Suprisingly sweet.......2007-07-22
What I thought would be a tawdry tell-all, turned out to actually be a sweet look back at the career of probably the greatest valet/female manager in the history of professional wrestling. Like many other who have read it, my favorite recollections were of her love story with Eddie Gilbert. With the volatile nature of professional wrestling, I really believe that if Missy and Eddie had met under different circumstances and in a different profession...Eddie would still be alive and they would still be married, with children and enjoying a life together. And somehow, I think Missy would agree.
A good book as far as wrestling publications go, but reading it disarmed me. I thought I was going to get a lot of dirt, and what I got was totally different...and refreshingly welcome.
Missy Hyatt, First Lady of Wrestling.......2006-09-28
It was nice to read about the expereinces of Missy Hyatt in the world of Professional Wrestling. Up until the WWE became the monopoly in Pro wrestling, wrestling has always been my number one passion, and my favorite days were in the late 80s to mid 90's, although I grew up on wrestling in the early 70's with Ray Stevens, Pat Patterson, and Big Time Wrestling in the Bay Area.
Anyhow, reading Missy's personal and professional life in the lime light was fun, and also to read about the tragedies of losing her ex-husband and the relationship problems that she endured helped to see her as a real person who was learning from the depths of life which leads one to grow, develop, and mature.
Finally, the book is a nice blend of the excitement associated with life in the fast lane and coming to terms with the life fans don't see when the camera is off.
Brian Jensen, Ph.D.
You gotta love Missy.......2006-01-30
Missy Hyatt was a wrestling diva before there were wrestling divas. Yet still, many think she is the best of all-time and I would have a hard time arguing with that opinion.
In her career, Missy has seen and done it all. She was worked with all of the greats such as Flair, McMahon, PS Hayes, and Eddie Gilbert. Missy tells many wrestling stories and many non-wrestling stories. While she does dish dirt, she never brings it to a sleazy level. I love the blurbs about Roberts, Duggan, Von Erich and on and on.
She could feel bitter about being the one to set the table for today's divas, while never totally prospering like they are, but Missy just seems to have a positive outlook. Missy gives some opinions on today's divas without resorting to being catty.
Missy had packed a lot into her life up to the publication of this book. She does a pretty good job in letting the reader relive the moments with her. She has also packed quite a lot into her life after this book and I am hoping for the sequel!
Cross between a diary and little black book.......2005-07-16
This has to be every man's worst nightmare-- a woman who has dated pretty much everyone has decided to write a tell-all. I
can only imagine how nervous these guys were in the days leading up to the release date. The book can be defined as a cross between Missy's diary and her little black book. It's pretty much what anybody would expect it to be, dishing the dirt on some of the biggest names in and out of professional wrestling.
Here's a brief rundown of the men with whom Missy has engaged in "sexual relations": Tommy Rich; Jake Roberts (gave her
cocaine and halcyons); Hollywood John Tatum; Road Warrior Hawk (slept with him to get even with Jake for dumping her);
Hotstuff Eddie Gilbert (the love of her life); Dr. Tom Pritchard (slept with him to get even with Gilbert-- see a pattern here?); Atlanta Falcons' Bill Fralic; Jason Hervey of The Wonder Years ("...money was a big part of our relationship."); The Philadelphia Flyers' Rod BrindÁmour ("...had to put a bag over his head- mentally..."), Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly (this poor guy really comes to take a beating in this book); Raven; Eric Watts (slept with him because "I didn't have time to do my laundry"); Brutus Beefcake; Scott Putski ("...like driving a Ferrari with a volkswagon engine. You rev it once, and it stalls."); Val Venis ("...shortest, lamest sex I'd ever had."); as well as numerous football and hockey players-- WHEW. If the rumor mill is to be believed, there are many more names missing from this list. Brian Pillman is never mentioned although she has appeared in a number of his memorial events, and Tom Zenk makes a veiled reference to a "menage" on the back of the book. My guess is that Pillman was excluded out of respect to his widow and children. Also, despite leasing an apartment just to be next door to Buff Bagwell, who had a girlfriend at the time, nothing sexual is ever mentioned.
The sexual exploits aside (which bears mentioning in this review only because it comprises the bulk of the book), Missy is
very candid in her views of the people and the goings-on in the business. For anyone who has read a wrestling biography you
will quickly come (sorry Jim Kelly) to realize that these are not regular/everyday folks. Terry Funk --a legend in this
profession who is just finishing his own book-- once told Missy that "...if (she) ever got stabbed after a match, (she) should take it as a compliment..." Years later Missy was almost stabbed before a match, and wonders aloud how she should take that. Ric Flair is referred to as a perv who loved to show everybody his penis. This is pretty much the same impression I was left with after reading Flair's own biography (a great read by the way). Even WCW owner Ted Turner comes across as a perv (surprise, surprise) as Missy recounts how he grabbed her ass and invited her to mud wrestle the first time they met.
The most baffling story however, even by wrestling standards, was when Freebird Buddy Roberts was caught attempting to urinate on Missy as she was getting ready to shower. Apparently "...Freebirds always pee on people they like. It's like a privilege... a ritual, a sign of respect." I'm not quite sure how to respond to that.
This was an enjoyable, easy read -- about a day and a half. Missy doesn't pretend to be anything she isn't which I appreciate in any autobiography. She openly admits that her in-ring persona was very close to the real life Melissa Hiatt. She admits to being a prima-donna who openly used her sexuality to get what and who she wanted. Arguably she was the hottest thing going before the days of Sunny, Sable and all the modern day Divas. The only glaring omissions that I thought should have
been covered was the ridiculous amount of work she has had done to her face in recent years, and her venture into internet
porn. It's a shame that such a beautiful woman has taken the path so many others have, and butchered herself in the quest to
stay young-- you'll know what I mean when you see the pictures. Aside from that I'd say definitely pick this one up.
Missy Hyatt vs Melissa Hiatt.......2005-07-12
Melissa Hiatt jumps into the wrestling scene in the 1980s and becomes the fictional Missy Hyatt, hieress to the Hyatt hotels. Here we have a book that rides the successful coattails of Mick Foley's autobiographies. Everyone is writing a book now and the market will quickly become saturated with crappy biographies from professional wrestlers. This one is borderline. It's certainly an enjoyable and very quick read and covers Hyatt's career from WCCW to UWF to WWF and WCW then ending up in ECW before calling it quits in anything 'big time'.
She does well in filling in anecdotes on her journey through wrestling with her first contact on going downtown with Tommy "Wildfire" Rich. The stories are much more interesting than her sexual exploits which almost seems to be straight up name dropping, not sure if that's something to be proud of. We see Jake Roberts, Road Warrior Hawk (twice), John Tatum, Eddie Gilbert, Dr Tom Pritchard, Eric Watts among others like Jason Hervey and some football players (which includes a spontaneous launch involving Jim Kelly).
The book may have been better had she left these out or went into more detail but the actual focus of the book is how this attractive young woman joins wrestling without being a wrestler herself. She makes it plain the she was a gimmick valet often used only to fend for her man from opposing valets that were popular through the 80s. She also puts forth that there is a difference between her persona of Missy Hyatt and her true self Melissa Hiatt which shows through when she talks of Eddie Gilbert's sudden death.
She goes through the trials of working with bad relationships among fellow wrestling personas and her final destination into college to earn a degree. It's good to see there is someone that had the brains enough to know wrestling isn't a forever thing except for the few individuals that make superstardom and rake in the cash. The majority of wrestlers never see the big time or only get a fleeting glimpse of it, so it's good to see that Hiatt had the wisdom to turn a passion into a stepping stone and progress herself for life after wrestling. Afterall, do you really want to see the desirable Missy Hyatt lowered to the demeaning antics of Fabulous Moolah and Mae Young nowadays?

"When it was released in 1955, the film Rebel Without a Cause had a revolutionary impact on moviemaking and youth culture, virtually giving birth to our concept of the American teenager. For the first time, Live Fast, Die Young tells the complete story of the explosive making of Rebel, a film that has rocked every generation since its release. Set against a backdrop of the Atomic Age and an old Hollywood studio system on the verge of collapse, it vividly evokes the cataclysmic, immensely influential meeting of four of Hollywood's most passionate artists. When James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, and director Nicholas Ray converged, each was at a crucial point in his or her career. The young actors were grappling with fame, their burgeoning sexuality, and increasingly reckless behavior. As Ray engaged his cast in physical melees and psychosexual seductions of startling intensity, the on- and off-set relationships between his ambitious young actors ignited, sending a shock wave through the film. Through interviews with the surviving members of the cast and crew and firsthand access to both personal and studio archives, Lawrence Frascella and Al Weisel reveal Rebel's true drama -- the director's affair with sixteen-year-old Wood, his tempestuous ""spiritual marriage"" with Dean, and his role in awakening the latent homosexuality of Mineo, who would become the first gay teenager to appear on film. Complete with photographs, Live Fast, Die Young tells the absorbing inside story of an unforgettable and absolutely essential American film -- a story that is, in many ways, as provocative as the film itself. Rebel, Rebel.......2007-07-18
Wrangling teen idols to make a classic movie
If you're into movies, and classics, or more specifically, misunderstood classics, and you have any interest in James Dean, then Lawrence Frascella and Al Weisel's Live Fast, Die Young: The Wild Ride of Making Rebel Without a Cause is required reading.
Of course, as a reformed "Deaner" who's read every biography about the icon, much of the information about 1950s film star James Dean, whose died in a car accident only days after completing his third movie, isn't new.
Yet when woven with biographical accounts of Rebel co-stars Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, and director Nicholas Ray, Live Fast, Die Young becomes compelling reading, mostly through its swift and meticulously researched details (shown in 50 pages of bibliographical notes) that take us sequentially through the pre-production, daily shooting schedule, ups and downs and sometimes lurid behind the scenes drama that took place through the making of a pivotal film that defined the "teenager" in pop culture, and established post-war adolescent angst as a social phenomenon.
Dean, known for his moody temperament, over-the-top method acting, and palpable inferiority complex to contemporary Marlon Brando, gets his now-famous behaviors contextualized. But what has been forgotten among the piles of gossip magazines through the decades, is how Dean, working closely with director Ray, helped shape Rebel into its unique teen-focused originality.
Commentary from surviving actors like Corey Allen, who played Buzz, the gang nemesis of Jim Stark, Dean's character, offers a grounded perspective to the mythologized stories of Dean, Wood, and Mineo, who all died under tragic circumstances. Allen recounts the competitive atmosphere for camera time (Nick Adams being the biggest ham), and the choreography of the opening knife fight (originally shot in black and white, studio executives pushed to move to the then-new color Cinemascope after watching a rough cut. The entire first scene was re-shot).
The three main character's lives reflected strongly on their private lives at the time. Judy's (Wood) advanced sexuality, Jim Stark's (Dean) longing to befriend Buzz rather than fight him, and Plato's (Mineo) adoration of Stark.
Authors Frascella and Weisel, who both thank their male partners in the book's acknowledgements, are therefore presumably gay. But they show a restrained tone in laying proof to the bisexuality of star Dean, focusing on the actual events surrounding the film's subtle successes at revealing the eroticism lurking under the surface of malcontent violent kids.
It's Sal Mineo who shines when he realizes he is, in effect, cinema's first gay teenager. Never exactly in the closet, Mineo's Plato becomes an icon of shy sensitivity and undefined sexuality.
As the book winds through the travails of filming a revolutionary film under the pressures of studio executives, director Ray's own complex personal problems are no less dramatic, ranging from alcoholism to the shame of enduring an affair between his second wife, who seduced his son from his first marriage, to his illegal affair with a teenage Natalie Wood (who was also having a sexual affair with co-star Dennis Hopper).
That the film ever managed to become the classic it was lies largely to this rare collaborative process that Ray nurtured in a time when Hollywood -barely over the dread of McCarthyism and its related blacklist- was anything but collaborative.
While often times abusive and erratic, and even boastful - years later he would take credit for scenes and ideas proposed by screenwriters and actors- Ray is shown as a maverick who made his mark, despite his eventual downfall, by having created more than a great film, but a document of a culture at a pivotal moment. Frascella and Weisel's thorough work shows readers how it happened.
The definitive book on the film........2006-12-12
Rebel Without a Cause almost defined what teenagers were supposed to be when it appeared in the middle 1950. Here was the complete antithesis of the Father Knows Best type of show. It featured three young starts that seemed destined for greatness: Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, and James Dean. Strangely enough, all three of them died, quite young, and not by natural causes.
This book is about the making of that movie. It features interviews with the surviving members of the cast and crew and the authors had firsthand access to both personal and studio archives.
This is a rather remarkable book in that it was written so long after the film. It reads like the authors knew and were involved with the people making the movie it tells an extraordinary story. It's very well done, so far as I am concerned, the definitive film on the movie.
The Definitive Rebel Book, Now and Forever.......2006-05-26
I want to start my review out by saying that I seriously doubt that there will ever be another book like this on Rebel Without A Cause. There certainly hasn't been anything like it in the past. This classic film deserves a book like this and I'm surprised that one was so long in coming. This book is exhaustively researched. Every detail of Rebel from its conception to its filming to its release to its cultural impact is detailed. New interviews with surviving cast and crew members added depth and perspective. The films 3 main stars-James, Natalie and Sal , And Director Nick Ray's experiences making the film are also recounted along with a Chapter each about their lives and fates after Rebel, but the portraits of them are not super deep with perhaps the exception being Nick Ray. The book is more about the evolution and the ultimate impact of Rebel than about the Actors themselves.
The one complaint I have about this book is that at times I think it relied too much on unproven sensationalism about James Dean. Particularly a passage in which an Actor claims that James and Jack Simmons were hitting on him, but what sounded like a perfect innocent invitation to visit the house they were living in to me.
But this is a book that should be on any Rebel fans bookshelf.
Close to the Knives.......2006-03-29
I loved reading this book, for most of the reasons outlined by the other reviewers. The organization is superb, breaking down the wealth of material into discrete units, sometimes arranged by theme, sometimes by a central event. The intelligence of the sorting out leads to a greater understanding of the events portrayed in the book, from the inception of the general idea (to make a picture about teenagers, then a new subject for film) all the way to the ongoing and continuing myth of REBEL.
One thing leads to another, organically speaking. The book convinces me that the central mainspring of the success of REBEL was not, perhaps, James Dean, but Natalie Wood, desperate to prove she wasn't a child any longer, throwing herself at director Nicholas Ray who, in a crazy display of grand seigneurial privilege, took her as his lover. Was Wood feeling any sexual excitement in this union, or was she just trying to get back at her horrible mother, Maria Gurdin? Ever since Suzanne Finstad's biography of Wood revealed this affair with Nick Ray, together with the story of Wood being raped by a still-living Hollywood leading man, it's hard to look at REBEL without thinking of Judy as the victim of sexual abuse "acting out" her fantasies of sexual liberation and pleasure, but not able to really get any for herself.
I appreciated the care the authors took in interviewing just about everyone connected to the movie, including the gang members, some of whom you hardly notice in the movie. But as it happens, and I wonder if someday the extra footage will turn up, many of the gang members had bigger scenes with lots of dialogue, when the shooting started Warners wasn't going to pay for anything but black and white, and then a third of the way through they decided to scrap the b/w footage and go with color. They threw the baby out with the bathwater in this one, for wouldn't you like to see that black and white material? Wonder where it is now? The authors tracked down Steffi Sidney, who was sort of the Tori Spelling of her day in that her dad was a well known Hollywood institution who managed to get her jobs just by laying down the hammer. He wasn't a producer like Aaron Spelling, but even more fearsome, one of LA's top gossip columnists, a man called Sidney Skolsky. Steffi is particularly observant about the day to day shooting of REBEL, and her pointed comments are always trenchant and super-funny.
I hear today in the news that Warners has unearthed test footage of Marlon Brando playing scenes from a version of REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE that never got made, seven or eight years before the present one! And that they will be issuing this screentest as an extra to the DVD of STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE! I bet the authors of LIVE FAST, DIE YOUNG are kicking themselves that they didn't get to view this footage--indeed they don't seem to have been aware such a test even existed, or that the movie was almost made in 1948! Otherwise they are an omniscient pair indeed.
Best of the Best.......2006-03-11
This is a wonderfully detailed yet easy to read account of the making of "Rebel Without a Cause." The authors did their homework and did a superb job of compiling the information into an interesting story. No matter if you're a fan of James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo, you'll be rewarded with a glimpse behind the camera at how it all came together. A must read for fans of the stars, director, the film itself or film students in general.

Live Fast, Die Young: The Wild Ride of Making Rebel Without a Cause
ASIN: 0786419768 |
Book Description
This work is a complete history of this classic American film, from idea to script to film. In 1954, troubled director Nicholas Ray chatted at a dinner party about his controversial plan for a film about middle-class juvenile delinquents. He was told of a book, written by a prison psychologist and owned by Warner Bros., called Rebel Without a Cause. Unimpressed after reading it, Ray began writing his own story. Warner Bros. quickly bought it and hired Ray to direct the film.
From the backgrounds of the many players to the pre-production, production, and post-production of the film, the work covers every aspect of Rebel Without a Cause from its rudiments to the 1955 Oscars: the selection of cast and crew, legal fights, preparatory research, changing screenwriters and the many variations of the story, location scouting, auditions, the writing of the score, script readings, difficulties with the censors, romances and fights, shot-by-shot analyses of the directing, editing, screenings, and, of course, its star's death. Dozens of intimate anecdotes fill the work with every detail from wardrobe decisions to James Dean's pranks to the Air Pollution Control Board's opposition to the final car crashes. An epilogue discusses the possible sequels, rights conflicts, documentaries, musicals, and spin-off attempts, and offers concluding words on the cast and crew. Sources include production records, publicity releases, scripts, newspapers, and discu! ssions with Stewart Stern. An appendix offers two unpublished letters from Stewart Stern to Nicholas Ray and to Marcus and Ortense Winslow.

A Great Movie Gets a Great Book.......2004-10-31
This excellent book details the entire production history of one of the most important films in American history. I enjoyed the behind-the-scene glimpses, crisply told, and with an incredible amount of information about Rebel Without A Cause. The sheer research involved in the making of this book seems astounding. Most books on film I've read discuss the film as a work of art or provide chatty gossip about the stars. This book really explains how a film gets made. It's an eye-opening tour.

Definitive but not Always Clear.......2006-01-22
This is THE book to have for settling disputes over the rules of games. There is no substitute to have by your side when someone you are playing with makes up a rule and insists it is the way to go. (This cuts both ways. Sometimes I learn the rule I've always used is just something Granny made up so she wouldn't lose, but we won't go there). Thorough rules are given for the standard board games as well as card games.
Emphasis is on defining the rules rather than giving clear explanations of how to play. It is assumed that you already know the game and will be using the book as reference tool when an ambiguity comes up regarding the rules. As thorough and useful as the book is, I feel that, without being any longer, it could be a lot clearer in explaining the basics of most games to people who do not already know how to play them. For instance, I really doubt if four people who want to play bridge could figure out how to play it just by reading THE NEW COMPLETE HOYLE. If what you are looking for is help learning new card games, then I think a book like SCARNE'S ENCYCLOPEDIA OF CARD GAMES would be more useful.
If you are looking for a book to settle all disagreements about the games you play, rather than a book to teach you new games, you cannot beat THE NEW COMPLETE HOYLE. Even if someone writes a better reference book on game rules some day, it won't matter, because it won't be "according to Hoyle." Hoyle's been the standard for 250 years, and it doesn't look like that is going to change any time soon.
Terrific Tome for Card and Board Games.......2002-10-13
More lurid books have I read,
but that goes better unsaid.
But still, just the same,
these rules of the game
is complete from alpha to zed.
Stop arguments with your family. Checkers really does have rules. Learn if you must jump the other guy, if you must move the piece you touch, and precisely when a red queen can be placed on a black king.
No one who plays games should be without "The New Complete Hoyle Revised." It was great 300 years ago (so I'm told) and is
great now.

Authoritative, yes.......2000-02-26
It is true. This book is THE authority when it comes to games of skill or chance, and even games that combine the two (like all games that mean anything to anyone). But this book is too authoritative, almost facistic in its clinging to the rules of each and every game. All games need to grow and expand (or contract) from their traditional settings. This philosophy is not, I suppose by definition, a part of this book. Otherwise ... yes, a perfect book. Of its type.
Great book of Games! Easy to learn instructions!.......1998-07-01

Hoyle makes learning card, dice, and board games fun! There are adult chance and betting games to children's games that bring back memories of your days of charades and fun! Have a blast reading the book, and a better time gathering the guys and playing a round of poker or two. Or three. Or perhaps even five! For the kids, on long car trips, you may say "are we there yet?" Bring a deck of cards, a maximum of ten dice, and your Hoyle book, look up a dice game such as lair dice or a card game like solitare and your parents will be shocked to hear you say "were there already?" For the boring, rainy days, pull out a deck of cards, look up in your Hoyle book a game that you thought you would never learn to play, and learn! The day will whiz by while you take turns with your brother playing war! Ask your sister to roll the die and see about a seven at craps! See? Completely revised, updated, and expanded! It even says so on the cover! The authoritative guide to the official game rules of popular games of skill and chance!

Whether you are looking to end a game of poker without bloodshed or want new ways to use that deck of cards Hoyle is the answer. Before you while away another boring day get cracking and secure a copy of Hoyle's latest.

If you were expecting to get the hoyles book of card games rules, you will be very disappointed with this. It is very out of date, many games are not listed at all, and the rules are insufficient or incorrect even for a simple game like Hearts.
This book is published with very poor quality type, it is very difficult to read.

Very Helpful - Well Organized and Thoughtful.......2000-06-06
There are a lot of books about facilitation skills and techniques. This is one of the best because it is well organized and thoughtful in its presentation. It is very theoretical and does help an exerienced facilitator zero in on areas to improve, but is also useful to the beginner by providing a good framework to work from. The key to success (like so many things) is practice. This is a good guide to get you started on the right foot and to use as a reference over time as your facilitation skills develop.
The Facilitator Excellence Handbook.......2000-03-02
I found thhis book helpful to me as a consultant who is moving in to doing more facilitation. The book contains many specific and practical tools for working with groups while also giving attention to the "softer" side of group dynamics.
