    Book Description

This important new title by Richard J. Bernstein presents a detailed examination of Freud's last book, Moses and Monotheism. Bernstein argues convincingly that this frequently vilified and dismissed book is one of Freud's most important works. It is in Moses and Monotheism that Freud answers the question that obsessed him: what is the essence of the Jewish people? Bernstein goes on to show how Freud developed a new interpretation of the concept of a religious tradition--an interpretation that is applicable to both Judaism and Christianity.

Sigmund Freud's legacy and reputation have been under attack for several decades, but when the Library of Congress originally planned its Freud exhibition in 1996, their work seemed to have been conceived in total denial of that fact, and critics cried foul. After two years of tinkering, the exhibit was finally rescheduled to open in October 1998, and this coinciding collection of essays reflects the intervening debate. Librarian of Congress James Billington sets the wary editorial tone of a somewhat altered book in his foreword, speaking for example of the "now famous" Freud-Fliess correspondence--although anyone who knows the history of that correspondence's suppression, never mind its content, might well conclude that the more appropriate adjective is "infamous."

Most of the 18 essays, however, remain tenderfooted and pious, especially those by analysts such as Ilse Gubrich-Simitis and Patrick Mahony. Hannah Decker's article on the Dora case mentions critics in passing, but likewise sidesteps the more unpleasant issues, writing that Freud eventually "acknowledged his errors and showed he had made significant advances." But many critics, unmentioned by Decker, have argued strenuously that there were no real advances; even if there were, it remains clear that they did not permit Freud to see his own behavior in an honest light. Some of the overtly Freudian contributors are more flexible and, by extension, more interesting: Peter Gay on psychohistory, for example, and Robert Coles on the social idealism accompanying the idea that psychoanalysis was a key to resolving human conflict. And, as a result of the 1996 controversy, topnotch critics of Freud such as Adolf Grunbaum are now grudgingly represented. Still, Peter Kramer's rueful retrospective could serve as a coda not only to the volume but to the current state of Freud studies: "Our vision of Freud is composed of extreme images that barely intersect." --Richard Farr

          Book Description

Few figures have had as decisive and fundamental an impact on the course of modern cultural history as Sigmund Freud. Freudian theory and psychoanalytic thinking inform the ways in which we perceive ourselves and our society, and remain vital and relevant to some of our most pressing societal issues and concerns, from drug abuse and aggression to gender and sexuality. Yet few figures have inspired such sustained controversy and intense debate as Freud has, and his theoretical and cultural legacies continue to be hotly contested.
The exhibition "Sigmund Freud: Conflict and Culture," mounted by the Library of Congress, explores the influence of Freud and psychoanalysis on twentieth-century culture and examines some of his central ideas concerning the individual and society. Contemporary evaluations, emerging from changes in scientific knowledge and ideological priorities, have changed the way we view Freud's contributions to our understanding of self and society. This volume, meant to reflect the lively and eclectic spirit of the show, is a gathering of variously challenging, erudite, and amusing essays by scholars, critics, and writers.
Grouped into four broad parts, the essays exemplify the diversity of approaches to Freudian theory and psychoanalysis. "Freud Writing and Working" concentrates on the sources he drew upon, his writing, rhetoric, and work habits. The pieces in "Interpretation, Suggestion, and Agency" deal with the evolution of Freud's theories and technique. "Absorption and Diffusion" concerns the spread of psychoanalysis, its reception, and its effects on our culture. "Contested Legacies" presents a variety of perspectives on what Freud has left to our time, and the conflicts resulting from our shifting conceptions of gender, the mind, and science.
Freud: Conflict and Culture presents a fascinating spectrum of views on one of the most influential figures of the modern age.

The Art Spiegelman contribution to this book is in comic book form, pp. 165-8. In tips on telling jokes, a current obsession with people who would like to be popular, but a plague for those people who think that they already are popular, Art illustrates a joke: "This guy think's he's a mirror so he goes to see a shrink." I'm not going to tell you the results. That would be too much like trying to read Mad magazine to my mother while she was ironing. Mark Twain was the guy who could be funnier, if Art quoted him right. "Everything human is pathetic." (p. 168)

          Book Description

A dramatic revisiting of Freud’s escape from Nazi-occupied Vienna , his final days on earth, and his most controversial work—Moses and Monotheism.

When Hitler invaded Vienna in March of 1938, Sigmund Freud, old and desperately ill, was among the city’s 175,000 Jews dreading Nazi occupation. The Nazis hated Sigmund Freud with a particular vehemence: they detested his “soul-destroying glorification of the instinctual life.” Here Mark Edmundson traces Hitler and Freud’s oddly converging lives, then zeroes in on Freud’s last two years, during which, with the help of Marie Bonaparte, he was at last rescued from Vienna and brought safely to London. There he was honored as he never had been during his long, controversial life. At the same time he endured the last of more than thirty operations for cancer of the jaw. Confronting certain death, Freud, in typical fashion, did not let fame make him complacent, but instead wrote his most provocative book, Moses and Monotheism, in which he questioned the legacy of the greatest Jewish leader. Focusing on Freud’s last two years, Edmundson is able to probe Freud’s ideas about death, and also about the human proclivity to embrace fascism in politics and fundamentalism in religion. Edmundson suggests new and important ways to view Freud’s legacy, at a time when these forces are once again shaping world events.

How will the reading world receive a book whose star founded an unscientific science and advocated a complete atheism while often passing his days reading Milton's poetry or in contemplation of Moses? Favorably and, I hope, with a willingness to read through to the end. Edmundson brings to life some of the necessary tensions from the life of Sigmund Freud. In addition he plots the shocking rise of Hitler in an anti-Semitic Germany as Freud enters his brave decline and ghastly demise in war-weary London.

This book moved me and many of the thoughts it shakes in me will stay for the coming months. Some of the remarks on fascistic tyranny and religious fundamentalism that Freud forecasted for our era may strike the reader as obvious or heavy-handed after Edmundson's clear presentation. However, the author also makes fascinating and generous lines when discussing Freud's final work < > and its relationship to Judaism and other monotheisms.

Above all, Freud comes off as a teacher who taught his patients how to be self-critical and at the same time how to debunk or subvert patriarchal authority. It seems there is no eradicating the human lust for authority but perhaps as Edmundson suggests the teaching of skeptical tools and irony will be some protection. Freud's life and work form a riddle of sorts and it is his nearly Socratic knowledge of self that grants him the awareness and vitality to live and die with dignity as he lost his sight and hearing to the disintegration of his cancerous face. In Freud's death there is a life for our time.

"One thing about Max was that he was about as well-adjusted to his disability, if you want to call it that, as anyone could be... He even used his eye once to shut up an obnoxious high school coach. After he'd heard all the complaining he wanted to hear, Max took his eye out of the socket and handed it to the stunned coach, saying, `You want to umpire this game? Here, be my guest.'"

Everything Happens in Chillicothe is an authentic, behind-the-scenes look at the lowest rung of professional baseball, and a biography of Max McLeary, the one-eyed umpire and a most intriguing individual. Author Mike Shannon spent the 2000 Frontier League season attending games with McLeary and gives his account of the season here. The book speaks volumes about umpiring as a profession, relationships (particularly between Max and his estranged son, a minor league player; between Max and his long-suffering wife Patty; and between Max and his umpiring partner Jim Schaly), life in small-town America, and the various people connected with the Chillicothe Paints and other teams in the Frontier League. Many humorous and poignant stories, are told here for the first time, by McLeary, Schaly, and others.

This book was a great read. I think Shannon could descibe a turd and it would be exciting. He has a very unique style of writing that made me want to read the next page and the next and the next......

I think it was a good idea to tell about the Frontier League using Max the umpire to spice it up. I really have a good feel for the Frontier League and I can't wait to start my FL summer tour.

This book is for anyone one who is a true fan of baseball.

5 out of 5 stars Great Look at Independent Baseball.......2004-03-23

Mike Shannon does a great job of getting behind the scenes of the life of an umpire in the independent Frontier League. As a resident of a town that had a team in the FL for 8 years (1995-2002), it was an especially interesting read. What really surprised me was that the featured subject, umpire Max McLeary, was born and raised here in Johnstown. A fine book for those who love the minor leagues!

                  5 out of 5 stars Baseball Is A Game.......2004-03-10

Someone once wrote that major league baseball is a business, but minor league baseball is still a game. For those of us who love baseball, but have soured on major league baseball, Mike Shannon's book hits it on the nose. His romp through the Frontier League is an entertaining and informative narrative on the players and people involved in the lower minor leagues. They truly love the game of baseball and you will love this book!

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Bush League!!.......2004-01-09

I loved this book because I love the game of baseball. This book captures the essence of the low minors and the people and personalities and places and ballparks that make the minors such an appealing place to watch the game. I am already planning a summer roadtrip to Chillicothe and Richmond and the rest of the Frontier League. Great read!

                  5 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT GLASS, IT'S PLASTIC.......2004-01-09

I work as an umpire in the Frontier League and work with Max McLeary and Jim Schaly. As you can see Max is a very complicated guy. This league is his life, not only during the season, but year round. When his umpiring days are over he would like to work within the league in some capacity. The stories in this book are true. Last year Max and I worked a series in Evansville, Indiana and before the game I found a white cane with a red tip (a blind persons cane) sitting in the locker room. Max decided that it would be funny to put on some dark sun glasses, turn his cap backwards and come out to ground rules using the cane. The place went nuts!

Last but not least, Mike writes a great book but there is one error that I must correct. Max's eye is plastic and if you're ever on the road with him make sure you don't get up in the middle of the night and drink from the water cup by the sink. That's the one with his eye in it.

In this followup to The Official Splatter Movie Guide of 1989, John McCarty and his dauntless team of splatter scholars have assembled another 400-odd reviews of the messiest movies ever made. As in the first volume, the films represent every manifestation of the splatter aesthetic, from the abjectly trashy (The Corpse Grinders) to the best of Hollywood (The Silence of the Lambs), including horror, sci-fi, action, thrillers, documentaries, and even a few comedies; McCarty's foreword includes some perceptive remarks on the genre-crossing properties of graphic gore. This volume also boasts some 24 pages of stills (not all of them well chosen) and arresting cover art. Once again, English-language movies predominate: European splatter is represented chiefly by the major Italian directors, and only one Asian entry appears.

This volume improves on its predecessor in a couple of ways. First, there are several appendices, including an index of directors and one called "Carnographic Pleasures," which groups films in categories such as "Simply Putrid," "Yuppies Get Slaughtered," and "You Think Your Family's Dysfunctional?"--a valuable aid in planning video theme evenings. Also, the reviews themselves are more extensive; the writers clearly decided to indulge themselves this time, and their remarks often have decidedly more entertainment value than the films. This is not to say that the book exists primarily as an excuse to lambaste cheesy movies, but McCarty and company do not spare the vitriol when it's called for.

Informative, intelligent, and amusing, this volume and its companion make a valuable resource for any viewer with a taste for the grisly. --Mary V. Burke

4 out of 5 stars Splatter Movies- Taboo's are are blown apart in this book.......2000-05-11

Having purchased and read the first Splatter Movie Guide (also by John McCarty) I was wondering what to expect from this book. There was only a three year gap written between the two, and in the original almost every splatter movie you could think of was included. All of the expected were featured in the original- Friday the 13th, low budget Italian shockers produced with hardly any budgets, and mainstream American films. In the period between when the books were written there was very few splatter films to come out, so I thought the author and his cohorts would have have very few materials to work from. I was inncorrect. It seems this book actually includes more reviews than the first. Obscure titles such as Brain Dead (aka Dead Alive) are featured, and the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th series are updated. All reviews are informative, scathing (in some cases) and each has a dash of humor, as is expected when dealing with a subject as ridiculous as the Splatter movie. The book inspires you to go out and track down some of the films that he mentions ( some of which can be found on this site). The only problem however is the lack of movies mentioned from futher afeild such as the Eastern European splatter film (although I doubt there are many) and some of the reviews are sparse. Despite that setback, I would recommend this book to any horror enthusiast, aswell as the more mainstream thriller fan (as films like Silence of the Lambs are included.)

Composer Ned Rorem has an exquisite way with a song, distilling musical essences to provide miniature masterpieces that linger in listeners' minds. He is also, as these diaries prove, a facile, if somewhat undisciplined, writer. And someone mired in self-absorption. At the time Rorem wrote his diaries, he was distinctly callow and obsessed with being "pretty"; yet the picture that emerges of him in his youth is not entirely attractive. The book will be of interest to those who are curious about the lives of significant composers, both for the small insights that he shares about his composition process and for the details of his life and the circumstances under which he wrote his music. His vividly sketched picture of gay life more than a generation ago widens the audience of this book. --Sarah Bryan Miller

I came about Rorem 'round about-ly -through videos of interviews and liner note snippets - and was greatly intrigued by his blatantly keen mind. While learning the music, I put the 'word' into it all and it plunged me even deeper. Between his impish candor and spotless observation one experiences a fine chunk of a true artistic pursuit. Also, his reflections on the two worlds of Paris and New York and the creative flora and fauna therein are priceless.

                                        Book Description

Can a book teach you how to beat the pants off the stock market? After all, billion-dollar portfolio managers can't do it -- and if they can't, they figure no one can. Business-school professors not only say it's impossible, but they can cart out plenty of statistics to prove it. So, why should you buy this book? Because Joel Greenblatt has been beating the pants off the stock market (with returns of 50 percent a year) for more than ten years. And now he's willing to show you how to do it, too.

Here, in this witty and accessible guide, you'll learn the secret hiding places of stock market profits. You'll see how simple it is to succeed where the professionals and the professors have failed. No special tools are required. No degrees are needed. All it takes is a little time and a little effort, and You Can Be a Stock Market Genius.

But who's Joel Greenblatt and why should you listen to him? He's the former chairman of a Fortune 500 company and founder of Gotham Capital, an investment partnership whose stock portfolio achieved returns of $52 for each $1 invested at its inception. Now he's ready to reveal all his secrets.

This book will show you how to uncover the investment opportunities that the experts are actually trained to miss. You'll learn the hidden value and the incredible profits that lie waiting in those uncharted areas where the individual investor has a huge advantage over the Wall Street pros. This is not a book full of theoretical possibilities; You Can Be a Stock Market Genius is a practical guide to finding those special situations in which big profits are possible. It's all here, including specific case studies, the background information you need, and the tools you'll use. If you're an investor who wants to beat the market, you've come to the right place. If you want to be a stock market genius, just think of this book as your personal treasure map to the secret hiding places of the stock market profits that you've been looking for.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most interesting books I have read recently.......2007-08-23

Joel Greenblatt's book is a masterpiece of investment information. The book provides valuable information for anyone involved in the markets, whether they are an individual investor or a finance professional.

The book details several types of special situation investing and explains the pros and cons of these situations. What was most impressive about this book however, is that manner in which he manages to explain everything he is discussing in such a clear, and engaging fashion. Although I do not usually think of finance books as "page turners" I read this one virtually, in one sitting.

5 out of 5 stars My other favorite book.......2007-05-17

I know the title of the book sounds like a joke but it's a great book. In fact, it is my favorite investment book after Warren Buffett's letters to shareholders. Joel Greenblatt takes you to investing areas that aren't followed closely by Wall Street and help you make money at the same time.

I am also a sucker for investment books that are fun to read and doesn't cause me to feel like I'm chewing glasses. This doesn't mean this book isn't top-notch! For what it's worth, I would've probably pay over $50 for this gem.

5 out of 5 stars A good book, despite the title.......2007-04-15

Although the title leaves a little to be desired, and you may want to hide it from friends who think you have a get-rich-quick scheme brewing, this book is actually full of insightful knowledge about special situation investing. These are situations in which the market may misjudge a company's stock price and a smart investor may be able to jump in and take advantage of the temporary mispricing. A few examples include spin-offs, where a company will break off a part of its business as a new company with its own stock, corporate restructuring, merger securities, and companies recovering from bankruptcy. Each chapter covers a different concept and includes a few examples.
The book is written well with lots of humor throughout. A beginner without an adequate background in business may find the topics confusing, but intermediate investors should be able to find some practical knowledge of places to look for mispriced companies. A warning: the ideas do require some homework. Be prepared to read through press releases, financial statements, and other boring pieces that no one else bothers to read to find potential picks. But that's what value investing is about, finding the stocks that no one else bothers to look. Highly recommended.

I am usually turned away by cute and quirky book titles, and though this rule is usually a good one to follow, this book is another good reason not to always judge a book by its cover. The sub, sub-title is the real heart of the book on how to "uncover the secret hiding places of stock market profits". If I add one of my favorite lines in the book, "you don't have to be a genius, but you do need a basic understanding of financial statements, some common sense, and the patience necessary to gain experience" this quote really sums up the thesis of Mr. Greenblatt. His theme being that I will describe and point the way to some of the hiding places of possible under appreciated value opportunities, but you as the investor must put in the due diligence and a little work on your own.

Though this book was originally published in 1997, Mr. Greenblatt is still at his trade and doing well which bodes well for this book and its teachings. Toss in a little uncertainty, a special situation, your due diligence, and your on your way as you now know the hiding places.

There are two types of people; people who save money and people who don't. It is really easy if you don't save money (you will suffer when you are old, but now you are fine). If you save money, you are always thinking about where to invest money. You can either put money in bank (where you are barely beating inflation) or you can put money in stock market.
There are two types of people who do "something" in stock market; people who trade and people who invest. If you believe in investing and not trading, you are perpetually worrying about finding "cheap" stocks (if you are buying "expensive" stocks then you should STOP and start trading instead).

It really doesn't matter which category of people you belong to, you really need to read this book as a starting point for your investment education. Joe gives you some investment scenarios to consider for finding "cheap" stocks, but, more importantly he does that in very "average Joe" friendly way. Really easy read.
