Book Description
This long-awaited and masterfully edited volume contains nearly all of the writings of Queen Elizabeth I: the clumsy letters of childhood, the early speeches of a fledgling queen, and the prayers and poetry of the monarch's later years. The first collection of its kind, Elizabeth I reveals brilliance on two counts: that of the Queen, a dazzling writer and a leading intellect of the English Renaissance, and that of the editors, whose copious annotations make the book not only essential to scholars but accessible to general readers as well.
Customer Reviews:
Trust the source!.......2006-05-03
There are countless books on Tudor England and Elizabeth I in particular. So, it is refreshing to finally read some of the letters so many authors have used as source material in their books about the Virgin Queen. There's little doubt that she was well educated and highly intelligent. Now, readers ready and willing to dive into medieval letters, in the formal language of the time, will be rewarded by the ability to form their own opinion about whether this woman was politically savvy, or a political pawn.
You be the judge--no, really:)
Faith.......2000-11-25
This is a beautifully designed book. As to what's inside: It contains what too many of her biographers are either too dishonest, too ignorant, or, too afraid to include, i.e. her belief in God and her understanding that her country and her country's people had a unique place and a unique role in carrying out God's plan. Elizabeth I had a complete understanding. It's difficult to write off her accomplishments in learning at such a young age as being merely the result of having royal tutors helping her along. This is what many biographers try to do. There's never been an over-supply of young genius in royal families in any era. More attention, as well, should be paid to her reading. Reading great books has never been a guarantee of anything regarding somebody's understanding of themselves and the world, but it is, without exception, a key ingredient in the education (self-education or otherwise) of everybody who eventually DOES attain a real understanding of themselves and the world. Elizabeth's understanding may have even gone beyond herself and the world around her... These writings are not ideal as a window into her, but there is enough here to work up an impression above the words, and, coupled with a good biography such as the one by Paul Johnson the picture can become very complete.
Elizabeth in her own words.......2000-08-31
Queen Elizabeth I of England has had hundreds of books written *about* her, but very few of them allow us to hear what she has to say in her own words. I found this an accessible, well-edited collection, not of *all* her words, but of a very good sample. It includes all of the speeches, prayers and poems she wrote that are available from reliable contemporary sources (as with all famous people, things have been attributed to her that she never wrote). It also includes -- and this is my favorite part -- a selection of her letters; sometimes the replies are also included, as with a series of angry letters she exchanged with King James of Scotland (all the while addressing him as "my right dear brother and cousin"). The documents range from formal speeches to Parliament to the occasional playful, teasing or personal note, such as the one she wrote to Lord Leicester in the Netherlands that begins, "Rob, I am afraid you will suppose by my wandering writings that a midsummer moon hath taken large possession of my brains..." Spelling and punctuation have been modernized, and unusual words have been footnoted, but the words are otherwise unaltered, and the texts are presented in full, sometimes in several versions where they differ significantly. I did find that a basic knowledge of the outline of the events of her life is immensely helpful in understanding who she is addressing and why, which is often mentioned only briefly in the notes. There is a certain amount of theorizing in the book's Preface about the "strategic gendering of Elizabeth's self-representation" -- but the texts really speak for themselves. This is a rare chance to see historical material that's often hard to locate, and an enjoyable chance to be "inside the head" of a fascinating historical person.

From the title, William Wharton's Houseboat on the Seine sounds like it may be a river-bound version of Peter Mayle's A Year in Provence. Not exactly. Before he published his first novel, Birdy, Wharton was a painter and schoolteacher living in Paris. Bad judgment prevailed when he was offered the chance to buy a hulk of a houseboat that had once been the property of an Arctic explorer. Wharton said yes, and soon after, the houseboat sank. Most of the book recounts Wharton's two-decade long effort to first re-float and then rebuild the decrepit vessel.
Book Description
William Wharton's second memoir and tenth book is a delightful, often hilarious saga of the misadventures of an American artist in Paris dealing with a houseboat that refuses to stay afloat.
Customer Reviews:
InSeine.......2004-06-21
I have only read two of William Wharton's other books, Birdy and Last lovers, both of which I thought were brilliant although not at all similar.
Houseboat on the Seine is a different type of book completely. It is certainly no literary masterpiece, but it has it's own fascination. When I bought it I was not expecting to be brilliant, having read other peoples reviews. Certainly as other reviewers have pointed out it contains a lot of detail such as how to nail together some wood to make a floor, wall paneling, a ceiling, a gangplank etc., or how not to moor your houseboat to a river bank.
What is fascinating though is watching how Wharton makes a small investment to realize a minor dream, and then gets dragged into a series of ever increasing expensive and time consuming investments to keep the dream alive. There are many points where he seems to be out of his depth with what is going on around him, but he pumps the money in regardless, despite the fact he had precious little of it at the time. As he goes on this minor dream becomes major and in fact takes over his life.
It is interesting to speculate whether put in the same situation you would persevere as he did, or at which point you would have walked away from the whole calamity.
The last twenty pages or so fall apart somewhat, and it sometimes feels like he had a target number of pages to write, but that he had finished the main story long before writing them.
I recommend it as a character study and as a tool for doing some self-evaluation, not as what most people would consider to be a gripping piece of entertainment though. Having said that I read cover to cover over two evenings.
Houseboat on the Seine.......2002-09-02
This was the first book I read by Wm. Wharton. I found it so interesting I couldn't put it down. It held my interest right away. I loved it. He is a very detailed writer and keeps my interested to the end. I continued to find other books by him.
Ever After is another to hold ones interest. As before he is an exellent writer. Would love to see his paintings also.
I would say anyone who reads his books won't be disappointed.
Eleanor C.Roby
Yo Ho Ho.......2001-10-22
William Wharton, American expatriate in France, author and artist, determines to live in a houseboat on the Seine. It promptly sinks. The book recounts the refloating, repositioning and refurbishing of this old tub. Somehow, he does it with the help of friends and a very bright, very practical teenaged friend. As I can barely find my way around a hardware store--and care less--I didn't appreciate the cleverness of the rehab, but I did enjoy the people and the stories abounding in the countryside. Wharton, of course, succeeds. He may be a moderately annoying expat, but he writes an interesting book.
"This Old Boat".......2001-07-12
If you find home restoration stories interesting you will find this an intriguing and satisfying read. However, despite the title and location the book contains exceedingly little in the way of descriptions of French atmosphere, scenery, or culture, virtually none, actually. While this doesn't necessarily detract from what is an interesting memoir, Wharton's story could have taken place on the Mississippi or Hudson for its descriptions of the host nation.
It is an amazing story of fortitude and luck. The story begins with Wharton's acquisition of a houseboat and what appears to be a lingering plague of bad luck. However, through sheer determination he surmounts it, and in so doing he attracts the advice and help of people interesting in making his houseboat reconstruction project a success. In the process he learns alot about himself, and the project galvanizes what is a family distinctive in patience, character, flexibility, and sense of adventure.
An interesting side note is the allusions to what is a seemingly cohesive American ex-patriot community which seems to live in France but not to assimilate. One gets the impression that they appreciate the location, but aren't inclined to acclimate to French society.
The book isn't great literature and about 4/5 of the way through, after describing grueling tests and continually avoiding devastating failures, he suddenly begins to describe his life approaching retirement 20 years later...with virtually no segue. Hmmm. Still, an interesting book. The intricate (excessive?) detail given to the reconstruction project will appeal to a distinctive audience; this might be generalized as a "men's interest book".
A Very Pleasant Expat American Memoir.......2000-06-29
Wharton is very good at creating a nostalgic mood for any American who is infatuated with (and occasionally infuriated by) the French. Wharton describes the trials of buying, restoring and living aboard a houseboat. Though he finds hassles around nearly every corner, he manages to keep his head above water and provides a light-hearted narration.
Wharton lives for years in France, but clearly retains a very American spirit through it all, which helps make this story accessible.
A pleasant, quick read for any American who finds himself missing Europe's quirks. If you are prone to buying and fixing old boats, cars, airplanes or houses, then you will find even more here.

Book Description
There is no cinema with such effect as that of the hallucinatory horror of Italian horror films. From Riccardo Freda's I Vampiri in 1956 to Il Cartaio in 2004 (The Card Player), this work recounts the origins of the genre, celebrates ten auteurs who have contributed to Italian horror, mentions the many who have made noteworthy films, and discusses the influential genres associated with Italian horror.
The directors discussed in detail are Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava, Mario Bava, Ruggero Deodata, Lucio Fulci, Umberto Lenzi, Antonia Margheriti, Aristide Massaccesi, Bruno Mattei, and Michele Soavi. Each section includes a short biography, a detailed account of the subject's career, discussion of influences both literary and cinematic, commentary on the films, with plots and production details, and an exhaustive filmography. The second section lists other important directors, each with a short discussion and selected filmography. The work concludes with a chapter on the future of Italian horror and an appendix of important horror films by other directors, and is illustrated with stills, posters, and behind-the-scenes shots.
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as it should be.......2007-08-13
It's not really bad, but it's nowhere near as good as one would hope or even expect with that price tag. This book is more for novices, whom I can't imagine would shell out fifty bucks for it. Those already familar with Italian horror will learn nothing new here. To make matters worst, the book is full of errors, some that even the most casual reader are likely to know to be wrong. Two examples being misidentifing one of the characters that Anna Falchi plays in Dellamorte, Dellamore (Cemetary Man)and the idenity of Asai Argento's mother. All this plus unwaranted critisim of the films themselves. At twenty bucks, it would be worth adding to any serious collection of books relating to horror films or films in general, at fifty bucks, If I could do it over again, I'd pass
an excelent travel in giallo cinema.......2005-10-27
Excelent purchase for all those who want to know a little more about the italian horror cinema. This wonderful travel begins with a panorama over the history of the gothic and horror cinema in Italy; then, it shows the 10 most important giallo directors (Argento, Fulci, the Bavas among others); later, the author Louis Paul discusses briefly about more obscure directors. And at the end of the book, there's a really vast bibliography, very useful to those who want to make a research on this subject (italian horror cinema).
Explore the Id .......2005-02-05
Because of my preference for psychological horror, I had long resisted the Italian giallo. I've since come to realize my error. It is precisely its vast psychological component that makes the giallo unique. What other art form peers so unflinchingly into the darkest recess of the human psyche? This book helped me form that appreciation. In addition to offering hundreds of plot summaries, the author discusses the films' psychological underpinnings at length; musing as to what makes them tick individually and what makes the genre tick as a whole. There is also a wealth of well-organized reference material, exhaustively researched and detailed, for those who wish to dive deep into the arcana. I turned to the book to find out which Gogol story served as the basis for Bava's "Black Sunday" (since the story's title isn't listed in the film's credits) and found the answer immediately.
On the down side, the author has a preference for the movies' Italian titles, which meant I had to frequently thumb through the book for translations. (Although longtime fans of the genre may not be bothered by this.)
Could have been much better.......2004-12-31
I agree with the previous reviewer that Louis Pauls's new book comes as a bit of a disppointment. For that price, you would expect beautiful stills on good quality paper; instead what you get is sparse black-and-white photos on poor quality paper. The author's writing style doesn't help either: his bland style coupled with a lack of critical evaluations of the works of the major directors make this book pale in comparison to other much more exciting works, like Hardy's "The Overlook Film Encyclopedia: Horror" or Schneider's "Fear Without Frontiers". I am pretty sure "giallo cinema" is much more exciting and colorful than portrayed by the author.
On the positive side, Louis Paul does cover, to my knowledge, almost every major Italian horror movie and director. He covers many more giallos than does Phil Hardy. Also the index is very comprehensive and mentions both people and movies (both the English and Italian names).
All in all: could have been better but still a valuable reference.
Italian Horror Film Directors.......2004-12-16
A much-needed study of the subject...but this ain't it. Chapters devoted to the major players (Bava, Fulci, etc.) and sections devoted to the not-so majors. He puts Freda in this category, but anybody who gave Maestro Bava his start AND made The Terror of Dr. Hitchcock is pretty important, in my opinion. And speaking of opinions.... The entries are mainly ______ was born in ______, got started in ________, and then made _______. Not much critical evaluation, and some of the information is glaringly wrong: Dawn of the Dead was made in...Philadelphia??? None of this would matter so much if this wasn't one of those incredibly expensive MacFarland books. For the money, there shouldn't be ANY errors! For completists -- and wealthy ones, at that -- only.

Customer Reviews:
Pretty good guide.......2003-02-12
Well, its hard to rate a good guide these days. I liked it. It helped me get through the game and gave me some good strategies. It was a bit thin and I thought some parts could have used some better hints, but all and all, a good book to help you out.
A Very Good Manual for the Game.......2002-05-05
This book gives all the information about the game and who all the charachters, weapons and villians are. It has an introductory section so that you know who the charachters are and what they mean. It also has a detailed section on the weapons that you can use. It then gives details on each one of the villians (NMC's) and the best weapons against each of them. It also explains how to use the parasite energy's and what you have to attain to upgrade each one. The last section of the book is a walk through, play by play, on getting through each section of the game. Some of this is a bit sketchy but it is enough information should you get stuck in a section of the game. The author recommends that you not use the play by play section unless you are really "stuck" because it will take the mystery and excitement out of the game. I have used it several times, especially when having to decode riddles. It is an excellent resource if you are the kind of person who gets really frustrated when "stuck" at certain sections of a video game. There are many different pathways to get to the ending of the game which I don't think I would have even realized had I not used the guide. I recommend it, especially if you are new to this kind of game or if you are not familiar with the first Parasite Eve or other Brady games. (Which I was not, so I think that may be another reason why this guide was so helpful and informative.)
One of the best guides I've used.......2001-07-13
This guide is very helpful, giving clear and detailed maps, lists of items, weapons, armor, etc. It was extremely informative and easy to follow. Some people complain that the guide doesn't tell you how to beat the final two bosses, but I didn't mind. I guess even writers of a strategy guide don't want to spoil ALL the fun. The only problem I had is that the section that talks about replay, bounty, scavenger, and nightmare mode seems a bit rushed. Overall, though, it's worth the $$
Best but .... ?.......2001-05-15
Yeah, its a best book for this game. But the writer hasn`t finish the game twice. Coz` I want to know if something happen if you finish the NIGHTMARE chapter. Well, what can I say I haven`t finish that chapter too.

Customer Reviews:
Do not count on this as your single study source!.......2006-05-09
I bought this as an economical study reference. It is a great overview for key concepts but find additional sources to study by.
It took me failing the first test (after studing only from this book) to realize that the CPM exam answers are fomulated in a subjective manner. Many questions and answers are vauge and situational oriented. Questions are often worded as: choose the "most likely" or "least likely" answer, leaving 2 valid answers, the correct of which may depend on an organization's preference or even a buyer's experience!
The test seems to raise the difficulty by way intrepertation in an effort to ligitimize the CPM certification. The test is worded with such verbeage that I believe that it must have been written by a tenured government employee or mid level manager with a thesaurus.
As a purchasing professional with many years of experience, I found that most real world application and testing for certification in theory are quite different with occasional convergence.
The certification process will weed out the weak and I do take full responsibility for my first failure. Now that I know the rules of engagement, the battle is mine to be won.
Hats off to the authors for effectively simplifying a "complexable" (yes, I made that up!) subject.
It is a great reference and I will likely use it to train the buyers in our organization.
Read it and passed the exams!.......2006-04-25
Wow- I love the book but especially the CD. I bought the book, took a couple days to cram, practiced on the test samples, took the actual exams over three days, and passed all.
Nothing can take the place of subject matter expertise, which is tough to get from one book, but this sure helped. There is NO WAY I would have passed without this as study aid.
Very Good Summary.......2005-10-24
This book provides a great study guide for the CPM exam. The book is divided into the 4 sections of the exam which allows you to focus on the necessary material. It also includes a CD with lots of sample exam questions you can use to practice.
This book helped me pass the C.P.M. exam.......2005-08-04
This book helped me pass the C.P.M. exam. I was looking for a comprehensive reference, and I game across this title at amazon.com. It was not available at the time I started reviewing, March 2005. I got the book by the first week of May 2005. I took the exams in the 3rd and 4th week of June.
The book is both comprehensive and concise. I suggest you use this together (...) Although the test questions are not constructed like the ones found in C.P.M. exam, the book and the test engine helped me get the purchasing terms and definitions out of the way. I found the glossary and test engine very useful.
