          Book Description

Christy Mathewson (1880-1925) was baseball's first superstar pitcher who still ranks among the all-time leaders in wins, earned run average, and shutouts. Mathewson was in the first group elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, with Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Ty Cobb, and Walter Johnson. At a time when professional ballplayers were regarded as hard-living rogues, Matty was a soft-spoken college boy who espoused clean living and did more than any other athlete to elevate the place of sports in American life. Parents longed for their children to model their lives after his. He even wrote children's books to help instill the values of hard work and determination. With a diverse cast of characters including Teddy Roosevelt, Edith Wharton and Scott Fitzgerald, The Player is an exciting, cinematic evocation of a singular American life — and what that life means today. Photographs are featured.

          5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-08-29

When I was given this book, the gift-bearer informed me that it was the perfect gift for me, "... a book about baseball AND U.S. history.". Being the grateful recipient of said gift I of course bit my tongue, didn't respond, "How do you separate the two?", and accepted the gift in the spirit it was given. Now, after reading it, I realize how smart my niece is. The book is indeed about both, and without wandering too far from its subject, (Christy, in case there is some confusion), is a very enagaging read. Similar books about this time period in baseball tend to get repetitive and somewhat choppy to read by piecing together newspaper reports and box scores. This author alleviates that problem by also tracking events in the U.S., (and the world as 1914 approaches), while Christy pitches his way through his baseball career. This is recommended for baseball novices, hard core fans and anyone in between as it's a nicely written book.

          4 out of 5 stars A look back to a different time.......2006-04-23

"The Player" provided a trip back in time to what it was like playing ball around the turn of the century through the times of the first World War.

To understand what Mathewson meant to the game itself is truly amazing. Not only being a phonomenal pitcher with exceptional control, he realized that he was a role model for others, not only the young kids that idolized him, but the everyday american worker. To know what he gave of himself to others off the ball field, his charity work, volunteering for WWI at the age of 37, gives us a better insight to the individual.

The book also tells of his attempts to clean up the game, before the Black Sox scandal. He knew it was going on, tried to warn others, but no one would listen.

A great read if you want to get a much clearer insight into one of the greatest ball players of all time. One that is unfortunatelly forgotten by too many in today's game.

3 out of 5 stars Not very deep.......2004-05-11

This book is a decent read but it is less a biography of Mathewson than it is a commentary on the times and events that he lived through. I had hoped to learn about who Christy Mathewson was and what made him so great and instead I felt like I read an overview of the major events in baseball and history during the late 1800's to the mid 1900's.

3 out of 5 stars Decent but too broad.......2004-01-15

As a fan of baseball history, I have been looking for a modern, definitive biography of Christy Mathewson ever since I grew to admire him many years ago. I was hoping that Philip Seib's The Player would be that elusive work, but I was wrong. Although it covers the major events of Matty's life, Seib works very hard to put him in context as the first major baseball star and the times that he lived in, so what we're left with is less of a biography and more of a social history.

This is all well and good, and the premise is an interesting one, except that Seib doesn't take it far enough and when he tries to expound on his theory, he ends up giving more info on other figures of the times like Billy Sunday and Woodrow Wilson than on Mathewson.

Almost contradictorally, the main problem is that it all just feels too thin. At less than 200 pages it's a one and a half day read at best and you come away not knowing anything more about Mathewson than you would reading any history of baseball. Were I Seib's editor, I would have recommended that he go in the opposite direction and really blow out his research. Joseph Durso wrote an excellent double biography of John McGraw and Casey Stengel that captured the general history of American society as well as baseball and that is clearly what Seib is aspiring to but falls short.

I don't want to knock the book too much since I enjoy general history as much as anyone, but I guess I just expected so much more. Also, Seib labors in spots to draw his conclusions and ends up being extremely repetitive. His reverence for Mathewson is well-appreciated, but borders on overindulgence.

If you are interested in reading more on Mathewson, I would recommend seeking out the Jonathan Yardley essay "The Real Frank Merriwell" for a terrific mini-bio and tribute to a great pitcher.

          5 out of 5 stars I Was Plesantly Surprised.......2003-11-13

Considering the book is less than 200 pages long I wondered what this book would tell me about Christy Mathewson I haven't already read somewhere else. Author Philip Seib emphasizes the positive role model Matty played both as a player and as a private citizen. The author also provides us with details of former major leaguer Eddie Grant who lost his life fighting in World War I. His monument used to appear in center field in the Polo Grounds, and I was pleased to read details I hadn't read before. Mathewson enlisted in World War I, and came in contact with poisonous gas in a training drill in Europe shortly before The Great War ended. He returned from Europe to help McGraw as a coach with the Giants, and once again encountered the crooked Hal Chase whom Matty had in his brief tenure as manager of the Cincinnati Reds after his (Matty's) playing days were over. He was an observer of the 1919 World Series between the White Sox and Reds, and to his dismay, observed what he believed to be crookedness in the play of the Chicago team. His cough persisted, and progressed to tuberculosis. Matty spent time at Saranac Lake in upstate New York where the dry air was thought to be helpful to patients. He felt well enough to join the Boston Braves in the front office, but had to return to Saranac Lake where he died during the 1925 World Series. This would be an excellent book for both beginning readers of Christy Mathewson, or those who have a more extensive knowledge of one of the first five members elected to Baseball's Hall of Fame.

          Book Description

On March 12, 1993, Lillian Gish's memorial service was attended by a host of celebrities whose lives had been touched by her long and remarkable career. From her first film, An Unseen Enemy (1912), to her last, The Whales of August (1987), Lillian Gish personified film. With a theatrical career spanning nearly 100 years, Gish saw motion pictures evolve from flickers to blockbusters. Almost always playing someone who needed to be rescued or protected, her trademark delicacy and vulnerability were, however, only part of her persona. She was a strong and complex woman whose painful childhood taught her frugality, love for her mother and her sister, Dorothy, and a distrust of men. In this, her most complete biography, the author, who was her friend, chronicles the hardships, heartaches, and fierce determination that shaped her from her days as a fatherless child to those as head of her family, and on to a time when she became nearly a legend. Featuring rare photographs and intimate recollections of Lillian, Dorothy, and other important figures, the biography is helpful in understanding film history as well as one of its most beautiful and important figures.

          5 out of 5 stars A Very Thorough Study.......2001-06-05

This book is a very insightful study of a very great lady. I especially enjoyed the textbook format. But I would agree with one other reviewer that it was not proofread as well as it should have been. I had the great fortune to know Miss Gish, having been her and her sister Dorothy's neighbor in 1965 while she was at the Stratford theatre in Connecticut. I have personal photos which I would like to share with Mr. Oderman if he would e-mail me at JimFan630@aol.com . I am also fortunate to have several letters (typed with a full signature), a hand writted postcard and a personally written note sent after Dorothy's death. I would not part with them for the world! Miss Gish was a rare treasure and we will not see her like again. Thank you, Mr. Oderman!

2 out of 5 stars An Amateur Effort.......2000-10-24

Generally, the best biographies are *not* written by people who were friends of their subjects. Oderman's book is no exception to this rule. A long-time friend of Lillian Gish's, Oderman lacks the critical distance that incisive biography requires. He interviewed many sources, but he seems to have accepted their statements more or less without question, and his analysis, both of Gish and of film, is sketchy and superficial. Stylistically, Oderman's prose suffers from repetition, awkward phrasing, and a disconcerting lack of transitions. If he plans to publish more works with McFarland Press, he might consider asking them to find better copy editors. Typos, apostrophe errors, and usage gaffes such as "did not phase her" abound throughout the text. The most valuable parts of the book are the many quotations from Gish herself and from her contemporaries.

          4 out of 5 stars A Friend's Appreciation.......2000-05-01

"A Life on Stage and Screen" is an affectionate tribute to a woman the author clearly much admires. That said, it's still not the authoritative critical biography that Gish's status as an artist deserves. Oderman's writing is functional at best, and he provides little critical perspective on Gish's post-silent career, relying instead on a straightforward "and then she did this, and then that" approach. Even so, it's good at last to have some work in addition to her own memoir by which to gauge Miss Gish's life and works, and the author's personal touch does illumine what he presents as a rather sad off-screen/off-stage life.

As the mother of a 3 year old son, I found the book to offer great insights for his current age - allowing him to choose what is showcased on the refrigerator, having him "read the pictures" and encouraging him to be happy that he "reads like a 3 year old", as well as providing games and projects for us to work on as he progresses. I found it to be very helpful, easy to read, and broken down into small tasks/projects that are very easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Get a copy for yourself and anyone else who needs wise financial advise........2007-07-30

Great book. It emphasizes the importance of saving and then goes on the give good investing advise. A novice all the way to a sophisticated investor will learn a lot from this book. I bought 3 copies and am loaning them out to family and friends.

3 out of 5 stars Silly Title With Good Information.......2006-11-13

This contains a lot of good advice about how to begin accumulating wealth and increase the same.

It has good information about investing in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. It also has a lot of advice for those who are starting or building a business.

Although it is good, I think that there are other books on building wealth that are far better. I would particularly recommend 'The Total Money Makeover' by Dave Ramsey. It is written in a more user friendly style and has a great plan that is workable for virtually everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Great book! Common sense, easy to comprehend!.......2006-11-11

This book works! I bought the first edition years ago and just bought the 3rd edition as a gift for a freind. The advice works! It is written in clear language. The author does not try to intimidate the beginner. He is trying to make the reader feel confident that they can do this too!

This was my first investment book. Many more have followed but this one influenced my life the most. Great book!

5 out of 5 stars Suzie Orman, Your Fired.......2004-09-21

I purchased this book based on the reviews of other readers, and must admit I was very skeptical about it. But nothing ventured, nothing gained... This ventured really paid off.

I haven't even read the entire book at the time of this review, but I have to give it 5 stars. This book takes away the smoke & mirrors about investing, and the author's enthusiasm about investing in contagious.

I was a Suzie Orman fan and I'm sure she's a great person, but she comes off kind of arrogant: it's her way, or no way at all. Every couple of years Suzie has to repackage her advice into a new book. I've read most of her books: same song, maybe a different tune.

Larry's book straight plain English with no BS: here's what you need to do, displicine is needed if you're serious, stay way of these investments, when you reach these milestones here are the considerations needed, etc.

The book changed my outlook on investing. You don't need a full service broker. Buy this book, and forget paying commissions. A little research and you can just as good as the pros, provided you do your homework.

                5 out of 5 stars Best investment.......2004-03-15

The book lays out in simple, easy-to-understand terms, the ways you achieve wealth. The writing is not preachy nor circuitous like Rich Dad, Poor Dad. What we have here is a clear, easy-to-follow roadmap to financial independence. There are loads of insights and mind-opening concepts here, so I recommend buying this book. It's money well spent.
