Book Description
Dissing Elizabeth focuses on the criticism that cast a shadow on the otherwise celebrated reign of Elizabeth I. The essays in this politically and historically revealing book demonstrate the sheer pervasiveness and range of rhetoric against the queen, illuminating the provocative discourse of disrespect and dissent that existed over an eighty-year period, from her troubled days as a princess to the decades after her death in 1603.
As editor Julia M. Walker suggests, the breadth of dissent considered in this collection points to a dark side of the Cult of Elizabeth. Reevaluating neglected texts that had not previously been perceived as critical of the queen or worthy of critical appraisal, contributors consider dissent in a variety of forms, including artwork representing (and mocking) the queen, erotic and pornographic metaphors for Elizabeth in the popular press, sermons subtly critiquing her actions, and even the hostility encoded in her epitaph and in the placement of her tomb. Other chapters discuss gossip about Elizabeth, effigies of the queen, polemics against her marriage to the Duke of Alençon, common verbal slander, violence against emblems of her authority, and the criticism embedded in the riddles, satires, and literature of the period.
Customer Reviews:
"Dissing" Clarifies "Blazoning".......2000-08-21
This book puts a useful perspective on the cult of Elizabeth I. During her own reign (1568-1603) she was praised to her face for her brilliance and lauded in the courtly terms of the day, but certainly resented and "dissed" by the ambitious men she frustrated. Although numerous poets praised her, blazing her beauty, brilliance, and blessedness as God's Protestant champion, other men resented her and tried to find a way to destroy the culture of devotion she inspired and encouraged.
The book itself respects Elizabeth a great deal, but expands usefully the context in which she was seen in her own time and immediately thereafter. A very fine and useful collection, certainly for scholars, but also for anyone interested in the Elizabethan period.

Undissing Dissing Elizabeth.......2000-08-18
Walker's collection of essays is innovative but mainstream Renaissance scholarship, aimed not at settling biographical arguments about Elizabeth's life (in fact the books many distinguished essayists accept what virtually all historians believe about Elizabeth I--even the open-minded doubt that she was stupid enough to risk real intercourse with a lover) but at showing that not everybody in Tudor England worshipped her uncritically. Some, implicitly or--when it was safe--explicitly had criticisms to make and could wish for a different monarch. What I admire about this book, aside from the fascinating evidence that its writers adduce, much of which will come as news even to Renaissance scholars, is the cleverness of Walker's basic idea (a refreshing change from the usual "cult of Elizabeth"). It matters that not everybody thought Elizabeth a fairy queen, a Gloriana, a new Diana. Tudor politics and culture were complex, and Walker's team of writers can show this. I especially recommend the Tudor picture of Elizabeth as a giant ruffed bird. Ugh! So buy this book: it is clever, informative, often amusing, is based on meticulus scholarship, and has that wonderful bird. As the editor of a Renaissance journal (Spenser Studies), a member of the board of the Renaissance Society of America, and the author of two books, one edition, and two anthologies all dealing with the Renaissance I do know what I'm talking about. This is a fine collection. I give it four stars--reserving five for the Bible and Shakespeare.
The Virgin Queen Defended.......2000-07-14
This series of essays shines no new light on the character and history of Queen Elizabeth I. Rather it simply repackages the Virgin Queen and the cult of Queen Elizabeth in the contemporary garb of feminist rhetoric.
The voluminous evidence that Elizabeth had an active love affair with Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, is off handedly dismissed. The substantial amount of circumstantial evidence that Queen Elizabeth was a co-conspirator in the murder of Amy Robsart, Robert Dudley's wife is brushed aside by labeling it "the mysterious death of Dudley's wife" and then giving the hearsay comment, "though modern historians consider it most unlikely that Robert Dudley with or without the connivance of Elizabeth. Nor can we ever know the exact nature of Elizabeth's relationship with him."
This last statement is such a blatant distortion of the historical record that it can only be considered a deliberate falsehood. Contemporary Elizabethan accounts of Elizabeth and Robert Dudley indicate that Elizabeth was deeply in love with Robert Dudley, that she lived with openly at court sharing adjoining apartments, she entrusted him as Lord Protector of England when she was stricken by small pox and she mourned him at this death in 1588. Admitting that Elizabeth was deeply in love and involved with Robert Dudley would support gossip of the time that she bore children by him. This distortion of the historical record is necessary to keep intact the myth of the Virgin Queen.
There is simply no exhaustive inquiry into one of the most enigmatic questions of Elizabethan history: "Did Elizabeth have children?" This book does not further the inquiry an iota.
The Thomas Seymour affair of 1548 as presented in this book is another distortion of the historical record. Elizabethan historians have approached this matter by muting the facts, presenting various bits of the story in various books and then concluding that while Elizabeth may have been indiscreet, nothing of substance happened. In fact the historical record indicates that Elizabeth was "sick" in the summer of 1548 and there are substantive circumstances to indicate that Princess Elizabeth, age fourteen, gave birth to a child who was raised as Edward de Vere, 17th Earl of Oxford a.k.a. William Shakespeare.
"Dissing Elizabeth, Negative Representations of Gloriana" is inadequately titled. In order to fully describe its contents the title should continue "And A Stouthearted Defense of the Cult of Elizabeth and the Virgin Queen."
While there are many interesting facts and observations contained in these essays, they have to be sifted out from the bowdlerizing of one of the most fascinating, controversial and influential woman of the western world. Hopefully, there will someday be an adequate biography of this complex woman, but these essays certainly don't head in that direction.

Tenzing Norgay and the Sherpas of Everest
ASIN: 0792269837
Release Date: 2003-03-01 |
Book Description
In 1953, Tenzing Norgay was at the heart of the successful British Everest expedition as leader of the Sherpas whose hard work brought victory and as one of the two lead climbers to reach the top. But behind Tenzing's radiant smile is an untold story of courage, tragedy, and ambition, of a man who overcame incredible odds just to reach the bottom of the mountain.
Born in a sacred Tibetan valley in the shadow of Everest, Tenzing's long journey led him from life as an illiterate yak herder to become the friend of Nehru, feted by monarchs and presidents all over the world. Set against the backdrop of one of the greatest chapters in the history of exploration, Tenzing: Hero of Everest recounts the jubilant moments at the summit: Tenzing was effusive, putting an arm around Hillary's shoulders, and thumping him on the back with infectious delight. Hillary joined in.... Now all below them...the valleys where Tenzing had grown up. `It was such a sight as I had never seen before,' he said, `and would never see againwild, wonderful, and terrible. But terror was not what I felt. I loved the mountains too well for that. I loved Everest too well.'
Mountaineering historian Ed Douglas reveals for the first time Tenzing's long climb from obscurity. Drawing on extensive interviews with family members, climbing partners, and members of the Sherpa community in Darjeeling and Nepal, the book chronicles his rise to fame and the aftermath of his triumph. The result is a wealth of new material about a man who made his people famous and whose life was the stuff of legend.
Customer Reviews:
The most in-depth accont ever of Tenzing's climb from obscurity to stardom .......2007-05-26
In this thoughtful, well researched and educational book, Ed Douglas has delved far beneath the superficial surface of Tenzing, Sherpas and Himalayan climbing. The history and lead up to the 1953 climb with Ed Hillary is both thoughtful and highly detailed but despite the incredible academic depth and factual information, this book is highly readable and appealing to anyone who seeks knowledge of Tenzing's extraordinary beginnings in Tibet, move to Nepal and settling in Darjeeling to be close to the action for all pre world war 2 expeditions to the Everest region. Douglas's accurate descriptions of some of these early expeditions to Everest and other high peaks make "Into Thin Air" look like a church picnic. Most of all we get a true picture of life as a Sherpa rising to Sirdar status and what singled out Tenzing from all the others. This is a human story complete with all the highs and lows of struggle, family, ambition, success and failure, with eventual world accolade diminishing into depressiion, loneliness and frustration. This is a book that every interested world mountaineer should read. It finally puts into perspective what went on during those amazing decades from the 20s to the 70s.
history lesson.......2004-06-25
When I purchased this book I thought that I was going to receive a thrilling biography of the first ascent of MT. Everest. But instead I got a history lesson on the culture, area, and Tenzing's family. I had a hard time staying awake through the beginning and the end of the book. The middle kept me going while Everest was being climbed. The writing was fine. It just was not exciting. So if you are writing a paper for you college history class, check out this book. If you want an exciting mountaineering book, look somewhere else.
The Hero of Everest Without the Heart and Soul.......2003-06-13
Thorough, informative and well authenticated but wholly lacking in literary style and readability. As I read the book I thought "with all this information a good editor and the benefit of literary style could have vastly improved the effort!" In reading the book I did discover that I am an unswerving 'linear reader'. No matter how bad the writing became I remained steadfast to the end hoping that this book could redeem itself. This effort will not be seriously considered a notable contribution to the history of climbing Everest. For that sort of book I recommend reading elsewhere.
Lost In The Details.......2003-04-14
One has to commend Ed Douglas for this, a highly scholarly and thorough look at the life of a very enigmatic and difficult character. One is left in no doubt that he has thoroughly researched and cross referenced his sources in order to provide this highly detailed portrait.
Yet this book's main failings may just be this tremendous detail. Whilst an ethnographer would no doubt be fascinated with the complex social, religious and family structures of Himalayan life I doubt many readers would be as interested. Douglas lays out Tenzing's story with the cold accuracy of an experienced climber calmly looking for his next hold. Unfortunately this accuracy translates into a cool detachment from the subjects in question. Non mountaineers will find themselves grasping at their own handholds as Douglas assumes both a knowledge of climbing and an intimacy with Everest from his readers. For example, he references the South Col numerous times, yet no where is this feature of the mountain illustrated or explained to us. A good atlas of the Himalayan region is needed by any prospective reader to begin to understand much of Tenzing's expeditions and I think it is inexcusable for a book of this nature not to include such maps and diagrams.
Works on explorers and exploration should contain a wealth of detail but they also need to transcend that information and deliver a passionate portrait of the characters involved. Hero of Everest's textbook-like narrative delivers in the former but is sadly lacking in the latter.

Managerial Statistics Text book.......2006-11-03
It was the text book the professor wanted me to buy.
It was good.
Sanjay Chheda.......2006-10-06
The book is very good with really good explanations and examples on descriptive analysis and inferential analysis.
Better Title: Intro to Statistics using Excel Add-ins.......2001-06-04
On the positive side, this book has many excellent case studies and examples. It is well written and interesting. However, I was disappointed, as I was expecting use of Excel to rigorously solve decision making and data analysis problems. The focus of the book is mostly traditional statistics solved using a group of commercial add-ins for Excel. If this is what you want, then the book would get five stars. However, for data analysis and decision making, I think a more thorough treatment using Excel without relying so much on the add-ins would have been appropriate.
Serious Excel 2000 Problem.......2001-04-12
The text book is great. I have many of Winston's other books and they are all great. The Palisade stuff works just fine. However, the StatPro Addin that accompanies this text does not work with MS Excel 2000. I contacted the IT guy that the authors directed me to--he was stumped. He just gave up and suggested I return my book for a refund because he could not figure out it out. Again, the book is great but the StatPro Addin sucks!
No trouble with Excel.......2001-01-31
I find the text and software a useful set of tools. It assumes familiarity with basic statistics and Excel, and builds on them to develop a powerfull ability to analize data and make decisions from it. I experienced no trouble with the software install or operation.

Customer Reviews:
Challenging Textbook, full of practical Excel techniques.......2004-12-01
Best for an MBA textbook or very dedicated self-study for quantitatively oriented business analysts. You learn a lot of Excel skills and how to produce practical tables, charts and other exhibits in Excel.
Using traditional statistical software such as SAS, SPSS, Statistica, etc. makes the teaching and learning simpler. Using specialized software is the way to go if you are going to learn heavy-duty statistics (PhD research or Stats major). However, if you are an MBA student, you probably will not have access to specialized statistical software, since the jobs for which that is cost-justified generally are staffed by stats majors. Thus, learning to do a great analysis job using Excel is beneficial in the job-market "afterlife".
This book isn't an "easy read," as you will need to work carefully *all* the examples to really understand what is going on, especially with the early chapters. A common problem is skimming over the examples, then running into a wall in later chapters. If you really study the heck out of each example, things seem to go well. The book comes with the data files for all the examples. The instructor's edition comes with excellent solutions for all the problems. The author really knows how to make Excel do anything!
I earned an MBA many years ago from a top ten MBA program and worked in business after that, including owning my own business. Later I returned to school for a phd degree and now teach stats in a b-school.
Waste of Money.......2004-10-24
I am using this book for a MBA class at a Top 20 school. Our class is focused on students who have not had any formal background in statistics. This book lacks in depth explanations for its problems. Its solutions manual is marginally helpful because it also does not explain how it reaches the answers.
Granted this book is mean to be used with excel, but it relies too much on Excel to do the computation. Thus the student is limited in building a strong basis in statistics.
Unfortunately, my whole MBA class is going through is agony with this book.
