Book Description
During his playing career, a baseball player's every action on the field is documentedevery at bat, every hit, every pitch. But what becomes of a player after he leaves the game? Some do, in fact, continue to be involved with baseball in some capacity, but many do not, following a different calling and fade into obscurity.
This exhaustive reference work presents information that has never before been available in one source. It briefly details the post-baseball lives of some 7,600 major leaguers, owners, managers, administrators, umpires, sportswriters, announcers and broadcasters who are now deceased. Each entry tells the date and place of the player's birth, the number of seasons he spent in the majors, the primary position he played, the number of seasons he spent as a manager in the majors (if applicable), his post-baseball career and activities, date and cause of his death, and his final resting place.
Customer Reviews:
Invaluable baseball reference.......2006-05-21
A book constantly open at my desk, rapidly becoming dog-eared, it is invaluable to my research into the lives and deaths of baseball personalities. I recommend the book highly to anyone doing similar research. I am especially interested in ballplayers who were Veterans of the Military and Lee gave me thousands to work with.
Rather Perfunctory.......2006-03-03
Not quite the book I thought it would be - someone purchasing a book titled "The Baseball Necrology" would most likely be more interested than the average baseball fan in what a player did after his career. The book lists the player's date and place of birth, date and place of death, the main job the player held after his career, the cause of death, and where he is buried; it sometimes does not list all those either. It does nothing more to expound on that, it gives no real biographical information, and covers FAR too many players with minimal experience (a year or less). Another irritating tweak is mentioning that Babe Ruth was also a pitcher, which should be WELL known to anyone who is interested enough to purchase this sort of book. It also states that Carl Hubbell was known for his knuckleball(?), once won 24 straight games, and his 1934 All Star Game performance; this is some information that any baseball fan already knows and also some information they would want to correct. I doubt this book would ever interest anyone with just a passing fancy in baseball but it contains far too little information for a real baseball fan. There is not enough good information in this book to warrant its price tag; snatch it up if it ever becomes available in paperback at a mere pittance but other than that, give it a pass. P.S. - if you're interested in the player's life after his career, read Bill James New Historical Baseball Abstract - a majority of the player entries have at least SOME post career information.
A labor of love for the baseball world.......2003-08-04
Bill Lee should be dubbed "Baseball's Undertaker." Maybe there is even room in Cooperstown for a plaque to that effect. In his book, "The Baseball Necrology," he gives brief (sometimes all too brief) paragraph synopsis of what happened to baseball players after they left baseball. This book is a reference book, not necessarily a narrative, but if you are a baseball fan or historian, consider your collection incomplete until you've added this gem.
When a baseball player leaves the major leagues, they often have 40 or 50 years of life ahead of them. How many times have you asked the question, "I wonder what happened to..." or, "I wonder where he's buried..." This book solves that question for those baseball players who have passed on to the big green diamond in the sky.
Though the reader is often left wanting to know more about a favorite player, Lee at least gives you an idea where to look (graveyard, obituary, etc.). It is easy to see how a more complete biography on any player would have made the book unmanageable. Heck, as is, the book is over 500 pages long.
This seems to be a great stepping stone for anyone wanting to do more research on baseball players and their lives. Even though some may be disappointed that there wasn't more information, or disappointed that the book wasn't written in a narrative format, this is an extra, extraordinary reference book, and an amazing contribution to America's pastime.
I have never seen anything quite like it in the library or in the bookstores.

Book Description
Homicide: Life on the Screen is a comprehensive account of the series on screen and behind the scenes. Benefiting from the cooperation of Baltimore Pictures and NBC, Tod Hoffman's book makes use of unprecedented access to the set and exclusive interviews. Hoffman spent time in Baltimore absorbing a feel for the city that is such an important character on the show. He spoke with each member of the cast, several writers, and Executive Producers Barry Levinson and Tom Fontana. He met with the real Baltimore homicide detectives upon whom many of the stories are based. With all of this in hand, he critically evaluates the series' content.
Customer Reviews:
Nice companion to both book and series.......1998-12-03
Hoffman's book is not quite up to the same level as David Kalat's companion book -- it's not as well organized, is less focused, and the episode guide is comparatively paltry -- but it is a fine analysis of, not just the TV series, but of the book on which it is based (David Simon's HOMICIDE: A YEAR ON THE KILLING STREETS).
The book is worth it purely for the present-day interviews with the cops that Simon followed around ten years ago. It is extremely enlightening to see what guys like Terry McLarney and Donald Worden and Tom Pellegrini are doing these days, and what they think of the show that is based on their work (not to mention the characters that are derived from them).
Good source of basic information about the show..........1998-11-26
Though not enough behind the scenes info, it really paints a good picture of what the series Homicide: Life on the Street is about, and where it comes from.

Book Description
The lights dim at the Paris Opera House. The exquisite Christine Daae enraptures the audience with her mellifluous voice. Immediately, Raoul de Chagny falls deeply in love. But the legend of the disfigured "opera ghost" haunts the performance, and as Raoul begins his pursuit of Christine, he is pulled into the depths of the opera house, and into the depths of human emotions. Soon Raoul discovers that the ghost is real and that he wields a terrifying power over Christine--a power as unimaginable as the ghost's masked face. As Raoul and the ghost vie for Christine's love, a journey begins into the dark recesses of the human heart, where desire, vulnerability, fear, and violence unravel in a tragic confrontation.

Customer Reviews:
Much better than the 2004 film!.......2006-06-20
(I am 14 years old) The Phantom of the Opera in the Modern Library version was much better than the 2004 film. I loved the film but then I wanted more so I read this. Gaston Leroux characterizes the Erik (The Phantom) so differently from the Don Juan-ish charcter in the film. Erik is just searching and longing for someone to love him as himself, he's not overly lustful or seducing as in the movie. He also isn't attractive beyond his face, but more described by some as a "living corpse." This new idea about Erik made my parents approve of the book more than the movie (they haven't read the book but they said that Erik was too "creepy" in the movie). I love how Leroux tells it as almost a documentary or a report, I haven't read a book told like that before. Although it seems that it would be so much more descriptive and attention holding if he told it as if he were there. Nonetheless I am very satisfied with this book and I will re-read it in the future! I highly recommend this book to adventure/love/suspense/not-so-gruesome horror story lovers! Enjoy!
A better translation for American students.......2006-03-20
Some of my students were asking questions about the book that I was reading. It was Gaston Laroux's, The Phantom of the Opera.
A few tried to read it when I was finished, but many of the references were lost to fourth graders. I ordered this one and they love it! Now, they want me to buy the young reader editions of all the books I read.
Easy to understand.......2006-02-24
This version of The Phantom of the Opera is an excellent one for beginning readers and adults as well. For beginners, it is an easy-to-understand way to introduce the classic work. But this is also true for older readers. The unabridged version is an excellent book, but it might be hard to follow or just plain intimidating for many readers. Reading the Stepping Stone version first will give a clear understanding of the book. For instance, time jumps around in the regular version - and the history of the Phantom isn't even given until the very end. The Stepping Stone version proceeds from start to finish with the normal time frame. Readers who enjoy the book, will find the transition to reading the "real" book much easier. Stepping Stones are a great way to ease kids and adults into classic reads.
Worth re-reading........2005-12-02
This story comes off as a pretty typical penny-dreadful sort of tale at first glance, but there are subtle themes that are not apparent on the first read. I won't bore with details, but it is an unusually rich, human story despite the somewhat fantastical setting and the exaggerations inherent in the character of Erik.
Speaking of Erik (that's "The Phantom" to those of you who don't know), he's one of the best villians I've encountered in a while, right up there with Darth Vader. he is capable of extreme wickedness, but is still sympathetic, and those are always the villians that you remember. While Andrew Lloyd Webber did a fair job of adapting this tale to the stage and eventually film, much changed in the process, particularly Erik. He is not so slick in this book as he is in the musical, and definitely a bit more crazy, but I actually prefer Leroux's original to the derivative. The 2004 film did not quite do justice to this complex story and those who have only seen the film and no other form of the Phantom story ought to do themselves a favor and read the book.
In reference to the specific edition I purchased, the Greg Hildebrandt illustrated one, it is not, as has been mentioned in some reviews above (probably due to the fact that Amazon has made an unholy mess by crossing reviews from the umpteen different versions of this book), an abridged version. There are distilled children's editions out there, one by Peter Neumeyer, and another in the Illustrated Classics series but this isn't a children's edition despite the illustrations. This is, as far as I can tell (at least by comparing it to the free Gutenberg Project version) a complete translation of the original French text. I bought this edition specifically for the illustrations, which I enjoy, but some people do not care for the Hildebrandt style. If you like this artist, though, it is worth having for the pictures alone.
The Phantom of the Opera.......2005-12-01
If you're looking for a scary love story, then this is the book for you! Eric has the voice of an angel but the face of a monster. When he takes his ask off people scream and run away. So, he hides himself away in the bottom of the opera house.
Eric falls in love with a beautiful singer named Christine. Christine is forced to love him but she loves another man named Raul. Raul knows about the phantom and wants to hurt him.
The phantom scares everybody by turning the lights off and tacks Christine to his dungeon there she sees Raul in the dungeon...but you will have to read the book to hear the ending.

Joseph!! Joseph!!.......2000-11-18
Joseph is one of the greatest musicals I have ever seen. As a 14-year-old participant in this production, I strongly recomend this music to anyone who loves Andrew Lloyd Webber. This is a great collection of ballads and up-beats.
Review by Francis Mcgill.......2000-11-11
Joseph is one of many brothers. He is his dad's favorite so the brothers don't like him much. Joseph is given a colorful coat by his dad wich gets the brothers very mad. They sell him into slavery. Potiphar is a rich man in Egypt and he buys Joseph. Joseph gets thrown into jail because Patiphar's wife is flirting with him. He becomes well known because he can interpert dreams. Will he get out of jail?
It's fun even if you don't know the music........1999-09-21
The Quentin Blake illustrations are cool. The lyrics are very readable. (Quentin Blake illustrated many Roald Dahl books) A 4 year old friend of mine loves this book and sings along with it.

Customer Reviews:
Basic - For the novice.......2007-10-06
As someone who has practiced public relations for decades, I found this pedestrian and not at all to my liking. While well-written and informative, it is more for the novice or the small business owner who needs a basic knowledge of ways to promote himself or his/her business.
So it depends where you're at in relation to public relations as to whether or not this book is something you want to read. If you have a lot of PR knowledge, you don't need this book. On the other hand, if you have little or no knowledge of how to promote yourself, get the book. You might gain some useful information.
Practical, Broad-Based Perspective on PR.......2007-07-30
A friend of mine who is a PR professional recommended this book to me. As someone with next to no background in PR before I read this book, I am amazed how much I gained from the philosophy and approach it describes. On several occassions applying what I learned from Full Frontal PR has translated into successful projects in both work settings and professional organizations in which I am involved.
PR Bible.......2007-07-05
If you're in PR or marketing - get this book now. It's got a lot of common sense know-how in the pages. Plus, it makes some great connections between PR and marketing. What an inspiration!
A Non-pictorial Textual Book for Buzz Builders (if you were worried).......2007-03-25
Richard Laermer, PR pro of a New York City Public Relations firm, spills the beans on the secrets of the buzz-building industry in this concise and easy to read book. "Full Frontal PR: Building Buzz About Your Business, Your Product, or You," is a perfect little concise guide, one that is very readable by the way, for those medium to small businesses that may not have it in their budget yet to hire a marketing or advertisement firm.
I have been in the Public Relations field for three short months now and picked up Laermer's book from Amazon to delve into some professional reading on my new-found profession and I must say, it didn't disappoint. I found myself learning a lot and tried to hone in on the chapters discussing on-line ways to build buzz as its very much an interest of mine as well as directly related to my professional job. If your marketing and communications budget is tight, you could easily pick up Laermer's book and take a few suggestions (in your spare time right?) and run with them to get your business more exposure in the press and the public eye. After all, you've got to find some way to get your product, service, mission in life out there. I used to do non-profit management and I have to say, I wished I ran across Laermer's book upon starting that job. I think it would have given our non-profit better tools to court the media than those we were using.
One of the best features I liked about the book is the invaluable web site recommendations collected at the back and scattered throughout the book. I haven't had time to peruse them yet at length but plan on book marking them and using them at work. Some of his advice was covering known ground so the book might not appeal to the PR pros who have been in the industry for 3 or more years I'd say. But I'm sure for the open-minded among you, there are things you can pick through from "Full Frontal PR," that might jog some thoughts and ideas. I think for some folks who have been practicing PR for awhile, there is a reluctance to embrace new media formats for getting the message out there in the papers, on the web, and on the streets and in the homes...this book may just open some of those windows for you.
Good book. Catch a buzz in your local bar while reading this book and then follow-through with some of Laermer's advice. You never know what just might pop up? ...mmw
Packed with useable tips.......2005-12-26
I found this book to be packed with practical ideas and information. After reading it I felt that I had a sound basic knowledge of how the news media works, and was confident about how to prepare materials for them to use. Of course every layman thinks they know how the media works, but after reading this you realise how intricate it can be.
Strengths of the book:
- Covers the whole industry - print, TV, internet
- Fairly up to date (2003), with a better Internet chapter than a 2005 PR book I just finished
- Dense with tips and practical information
- Written in a fun, up-beat style
- You will walk away from this book and actually use many of the suggestions. I've had a top-name PR agency on retainer for a year and I now realise how uninspiring and lazy they have been.
Weaknesses:
- Information isn't logically laid out. The first third is set out as an encylopedia in alphabetical order, rather than a logical narrative, which I find is a poor way of "teaching". Overall it is a collection of tips rather than the step-by-step guide it claims to be
- Assumes you are in US and only deal with US media
- A little bit too up-beat at times for my taste (no shortage of exclamation marks)
- Assumes quite an advanced understanding of the media to begin with - reads like he's talking to a fellow PR buddy over a coffee
- I think case studies are especially useful, but there aren't many in here.
Overall: Highly recommended, it really gave me a "quantum leap" in terms of my understanding of the media, inspiration, and practical ideas for how to get my material out.
Incidentally: Much, much better than "Media Relations" by David Henderson which I finished last week.
