      Ian Lloyd has succeeded in producing a book of highly enjoyable, and well taken photos, but he should have put as much time into fact checking as he did picking out pics. I'd say buy the book, but just look at the pictures. Don't bother reading the mistake riddled text.

        4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photos!.......2005-01-03

        I have been following the life of Prince William since his birth (though not fanatically) and thought this book looked like it might bring some new light to the boy who became a man the moment he walked behind his mother's coffin that sad day in 1997. The information in the book covers all of William's formative years all the way up to present day, but the main reason to purchase the book is for the photgraphs. Several are never-before seen (at least by me) and the up-close shots are bright, crisp and clear. You get a feel for this young man who must learn step-by-step on how to handle the press without turning them against you (surely no easy task and one neither of his parents ever fully accomplished, though there may be hope for Charles). I read the book in one day since the early information was not new to me and savored the pictures. I came away with a new appreciation for the unique position Prince William has and a hope that he finds the happiness in life that has eluded Charles and that Diana seemed on just the verge of finding.

              4 out of 5 stars A book for your children to enjoy!.......2007-10-19

              I really enjoyed this book. It gives a valuable message that young girls need to hear today. The book displays Princess Amina as a young woman of character, wisdom and that is worthy of a man of honor and good character. Although I wish that the book had more to the ending, I look forward to any additional stories written about Princess Amina of Zaria.

              5 out of 5 stars Excellent Children's story with values.......2007-10-19

              Amina is a great children's story that promotes values and character building. It also promotes self esteem and diversity. I think children ages 5 to 14 will enjoy this book. It is written with excellence and the graphic designs are bright, and full of color.

              4 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2006-06-24

              Although this book feels a little dated now and could use an update, it is still a must have for preservationists who are interested in the struggles that revolved around this battlefield.

              The current price (as of 6/06) of $41 is a little steep for a book of this kind. If you can get beyond the price, this is a quick read. Even at well over 200 pages, it's so interesting that I could hardly put it down and zipped right through it.

              Anyone familiar with the Civil War Preservation Trust would surely want to read a book from them in a similar vein as this one. I'm sure they have tons of stories to tell.

              3 out of 5 stars Solid administrative history.......2000-12-27

              In his introduction to Battling for Manassas, former NPS historian Ed Bearss correctly notes that this book ought to be "must reading" for public officials, developers, and preservationists who will eventually find themselves on opposite sides of debates about the preservation of land for historic sites, especially controversies that affect land near the nation's battlefields. Joan Zenzen has done a fine job of researching and writing this administrative history of Manassas National Battlefield Park. She has not only made sense of the paper records that flourish luxuriantly around government agencies, but she has also interviewed key players on both sides of the more recent of the many controversies that have swirled around the park. Zenzen's prose is serviceable if unexciting. A heavier editorial hand might have reduced the number of awkward phrasings and passive voices. Still, in literary style it ranks in the top five percent of National Park Service administrative histories, a notoriously pedestrian genre. A more serious criticism is that the book does not compare the land-use controversies at Manassas with those at other American historic sites, at least beyond limited analogies to Gettysburg and Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania. Perhaps that is just as well. Because it lies just outside the Beltway in an area inhabited by the rich, famous, and the politically potent, Manassas is hardly a reliable model for what might happen in similar circumstances at other American battlefields.

              Book Description

              Bill Werber's claim to fame is unique: he is the last living person to have a direct connection to the 1927 Yankees, "Murderers' Row," a team hailed by many as the best of all time. Signed by the Yankees while still a freshman at Duke University, Werber spent two weeks that summer of '27 on the Yankee bench to "gain experience"—and was miserable and lonely, ignored by everyone. After graduating in 1930 Werber was back with the Yankees, but he was soon sent to the minors for seasoning (including a stretch with Casey Stengel). He returned to the big leagues in 1933 and was promptly traded to the Red Sox. A fleet-footed third baseman, Werber also played for the Athletics, Reds, and Giants, leading the league three times in stolen bases and once in runs scored. He was with the Reds when they won the pennant in 1939 and 1940. Werber played with or against some of the most productive hitters of all time, including Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Lou Gehrig, and Joe DiMaggio. Rich in anecdotes and humor, Memories of a Ballplayer is a clear-eyed memoir of the world of big-league baseball in the 1930s.

              Customer Reviews:

              4 out of 5 stars A bit too full of himself.......2006-08-29

              Werber played with and against some of the biggest names in baseball, and some of his anecdotes are quite interesting and enlightening (for instance, the fact that Jimmie Foxx was probably the fastest runner in baseball but was somewhat bashful about it). If you are up on your history, you will enjoy reading about Ruth, Gehrig and the rest. However, Werber's "preachy, I'm a damn fine fellow and I'll tell you why" attitude wore thin on me.

              5 out of 5 stars Another time, another place..........2003-11-16

              Bill Werber shares his experiences and remembrances of playing the National pastime in the 1930's. It was an era that is difficult for modern fans to imagine. Thanks to the memories of Werber and the skill of co-author Paul Rogers at detailing them, the life of a ballpayer pre-intercontinental travel, airplanes, multi year contracts and night games comes alive for the reader.

              Werber was somewhat of an anomaly for the time; College educated, well read and intellectually curious, he made a stark contrast to the typical little educated, hard living, hard drinking, brawling ballplayer of that generation. Yet, he possessed a toughness of his own. A toughness that enabled him as a rookie to withstand and even return the barbs of veteren Yankee ballplayers. A toughness that would serve him well in disputes with teammates, opponents and management throughout his career.

              Werber details recollections of those he fought with and against, came to admire and befriend, and gives an excellent oral history of what is was like to be a ballplayer during the depression era. His memories of the greats of the period, Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson and the others, sheds light on the pecking order that has always existed between the greats and their less talented contemporaries. It makes for interesting and informative reading. As an Oral History, the book is not designed to take political positions or rail against social injustice. The purpose of good Oral History is to tell the story of what it was like, not what it should have been like. This book is a valuable contribution to the search for historical truth about the game of baseball. As such it belongs in your library!

              2 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity.......2001-07-20

              Bill Werber led an interesting life on and off the field in baseball, but this collection of anecdotes from the 1930s and 40s misses the opportunity for Werber to explain how he felt about one of baseball's biggest problem in the first half of the 20th Century: segregation. Werber was a vocal opponent of integration in the 1940s and openly opposed the selection of Frank Robinson as the first African-American manager back in 1974. If Werber could have explained his positions on these matters, this book would have made a lasting impression. Instead, it just sort of floats by without making any impact.

                      An excellent source for a balanced approach to care of the singing and speaking voice. It has depth without becoming tiresomely technical and without talking down to the reader. Anyone who uses the voice professionally can learn a lot about protecting this tool/instrument: teachers, lawyers, singers, etc.

                      5 out of 5 stars Catch yourself draw beautiful portraits of famous people!.......2003-06-01

                      The author is the best drawing teacher you never had. Thanks to his books, particularly this one, I really surprised myself drawing things I never thought I could. Buy this book and catch yourself drawing an excellent portrait of Chaplin, Einstein, Shakespeare. It is a uniquely satisfying experience.

                      People always say they can't draw faces. Faces are too complex to draw. Well now you can. Get the book and impress yourself and friends.

                      5 out of 5 stars What a book.......2001-07-12

                      I started off drawing faces from a book that shows all these circles, then all of the sudden have a great looking face. I was extremely annoyed until I stumbled upon this book. It has amazing steps that lets you draw great looking faces in a short period of time. I now have drawn Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Humphrey Bogart, Charlie Chaplin and LOTS more to come.

                      4 out of 5 stars A really good book.......1999-01-30

                      This is a really good book. It has a lot of historical figures as well as current people to draw. The only drawback is that it was first published a while back, so pictures like Barbra Streisand and Bill Cosby are kind of outdated.

                            This book was designed as a children's book, but adults, especially older adults who recognize the faces, have just as much fun as kids when it comes to altering the facial combinations. It's a good book for grandparents to have on hand when the grandchildren visit. It is also a good choice for "waiting rooms" where people want to stay occupied, but don't want to start reading something that they won't want to be interupted. The sturdy pages hold up well to frequent handling. This book has been out-of-print, since the year that Prince Charles & Princess Diana separated. Their caricatures are side-by-side in the book, and the British-based publisher ceased printing when the marriage ended. After Diana's tragic death, the book became a collector's item.

                                      Book Description

                                      Like a moose in the living room some problems are just plain hard to ignore. Try as we might to keep them out of sight, they have a way of hanging around, demanding to be addressed. The best thing to do is confront them and look for a solution. Those who fail to do so usually come to regret that they didn't put the moose on the table.

                                      PUT THE MOOSE ON THE TABLE is an effort to capture the lessons learned by one man over the course of a life and a career in the corporate world. It's about his experiences and the lessons in leadership he learned during a time of unprecedented change in the world of American business. It's about beliefs reinforced, such as the importance of values and character, and about things learned the hard way, especially while managing change in the absence of a clear and compelling strategic vision.

                                      PUT THE MOOSE ON THE TABLE contains lessons about

                                      * Leading by example
                                      * Vision
                                      * Successful communication
                                      * Mentoring
                                      * Depth vs. breadth
                                      * Openness vs. secrecy
                                      * Values and the bonds of reciprocity
                                      * Deciding what business you're in
                                      * Risk taking and risk aversion
                                      * Planning for succession

                                      Though these observations don't provide a universal remedy for all situations, in all places, at all times, there are conclusions to be drawn and lessons to be learned.

                                      Excellent business book! It doesn't bog down with traditional jargon or flashy catch phrases; rather, discusses leadership in the first person.

                                      The reviewers above all have something to gain by giving this publication perfect ratings and glowing reviews. The culture of 'nice' at Lilly is not one of 'open communication' but like that at many other large corporations--passive aggressive maneuvering and deeply entrenched politics. I do agree with the Publishers Weekly review regarding this book.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A Values-Driven Memoir and Management Guide.......2003-08-13

                                      Mr. Randall Tobias teamed with his son, Todd, to create this vivid memoir which can be an indirect mentoring experience for anyone who wants to be a company leader.

                                      Mr. Tobias rose rapidly in the old AT&T before the break-up, and then helped struggle with the lack of direction after the break-up. From that experience, he learned many lessons about what leaders must do. When he unexpectedly became the CEO of Eli Lilly in 1993, Mr. Tobias moved quickly to put those principles into place.

                                      The story is filled with hope, sadness, loss, and ultimate gain. In many ways, it's a more realistic description of leadership than most that you will see.

                                      Mr. Tobias was extremely successful at Eli Lilly, and he shares what went right and what did not . . . and why.

                                      For those who are interested in the questions of company culture, values and vision, the material on AT&T and Eli Lilly are marvelous examples of what needs to be done. Eli Lilly had always been a company with a strong culture, good values and fine vision, but the interpretation of the values had gone wrong. The focus on people had come to mean a desire to have entitlements, which needed to be redefined. Mr. Tobias explains how he went about making that redefinition and convincing others to believe in it.

                                      The Tobias family suffered a tragedy during the Eli Lilly years. You'll read all about that in the book as well.

                                      So what's the moose all about? In many organizations, big issues are ignored because they are so big and daunting. It's as though a moose was sitting on the table, and you were trying to run a meeting. Do you stop and deal with the moose, or just get on with the meeting? Mr. Tobias says it's clear that you have to encourage everyone to mention and deal with the moose. I agree with that point. Many of my clients over the years lacked the will and skill to address their major issues. Often my greatest contribution has amounted to little more than helping them get the moose off the table so they could get on with the other issues that the moose was overwhelming.

                                      The only thing I didn't like about this book was the lists of epigrams beginning on page 246. They just repeat epigrams from in the book. I suggest that you skip that part.

                                      Where in your company are you ignoring a moose on the table? Why? How can you get rid of that moose?

                                      Put The Moose On The Table, by Randall Tobias, is Who Moved My Cheese and more! It occurred to me, while I was reading Tobias' book,
                                      that finally here's the advice I need when my cheese is moved! Why not learn from the best?
                                      Fortunately for the reader, Tobias shares invaluable lessons in leadership by putting his own life on the table.
