Customer Reviews:
This is an outstanding book.......2000-10-27
This is an outstanding book. It is superbly written and thoroughly researched. If your interested in the Pacific Electric or Southern Pacific, this book is a valuable addition to your bookshelf.
A very ineteresting and informative work.......2000-02-04
Huntington is a household name for anyone in Southern California. The name is everywhere in Los Angeles due to the tremendous influence this metropolitan entrepreneur had on the development of one of America's largest cities.
His start in big business was with the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, where his uncle served as the company's president. He showed tremendous skill and quickly ascended in the business world to become one of the most powerful businessmen in the United States.
Although he only had a high school education, Henry Huntington possessed incredible business savvy. He succeeded in almost everything he attempted, but his work in Southern California was the crown jewel.
Friedricks points out each of the major events in Henry Huntington's life, both at the personal and professional level. He discusses both Huntington's amazing contributions to Southern California and his scandalous personal life.
The book is balanced. It keeps the reader interested. It is a definite "must read" for anyone interested in the history of Southern California or the story of a major leader in the business world during the era of American industrialization.
Customer Reviews:
A trifle flat.......2003-09-30
Most people are drawn to Huntington because of the magnificent gardens in California, or they themselves are avowed bibliophiles. If you revere books and are a book lover, then Henry Huntington is someone to admire and respect. His book collection is one of the premiere collections in the world, especially his concentration of incunabula. Huntington's mammoth collection is stored in the incomparable Huntington Gardens in San Marino, California - one of the most lovely places on earth. The permanent exhibitions include a first edition of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales and numerous Shakespearian folios. Huntington's massive collection of autographs is also on display.
The story of how Huntington amassed these priceless treasures is fascinating: the amount of zeal and money he poured into this endeavor makes for a world class story. Unfortunately, this book doesn't focus enough on this aspect of his life. The narrative becomes slow, plodding and ultimately tedious. One wishes that Thorpe would have concentrated more completely on Huntington's mania for book collecting, a passion to be envied for those of us not blessed with being multi-millionaires. Instead he veers off into areas not particularly interesting, though his history of early 20th century California is exceptional.
Huntington's story is not one full of scintillating orgies, nor was he a riveting personal character, like Hearst. But this book paints a rather dour, boring picture of one of the greatest American collectors.

Book Description
A legendary book collector, a connoisseur of fine art, a horticulturist, and a philanthropist, Henry Edwards Huntington is perhaps best known as the founder of the world-renowned Huntington Library, Art Gallery, and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. James Thorpe's comprehensive biography of Huntington tells the richly human story of the man who became America's greatest book collector and was a leading figure in the development of southern California.
Henry Edwards Huntington was born in New York State in 1850. He began working at the age of 17, eventually moved to California, and in later years was hailed for his vision in developing the street railway system that created the structure of the Los Angeles area. Always a lover of books, Huntington acquired many spectacular volumes--among them the complete Gutenberg Bible on vellum and the library of the Earl of Bridgewater. He also built a splendid art collection and established a grand botanical garden on the grounds of the buildings that would house his art and books. Then, in an act of philanthropy seldom equaled, he gave these great treasures to the public.
The intimate side of Huntington's life appears in these pages, too. Thorpe has culled a vast trove of private letters, diaries, and other documents that reveal Huntington's exceptional personal qualities. The author's well-rounded biography of this unassuming yet gifted American is also richly evocative of the times in which Henry Edwards Huntington lived.

Book Description
A refreshing view of the lives of Henry Edwards and Arabella Huntington and the institution they created, drawn from original documents and letters in the Huntington archives. Written by a longtime Huntington docent, the book documents Huntington's business enterprises, including the development of the railroads in Southern California. It also records what we know about Arabella Huntington's mysterious background and first marriage to Collis Huntington. The purchase of the ranch in San Marino, the subsequent development of the library and art collections, and the creation of the gardens are also described. A final chapter, "Arrangements for the Future," provides insight into the way the founder's plans shaped the unique educational and cultural institution of today.

In his forthright and honest autobiography, St. Louis Cardinal, World Series, and Super Bowl broadcaster Jack Buck entertains all of his fans once more in a different setting. Jack Buck: "That's a Winner!" does more than entertain, however. It provides readers with an inside look at a man they have listened to so often, they consider him part of the family.

seems a bit "all over the place". But, reading this book
is definitely a pleasure.
The voice of St. Louis.......2002-06-21
What an inspiration Jack Buck is to all of St. Louis. Wouldn't we all like to be remembered as a truly happy person, just a nice guy? That is who and what Jack Buck was. We are richer for having known him in our lives, and thankful he shared this essay with all of us. Jack Buck loved St. Louis, but that love is returned 100 fold to Jack Buck. He's a winner!

Underwhelming.......2002-05-25
Picking up the autobiography of legendary baseball announcer Jack Buck, you'd think you're in for a light summer read full of good-natured homilies, humorous anecdotes, and "I was there" accounts of great games and players. That doesn't set the bar very high but would make for a good baseball book. "That's A Winner" doesn't deliver on even these modest expectations. First, Buck himself doesn't come across as a very likeable guy. Free with his back-handed criticisms, judgmental of others, once slamming the door in the face of a desperate pregnant woman, and generally keeping his head down as the inveterate corporate guy trying to keep his job. Second, he doesn't really have much to offer. Less than half the book is about baseball, so the reader has to wade through chapters on Buck's youth aboard a boat, in World War II, going to school, reciting names of family and friends as though reading a phone book. There are futile discussions of Castro and the death penalty and Vietnam, issues to which Buck brings no insight and that merely serve to distract the reader looking for some sports. Third, when the baseball finally comes, it's feeble and fleeting. A few thoughts on drugs use in the late 1970s, praise for Whitey Herzog and Ozzie Smith, and that's about it. For a guy who's been around some of the greatest players in the history of the game and become famous for his steady deep-voiced announcing, Buck has written a book that manages to suck the life out of the games and players. No stories, no funny anecdotes, nothing to interest a fan. If you're researching Buck's life and need to know about his military service, this is the book for you. If you want to pass a weekend with a good baseball book, pick up Roger Angell instead.
Jack Buck--Hall of Famer.......2002-02-24
If you want to read about the St. Louis Cardinals any book written by either Jack Buck or Bob Broeg is sure to provide you with solid reporting. Buck has been announcing for the Cardinals since the mid-1950's and spent many of those years with another hall-of-famer named Harry Caray. Jack provides the reader with insights into his army career prior to entering baseball, his many years as an announcer for KMOX radio in St. Louis, and those glorious years with the Cardinals of the 1960's and 1980's. He also provides us with his opinions on the changes that have taken place in both baseball and the world from what it used to be. You don't have to be a Cardinals' fan to enjoy this book. If you enjoy baseball history, reading a book written by the much-respected Jack Buck is an enviable treat.
Book Description
From the nineteenth century articulations of Sojourner Truth to contemporary thinkers like Patricia J. Williams, Black feminists have always recognized the mutual dependence of race and gender. Detailing these connections, Not Just Race, Not Just Gender explores the myriad ways race and gender shape lives and social practices.
Resisting essentialist tendencies, Valerie Smith identifies black feminist theorizing as a strategy of reading rather than located in a particular subjective experience. Her intent is not to deny the validity of black women's lived experience, but rather to resist deploying a uniform model of black women's lives that actually undermines the power of black feminist thought. Whether reading race or gender in the Central Park jogger case or in contemporary media, like Livin' Large, Smith displays critical rigor that promises to change the way we think about race and gender.
Customer Reviews:
true academic divadom!.......2000-10-28
Prof Smith is one of the few contemporary academics who understands that writing can be simultaneously theoretically informed and accessible. This book proves this point. In many ways, the title of the book belies the level of involment in which this book engages: Smith works through the vicissitudes of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation in interesting, and frequently novel, ways. While her discussion of "passing" as a genre and trope of literary investigation/performance, in particular, is important and enlightening, her level of insight into the most "mundane" contemporary topic, such as the Supreme Court or murder trials, provoked my interest even more. It is easy to recommend this book to those interested in topic covered in the title (i.e., "race" and "gender") but wholly another to recommend it to those interested in compelling, involved discussions of the ways class and sexual orientation act as markers of subjectivity. Smith's attention to detail, her desire to see culture anew, and her compelling arguments (sans jargon) make this book a "must have."
The need for an analysis of the "intersections".......2000-05-06
Valerie Smith takes the reader through recent news stories and artistic works, both those written and those portrayed in film, to explore the need for an interdisciplinary and multi-perspective approach to society's analysis of various phenomena. Specifically, she discusses "Intersectionality," a theory proposed by many Black Feminists, to critique portrayals and actual occurrences of events such as interracial rape and Blacks "passing" for white. This approach is unique because it recognizes the importance of understanding an event from the perspectives of race, gender, class, sexual orientation, simultaneously. Smith's discussion of contemporary events (e.g., the Central Park Rape Case, the OJ trial, and the Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill hearings) combined with the critiques of various books and films, shows the reader how film often portrays life, but more importantly, how real life events are often misinterpreted by what is portrayed in popular culture. Despite being a complicated book, Smith provides a convincing argument for the need for this multi-perspective approach. I personally found the chapter on "passing" to be particularly fascinating. I highly recommend this book for those who enjoy an academic, interdisciplinary approach to contemporary issues.

This five-volume discography provides a listing of all recordings made or issued by the Mercury label and its subsidiaries (Blue Rock, Cumberland, Emarcy, Fontana, Limelight, Philips, Smash, and Wing) as well as leased and purchased materials and recordings by independent labels distributed by Mercury. Much of the discography is devoted to recording session listings, and listings provide details on personnel and recording date as well as master and issue numbers. In addition to providing details on stereo/mono master number equivalences, and information on various formats, the fifth volume concludes with a general artist index, including all the names which appear in the earlier volumes. This discography is invaluable to all who seek details on the music and artists recorded in the second half of the 20th century.
Book Description
An amazingly clever book of sixty-five challenging two-minute forensic science puzzles, The Little Book of Bathroom Crime Puzzles is the perfect distraction for the mystery lover with a few minutes to spare. Using deductive logic, readers solve mysteries using only the information provided in the immediate crime scene. Each story is presented in a two-page spread. Part of The Little Book of Bathroom series, this collection of brilliant crime stories has the added appeal of being a type of brainteaser that will be very popular with mystery buffs and fans of hit shows like CSI and Law and Order.
Customer Reviews:
A Big Disappointment.......2007-02-15
I had high hopes for this book, since I read and enjoy so many crime novels. Although well written, the book doesn't live up to expectations.
The fatal flaw is that in far too many instances, information that is vital to solving the crime isn't in the information given to the reader. For example, one story hinges on something that falls out of a woman's purse. The story mentions only that the woman drops her purse and the contents spill out. Without knowing what is inside, it's impossible to know how it relates to the story. It's one thing to use deductive reasoning to solve a puzzle, and quite another to have to be able to use ESP. This book could have been a lot better.
Huge Disappointment.......2007-01-25
The crime stories do not give you enough information to solve the crime. Each puzzle is about two pages long with the whole first page just being needless dialogue. For example, in one case a woman has just lost her mother when she allegedly kills her father. How do we know she killed her father? According to the solution page we were supposed to figure out that the woman is looking for the stranger. She's a psychopath who got attached to a stranger at her mother's funeral, tried to find him but couldn't track him down. So to bring the stranger to her she kills her father hoping the stranger would attend the father's funeral as well. That isn't just a stretch that's quite a leap. I chose this book for my Criminal Justice class. I like to give them puzzles that include forensic scenes and a little something called evidence and have them solve it. This book does not provide evidence. In another example, a robber kills two people at a store with no one in the room and no videotape in the camera, how was it solved. Without implying the solution at all in the reading you are supposed to discover that a single store clerk happened to be in the video room at the time and witnessed the shootings. Very disappointing.
The Little Book of Bathroom Crime Puzzles.......2007-01-12
I bought this for my sister who loves all the CSI shows on television. I have heard no comment of this book yet.

Now, in this fully revised and updated edition of the best-seller, you can quickly garner resume-writing wisdom by following ten easy steps to a damn good resume. Also included are completely new sections on formatting resumes and submitting resumes over the Internet. Here is a resume guide you can count on to get that resume done fast and get it done right.
Customer Reviews:
Non Fiction.......2007-09-03
The Damn Good Resume Guide : a Crash Course in Resume Writing is definitely a useful book, and well done. It has a lot of examples of different styles and types of document that you can use a basis for something of your own.
Definitely worth getting if you want some advice in this area.
Very useful tool for a beginner.......2007-05-14
Having not written a real resume before, this was the perfect tool for me. I was able to construct a good resume in two days and have already gotten multiple job interviews using it.
The name says it all!.......2003-06-07
I bought this book back in the mid-1990's when I was looking to make a career shift. To say that the guide is merely effective would be an understatement. This guide is AWESOME! If you follow the instructions and utilize the layouts in the examples for the type of job you are seeking, you will soon find your resume will consistently float to the top of the pile at nearly every place you apply. You WILL get phone calls! Of course, the rest is up to you -- a resume alone will not get you the job. But, when properly written and designed, they will help you get your foot in the door. I used this book to help me craft a resume for an out-of-work friend who was always amazed at how easy it was for me to locate employement, and he, too, started getting phone calls. He was employed within a month.
USE IT! IT WORKS!
Best if you are in a hurry........2003-03-01
This book has ten steps to writing a good resume. For those of you who might think that this is too many, everything is so concisely written that it is easy to get through the book in a day and end up with a great resume. Other books on resumes that I have read fill up their pages with fluff or well-duh information, not so this book. Although some may complain about the seemingly lack of variety in the jobs showcased (I tend to disagree), the ten steps themselves may be applied to a resume for any job. The only drawback to the sample resumes in this book that I can see is that they are a bit wordy (which contrasts with the rest of the book). However, you can aways trim the fat in your own resume.
I recommend this book to everyone, but especially to people that want a consise explanation of how to write a resume, and/or someone that needs to produce a resume in a short amount of time.
Brief Book that Really Helps.......2003-02-16
This short book describes ten steps to wriging resumes. Examples include general resumes, student resumes, and military transition resumes. Has a list of action verbs. Employers comment on some of the resumes.
