Beautiful book, well written and great to look at.......2007-03-24
Non-fiction biography with great color photographs on every single page; the book is worth it just for those. It is a well written biography of the father of Akenahaten. It is interesting to learn that he was dabbling in an interest in the "Aten" god cult prior to his son Akhenaten's obsession with it later on when he became sole ruler.
I recently went to a museum show of objects sent from the British museum, interestingly the majority were objects found in the pages of this book! Unbelievable to see them in real life!! A great experience.

A very nice hard-cover book with wonderful full color plates and a wealth of information concerning his intimate life, not overly concentrating on his building projects but more on his personal life.
It's worth looking through.......2001-10-05
First of all, the design of the book is exquisite; it's a pleasure to leaf through this book, full of colorful high-quality illustrations. After reading it, however, I found the content a bit disappointing, most of it was re-hashing of the fairly well-known facts, although with a few interesting tidbits sprinkled throughout. This book would be great for someone with a passing interest in Ancient Egypt, it gives a good general overview of what life might have been like during the New Kingdom.

Chronicle of a Pharaoh is a readable in-depth look at pharaoh Amenhotep III, one of the three greatest kings of ancient Egypt. The layout is superb as it chronicles his life with a year-by-year format. Contains a generous amount of personal minutae, reinforced with pictures and plates on almost every page. Outstanding in all respects, this one is a keeper.

I agree with the first reviewer--it's amazing that Joann Fletcher has pieced together so much about Amenhotep and presents it in a way that conveys an actual life. The little details, like the name of his family cat, make this book tons of fun. An all-around beautiful book.

Shavers' Book Does Not Make The "Big Time".......2005-08-01
"Welcome To The Big Time" is average boxing drivel that may please those who idolized Earnie Shavers and want to learn more about him, but for the boxing purist, this book will not stir up any more emotional reaction than perhaps a wide yawn.
Earnie Shavers was a hard hitting heavyweight of the 1970's and 80's. He mentions in his book that he had the hardest hitting right hand of anyone in the heavyweight divison. While true, that does not elevate Mr. Shavers into an "elite" heavyweight. The truth is that Shavers was a top-10 contender for the crown, and not a champion. I am not trying to take anything away from Earnie Shavers, but as a boxing enthusiast, it is my opinion that Shavers was no more than a one-punch wonder who lacked the physical conditioning to go 15 hard rounds.
OK, so what does all this have to do with Shavers' book, "Welcome To The Big Time"? - His lack of owning a true championship belt diminishes the drama of his story. In fact, there is little drama here at all. Shavers writes of his very humble beginnings and his start in boxing that really is not much different from any other black boxer. It is standard fare. Shavers' boxing career is again lacking in the drama that engages the reader's interest. Sure, he had Ali on the ropes in what is probably Shavers' biggest fight, but Ali was so far past his prime that it is more a commentary on how bad Ali was than how great Shavers was. This holds true in his two fights with Larry Holmes as well. Yes, Shavers dropped Holmes and was very close to the heavyweight crown, but again, Shavers got in his big punch and once Holmes weathered the storm, he went on to defeat Shavers handily.
Shavers writes extensively about his personal life, including his many marriages and affairs, but it is not very compelling reading. His conversion to Christianity is admirable, but again, where is the interest to the reader? Ditto to his many come-backs. Shavers, like so many other aged fighters, kept going back into the ring for the paycheck rather than a compelling reason.
I know other reviewers have rated this book higher than myself, and of course everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, the discerning reader of boxing will find nothing exciting or compelling in this book. Instead of being a book I could not put down, I was somewhat relieved to put it down when I turned the last page.

this book was very good it really showed how different boxing is today than it was mr. shavers was boxing most of the guys had day jobs except the big money people. The book talks about shavers childhood, what led him to boxing, his fights, his feelings, and his conversion to christianity. The stories he wrote were very entertaining. I think the introduction is what really hooked me in, in which he psyched out a younger fighter and knocked him out.

i had the pleasure of speaking with earnie the other night on the phone. he truly is a class act and a true gentleman. he had fights with many of the classic names of the 70s muhammad ali, larry holmes, jimmy young, ken norton, jimmy ellis, jerry quarry, roy tiger williams and many more.
he tells me he has a very successful marketing company in the states now, and suprisingly said don king was a good guy and not to believe what ' all those guys say'. we spoke about his old peers like candy slim jeff merritt whos in bad shape these days and the fearsome roy tiger williams who is now a mr nice guy and a singer with larry holmes in philly.
its great how many of these old warriors are doing okay for themselves now. best wishes to 'my mate' earnie, i cant wait to get the book of you persoanlly, i have no doubt its another classic like the books by larry holmes, joe frazier, quick tillis and george foreman.

This is an excellent book to have on hand if you are a frequent letter writer. I've learned valuable information just by skimming through the book. I recommend this book to anyone looking for information on how to correctly write a letter.

Bob Bly is well known in freelancing and copywriting circles, but his abilities probably aren't as well known outside those arenas. This book might just make him known to the average person or at least to the average business person (who in my experince usually hates having to write letters).

I bought this book for a class and had never written a grant before. I also knew absolutely nothing about the world of grant writing. Because of this book, I was able to produce a quality grant. Wason's instructions are clear and easy to follow. The examples provided offer good examples of what to do. It would have been nice to see examples of what not to do as well.
