5 out of 5 stars An Uncommon View of Royalty.......2004-07-13

Childhood at Court is an entertaining look at the lives of royal children at the British Court from 1819 to 1914, roughly the lifespan of Queen Victoria and her son Edward VII. There have been innumerable biographies of Queen Victoria and her children, but none that have focussed only on their childhoods. This book therefore fills a gap, and does so with an interesting, fresh style which makes use of plenty of anecdotes, some well known, others more obscure. I was interested to come across some of these stories, because I have read many histories and biographies of the period, and many of Van der Kiste's anecdotes were brand new. Both Queen Victoria and her son Edward VII had childhoods best described as dysfunctional, but its interesting to see how the future king seems to have learned from his parents' mistakes and given his own children a happier upbringing. Queen Victoria also seems to have mellowed as she grew older, and its nice to read about the antics her younger grandchildren and great-grandchildren were allowed to get away with, like slapping the Queen's hand and saying "Naughty Grandmamma!!"

This is a nice addition to anyone's library of books about royals or books about children.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting!.......2004-06-27

This book was so interesting! Enough has certainly been written about Queen Victoria that you'd think yet another biograpy of her and her family is not what the world needs: but this book is very much true to its title in concentrating on Victoria's childhood, that of her children, and that of her grand-children. People say that Childhood was invented in the Victorian period, and it is fascinating to see how an ultra-priveledged upbringing changed in the 100 years that this book covers. Even the changes that took place while Victoria's children were growing up is fascinating: the eldest daughter was married to a German prince at age 15, while her youngest daughter didn't marry until she was in her late 20's!

I definately recomend this book to anyone who is interested in british royal history, or the history of childhood. Since Victoria's children married all over Europe, anyone who is interested in European history would also find this book well worth a read. Since it is not too long and not too dry, it would also be a good book for a teenager or young person who is ready for adult non-fiction, but wants something that they can relate to.

5 out of 5 stars Luck of Birth.......2004-02-20

I found this book an enthralling read from start to finish. It transported me through time to the Victorian and Edwardian eras - a fascinating study of the lives of the matriarchal Queen Victoria, her children and grandchildren.
John Van der Kiste paints a vivid picture of the lifestyle of the aristocracy. I couldn't help comparing their lives to the poverty-stricken living in squalor, but that is for a different book.

The book begins with the story of Queen Victoria's own childhood which it goes into in some detail. It shows how she developed from a shy and insular young girl to a matriarch of the first order. We are then taken through the early married life of the Queen and the Prince Consort and the birth of each of their nine children.

There is a lot of fascinating detail in this book about the family life of the Queen. There are many anecdotes about the children, and although contact between parent and child was much less than we would have in a modern day family, it is plain that Victoria and Albert were loving and devoted parents who took a keen interest in the development of their children.

As time progresses we are introduced to the Queen's grandchildren and great grandchildren. It is interesting to read of the contrast in the Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandra as parents, as unlike Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as you could wish. They were much more lively and fun loving and this really comes across as you read further.
There are some wonderful anecdotes about King Edward and his grandchildren. His geniality sparkles from the page.

There seems to have been an about turn with George V who was a much more distant parent. It was interesting to read about all his children, as one usually hears most about the two brothers who later became King.

If you like English or European history you will find this book fascinating. It gives a flavour of the time and is eminently readable without being too heavy, even when going into politics, and without being frothy.
It is fascinating to learn of the inter-personal relationships within this massive family descending from one remarkable lady.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and felt that the individuals almost leapt from the page. I understood far more about them and their role in England's future having read it.

To make a history book riveting takes a particular talent and this author seems to have this in abundance. John Van der Kiste has a talent for getting right into a subject so that you can really imagine that you are there as an observer.

I highly recommend this book.

Book Description

The author covers the six-to-twelve day races that would cover up to 500 miles of climbing, swimming, navigation, kayaking, and more as a journalist before he began competing in them. The book is a dramatic, fascinating, intensely personal story of adventure racing written from his dual perspective as a journalist and an athlete.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Passion For Living.......2000-12-19

There is a message in this book much greater than that of finishing the Raid Gauloises. It's the journey that's important, not so much the finish.

If your looking for a how-to book on adventure racing, this may not be for you. However, if your looking to read the story of one man's accomplishments and how those accomplishments relate to adventure racing, this is certainly a book to read.

The author takes us through his experiences of adventure racing both on and off the course, sharing the essence of his human spirit.

It's a story of dreams that became a reality. A story of teamwork, discipline and friendship. A story of love for one's family and a passion for life.

Thanks Marty and enough with the ibuprofen, that stuff will kill you.

5 out of 5 stars Rockin Great Book.......2000-11-11

I just want to say that I think this is a great book. I like to adventure race and I probably wouldn't have hear of this book if it wasn't for Survivor. I'm glad I did. It was uplifting, motivating, and about far more than just adventure racing. I was interested to find out Dugard and Mark Burnett had such a long history together, which is catalogued in the book. It's like the Survivor story actually begins with this book, with the show as the next generation of outdoor survival.

4 out of 5 stars Informative and Sometimes Inspiring.......2000-10-14

This book is really two stories within one. The author starts by telling how he changed his life by taking a chance and pursuing a dream. It is a story of a corporate professional who grows disillusioned with his job, and spends his days daydreaming about a more exciting and fulfilling life. Taking a leap of faith, with the support of his wife, the author decides finally to pursue his dream as a free lance writer. We follow the author's adventure first as a correspondent for a new sport, and then listen as the author is drawn into the sport as a participant. The author is very informative when it comes to describing the adventure race experience. If you have ever wondered what an adventure race entails, and what motivates people to undertake such an endeavor, this book is for you. If you are stuck in a deadend job and dream of doing something different, then you may want to read this book as well. The editing could be better (I often times wondered if the author used the same editor on "Survivor"), but this is only a small distraction from the material contained in the book.

3 out of 5 stars Misleading.......2000-01-17

I was boiling with anticipation to read this. It seems I can't get enough of Adventure Racing whether it's watching the Eco Challenge, reading about the Raid Gaulioses or participating in the Hi Tec Series. However, most of my anticipation was destroyed during the first part of this book. I'm happy for Mr Dugard in that he was able to escape corporate America and do what he dreamed of doing. But he beat the issue to death. Factor in his story on the Concorde and he has no right calling this book what he did. It's the classic bait and switch. I wanted a first hand account on what it's like to train, participate in and then finish an Eco Challenge and/or Raid. I just didn't get that. In the end he finally did give me a little taste of what I was after when he described his experiences with Team Lestra Sport. But it just wasn't enough. I do give him credit there as he did finish the race even after the rest of Lestra Sport was forced to drop out.

But how will she know which man to trust until it is too late?

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars The silliest book you'll ever read.......2007-07-21

Rescued from death by kindly, intelligent rabbits, Nicollette Caron grows up to have an ultra-rapid heartbeat and the ability to induce death in her suitors by over-stimulation. If this were a tale told with an ounce of humor or irony, it might have been worth reading. Alas, this Victorian bodice-ripper is told with grim earnestness and no respect for the intelligence of the audience. Unless you believe it likely that Queen Victoria would import a guillotine (!) from the French president in order to execute innocent prisoners, you may have trouble with the anachronisms that abound on every page. Most readers will be hard-pressed to believe a second of this embarrassing effort.

3 out of 5 stars The Rime of The Ancient Mariner.......2006-06-16

RABBIT HEART reminds me of the epic poem, THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER.

Reportedly, that poem was written by its author, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, when he was in an opium induced stupor.

Like THE ANCIENT MARINER, the novel RABBIT HEART also is richly detailed and it tells a compelling story.

As an author, Colleen Hitchcock spins a good tale; both her language and her minutiae are engrossing. She must have done a great deal of research about Victorian England.

Still, just like THE ANCIENT MARINER, the peculiar plot of RABBIT HEART has overtones of being a rather disturbed--albeit extraordinarily complicated--fantasy, containing a fair amount of erotica as well.

The fact that RABBIT HEART can be taken, even remotely, as plausible is a tribute to its author's skill.

5 out of 5 stars I had a hard time putting this book down..........2006-06-16

I love to read, but generally will not sit for hours getting lost in books. Not because I'm not interested in what I'm reading but because I'm a single mother and nights are the only time I have to myself to read...I may read a chapter or two in an hours time and call it quits because I'm just too damn tired to go on. With this book however I stayed up many nights past my bedtime lol. Something I really liked about this book which I noticed isn't common amongst romance novels (atleast that I know of) is that the chapters have titles...I loved that, it made you excited to read on because you got an idea as to what was in store for the next chapter. I cannot wait for the sequel and I plan to be a very big fan of Colleen Hitchcock :)

3 out of 5 stars Rabbit Heart.......2006-05-28

Nicolette Caron has a secret; actually, thirteen secrets that she must keep hidden. To do this, Nicolette must travel from town to town in order to stay one step ahead of the authorities. It seems that Nicolette's secret is a string of dead lovers; lovers that she inadvertently killed with her passion. Full of remorse but unable to face the scandal, Nicolette chooses to run away. However, everything catches up to her in the form of a private investigator named Jackson Lang.

Jackson Lang is an investigator with Scotland Yard. Given the case of finding the killer of several men, he will not back down until he finds the murderer, even if the murderer turns out to be the one woman he desires above all others. Jackson finds his morals challenged and his priorities shift as he falls in love with Nicolette. Alas, his love is not meant to be when authorities sentence her to hang for the deaths of her lovers.

Lord Blake Baston knows that Nicolette is the woman that he wants for all time. Now all he has to do is convince her that he is healthy enough to be the lover she needs, as well as strong enough to keep her safe. Blake is willing to do anything to save her life because a fortune-teller told him that only one man will be strong enough for Nicolette. Blake knows that he is that man. Time is running out for him convince Nicolette because her life is getting ready to end.
Rabbit Heart by Colleen Hitchcock just didn't deliver for me. I had a hard time understanding the first person dialogue and many times put the book down after becoming frustrated trying to keep up with the many plot lines going back and forth. While the storyline was catchy, it seemed far-fetched to me. My practical side just couldn't believe that thirteen men would have perished from bad hearts in Nicolette's bed. Upon reflection, Rabbit Heart just wasn't the book for me.

5 out of 5 stars She's the mistress every man wants and feels he must possess........2006-05-05

How can you not be intrigued when the first line of the book reads, "There was a dead man in my boudoir?" It also puts a whole new slant on the phrase la petite mort, doesn't it? Unfortunately, that death was permanent.

It's August 1891, and Nicollette Caron's thirteenth lover has just died in her arms trying to please her. She did her best to convince Denton not make love to her. He didn't listen and now he's paid with his life.

Nicollette is re-dressing Denton's lifeless body when Marie stumbles upon the garish scene. They devise a plan to dispose of the body and make it appear Denton died from an accident. Once they've completed the task, Nicollette runs off to Glastonbury. Numbers fourteen and fifteen await her arrival.

Following her trail is Scotland Yard's best detective; Jackson Lang. He's determined to find the person who murdered Denton. They meet when he journeys to Glastonbury on business and pleasure. He is quite intrigued with the young lady.

Two more bodies are found. A telegram reaches Jackson with news that twelve bodies were discovered in Italy and France in much the same condition. He's convinced that Nicollette is guilty; however, he must have evidence to prove it.

Queen Victoria wants the murderer found and hanged. When she receives word the suspect is most likely a French woman, she asks that the guillotine be borrowed from France. What better way to execute a French citizen?

In the meantime, Nicollette has caught the eye of Lord Baston. He's determined to have her and nothing she can say will prevent it. Will he be able to save her from kneeling at the feet of Madame Guillotine?

Colleen Hitchcock's RABBIT HEART is a compelling and somewhat dark Victorian story. She introduces a young woman whose heart is as innocent as a babe's but who is cursed with a physical flaw in her heart that kills people who get too close. Nicollette's story is told in the first person and offers a glimpse into her tortured soul. She wants nothing more than to be loved as a woman should be without the complications.

The story reaches its climax, no pun intended, when Jackson is forced to arrest her. The trial that follows is filled with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat, chewing on your nails and turning the pages.

Jackson's interest in the forensic sciences was incorporated into the storyline and became an essential piece of the plot. I was intrigued with his analytical mind and the questions he posed to the doctors. He had no qualms asking for detailed information about the conditions of the corpses.

RABBIT HEART is not for everyone. But if you're interested in reading something a little out of the ordinary, this one's great. This was one of the most intriguing books I've read in years! It's a keeper and a recommended read. I anxiously wait for the next one in the series.

Book Description

A lively history of the Frankenstein myth, tracing its evolution from a Romantic nightmare to its prominence in today's imaginative landscape.

Frankenstein began as the nightmare of an unwed teenage mother in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1816. At a time when the moral universe was shifting and advances in scientific knowledge promised humans dominion over that which had been God's alone, Mary Shelley envisioned a story of human presumption and its misbegotten consequences. Two centuries later, that story is still constantly retold and reinterpreted, from Halloween cartoons to ominous allusions in the public debate, capturing and conveying meaning central to our consciousness today and our concerns for tomorrow. From Victorian musical theater to Boris Karloff with neck bolts, to invocations at the President's Council on Bioethics, the monster and his myth have inspired everyone from cultural critics to comic book addicts. This is a lively and eclectic cultural history, illuminated with dozens of pictures and illustrations, and told with skill and humor. Susan Tyler Hitchcock uses film, literature, history, science, and even punk music to help us understand the meaning of this monster made by man. 68 illustrations.

For 191 years, Frankenstein's hulking monstrosity could be found, not only in our nightmares, but also on bookshelves, comic-book racks, theater stages, movie and television screens, as well as toy-store shelves. The monster indeed cast quite a long shadow across our popular culture and literary historian, Ms. Hitchcock (Mad Mary Lamb: Lunacy and Murder in Literary London), does a Herculean effort to enlighten the reader to the many facets and incarnations of the monster- from Shelley's original novel, to Karloff's tragic portrayal, to Dick Briefer's 1950's horror comic The Monster of Frankenstein and beyond.

Frankenstein: A Cultural History is a comprehensive and entertaining account of Shelley's infamous literary creation, and serves as a testament to the popularity of that, in Shelley's own words, "hideous phantasm of a man."

Book Description

Was Alfred Hitchcock a cynical trifler with his audience's emotions, as he liked to pretend? Or was he a profoundly humane artist? Most commentators leave Hitchcock's self-assessment unquestioned, but this book shows that his movies convey an affectionate, hopeful understanding of human nature and the redemptive possibilities of love. Lesley Brill discusses Hitchcock's work as a whole and examines in detail twenty-two films, from perennial favorites like North by Northwest to neglected masterpieces like Rich and Strange.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Take another look at the Master.......2000-04-13

Brill's contention is fascinating: Hitchcock was NOT a macabre misfit interested only in the sick and scary. Rather, says Brill, H's films on the whole are hopeful, affirming, generating conventional suspense and working toward a happily-ever-after ending. Works like Psycho and Vertigo, Brill contends, are exceptions to more typical works like North by Northwest and The 39 Steps, which are quite upbeat and happy. According to Brill, Hitch is really an ironist whose occasional subversions of his generally hopeful outlook have received more critical attention; but that doesn't mean his whole ouevre is one of despair or pessimism. Brill argues magnificently in many well-informed essays; though his citation of Trouble with Harry as the quintessential Hitchcock film is a bit hard to swallow. Highly recommended for Hitchcock fans!

          4 out of 5 stars A fun book.......2001-12-01

If you you're like me and you love lists that try to rank the best of anything, and you also love classic albums, this book is for you. While nobody will agree entirely with the list compiled, it's an absolutely fun read, especially for the fact that it includes 1000 albums. I've never seen a book try to rank a list of great albums that large.

Warning: it is very British focused, especially in the top 100. As an American, I had never heard of a lot of the artists and albums here, especially the post-1990 ones. Bands such as Oasis and Manic Street Preachers apparently get WAY too high billing across the Ocean. Personally, I liked reading about these newer bands because I'm always curious to hear what other countries are listening to, but I can see why some poeople may be turned off by this.

One other problem is that there's no alphabetical index in the back. They absolutely should have one in the next edition (due out soon I think!). Either by album title or artist would be fine, but it would make things much easier to reference.

I've said my peace. Buy and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read.......2001-09-17

The reader from Detroit has made a mistake in his review of this book. He explains his distress in discovering that Nirvana and John Lennon aren't listed in the 'Important Band' section. Well, if he had actually read it properly he would have discovered the the secton is named 'Top 5 Albums by 100 Key Artists', and as Nirvana and John Lennon (as a solo artist) did not record as many as 5 albums this explains their absence from the list.

This book is a terrific read for anyone who is interested in popular music, especially someone who is trying to build up a collection of great music. Although the list does seem a bit odd in parts (why are four Beatles albums in the top five?, why are The Spice Girls and the Monkees in the list at all?). But overall it's a good list, and it's especially good to see a lot of great British bands from the last decade high up on the list (Charlatans, Massive Attack, Pulp, Radiohead, Stone Roses etc).

5 out of 5 stars More than expected - AND Less than expected!.......2000-11-08

First off, the version that I was shipped features a much "lamer" cover then the one picture... Ok, your right, that doesent matter too much ;) here goes: The book is very nice, I thought it VERY complete, and agreed with many of the listings. This book would be great for someone trying to build a collection, or for someone interested about learning interesting snippits about their collection. Some of the downside of this book include its shape, the book is too skinny, so its hard to read, so its kind of a pocket book. And unlike a book such as "Beatle Songs" there is no way to look up a single band or single song. Because of this, I spent an hour looking through to see if "Magical Mystery Tour" and "Dookie" were on the list. Another maybe minor complaint I have is the list in the back entitled "important artists and their most important albums" (thats not perfect... but somthing like that. I found two absenses that I thought were horrific! First Nirvana, who have three (?) albums in the top 1,000, 1 on which is in the top 5, and arnt listed in the important band section. And second, John Lennon. This author lists Lou Reed (former member of Velvet Underground) and not John Lennon (former member of the Beatles) I found this distressing. But all in all this is a GREAT book, and well worth the $9.00 when you get it, you will be amazed at the extras the author packs into this tiny thing. (such as the top 50 Cd sets) Thanks! ~Andy

4 out of 5 stars lots of fun.......2000-03-07

          solid book...

nice to see all three nick drake lps listed-- disappointed that can only rated two titles, but hey that's what's fun about this...

nice to see fairport dominate the folk list and gram parson take the top three slots on the country list...

u.s. readers should be aware that that over the last 12 years or so, british and european tastes in rock music have diverged considerably from american, and those who haven't kept up will think that the book overemphasizes bands from the uk.

british groups continue to enjoy mass popularity in europe and austrlia that they no longer enjoy in the us, while many bands widely popular in the u.s. generate little interest overseas...

          this book reflects that

5 out of 5 stars A complete and thorough look at music history.......1999-08-18

So money. It covers everything one can think of and does it with so many indexes. Examples include top 50 albums by genre and top 5 albums by the 100 greatest artists. This is an awesome collection that will guide anyone to his or her music selections.

            5 out of 5 stars A Great How-To.......2005-09-23

A great book on all aspects of starting a club. This is just what some friends and I are doing now - and I am so grateful that this book is available. It serves as a step-by-step "how to". Plus, it has great information on avoiding pit-falls and keeping club life fun and interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Great Way to Get Started........2005-07-21

As usual with the 'For Dummies' books, this one takes it easy. You can read it pretty quickly, it starts out quite simply and builds slowly. You don't think you're getting as much information as you are until you've finished.

Again as usual, this book is written by a couple of people who combine personal experience with a casual relaxed writing style. (For what it's worth, I've tried writing like this and it isn't easy.)

Most of us thinking about investment clubs already have some investing experience and think that we might be able to teach the club a lot. Most of us learn that the other people in the club can teach us a lot. Investment clubs attract the advanced amateur who bring specialized knowledge, their own experience, and above all enough questions that you might have forgotten to ask to make it well worth your while.

            Great Way to Get Started.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, concise and compelling.......2004-05-17

I just got through reading a number of books on investing. I had heard of the investment club movement. I did not know much about them. This book is a gem.
True to the series, it does have a gentle learning slope; there is nothing overwhelming, no challenging concepts. But it does break down the process of starting and running a club into clear, manageable pieces. I now want to start a club!
The investment philosophy is compelling. I would certainly encourage anyone interested in starting an investment club to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Investment Clubs for Dummies: Clear, Thorough, Enjoyable.......2002-08-17

This book answered all of the questions I had about investment clubs. Written in a casual, easily accessible way, this book gave precise and detailed information about founding or finding a club.
In the book, you'll learn about what work is actually involved with club membership; tips on assembling a group of committed people to be in a club with (plus tips on how to deal with troublesome member issues); and how to find and use investment and investment club resources to learn more about investing and to help keep your club running smoothly.
Whether you are simply interested in what investment clubs are and how they work, or you are serious about starting or joining an investment club, this book is a clearly written and fun way to learn about clubs. By going through each step of starting or becoming involved with an investment club, by dissecting the language of the legal documents your club must maintain, and by providing examples of actual investment clubs, this book covers it all, and will be an invaluable resource for the life of your club.
