Recently, we have seen England's venerable Queen Elizabeth I portrayed in popular movies as both a wise supporting character and powerful leading lady. Now, thanks to historian and author Alan Axelrod, we can not only see the 16th-century monarch as a single woman who turned the fortunes of an entire nation around--we can apply many of the traits and practices of Good Queen Bess to our own business lives. "You can learn that being a leader is being a leader, whether your enterprise is a Renaissance kingdom, a small business, a major corporation, a corporate department, or a three-person work group with a job to do," Axelrod writes in Elizabeth I, CEO. Like other authors who relate the conduct and writings of a historical figure to situations in the modern world (including himself in Patton on Leadership), Axelrod uses Elizabeth's behavior and words to frame a blueprint for corporate survival, personal image building, staff development, control, and--ultimately--success. The author draws 136 pointers from Elzabeth's life, each amplified with lively, germane anecdotes. Among them: "Control the Message, not the Messenger," "No Leader Is a Solo Act," and "Forgive, but Don't Forget." --Howard Rothman

Book Description

Last year, Alan Axelrod used General George S. Patton's WW II experiences as the basis for his national bestseller Patton on Leadership. This year, Dr. Axelrod turns to one of history's greatest rulers, and greatest women, for a fresh look at the always-compelling topic of how to lead people to extraordinary achievement. Elizabeth I, CEO: Strategic Lessons in Leadership from the Woman Who Built an Empire reveals how the embattled monarch overcame daunting obstacles to win intense loyalty and lead England to greatness. Elizabeth I, CEO will attract the leaders of today, the builders of contemporary empires, as well as history-lovers. The life of Elizabeth has much to say to those beginning their climb up the corporate ladder as well those who, having attained the top rung, do not want to slip from it. The queen's long reign offers lessons on: Developing a leadership attitude and image, enhanced by personal dynamism Becoming an effective coach and mentor, skilled at nurturing creativity Manipulating others--subtly and ethically Knowing and anticipating the "enemy" Setting clear goals and motivating others to work to achieve them Most of all, the career of Elizabeth I is an example of vision, of creating vision, of communicating vision, and of realizing vision. Not only did she create loyalty among those nearest her, she met headlong an array of the most daunting challenges any leader has ever faced.

How did Elizabeth meet these challenges, managing not only to stay alive and to keep her imperiled nation afloat, but also to win the intense loyalty of her people and to lead England to greatness? Historians and biographers have offered many explanations. Elizabeth, CEO takes a fresh view, exploring issues that are relevant to leaders--especially business leaders--of today.

4 out of 5 stars A very good retrofit strategy..........2006-08-18

While I don't believe that Elizabeth was totally the excellent strategizer, I do believe she was well advised and did her own thinking. This book goes back and imposing upon historical events the decisions made by Elizabeth-I and how it would apply in business today. There are certain parallels between a monarchy and corporation that do fit together and can be seen in examples. The major portion of the book covers the image that Elizabeth set forth by taking on being the image of the Mother Mary (Catholic church) to her subjects, thus, to make the people more accepting of the new Church of England as the religious seat of power, thus diffusing the Vatican's hold over the people. My only complaint, like others opinions, there were no mention of where things went wrong, only highlighting the good things. This is a very good book still and I recommend it along with another book called Big Chief Elizabeth (which is more of the history of the new World and Elizabeth's funding of the voyages to capture more land).

3 out of 5 stars Before Thatcher there was Elizabeth the First.......2006-04-16

It was a woman who gave birth to the British Empire where the sun (son) never set on England's territory. None other than the Virgin Queen herself, who bore no heir, but lived to a very ripe old age. In her time, Elizabeth turned around her country from bankruptcy and discord. The book takes snippets from her life and there are some gems of wisdom from Elizabeth's reign. Like her father, Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth the First lived large and had the courage to be powerful, was an orphaned Princess who ascended to the throne and a nation in tatters ... and whose life was a testament that resulted in Rule Britannia until the last colony, Hong Kong, was relinquished in 1997.

But if you really need lessons from a Monarch: read Margaret Thatcher's own words on her ascent. First hand knowledge is the most useful.

5 out of 5 stars Wow Elizabeth.......2004-11-15

Elizabeth I CEO was a wonderful reading that inspired me a lot. It is one of those books that you hate to leave unfinished. The lessons of Elizabeths leadership are compelling and quite inspiring.

I never thought that I would need a book on inspiration in my life, but this book indeed changed this view as well.

Excellent work.

5 out of 5 stars in a response..........2004-11-03

I do have a comment on history content, in response to one of other reviews I read -let's keep in mind that, if it wasn't for Elizabeth I there would be no empire to pass along to James I-England would be swallowed up by either France or Spain. Surely, Elizabeth I made a few mistakes like every other monarch, but they fade out in comparison to her achievements. She truly did build an empire, and serves as a great example of a true leader.

1 out of 5 stars Poor rendition of history leads to not-so-useful conclusions.......2004-03-09

This book is a follow-up to Axelrod's book on leadership lessons for executives drawn from the example of George S. Patton. Here, he's picked another historical figure, Queen Elizabeth I of England. This had the makings of a potentially valuable book, save for the slight problem that the history is so poorly rendered that little of value can be gleaned for anyone facing the unrelenting pressures of running an actual business.

Axelrod portrays the Elizabethan period with such rose-coloured glasses that he fails to impart a useful or realistic message here. The book has numerous references to the queen's fiscal management of the country, to the Spanish Armada, to the outpouring of literature of Shakespeare and his fellow masters of the pen, with little bits of wisdom relayed in the process. All well and good.

But in recognising and deriving lessons from the queen's many undoubted successes, he should have been balanced and also discussed where things went wrong. There is scant if any attention paid to Elizabeth's policy in Ireland, which had a particularly bloody legacy and in which England's undertakings gave rise to failure at every turn from the 1570s onward. The consequences of this policy failure are still with us today. Nor is there mention of England's military defeats against Spain after the Armada, which devastated English plans to settle the new world and gain control of trade routes. Nor does Axelrod note the cases of financial mismanagement and corruption that plagued Elizabeth's reign in the late 1500s. And where is this empire he talks about in the book's title, "the leader who built an empire"? Axelrod skips the specifics on this because there was no empire by the time King James I succeeded Elizabeth in the early 1600s. England would not have an empire to speak of for another 150 years.

There is nothing wrong or unexpected about these setbacks in Elizabeth's reign-- she had many successes and, like any monarch, some missteps as well. If one wishes to use such a monarch as an example for a business, it is a disservice to readers to trumpet the successes while ignoring the failures. What business, after all, turns in profitable quarters with every fiscal year and pleases its investors and even competitors with its every move? You'd be hard-pressed to find any such firm gracing the pages of the Wall Street Journal. Real businesses learn from their failures as much as their successes, and Axelrod has denied his readers a valuable example by focussing too much on the latter and too little on the former. This book would be more valuable with a little more depth and a little more perspective in its treatment of its historical subject.

The compelling story of America's most loved Olympic champion

"Since winning an Olympic silver medal in 1994, Street has been the most interesting personality in a sport desperately lacking for charisma. The story she tells is an entertaining portrait of her eccentricities, insecurities, mindboggling crashes, and triumphs."Philip Hersh, Chicago Tribune

"Nothing to Hide offers an interesting insight into the world of big-time ski racing."John Meyer, Denver Post

"Once you read Street's new autobiography, you understand how she did it . . . even a fraction of her life would make for an interesting story."David King, San Antonio Express-News

Picabo: Nothing to Hide is powerful, honest autobiography. Picabo Street shares her coming-of-age experience, revealing how adversity shaped a rebellious tomboy into a champion athlete and compassionate woman, in harmony with her family and at peace with her fear of failure.

"In this powerful, honest autobiography, Street shares her coming-of-age experience, revealing how adversity shaped a rebellious tomboy into a champion athlete and compassionate woman, in harmony with her family and at peace with her fear of failure. Here, for the first time, Street addresses the pressures exerted on her by her ski sponsors that may have been partly to blame for her terrible crash; the scandals surrounding the Salt Lake City Olympic Committee; and how she overcame a lengthy, debilitating depression. In the tradition of Lance Armstrong's It's Not About the Bike and Greg Louganis's Breaking the Surface, Picabo: Nothing to Hide is a poignant, intimate account of a woman forced to rebuild herself body, mind, and soul."

          1 out of 5 stars Too self-absorbed.......2006-01-22

I'm sorry this book did nothing for me....A hero? An inspiration? I can not understand how people idolize her...a young man who lives down the street from me who served time in Iraq recently....he's a real hero and inspiration. Picabo Street is another one of those, cookie-cutter, self absorbed athletes who thinks the world revolves around them. Good luck to her...but she'll never have my respect.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting lady from an interesting childhood.......2005-05-13

I love stories of unique people and how they got where they are and this one doesnt disappoint in the least. It takes this gutsy young woman from childhood through accidents and challenges and while you may not like her you'll respect her for her guts and tenacity. She may not be an honor winning girl scout but she gets my vote for teaching us how to succeed. Worth your time.

          3 out of 5 stars Meeting Fear.......2003-03-18

Though I am an intermediate-level skier, I did not know much about ski racing before reading this book. If you don't know much about racing--how the races differ, what each demands, how skiers approach each type--you will learn a few things, but not many.

Of course, Street is not your typical skiers, either in ability or attitude. Simply put, even through multiple crashes (and even through blowing out a knee) and trips to the hospital, she did not "know fear" until the massive crash that occured shortly after the 1998 Olympics.

The book details her sporting, social, and family life in rural Idaho as a child, her races, rise to media stardom, and her various stints at rehabilitation. Through it all, we see a brash person looking for the next rush of adreneline, and the next victory. She accounts not only races, but conflicts with family, team members, and (eventually) employees. Her exploration of the world of being a Nike celebrity (design your own shoe) was an unexpected bonus.

I wish that she had waited to write this book until after the 2002 Olympics. After shattering one leg and tearing out the knee of the other, and the subsequent grueling rehabilitation, merely making the team was quite a feat. I would have liked to know what she thought of it all, though.

One weakness of the book is repetition--the word "ass" must have been used, on average, every other page. I don't faint at the sight of vulgarity, but a good writer finds ways around using the same word, especially a semi-vulgar one, over and over. The style, as you would expect from a "jock book," isn't always smooth or deep, but it offers just enough insight to make for an interesting read during the off-season.

          5 out of 5 stars Go Peak!.......2002-05-03

Picabo not only makes a sublime skier but also a sublime author! This is really great book!Remember my name because one day I will race at the Olympics.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a true good source to meet Picabo.......2002-01-03

I loved this book right from the biggining.
I live in Chile and love skiing. Picabo comes sometimes on her summer to train on Chile and its just the greatest to see her training.
What I love about her is that she is a very authentic person and says just what she is thinking.
It seems to me that she has had a blast in her life, gone places, met people, won medals, campaign for Nike, etc.
Also, she is my same age , and so it is always interesting to see what others girls like me can do.

2 out of 5 stars Good Idea, Could Have Been a Magazine Article.......2007-05-13

I am a financial planner and am aware that Bacharach's book is often recommended to sales professionals in the financial services industry. I think the basic idea of the book - values-based selling - is one that works and is to be commended to sales people in the business. However, I thought the book never went much beyond the basic idea. To me, it was a "fluff" read. The ideas that one needs to take from the book could have been summed in a ten page magazine article, making the book, at $35, not much of a value. I recommend Nick Murray's "The Excellent Investment Adviser" and Neil Rachman's "SPIN Selling" as more valuable additions to one's bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book, but only for the right people.......2004-08-28

In all honesty I never write reviews, but the the negative ones that I read prompted me to do this. The fact is those who commented negatively on the book read it but never attempted to implement the process. Being an investment representative, IN A BANK, I have to say that this process does work, and it is not merely asking clients what is important about money to them.

Who this book is NOT for:
People who only want to sell investments
People who enjoy a commission based business
People who only care about their clients investments, not their values

                        Who this book IS for:
People who want to get beyond the superficial sales approach
People who want to transition to fee based planning
People who want to help clients achieve their financial goals

Why the negative comments are flat out wrong:
One reviewer makes the comment that you don't need the book, just sit down with your clients and "make the decisions you would make for yourself." Obviously this reader hardly made it into the 4th chapter of the book. The entire book is dedicated to the fact that your job as a planner is to come to an intimate understanding of what is important to your client, NOT what is important to you. So making the decisions you would make for yourself has no place in professional financial planning.

Another reader commented that he was taught in his first week of securities training to ask what is important about money to his clients. Again, the reviewer is off topic. This book is not about killer closes, or finding your clients hot buttons like most security training emphasizes. Instead, it describes a logical, repeatable method for building trust with your clients. It does not teach quick sell techniques.

Lastly, the reviewer who says it won't work in the banking industry is wrong. I am a retail based financial consultant IN A BANK, and have used this method countless times to procure and retain quality clients.

                        Closing remarks:
This book and it's contents are not magical. Reading it will not make you money, will not give you more time off, will not make you a better financial planner, better investment rep or better insurance sales person.

Only by implementing the ideas in the book, exactly as described, will you get any result. So if you want to get away from being a salesperson, and become a trusted advisor, buy this book. If you are looking for some good, quick sell techniques, look elsewhere.

Buy books from Zig Zigler to learn to sell, buy this Book to become a trusted financial advisor.

5 out of 5 stars Only for the best of the best financial professionals.......2004-03-12

If you are a financial professional and have not read this book, you are missing out! The author emphasizes the importance of trust, and how understanding a person's values system can make a world of difference. One could almost say that these ideas originated from Dr. Stephen Covey's "The 7 Habits of Highely Effective People". The main difference is that, Values-Based Selling is specifically for financial advisors. There are people who read all kinds of books on "selling" and make excuses for why it didn't work out. To those who implemented the ideas in Values Based Selling and didn't see results or gave up: with all due respect, you didn't follow what was intended to be done in this book or you just were not meant to be a trusted advisor. This is not a system for making great salespeople, it is for those who are, or aspire to become true financial advisors and understand what financial planning really is. The author leaves out rapport building/small talk intentionally since the process is about building trust by LISTENING to "their" story, not by telling "ours".

3 out of 5 stars Good for planning, not so good for transactions.......2003-12-25

I invested in the mastery system which includes this system.
I wish I had read it at my prior company where the emphasis is
on financial planning. The values provide the "why" and therefore the motivation to complete the plan.

I now work in a bank and tried using this with not good effect.
Transaction time is much shorter. I'm now revisiting "Trust Based Selling" by Kerry Johnson and subliminal selling technqiues that more appropriately fit the banking environment.

Bacharach ignores the whole concept of rapport and goes for the close as a way to screen out people. That's great if you have an endless supply of qualified referrals to work from. Also his book assumes people want planning when many times they already have a planner or just want to do a transaction.

I'm finding both Tom Hopkins books and Kerry Johnson's a much better fit for what I do and also have bought "Socratic Selling" which I believe provides real value to the client.
