite for doing his job and doing it well.
Most of Bayless' key sources in this book are disgruntled Landry haters. Bayless became friends with Paul Hackett and didn't like the way Hackett was treated by the Cowboys. Never mind that Hackett couldn't adjust his offensive thinking for quarterbacks without strong intelligence (like Danny White) and who has proven that he is nothing but a run-of-the-mill college coach. Ironically, many of those so-called haters were present at Landry's funeral earlier this year and I began to wonder whether they really said what Bayless quoted them as saying.
Perhaps there are things in this book that are relevent to any Cowboys discussion, but the timing of the book was odd. It was written in 1989, the low point of the franchise. Had it been written in, say, 1980 (after many of the events portrayed here), Bayless might have some credibility. In fact, he has none.

Not what I was looking for.......2005-09-11
This book told a lot about the background and philosophy, but didn't offer a lot of instruction. It was also hard to read and understand.
A good introduction........2002-12-11
I really liked this book. I know it was not as deep in technique and theory as many would have liked, but for the price it is a great introduction. I would like to see a more in-depth version, akin to Jun Fan/Jeet Kune Do the text book, or something as nice as either of the new Gracie Books. I am still waiting for the Filipino book that gives real grasp to the newbie, but still has a lot for the experienced player. In short I am looking for some thing with the thought and grace of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Theory and PRactice, or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Self-Defense, or maybe a book as comprehensive in its coverage as is Simco's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: The Master Text.
Never the less it is still good to see old Giron, moving around and swinging a stick.

A fine book to support escrima-students.......2001-01-20
I`ve bougth this book in order to support my own escrima training. As a rookie in escrima, it gives you the basic understandings in the escrima-fighting art of Grand Master Leo Giron. I think it`s not written with the intention to replace training under a qualified teacher. In my view it supports your training as a beginner in the art. What's more, it gives you a good overview including the origins. Escrima has to be practised to be learned.

This book is bad for beginner and practically useless for a master. There is no comprehensive description of training complexes, footwork drills and other important details, which were completely omitted. It gives just an overview of the system in general, so the reader can have some vague feeling of what Giron escrima is.
A excellent overview of the Giron system of Escrima.......1998-06-18
This book provides the reader with a very good taste of Grandmaster Giron's system of self-defense. It is particularily strong in the largo-mano or long range area, with clearly photographed techniques using sticks, knives and empty hands. In addition to the techniques, he puts his system into an ethical framework. The only part I would have liked to see more of was the excellent empty hands techniques present in the Filipino martial arts, including guntings and limb destructions. Nonetheless, this will make an excellent addition to anybody's library with interest in the subject matter.

Reminders and wholesome advice.......2001-07-21
Essential Managers books can be overly simple and a bit stiff. Yet, most of the books take a considered, reasonable approach to management topics that I find refreshing. I appreciate the old-fashioned but extremely common-sense approach Heller and Hindle take in this particular book, which doesn't pander to the now-common "throw it into the team and let them hash it out" approach to getting the job done.
How to delegate is a must to have on your shelf when you must confront serious basic problems focusing your direct reports on the work at hand. Though I would not use the actual delegation form suggested in this book, the concept has proved useful over and over again.
Like all of the Essential Manager books, Dorling Kindersley provides a wonderful, simple user interface, with great formating and lots of charts, diagrams, suggested forms, etc. I advise you to get it, read it, and keep it where you can see it when you start to pull your hair out.

If you want information on advanced delegation then this isnt it. However if you are seeking information that will take you through the basics of delegation then this might be a good place to start. This tape set introduces you to the very basics of delegation in a step by step process allowing you to gain an understanding of what delegation means. I wouldnt recommend this to a Fortune 500 Compant Director but in general it makes a great start up compliment for the newly appointed manager...

Great for labor history, maybe practical for today.......2005-12-14
I'm writing about the "3rd Printing," or Third Edition of this hardcover book, Are Unions Necessary: Labor's $50,000 Golden Book. The cover and title page lists the author as Irving Auerbach, but the copyright page says Irving and Myrtle Auerbach.
The book lists several chapters on its jacket front:
* A Simple Explanation of the "Right To Work" Law
* How to be a successful shop steward
* Time and motion study and job evaluation
* How to organize the unorganized on the job
* 81 American billion dollar companies
* Taft-Hartley inequities
* Company unions
* Gouging doctors
* Stock market suckers

There are a lot of details of employee tactics and union counter-tactics of the period. For example, time and motion studies done in the late morning provide different results than those right after lunch. Which should be used for employee evaluation? That's just one of hundreds of points of contention.

A management classic. I got this at a public library a year or so ago, and subsequently bought my own copy. Should be "required listening" for any first-time supervisor. The tape moves quickly and hits the fundamentals of delegation, motivation and follow-up. Highly recommended!
