Book Description
Childhood for Mat Hoffman was a high-flying, hazardous, nonstop search for the next big rush. At age eleven he experimented with his bike on a plywood ramp and discovered his true calling -- BMX freestyle.
By age fourteen, he had earned national notoriety for his skill, passion, and daring on a bike. In the two decades since, his ingenuity and talent have taken him around the world and helped him shatter records while redefining the sport of BMX. His fearlessness has earned him the respect of his peers, and he has the battle scars to prove it -- he's suffered more than fifty broken bones and more concussions than he can remember.
In The Ride of My Life, Hoffman reveals the ups and downs of his own life and the story of the sport he helped define.

Good Book , but ..........2007-07-04
Great book , but it has some bad language in it . I recomend it for people sixteen to thirty , not much of a kids book . I haven't finished it yet , on chapter 12 . Great for someone into extreme sports , like skateboarding , snowboarding , surfing , or BMX .
The best bmx legend of all time.......2006-03-25
Wow, what else needs to be said about Mat Hoffman? He's the godfather of pretty much everything bmx freestyle. Whether it be street, ramp, vert, big ramp whatever. Mat was busting out all the biggest and gnarliest tricks and creating this big book of tricks almost the size of your typical yellow pages book. Alot of the stuff Mat did back in the 80s and early 90s-- well it would be rare not to see any rider from today not pulling the same tricks. And he invented most of those tricks. Hell, I do alot of the tricks Mat invented haha. Let's not forget he was also the first person in the world to ever pull a 900 on a vert ramp. Even rollerbladers and skaters weren't doing 900s and their rotations are easier since they don't have the weight of a 30 lb bike between their legs.
Mat did pretty much everything on his bike. He's one of the few vert riders in the world who can probably say there's nothing left to do on his bike anymore, but that's not gonna stop him from riding.
In this book you'll read about his life on and off his bike. I don't want to get into detail here since it covers alot, but even if you don't ride bmx and are looking for something to read about somebody who pushed the limits of gravity and inspired many riders today, then add Mat Hoffman's autobiography to your list.
Let's not forget he was also the first person to pull off the flair and will probably be the only person on the entire planet to pull a no handed 900 on vert... and I'm serious about that. And I'm pretty sure no one else is gonna huck themselves 50 feet in the air being pulled from a motorcycle.
No pads, No helmets, Just balls!.......2004-11-18
One word to describe the sky flying superman of BMX.....DARING! This man has broken enough bones to have the hospitals on speed dial! Hes amazing in every way a rider living his dreams just like the others. Mat is not just a rider though hes an artist in the sky. His bike is the brush and the ramp is his canvas. He is the creater and godfather of biking today. He is like tupac, always remebered. Mat you have taught me more of how to have fun and get out their. Now i know to never get knocked down without a fight!
awsome.......2004-03-12

Gift for my brother!!.......2003-08-26
My brother, an avid BMX'er, loved this book! He's not much of a reader but I think he liked the short tidbids about Mat Hoffman. A great gift idea for the cyclist in your life.

Big Yellow Taxi.......2006-12-19
The authors, friends of Pete and Toshi Seeger, have a rhythmic, musical writing style that captures perfectly the hustle-ly bustle of New York City, and the mosaic of people, places, and cityscapes that make it so vibrant. There's no plot, really, it's more of a Gershwin-esque paean to New York and what is sometimes the best way to travel through it-the taxi:
A bus is fine, but it sticks to a line.
That's okay if you've got the time.
A train is a treat, but it's stuck on a track.
That's a drag if you're late to get back.
A car is quick but you;ve got to park it.
A bike Is cool but you;ve got to lock it.
Scattered through the pictures are snippets of dialogue ("TAXI!," "hey," WHOA"), as people hail one of the "more than 12,000" taxis in the city. AS entertaining and fun to read as the book is, it's also engagingly informative, both about taxis and about the sights and sounds of New York. The taxis take us (over jig-jagging streets, huge bridges, and waiting in traffic jams) to Jazz clubs, the Empire State Building, Coney Island, the theatre district, and Greenwich Village.
From the Lower East to the Upper West.
Ride to the Side you like the best.
From Washington Heights to Brooklyn Heights,
Climb on in and see the sights.
MOMA! SOHO! NOHO! DUMBO!
All around our New York town!
We might go fast. We might go slow.
Ready or not, here we go!
Selina Alko's collages add immeasurably to the fun and complement the fun urban atmosphere that authors Jacobs and Swender establish so well. She incorporates crossword puzzle templates, art deco, a street map that slightly recalls "Monopoly" with interspersed child-like pictures, and other interesting patterns and perspectives (although I think the Empire State Building might have shown more grandeur; unfortunately, the picture inside the book is not as dramatic as the cover illustration.) Alko has a fascinating visual style, at times she flattens the streets and signs into one dimension so that we see them simultaneously; it's almost a combo of cubism and Rauschenberg. The authors and illustrator navigate this territory like an accomplished cab driver; it's a wonderful, kids will love this energetic book.

Book Description
Award-winning columnist Terry Marotta's newest title contains 52 very-short, true-life stories, one for each week of the year. Thus, winter's chapters treat winter themes (the lovely post-holiday hush; the way your family goes south expressly to escape winter's afflictions and ends up in the ER anyway, everyone fizzing with fever.) Spring's pieces have tales of longing (the 12-year-old's greedy suggestion that the Easter Bunny should maybe just bring money "say a couple of $20s per kid.") Summer has its own adventures, such as the story of Camp Grownup, when the kids are actually out of the house briefly, and autumn's sparkle with that starting- over feeling (though not everything starts over, as the elegiac piece pinned to September's second week testifies.)
All that blossoms must one day fade, as we well know, and this book reflects that truth - but joyfully. It ends in the year's last week, on the sort of balmy day that leads us to hope that whatever Death - or Winter - takes from us now will, one day, be restored again.

good medicine.......2003-03-27
I love the brief essays in Terry's book. I use them to help me get a quick good therapy, perspective, attitude of gratitude, smiles, laughs, warm fuzzies, -- its a lot better than watching the news w/ my morning coffee! Terry is magic, good hearted, and a great writer. She describes her experiences without self-centeredness and makes the reader feel good about themselves and their time spent w/ the book, vacationing!

An exquisite artist of language.......2002-09-22
Terry Marotta's use of words and language in this book is so exquisite that her phrases catapult you to familiar images. I found myself saying "Yes, that is exactly what that looks like. Yes, I know that feeling exactly." Her fine use of words paint pictures that were delightful. And her handling of everyday life and subjects was fun, at times funny, but always respectful. Having read this book, I am buying it as Christmas gifts for others who love the fine craft of words and I am getting a second of her works for myself!
Funny, moving, delightful, and occasionally entrancing.......2002-06-08
Written by syndicated columnist Terry Marotta, Vacationing In My Driveway is a collection of 52 special columns, one relating to every week in the year, about topics ranging from religious devotion to learning to relax and enjoy life. Funny, moving, delightful, and occasionally entrancing, these vignettes are like popcorn - reading one only makes you want to read more. Vacationing In My Driveway is highly recommended reading for Terry's legions of fans, and will well serve to introduce her particular brand of wit, wisdom, and observation to those not yet familiar with her writings.

Customer Reviews:
An inspiring reading experience.......2004-03-25
I found "My Ride to a New Life" a great reading experience. I read the book over two days; it's a very fast read. Michelle's inspiring story had deep meaning for me. Her courage and brave sense of adventure in undertaking two long solo bike/camping trips far away from her home were inspiring. Her day-to-day account of her experiences on the road made for fascinating reading. Her openness to new people and experiences made this an exceptional memoir.
The last portion of Michelle's book was an account of her meeting with her future husband and was a beautiful and romantic love story.
I would highly recommend this book to everyone.
Like the work of all great writers, I was sorry to see this book end. I'm looking forward to future books by Michelle.
deep intuition as guide.......2004-03-25
Deeper levels of intuition can be very dynamic and life-changing. A French woman uproots her secure and established life in France, following something unknown that her heart must find. A powerful little book. There is a level of intuition being listened to here, and at play, both in her life and in her writing -- a level that is strong, unusual and profound. This book has changed my life. Following such intuition brings a new kind of potency to living.
Michelle is, as she says, not a great intellectual, but this can be refreshing. It is refreshing. There is something innocent, naive, and direct speaking in her. Like the smile of a young child, this book speaks a different language -- one of innocence, simplicity and open honesty. There can be a different kind of power in something that is pure and untutored.
One other aspect of the book: it seems unfinished or incomplete; but that may be the nature of such a journey. Her intuition seemed to be pointing her or leading her to something even higher than what she found toward the end of the book (though what she found was very surprising and quite good). Maybe it developed further, and probably it did; perhaps she followed, or is continuing to follow that depth of intuition, and it is continuing to take her even further.
Amazing Search.......2003-03-13
Michelle tells an intimate story of her search for self via travel. She ventures to North America to cycle...something she has never attempted before. It certainly is an adventure and in the end, there is a nice surprise. Many touring cyclists or those that would like to cycle tour can relate to her thoughts and observations. In Michelle's own words, she delivers her revelations and thoughts in a quaint English which adds to the books unique character.
It's a great read! Try it.
A Personal Journey.......2003-02-27
I've been a cyclist for the past fourteen years. During that time, I've read many books and articles about the subject. While I've enjoyed these, I come away with a sense that all too often the authors have missed the point of cycling, getting entangled in the technical aspects of the experience.
Michelle Sicard seems to have found the essence of cycling in "My Ride to a New Life", and it's not about the gear, or the technical details. Michelle starts her journey from a personal point of view as someone discontent with the never-altered structure of her existence, discovering a whole new life in the process.
The story is told about the journey, but unfolds with personal glimpses and insights around each corner. This is the true essence of cycling, the inner journey, the unexpected. In the end the book is more about self-discovery than the journey itself. As every true cyclist knows, the experience will transform you more than you ever expected, as it did Michelle.
A New Life in America.......2003-02-20
I would love to travel long distances on my bike, but I haven't had the nerve to do it alone as Michelle did. I'm afraid I couldn't fix my bike and would be stranded. But I like to read about the experience of others just to remind myself about the myriad of bad possibilities that could spoil my fun. Weather, poorly paved roads and steep hills are some of the challenges Michelle meets.
I am amazed at all the details she remembered to write down. Apparently she entered comments in her diary every night.
The book is fascinating and reads quickly. Take that from somebody who hardly reads anything but the newspaper or magazines.
I don't want to tell you the ending of this true story, but it's enough to make a single woman get out on her bike and try a ride alone.

Funny and Fascinating.......2004-03-26
Shortly before his passing, Pencer put together this account of his life. His roller coaster business career in Montreal, Calgary and Toronto was truly fascinating. The story is spiced with candor and humour.
Particularly memorable are two episodes in which he recounts 'potentializing' during business negotiations, to great $ effect.
Also very interesting is the substantial content devoted to Pencer's relations with "Mr. President's Choice", Dave Nicol, formerly of the Loblaw grocery empire.
For those of you still unsure who Pencer was, do you remember Financial Trust? How about Cott?
After reading the book, I'm sorry I never had the opportunity to meet this most dynamic man.

Written for the artist new to 3ds max, 3ds max 4 in Depth presents the application from the ground up, starting with interface basics and continuing on through project construction to final rendering.
Overall, the book presents much of the same information in the manuals, although it uses more examples and screen shots, and the authors write with a more open voice. The enclosed CD-ROM includes all the project files and source material needed for the exercises in the book, and the color plate gallery offers some inspiring images.
Twenty-one chapters divided into six parts open up 3ds max 4 in Depth in a way that any beginner can understand. "The Big Picture" and "Working in Max" offer overviews of the computer graphics field and how Max works, while "Modeling," "Materials and Textures," "Lights, Camera, Render," and "Animation" offer specific chapters on their respective topics.
A favorite chapter, "Working Smart," closes the second section. It includes information not normally found in books of the genre, such as modeling using instancing and clones, using the Mirror and Snapshot tools, aligning objects, and other tips and tricks for working efficiently. Analyzing scenes and objects using tools like Summary Info, ideal for determining where to trim scenes or alter models, is also covered.
This is a thorough and understandable book, lacking only in-depth information on Max's programming language, MAXScript, which is worthy of a book of its own. For artists new to 3ds max 4, and especially those new to 3ds max, 3ds max 4 in Depth makes a fine handbook and addition to a powerful program. --Mike Caputo

Customer Reviews:
The book........2005-01-06
3DS Max 4 In Depth is a book that I feel no serious artist working with 3DS Max should have -- even if they are working with a later version. While the tools shown in this book are refined and their locations moved, the descriptions of their use that you find within this book is priceless.
This is not a pleasure book, nor is it a "cookbook". You won't find the magic numbers that will create a low-poly character in here. What you will find is knowledge if you have the patience to read it. When I first learned 3D -- using 3DS Max 4 -- I began with this book, and I simply treated it as a textbook, reading measured amounts of it every day until I was done.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Even if you are an advanced user, it is likely that this book has something to tell you.
Wonderful learning aid for beginners.......2002-07-29
I found this book tremendously useful when I first started out using 3ds max. Of course, that was in it's previous max 3 incarnation, but it's usefulness to me has not diminshed. I teach 3d modeling classes at a technical college and I recommend this text to students who are looking for something more extensive then thier provided textbook, 3ds max 4 Fundamental Coursewares. While that book is quite useful in the tutorial respect, this book gives a more textbook reference approach to the subject. The book begins with the basics, things such as primative modeling and transform modifiers and builds from there into polygonal modeling, patch modeling and NURBS. Sections are well planned out and useful to me as a reference and teaching aid. Also, I found the sections about materials and track animation superb. I recommend this book to anyone who is starting in 3ds max or even to those that have used it for a while as a reference.
Hard to follow if your new.......2002-05-17
Im brand new to the 3d world. I had no clue how 3ds max 4 worked at all. I was clueless about what book to buy but for some reason i coose this one. I have only had it for a few weeks but it is so hard to follow its quite frustrating to use. Now it might just be a hard program to use but the book leads you though but you spend a lot of time looking for buttons, finding shapes and not really sure what the book wants you to do after you find it. I dont know if all the books are like this but i sure hope not. I just want to do fun stuff and it doesnt really look like the book even shows you how to. But im just in the begining so i have no ideas. Do you have an idea of a better book that wont take forever to lean? It looks quite exclusive in some of its progrmas. It needs to be shaped for the newbe in the beging of the book. I have spend hours with this book and got no were. You have to much dissifing to do.
Stuff you can use in a way you can understand.......2002-04-06
If you're looking for specific tutorials to get the more out of specific tools in MAX this may not be the book for you. But if you are like me and just entering the 3D graphics field, this book is invaluable. In Depth has goes into the subtle nuance of 3DS MAX that you won't find in other books or tutorials. It explains the means to the end. Rather then teaching a specific goal, it gives you comprehensive knowledge of MAX that you can apply your 3d scenes. You may not end up with a nifty 'hey-look-at-what-can-be-made-in-max' scene, but you'll have an comprhensive understanding of the tools and how to apply it to any scene. Basically you learn what the hell all the features are and how the hell to use them. It gives you an 'in depth' comprehensive knowledge of said features to apply to a broad ranges of situations rather than a way to use whatever tool to apply to a situation you may never even encounter. I think it's my best peice of reference I have on my shelf, but if you already have a fairly good understanding of all the features of 3D with MAX it may not be worth the investment. I can almost gurantee you'll learn SOMETHING you didn't know, but if you're already very experienced it may not be worth the overhead. To sum it up, if you're new to 3D and to MAX this book will teach you all the skills you need to be cool, but people with a fairly extensive knowledge may want to look to more specialized book specific to your needs. However, if you've got the money to spare there's at least something in there for you.

Good persuasion tool for managers.......2007-05-18
This is not the best media skills book on the market, especially if you are working with volunteer or advocacy groups who need things broken down more simply and visually. However, it covers the basics and works well as an academic "bible" if you need to convince peers or management to adopt new tactics. Every PR pro can whine for hours about clients and bosses who don't want to grasp the importance of identifying goals and target audiences before jumping into the tactics. (Too many people think seeing a news clip or their name in the paper is success, even if it doesn't really help advance their cause.) This book gives a good overview for managers seeking an understanding of strategy and is a "valid" source when pros are making the case to be more strategic when developing a media plan so that organizations can win.
Excellent book for beginners in non-profit PR.......2004-08-11
I use this book to teach a beginning workshop in public relations for non-profit organizations as part of a continuing education program at a local community college. The book is an excellent resource for individuals who are not familar with public relations. It takes the reader through all of the things that he or she will need to do to effectively promote his or her organization.
Quite Useful for Students.......2002-08-21
The Jossey-Bass Guide to Strategic Communications for Nonprofits is a detailed examination of the relationship between nonprofits and the media. As the title says, it provides a step-by-step guide for nonprofits to establish effective relations with the media that result in publicity. My professor recommended this book to me, and I'm finding it quite useful. It has a similar approach to Guerrilla PR: Wired by Michael Levine; both are about maximizing your return on investment.
I especially enjoyed this book because I'm thinking about working for a nonprofit after graduation, and I haven't seen anywhere near as much about public relations and publicity for nonprofits as I've seen for corporations.
