The Woman Has A Gift!.......2004-03-28
Though I am a huge fan of Leslie Esdaile; I was initially hesitant to read this book. I am pretty sensitive about the Sept. 11 disaster and just couldn't imagine that anyone could write a novel especially a romance that included this subject; without it somehow being a disservice to those who were victimized that day.
Well my caution was unnecessary. Ms. Esdaile skillfully handles 9/11 with both sensitivity & intelligence; as well as delivering on an incredibly romantic story.
I've already read it twice!
Don't miss this one...
Live for Today.......2003-05-08
In Tomorrow's Promise by Leslie Esdaile, love must overcome many obstacles to flourish between this hero and heroine.
Tina Johnston is a newly promoted Lieutenant Colonel in the JAG Corps. She is taking a much needed vacation to visit her brother, Wendell, and his family in China. Little does she know, that her sister-in-law, Carol, has more on the itinerary than just sightseeing. Enter Mark Hicks, a recently retired Military Intelligence Officer and Wendell's best friend and business partner. Tina and Mark are thrown together in what Carol has already decided is a "love match". After spending a great deal of time together touring different cities in China, they begin to believe in the love match as well, until a tragedy hits stateside. Both are thrust back into the military careers in which they are trained. This causes a rift in their personal relationship. Can they put aside their differences and fear to recapture the magic they shared overseas?
Esdaile brought to life the landmarks and culture of China. It was the perfect backdrop to the romance of Tina and Mark. Once the main characters were back in the states, they reverted back into military personnel. Being a military wife, I was able to relate to the commitment and dedication they displayed to their country.
I would recommend this book to fans of romance and I look forward to the next novel in the Heroes and Heroines series.

Promise Me.......2002-11-15
Simply put, Tomorrow's Promise is a graceful and captivating love story of Tina Johnston and Mark Hicks. Tina is a military attorney who specializes in International Law; Mark is a newly retired military intelligence officer. On vacation in Shanghai, China to visit her brother and his family, Tina meets her brother's best friend and business partner, Mark, who is also there on vacation. In love with their careers, Tina and Mark are headstrong and live by the phrase that "tomorrow is never promised"; they have goals to achieve and romance and emotional attachments only complicate matters.
Leslie Esdaile provides an alluring imagery of several cities in China, utilizing metaphors and similes to brilliantly display the cultural heritage of China and its modern day people. She skillfully reverts back to the states with the same effective techniques in describing Philadelphia and its inner city, middle class African-Americans. The traditions of both cultures are laid before our eyes with a realism you can see.
One of the most powerful strategies used to entice the reader is the inclusion of the national disaster of September 11 into the story line. This event provided strong dialogue between the characters that you could feel and see through words. The reader receives another perspective of the tragedy through the eyes of our military personnel.
This is an excellent character driven novel that will stir the depths of your soul. I applaud Leslie Esdaile for taking me on vacation. Romance readers will absolutely enjoy Tomorrow's Promise.

Promises for a Lifetime!!!!!.......2002-10-24
This book was too deep. Leslie managed with great skill to weave a beautiful and meaningful love story through a real life tradegy that has this country still experiencing aftershocks. LTC Tina Johnston is a career officer and the first African American woman to hold her rank and position in the JAG corp. Dedication to duty and her country has left little to no time to dedicate to herself and at 38yrs her personal life has not bloomed as gloriously as her military career.
Tina is in China visiting her brother Wendell who lives in Shanghai with his ultra modern, business savvy, and very down to earth ("ninja warrior") wife Carol and their two kids. Tina isn't prepared when she meets the 6'6, dark, handsome, too fyne business partner of Wendell's and the recently retired MI Army Colonel Mark Hicks isn't expecting to be so totally devastated when he finally meets the women who is his former mentors baby sister. They click and it's on.
Like most of Leslie's books she lets you get to know the characters, she lets you into who they are and where they come from. Mark and Tina are two halfs of a whole, they both love family, and country and it's the love of country that propells Mark into action when he and Tina's plane is forced down in Canada after receiving the news that rocked the nation and has it scrambling to recoup.
Being retired military I especially appreciated the sincerity of this story in a series that is set to promote and feature through the characters the real life heroes of 9/11 with a portion of the book sales going the the Silver Shield foundation. I always love Ms Esdaile abiltiy to create a bond with her secondary characters that make them just as important as the hero and heroine. Keep on writing Leslie and we will keep on reading. This book is a must read.

Romance & Patriotism.......2007-07-14
"An exclusive collection featuring three women in different branches of the military fighting for their country and a chance for love.~~~~~~~Driven by commitment, these women venture far beyond the call of duty to make America proud amidst the turmoil facing our nation after September 11th.~~~~~~~Their courage and endless effort to love and honor will leave memories etched on our heart forever."~~~~~~I found this anthology to be a great tribute to our service men and women, who dedicate their very lives for our nation and its people. "Life Goes On" by Giselle Carmichael was a interesting read that touched on the changes that 9-11 brought about in our airline security. The tale was about Jaclyn a divorced mother of two teenage boys, who was in the army and was personally selected to help start an automated web-based personnel and recruitment system that would better track employees and could be used as a recruitment tool for hiring new employees. Tony, was the head of the program and he and Jaclyn had an instant attraction, although they both tried to fight it, especially Jaclyn. However, attraction wins out and after Jaclyn could have almost lost Tony to a terrorist she readily admits her love for him and the rest is happily ever after.~~~~~~"Treasured Dreams" by Wanda Y. Thomas, was a tear-jerker, more patriotic than romantic, it really brought back sad reminders of 9-11 and the characters had to deal with more tradgedies from the 9-11 fallout in this tale. Gregory was instantly attracted to Victoria. However, Victoria who was definitely attracted to Greg physically, was not so taken with him after he put his foot in his mouth with a comment regarding military women. Greg with the aid of Vicky's sister was determined to win her over and planned a series of romantic interludes, all while he was trying to take down several terrorist cells. Vicky tried to move slowly, but in the end she decided that life was to short and tomorrow was promised to them, so she finally, willingly submitted to her growing feelings for Greg.~~~~~~~Barbara Keaton's "Wishing For Tomorrow", definitely my favorite of the three. She spun a sweet, romantic, yet patriotic tale of two service persons, who thought they would never find anyone to accept them because of their careers in the service, which were extremely dangerous and highly confidential. Yet, Michelle and Vincent, finally realize that they have a lot in common and they connected intellectually, mentally, emotionally and finally physically with each other. They finally accept that fate has thrown them back together and that "love knows no bounds and no time frame". They discover their love for each other, all while on assignment to take down a dangerous "double agent" and return a loaded micro-chip with information that could have been dangerous for the US if placed in the wrong hands. This romantic anthology served as a reminder of what our servicemen have done and continue to do for us since the attack of 9-11 and what they have to sometimes sacrifice in order to carry out their duties. It was sweet, deeply moving and definitely a patriotic read.
Excellent Read.......2004-02-24
This book is an excellent read. All the authors are extremely witty. Each story is touching and appeals to the emotions. I especially loved Barbara Keaton's story.

superior (in every way) to the movie.......2007-07-23
Books usually are. This is the one to get--if you're interested in The Ed Wood Story.
I read bits and pieces of Wood's prose on the internet--and the funny thing is, or maybe I should say the INTERESTING thing is, he was far better at writing prose, than he was at writing movie dialogue and directing.
The problem with Eddie's paperbacks is that the guy was so damn obsessed with crossdressing. Why? Why couldn't he stay away from it for a while, at least long enough to write a paperback or two or three (even) without having the male lead dress up in a bra and angora sweater?
Sheesh. Stuff gets old after a while.
It's easy enough to relate to him for wanting to do something in the creative realm (as a filmmaker, etc.), and not be able to pull it off.. I mean, whose heart doesn't go out to him for that? Better yet, to anyone? Who couldn't get that?--other than the typical businessman who is solely focused on the bottom line, making a profit?
Anyway, this book has the whole story. It's a sad tale--with a downer of an ending. What can you do? The cards had been dealt--and poor Eddie's hand did not show much promise.
And the biggest BUMMER OF ALL is that people out there are making tons of money off this guy's hard work and sweat!
Justice? What's that?
Ed Wood Through The Eyes of Those Who Knew Him.......2006-12-16
This is a labor of love, taking ten years and many interviews, as well as research, to give us the best hope we'll ever have of getting an understanding of maverick Ed Wood.
The structure is mostly clips from interviews, letters, and some of Wood's works, mostly interviewes. Thus one gets a sense of Ed Wood that in no way tries to be objective - instead it's about people who knew him, and their statements stand on their own (even when they conflict). There is actual research done as well - filmographies, book summaries, a small history - but most of the book is interviews.
The style however actually works - someone like Ed Wood may not always leave a very good trail. In addition, being very much a unique person in the unique culture of bargain-basement hollywood, personal testimony is just about the only way to have a hope to comprehend his stories.
The result is a fascinating, personal, and respectful book on a surprisingly complex man. Don't expect any punches pulled either - Ed Wood for all his likeability and charm (which he had in spades), was an occasional conman, and as his life degenerated, he fell into alchoholism, poverty, and domestic violence. Do expect a very personal portrait.
This book is an absolute must for any fan of Wood, B-movies, and the underside of Hollywood. As I write this it is out of print, but I gladly shelled out the money for a used copy. May it return to press soon - but you owe it yourself to get it.
Touching bits and pieces of a fascinating person........2006-06-08
Rudolph Grey has interviewed many of the people who knew and worked with Edward D. Wood Jr, and the entire book is compiled of quotes from these people. This non-narrative style may at first seem boring, but it's not. It is fascinating and touching, sometimes funny and tragic and gives a good understanding of several aspects of Ed Wood.
It also contains many pictures and a detailed list of Wood's films and books, including plot descriptions. This definately is a must-have for everybody who is interested in Ed Wood or old Hollywood independent films in general.
Bitter Truths of Personal Failure, Pornography, and Alcoholism.......2005-10-16
Born in 1924, Wood was a highly decorated WWII Marine with an itch to wear women's clothes, make movies, and drink to excess. During his lifetime he would be notorious for transvestitism and alcoholism; he would also be involved in some twenty films, all of them cheaply made, all of them remarkable for their ludicrous incompetence. At the time of his 1978 death he was a raving drunk scratching out a living by writing pornography, and his film career was considered so trivial that not a single industry trade paper bothered to run an obituary.
But time does strange things. Within a few years of his death, Wood's films began to gain a cult-following, and in 1992 Rudolph Grey published NIGHTMARE OF ECSTASY, a loosely structured "oral history" of Wood's life as related by those who knew him best: his various wives and girl friends, his actors, his employers, his friends. The book would form the basis of Tim Burton's brilliant 1994 film ED WOOD.
Wood comes off as considerably less likeable here than in Tim Burton's bio-pic, which stopped short of detailing some of his more unsavory antics--including fraud, vicious alcoholism, the occasional fit of wife-beating, and his work in pornography. The Ed Wood of the 1950s might have been fun to know, at least so long as you didn't have any money in his ventures; the Ed Wood of the 1970s, however, was someone you would might have crossed the street to avoid.
Although a number of Wood's acquaintances led solid lives and attempted to help Wood as his life spiraled out of control, by and large Wood seems to have acted as a magnet for Hollywood hustlers, riff-raff, and trash--and before too long Wood himself became indicative of Los Angeles lowlife scene. While the interview subjects give conflicting accounts of specific events in Wood's life, the end result is the same: a tremendous sense of wasted effort, futile dreams, and unending pathos. This is some seriously bitter stuff.
NIGHTMARE OF ECSTASY concludes with a fairly solid chunk of factual data, including biographical notes on interview subjects, a chronology of major events in Wood's life, a bibliography that includes passages from Wood's novels, a comprehensive filmography--and even an annotated list of projects Wood was never able to get off the ground. I recommend the book, but I do so with a warning: if you're looking for a restatement of Tim Burton's film, you'll be significantly disillusioned.

Sobering Look at the Dark Side of Hollywood.......2005-08-06
I first heard of Edward Wood Jr, the so-called 'Worst Director of All Time', when the Tim Burton film "Ed Wood" was released in 1995. Although the film is excellent, it does paint quite a rosy picture of Wood's life. The story in this book is much grimmer.
The book itself is a collection of interviews with the people who knew and worked with Ed Wood, copiously illustrated with black and white photographs, and covers his life and career. There are many entertaining stories here, covering the making of such films as "Glen or Glenda", "Bride of the Monster" and "Plan 9 From Outer Space", and the reader encounters a wide variety of eccentrics, losers and dreamers, who Wood met living on the fringes of Hollywood.
Sometimes the recollections of interviewees contradict each other, but that is memory. Grey doesn't give his own opinions on the interviewees and their remembrances but wisely stays outside and avoids judgement. The book is a fairly comprehensive account of Wood's life, but it is let down by mispellings, and often the phots are quite hard to see. It is however a must for anyone interested in Wood, 1950s "B" movies, or Hollywood.

Poorly written, Useless information.......2007-06-16
I found this book to be an irritation to read. The author maybe a successful investor but does not demonstrate rudimentary knowledge of data analysis, summation or writing skills. Nor does the author value the readers time or intelligence. For example you are left to guess what the standard deviation of the data is. The author claims that he has tested the significance of his work and yet doesn't bother to provide the user with sufficient information to draw the same conclusions.
The logic flow (if there is any) is poor at best. Further the reader is left to summarize his scribblings into something coherent and useful. He has some capricious point system that may or may not work. I simply don't have enough confidence in his logic or desire to invest my time on it. The volume of the book could be significantly reduced in size without loss of content perhaps by 50% or more.
The author had done a much better job on his"Encyclopedia". This in my opinion is an attempt to cash in on the laudable qualities of that book. Don't waste your time or money on this one.
Technical Analysis as a Statistical Science or Art.......2006-05-03
I read several TA books trying to explain the market partipicants' thoughts while investing in financial markets by looking at price patterns. Yet these approches seem somewhat fictious and boring to me all the time. I guess the best is to leave this subject to statistical analysis of chart patterns as in this book. This is the best book in TA if you agree with this viewpoint
Excellent, substantive book.......2004-03-24
I highly recommend this book to people interested in chart pattern analysis. It is not an "easy read" - it requires concentration and time. The level of detail and complexity, however, is what makes the book so useful.
So many trading books put forth simple rules to trade and offer no evidence that their rules work. Anyone who's tried trading knows it is anything but simple - if it were, everyone could become a millionaire in their spare time after reading a couple of books or buying some infomercial product. This doesn't happen. What does happen is that the individual trader has to compete with people who have enormous 1) experience, 2) money, and 3) analytical resources - think big investment banks, hedge funds, and mutual funds. To even think of competing, you've got to learn as much as possible about the complexity of the market. It isn't simple, learn it in a weekend stuff - people spend years and millions of dollars trying to figure it out.
So, in the quest to figure it out, this book is one good tool. It offers statistically backed information on which chart patterns work most often, under which conditions. It doesn't include every chart pattern (someone suggested his other book is more inclusive - I haven't read it yet). It is complicated and really not an introduction to technical analysis (there are a lot of good books for that). But assuming you know the basics, and you want to go a little deeper, it's a great book. Where else can you get this kind of tested information? Otherwise, you have to figure it out yourself - through experience (probably costly and not as thorough) or backtesting (certainly time consuming and not as thorough). I'd rather read the book.
Disappointment.......2003-06-19
I'm a trader, history graduate, not a software/designer/ engineer.
"Trading Classic Chart Patterns" is not a book with rules to trade chart patterns: entry, exit, failures ....
Only statistics.... I read: this book is for novice trader: novice of what? high school software engineer?
Ratings: 28%
Original, different.......2003-05-28
There are tons of books in the market on chart patterns but most seem to be copying out from the same sources or from each other. There are only a handful of books that really attempt to see how well these patterns work and under what circumstances. This is one of the better book in this group.
This can be heavy reading if you are not a detail oriented person. I do not agree with all his methodologies in coming up with the statistics and scores but that is absolutely better than nothing. The methods are more refined than my own first attempt so I feel I learn something from his approach and it is worth the money (and the weight to carry the book)
The person who complained about the trend channels missing should look at his other book - Encyclopedia of chart patterns, which is also a delight.
I wouldn't take the statistics blindly though as these numbers can vary greatly under different assumptions and circumstances.
