Disappointing.......2007-02-15
I have read much more reader friendly books that incorporate primary source documents. The book was dull and did not provide any new insights or information about an interesting character in the Tudor era.
No embellishments on known facts, a refreshing change........2007-01-20
I will admit that I was skeptical about this book after reading the contrasting feedback left by other readers but after completing the book I feel that Mr. Taylor should be commended for several reasons. First and perhaps that most important to a retired professor of European history as myself is that Mr. Taylor did not follow the same format as many "historians" do by using colorful embellishments to retell a few known facts. The second being that Mr. Taylor also refrained from criticizing other author's lack of information or misuse of. It is clear that Mr. Taylor only recites the sources that he felt were the most accurate. I have learned in 30 years of teaching college level classes that if you present 10 people with 10 primary and secondary sources that you will have 14 different opinions about them. I feel that Taylor's use of the Lane Letters is questionable and after contacting the author, he explained that the publisher omitted a sentence in the introduction indicating the use and source of letters. Nevertheless, the Lane Letters should have been placed in a separate chapter away from the main body of the book, but when they are read as the author intended, they are entertaining. Ill regardless of the rather harsh criticism left by another reader, I would have used the book in my classes if I were still teaching. Publishing Weekly left an accurate feedback and I do feel that there is a fresh approach here that does belong in a library. From what I can see, Mr. Taylor is the first to present all known information about this young lady. I look forward to a revision
Entertaining, but useless as legitimate history.......2006-03-17
Mr Taylor has clearly spent a great deal of time and effort in producing this volume. Unfortunately the result is useless for anything other than entertainment. It cannot in any way be called legitimate "history." The book is replete with flaws, errors and omissions. Mr Taylor relies very heavily on a late-eigtheenth century collection of "letters" published by William Lane through Minerva Press. The collection is tellingly entitled "Lady Jane Grey: An Histoircal TALE"..."tale" being the operative word. Mr Taylor notes that the Lane collection had been "lost" to historians for over 200 years until he "re-discovered" it. There is a good reason why the "letters" were "lost": any trained historian would immediately recognize them as complete fiction. The "letter" from Henry Grey to "Lord Protector" Northumberland, for example, reveals the fiction (p. 18-20, Lane Letter 86). Northumberland was never titled "Lord Protector," and Henry Grey would never have addressed him as such. Any trained historian familiar with the Tudor era would have known this. But Mr Taylor is apparently not a trained historian. This is evident from his bibliography. He has "primary" and "secondary" sources utterly confused. Further, he cites works such as Jane's prayerbook by using a secondary source (a later Harley Manuscript). The original prayerbook is Harley MS 2342, and has been microfilmed. That microfilm is available in many US libraries. Why not look at a microfilm of the original rather than a printed transcription of a later manuscript that simply describes the original? A serious error. And finally, in his bibliography he lists a work as having been written by Guglielmo Facciotti. In actuality, Facciotti was a PRINTER, not an author. He was active in Rome ca. 1592-1637. The AUTHOR of the work cited is actually Giovannni Raviglio-Rosso. Read this book for what it is: a compilation of factual AND FICTIONAL documents that take Jane Grey as their subject. But for legitimate ("real") history, look elsewhere. This book is a perfect example of why amateur historians and sloppy publishers should never be brought together. The result is a complete mess, and leaves readers completely misinformed and confused...and legitimate history teachers scrambling to pick up the pieces.
A great research tool.......2005-04-21
If the book is used as the author indicates it's only purpose is to be, which is for reference, then Mr. Taylor has done a great job of bringing all the literary remains of Lady Jane Grey together in one edition for others to use. Though I do not believe that the "Lane Letters" should have been included, I will commend Mr. Taylor on not following the format that some recent authors have chosen of embellishing a few facts and sensationalizing them to appeal to the masses. I have used this book in my classes and the book is a time saver for my students who often research Tudor history.
Good, but Misleading.......2005-04-03
If you are interested in the turbulance of the Tudor era, this is not a bad book. Unfortunately, there were very few documents from Jane Grey. Her story has fascinated me since I heard of her, yet I know no more about her now than I did before I bought the book. It seems that most of the correspondance is between Anne Grey and Lady Laurana (who wed Edward Courtenay, who many thought would be a good hsuband for Queen Mary)

Book Description
This Boston Bruins master, who played just nine seasons in the NHL, revolutionized the game with his two-way mobility, freewheeling puck movement, and end-to-end (or side-to-side) rushes. He twice led the NHL in scoring an unprecedented feat for his position. He was voted the NHL's MVP three years in a row, and best defenseman eight years in a row. Dozens of vintage photographs and complete stats complete this tribute to an amazing superstar from hockey's golden era.

Book Description
Traces Arliss's life and times through his film work, providing a thoroughly researched and entertaining view of one of the most important, yet neglected figures in film history. The book also reviews the actor's uneasy relationship with screenwriters, his clashes with British film producer Michael Balcon, his championing of young unknowns such as Bette Davis and James Cagney, and his prosecution by the British Government during World War II.
Customer Reviews:
George Arliss--no longer an overlooked major Hollywood star.......2007-09-21
While a major Hollywood luminary of the late 1920s and early 1930s, British-born stage/film star George Arliss (who won an Oscar for 1929's Disraeli) is too little known by modern generations. This detailed biography provides a rich study of Arliss's long life--both on and off camera--bringing the unusual (by Tinseltown standards) leading man into sharp focus.
A book well worth buying and reading!
The Author Speaks on George Arliss!.......2006-04-01
Full Disclosure compels me to say that I am the author so you know already that you won't be getting an exactly impartial viewpoint. My purpose here is two fold: first, to thank the individuals who have taken the time and effort to comment on my Arliss biography/critique. Researching and writing the book was a labor of love and, besides, there's nothing worse than being ignored.
My second reason is to merely add a point of information. As has been stated, very few of George Arliss's films are available on video, either VHS or DVD. But thank heaven for cable stations Turner Classic Movies and the Fox Movie Channel. With a little bit of patience, you can see all 13 of Mr. Arliss's American films on these two stations. Fox has gotten quite generous by running The House of Rothschild (1934) and Cardinal Richelieu (1935) every month, although Fox seems to be stingy about running the finale scene in "Rothschild" in its original Technicolor brilliance. It did show it in color back in 2001, but in the last year or so, Black & White seems to be the rule. Perhaps if we all email Fox, they might change its corporate mind. And while we're at it, let's urge FMC to run Arliss's comedy, The Last Gentleman (1934).
Turner schedules the Warners films, The Man Who Played God, The Working Man, and Voltaire, a couple of times a year. Perhaps with a bit of encouragement, TCM will program Disraeli, Old English, The Green Goddess, The Millionaire, Alexander Hamilton, A Successful Calamity, and The King's Vacation more often than once every few years. Is it possible that George Arliss could be a TCM Star of the Month? We'll never know if we don't ask!
George Arliss Remembered, by John Rogerson, movie enthusiast.......2006-02-02
George Arliss, in his day a top star, is today the least-remembered of any, which makes this book especially welcome. Too bad its style is a bit pedestrian, but it does whet the appetite for Arliss's largely-unavailable output (Amazon has, through its contract supliers, his Oscar-winning "Disrael" and "The Iron Duke" and "Dr. Syn", and Movies Unlimited has "The Guv'ner" and "East Meets West", but his reputed two best, "The House of Rothschild" and "The Man Who Played God" don't seem available anywhere). The book points out Arliss's dedication (he insisted on two weeks's reheasal before shooting, even if he had to pay the Cast himself), sterling character (never a hint of scandal, no marital infidelity, etc), and modesty (he had full charge of all films and often wrote or rewrote screenplays, but insisted on being billed solely as an actor). For further info, see his two autobiographies, "Up the Years from Bloomsbury" and "George Arliss".
George Arliss returns to the limelight.......2005-06-18
Once famous as "The First Gentleman of the Talking Screen" and winner of the Best Actor Oscar (1929/30) for "Disraeli", George Arliss returns to the limelight thanks to the (almost) single-handed efforts of Mr. Fells (Turner Classic Movies also occasionally shows Arliss films). More than a biography, this book places Arliss' personal story of defying conventional wisdom to become successful on stage and screen (silent and sound) in the larger context of Hollywood in the 1920s-30s. Thoroughly researched and elegantly written - in the Arliss tradition!
"George Arliss: The Man Who Played God".......2005-06-18
"George Arliss: The Man Who Played God" was not only an interesting portrait of the man, but also a snapshot of the entertainment industry in general during the 50 years Arliss appeared on stage and film. Although Arliss' career may be obscure to contemporary moviegoers, after reading Mr. Fells' well-researched biography, Arliss' legacy was apparent - both on and off screen - through both his artistic and financial successes. In my choice of reading material, I enjoy being entertained while I'm being educated, and this book certainly met that criteria - I highly recommend it!

Even better than the Wraith Player's Guide.......2000-02-10
Don't be fooled by the title- although it focuses on the dark side of every Wraith, this outstanding book contains tons of important information on all sorts of subjects- from exactly what your Eidolon IS, and when it comes into play, to roleplaying romance and love.
Other important topics covered include exactly how Castigation affects your Shadow- and while your Shadow is by definition your adversary, the isn't always your enemy. There is a lot more to Psyche/Shadow interaction than just "I'm the Good Guy, he's the Bad Guy."
Every Circle of Wraiths should have this one- you owe it to yourselves... and to your Shadows. :)

Out of date.......2001-07-19
I've played mage for a few years now, before third edition graced the shelves, and I found that this book was not terribly helpful. While it had several high points, the extra skills included on a whole could be gained by taking a specialty in an already listed skill. The merit and flaw section was interesting, with the publication of revised and third edition, it's no longer needed. The expanded tradition sections, were helpful, but sense the publication of third edition, they are no longer up to date and to be honest, if you want to know about traditions The Traditions Gathered set of books is a far better resource. While The Book of shadows is an interesting read, it's definitely not a required resource for mage.
A good oldie showing it's age.......2001-03-12
This is a good book which has a lot of information to make your character richer (merits and flaws, extra skills, more detailed information on each Tradition, the Technocracy and others, etc.). However, most of the sections in this book are beginning to show their age, as the information presented here has been revised and updated to much more practical information in several other Mage books. The section with the parables, though, is still one of my favorite Mage reads.
More useful than great.......2000-03-12
The book of shadows, which was written between the publishing of the 1st and second editions of Mage, is at this point slightly "behind the times," especially what with the release of Mage 3rd edition. Somewhere between irrelevant and necessary. Has some good basic material on the various Mage fringes, as well as a lot of expanded stuff for character creation.
Disappointment but bright moments.......1999-11-24
Though an interesting book I found that much of the facts and historical references were poorly researched if researched at all. It appears that this is a useful playing tool but the facts are all wrong.
Great companion to the Mage sourcebook........1998-07-20
This book is invaluable for the new lists of merits and flaws and the new abilities. Unlike some other White Wolf books, this book actually gives lists, not just a few new listings. I constantly refer to this book in character generation. Though some of the new abilities can really be covered by standard abilities, some of them are really helpful. Those and some of the merits and flaws even give me new ideas for characters. A great resource.

ASIN: 0793183049
Release Date: 2004-06-01 |
Book Description
Corporate negotiation is a process like all other business strategies. In today's challenging and ever-changing business environment, it is imperative to understand negotiations from the perspective of both the buyer and the seller. In Strategic Negotiation, Dietmeyer and Kaplan use a research-based approach to negotiation that assists sales professionals in reaching their own business goals, while ensuring that their customers meet budget and professional objectives as well-going beyond win-win to achieve true, measurable business value for all parties at the negotiating table.
The authors use their own strategic, four-step negotiation process to teach sales professionals how to attain quantifiable value in their dealings:
*
Estimating the negotiation. What are the actual issues in the negotiation? Sellers determine the effects, both positive and negative, of a lost deal.
*
Validating the estimation. A fact-finding exercise to confirm the accuracy of previously made assessments.
*
Creating value. Sellers structure a series of deals creating measurable value for parties on both sides of the negotiation. Each offer addresses the essentials but goes on to include additional benefits for the buyer.
*
Dividing value. A presentation of ""multiple equal offers"" is made to buyers, providing more value and choices than they anticipated.
Chapters include worksheets for readers to analyze and evaluate their own negotiations from both a seller's and buyer's point of view.
Customer Reviews:
Effective Negotiation.......2006-12-21
"Strategic Negotiation: A Breakthrough Four-Step Process for Effective Business Negotiation" is a first-rate book that presents the negotiation process methodically, step-by-step, which helps the reader to follow and understand the process. The ideas you learn from the book are very helpful in any negotiating situation, whether one is interviewing for a job, buying a car, leasing a house, making a sell or negotiating between managers and workers for salary increase and conditions of service or a major contract.
The book does a very nice job of laying out the necessary skills as well as giving you the tools you need to be successful at negotiating. The author stresses the need for win-win negotiations in all situations to ensure that all parties are satisfied which augurs well for establishing long term relationships.
Although many of the ideas put forward by the author are not new, the book nevertheless put together the information that those involved in the negotiation process need to muster and thus is a useful companion for those involved in the negotiation process. Going for a "win-at-all cost" approach ensures that you win a battle at the expense of the overall war.
This is a valuable book that can have long-term beneficial effects on your effectiveness in business and personal life.
Strategic Negotiation.......2005-01-25
I have been reading negotiation books for over 20 years. All these books I read were good. But there was something missing in going from a negotiation book to a real business negotiation. "Strategic Negotiation" hits the nail on the head. This book is head and shoulders above any book on negotiation or any negotiation class that I have taken. The book is organized is a very methodical way with subject matter, stories and examples cleverly interwoven thoughout the book. The four-step process actually works.
This is a "must read" for anyone who is serious in being a world-class negotiator.
Inconsequential.......2004-07-06
I really can't believe that they keep writing books like this. I was hoping to get something new but it's the same story with a different package. The writers treat the readers like children and the "process" is nothing more than telling people to prepare for their negotiations. I didn't need another book to tell me that. Getting to Yes and Negotiating Rationally are much better.
great confidence builder.......2004-07-02
I just finished this book and must say that it will make an immense difference in my confidence during customer negotiations. I have read two other books on negotiations and have been through negotiation training at my company and finally I have something I can actually get my arms around, I only wish my customers were using the same process!
Great book, great process.......2004-07-01
I strongly suggest this book, I work very complex global B to B deals and find the step by step analysis easy to follow and at the same time yielding powerful analysis. The writing style made me feel like I was talking directly to the writers.
