Book Description
The boom time for Indiana politicians on the national scene came during the twenty-six elections from 1840 to 1940. Nearly 60 percent of the presidential campaigns during that century-even without counting the Indiana-raised Abraham Lincoln's two campaigns-had Hoosiers on the tickets. This well-illustrated booklet, written to accompany a traveling exhibition, features presidential races from William Henry Harrison's "log cabin and hard cider" campaign to Wendell Willkie's campaign against Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1940.
Book Description
For a moment Dick Beardsley became the most famous runner in the world by losing a race. In the 1982 Boston Marathon, Beardsley, foiled by a motorcycle that cut him off, finished two seconds behind Alberto Salazar in one of the most memorable contests in marathon history. Staying the Course recounts that race and the difficult years that followed, including his recovery from a near-fatal farm accident, his subsequent addiction to painkillers, and a public arrest for forging prescriptions. His story of overcoming obstacles speaks to anyone who loves competition, who has survived catastrophe, or who has pursued a seemingly impossible goal.

5 Stars as a running/marathon book.......2007-02-12
Yessiree, I give it 5 stars as a running book. I was finding I was docking some books and CDs; because I approached it like, is it perfect enough to get the highest rating like a Shakespeare play or a symphony?
I go with the genre it belongs too; and too, I'd say those who have had substance abuse/alcohol problems would find it inspiring too; cause Dick became addicted to pain killers; and did some things; that were indeed wrong.
It's a good book for athletes, cause Dick's body did start to break down some; even away from his being prone to some bad accidents. It makes me ponder, we hear about so many athletes who later end up being not in the best shape because of their sports career, say like Larry Bird. It makes you think, it's great to run that great Boston Marathon in '82; but is it worth it in the long run.
I agree, the book may have minor blemishes, might be choppy in parts in the latter half of the book, but it shouldn't keep anyone from reading it, indeed, some of this could have been expanded on.
It's a good book, kind of for your couples too; I mean, I admire his wife, Maureen, for staying with Dick; for her care, love and also standing up to him some.
I definitely, would like to read "Duel in the Sun" to continue reading on Mr. Beardsley, really, along with his rival at the Boston Marathon, Alberto Salazar and along with "Pre" Prefontaine himself; there certainly is more to read on these famous track runners from America.
As Dean Karnazes' book UltraMarathon Man is getting to be compulsory reading for Greeks (but not only them of course), I think Minnesotans and those from the surrounding areas should read this one, especially if they are interested in the sport.
Beardsley reminds me a bit of the great American cyclist from the turn of the century (meaning near 1900) Major Taylor, in that his glory descended into lows.
After going through this book, I am still contemplating parts of it and how we and history will see Dick, but I definitely would wish him and his family the best. Some parts of it, really are astonishing; and it is astonishing as a whole. He certainly has given a lot to the Marathon.
Motivational.......2007-01-24
I have heard Dick Beardsley speak and he is awesome. I purchased his book to give for gifts at Christmas time. He has persevered through the toughest of obstacles and is still standing with his wife by his side!
Dick Beardsley's book.......2007-01-10
My husband is a marathon runner & enjoys reading. We have met Dick Bearsley when we ran the Detroit Lakes Half marathon. My husband really enjoyed this book. He learned alot about Dick Beardsley & his marathons.
Dick Beardsley Fans.......2006-11-06
Very well written book! It shows the high and low of Dick Beardsley's running career and life. It is a very quick read, with no slow sections. It might be the best book about running that I have read.
Run Tall and Stay Strong.......2004-03-30
This book is about the life of a runner named Dick Beardsley. It talks about his life goals in running and how he got into a bad habbit of using pain killers. The book takes place in the mainland, and not in a certain place because he traveled a lot to race. See i am a runner so i like the book because it gave me the motivation to go on when the going gets tough. If i compare this book to other book i would say it is not the best running book i have read but, it is better than the other types of books i have read. I think if you are a runner you will really like the book cause it teaches you to be tough in a race and some pointers on how to run marathons. If you do not run i dont think you will have a strong liking with this book. It can get kind of boring a some parts, but the parts that tell about his races really made me want to read on, so if you are a runner i think this book is better for you than if you are not a runner. So be a runner!

The GSD - there IS no other dog!!!.......2006-08-27
Nice book. A really good intro to the GSD. Really, I like the fact that the authors mention that the GSD is a great all around dog that needs something to do. They stress training, not mean training, but positive training. This dog is the ultimate dog.
Very mediocre book. I expected more.......2001-03-15
Thin book with Good pictures, very nice words about GS dog very little obidience and not much about dog phsycology. No good examples. Very compact book. If you want more comprehensive info on GS dog look somewhere else. this book is just a touch up on most common topics.
The Good Shepherd is Great.......2001-02-03
This book contains just what the person contemplating getting a German Shepherd Dog needs. I've owned German Shepherds all my life and know a great deal about the breed. This book gives everything you need to be a successful and proud GSD owner. Easy to read and understand. Great book for experienced GSD owners too. Pete Brevik
I couldn't put this book down!.......2001-01-12
I have been looking at getting a dog for the last six months and have just recently focused on the German Shepherd Dog. There are a ton of available books out there, and I'm sure there are many very good ones. This one caught my eye, however, becuase its co-written by "Uncle Matty", who I first saw on his PBS show "Woof! It's a dog's life". The care and love he showered the dogs on the show, especially the ones with "behaviour problems" endeared him to me from the start. He brings the same warmth and compassion to "The Good Shepherd", and includes loads of useful info as well. He is also very practical about what kind of dog the GSD is and what kind of person the owner needs to be. Honest and perceptive, this book convinced me that the German Shepherd dog is the right best friend for me!
It is about German Shepherd Dogs!.......2000-01-30
Many reviews I read for other books about breeds criticized them for being very generic, with barely one chapter about the breed itself. This entire book is about the German Shepherd! The book's table of contents illustrates what I mean. 1)Meet the German Shepherd Dog 2)A Bit of History 3)Amazing German Shepherds 4)The Shepherd Bond 5)Shepherd Gear (What Your dog Needs) 6)Feeding Your dog 7)House-Breaking Your German Shepherd Dog 8)Obedience-Training Your German Shepherd 9)German Shepherd Behavior Problems 10)Keeping Your German Shepherd Dog Healthy 11)Canine Medical Conditions 12)Medical Problems Common to the German Shepherd Dog 13)Home Medical Care 14)The Most-Asked Questions About the German Shepherd Dog Appendix: Guide Dog Schools

German Shepherds.......2007-06-27
This is a good book with practical information. It is not very in depth but is still quite useful.
Some what disappointing.......2006-03-15
This book has a lot of very good information of taking care of your dogs health (Although most of the advice would apply to any dog). I was particularly disappointed in the section on puppy selection which was my main reason for buying this book. Very superficial information.

Customer Reviews:
Good Basic Book .......2006-09-05
This is a good basic book to learn about the German Shepherd breed in 80 pages or less. The pictures alone will convince you that this dog is not only beautiful but intelligent.
There is a brief history here about GSDs. The author clearly loves the breed (as do I) and has the credentials to support his opinions and recommendations. I also appreciated the information he provides about health issues beyond the usual complaints of hip dysplasia.
There are clearly other books written in more depth about training and feeding and no one should expect this book to do more than provide basic information on those subjects.
The dogs pictured also seem to be more the dogs bred for show rather than working dogs and there is not much discussion about the difference.
All around it is a good little book for someone interested in learning about the breed.

"The great majority of people are more rational and make fewer mistakes in promoting their own interests than even well-intentioned government officials," writes this impressive couple (Gary won the 1992 Nobel Prize for Economics). The short, column-length essays that make up this volume first appeared in Business Week magazine and show for a popular audience how market incentives influence human behavior in countless ways. The Beckers criticize centralized planning, racial quotas and trade tariffs, and endorse drug legalization, privatized social security and school vouchers. They also veer into unexpected terrain, addressing religion, sports and marriage with keen insight.
Book Description
From economics Nobel Laureate Gary Becker and historian Guity Nashat Becker comes this collection of the economist's popular BusinessWeek columns. These 138 essays have fueled numerous debates, touching on hot-button issues from crime to organization of sports. The Beckers' surprising--and uncompromising--positions on drugs ("legalize them"), immigration ("auction off immigration slots"), welfare ("curtail it sharply"), and other topics provide a provocative commentary on our times.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to read everyday economics.......2007-05-18
Nobel Prize winner Gary Becker published this collection of articles in the mid1990s. Even if dated, the book is a high-quality and straightforward way to understand basic economics and apply economic theory and principles to daily life. Most of the articles are interesting, it is easy to read both in content and length, the writing is consistently fine and the analysis insightful. It also sparked the vast amount of more recent books of the same fashion like Harford's Undercover economist, Landsburg's Armchair economist, Friedman's Hidden order or Leavitt's Freakonomics. Recommended.
Very readable, very practical.......2007-01-10
This book brings economic theories down to earth. The Beckers are excellent writers and the book is easy to read because it is broken down into short segments. The book would be great as supplementary reading for a principles of economics class.
Becker's "Economics of Life".......2006-03-10
This is a great read. Although outdated, it still carries lots of potent articles from the man who mastered bringing economics to the masses. Being a collection of short articles, it sometimes leaves you wishing that Becker had gone into more detail with his arguments, though.
Dated, repetitive, superficial.......2006-01-15
I bought this book with great expectation but this book failed to meet it. The topics are wide ranging but most of the arguments are based on few assumptions such as individuals behave rationally and each person can decide what is good for them independent of family and social influences. I find these assumptions overtly simplistic and both social scientists and later economists question such assumptions. After reading this book, I could not but help wonder author's political leaning. If you want books that are incisive, understandable and readable, The Tipping point, Freakonomics are great books. To a certain extent, the wide breadth of topics itself makes it difficult to avoid repetition but in that case editors should have been more ruthless.
Good, but the columns are getting old.......2005-11-17
Based on Becker's columns in Business Week, the book is starting to suffer from the fact that the columns are dating, and that any book made up of columns is bound to get a bit repetitive and disjointed.
That said, the original columns are well-written and often provocative. It's not the best introduction to Becker's economics, which is more distinctive than this material, but it is a good read.
