3 out of 5 stars Less than it seemed........2006-03-16

A nice little book, over-priced in my opinion, with little that was new for the Romanov fan. It seemed to offer new insights and pictures, but on the whole nothing really worth the asking price.

Book Description

Tsarina Alexandra-hauntingly beautiful, melancholy, obsessed with the occult-was blamed by her contemporaries for the downfall of the Romanovs. But her true nature has eluded previous biographers.Using archival material unavailable before the fall of the Soviet Union, acclaimed historian Carolly Erickson's masterful study brings to life the full dimensions of the Empress's singular psychology: her childhood bereavement, her long struggle to marry Nicholas, the anguish of her pathological shyness, and her increasing dependence on a series of occult mentors, the most notorious of whom was Rasputin. With meticulous care, Erickson has crafted an intimate and richly detailed portrait of an enigmatic historical figure.Unfolding against the turbulent backdrop of Russian history in the last decades before the Revolution of 1917, this engrossing biography draws the reader in to Alexandra's isolated, increasingly troubled interior world. In these pages, the tsarina ceases to be a remote historical figure and becomes a character who lives and breathes.Intimate, rich in detail, carefully researched and informed by a generous imagination, Erickson's page-turning account of Alexandra and her times is a gem of biographical storytelling, as vivid and hard to put down as an enthralling novel.

3 out of 5 stars Alone.......2007-06-18

I have read many books about the Romanov clan and confess I wanted Anastasia to have survived...But this is the only book that deals with Alexandra as a distinct personality. Simply reading about the death of her Mother when she was a small child give tremendous insight into the adult. Alexandra must have been traumatized by the death and probably had a problem with depression the remainder of her life. The trauma occurring when she was at an age where the line between reality and make-believe is so fine would have added to her desire for 'magic' or spiritual help, thus this book has it's place in helping us understand her as a person even if it is not the most entertaining volume to read.

4 out of 5 stars Couldn't put down.......2007-06-16

Maybe because this was the first book I've read on the Romanovs, but I was fascinated with the story of Alexandra and her entire family and the time she lived in. I'd recommend this book highly.

3 out of 5 stars A little disapointed.......2007-06-01

I was a little disapointed with this book. I have liked Carolly Erickson's Bloody Mary and thought this book would be a good one. It was kind of a let down. There was almost no mention of Alexandra's child hood. I would have liked to have known more about it. Did more shape her in childhood to the woman that she did become? There were some things that Ms. Erickson got wrong and didn't seem to catch. When somebody dissapered from the book, there was little or no explenation on what happened to them. I got the impression that Alexandra was hysterical most of the time (some of it with good reason). Some of the hysteria came from her only son, Alexei, being hemophiliac. You feel compassion for this boy, where doctors could do little or nothing for him. Alexandra did have a part in bringing down the Romanov dynasy, by not listening to sound advice. Massie's Nicholas and Alexandra does a better job at explaining Alexandra's personality and what drove her to do what she did.

1 out of 5 stars Absolute Fluff.......2005-10-02

This book was extremely disappointing. There is so little valuable and insightful information about the Tsarina, and what information there is is simply fluff. This book barely skims the surface and leaves so much out, takes so little time to actually analyze information that it leaves more questions than it answers.

If you are looking for a quick read, or an introductory book to Tsarina Alexandra this is it. Otherwise, I highly recommend "Nicholas and Alexandra" by Massie.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Read.......2005-07-04

This book was an excellent purchase if you are looking for a different perspective on the Romanov family. Alexandra is an individual portrayed in many other books as being stern and often times unapproachable. This book provides the background information to explain her upbringing, her relationship with her family (inlcuding many tragedies) and her relationship with the Dowager as well as her childeren. Overall, very readable.

        5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing.......2007-03-10

I just could not put down this book. It is exceptional. THis should be required reading for any history course on Alexandra and Nicholas. What I liked about it was how the author made history interesting and gave life to the people he wrote about. He brings compassion to the subjects and really explains the complexities of WW1. I highly recommend this to anyone interested in the last tsar and tsarina of Russia. It is a very intriguing read.

5 out of 5 stars The Last Empress: The Life and Times of Alexandra Feodorovna, Tsarina of Russia.......2006-02-02

This book is the BEST biography on Alexandra Feodorovna. Very detailed information. I've been a Romanov fan for a long time and when I got this book, it had information I had never heard of before, from her childhood to her bloody end. This is a MUST-HAVE book if you're interested in Alexandra Feodorovna OR the Romanovs. Well done, Greg King!!!

4 out of 5 stars Basically, the Best.......2002-07-22

This book is better than Erickson's in many ways. I did wish
King could have told us more about Alix's childhood and family.
Read Mager's bio of Grand Duchess Elizabeth for a better narrative on this point. Some of King's phrasing is awkward (he
repeats the word "pair" too often when referring to 2 people.
Overall, this is a pretty good book, as long as you consult
other books to flesh it out.

4 out of 5 stars Still not the definitive work.......2001-06-08

This book is a good retelling of the facts, with some new theories added (King's ideas about the influence of the Empress's childhood, for one) and some academic theses give the popular treatment for the first time. On the latter score, this biography, for example, is the first Romanov book which does not repeat the old stereotype that Rasputin was exploiting the trust of the Imperial family for political ends, but rather adopts the more credible line that he simply agreed with their own views. The political context is presented a little superficially, with no attention being given to the Empress's real reasons for selecting particular ministers, and the assumption made (all too easy with hindsight) that she was pursuing an illogical and doomed course. Dominic Lieven's "Nicholas II" is a good alternative picture, locating her strategies firmly in the populist tradition of the later nineteenth century. In some ways the book does not fulfill the promise of its introduction, which hints at a totally new picture. However, it is a good read and a good introduction for newcomers, and the character it presents, if less attractive, is a more lively and interesting one than that in the celebrated 'Nicholas and Alexandra'. It redresses the balance of the latter by actually discussing the Empress's work beyond the political sphere, in particular her interest in girls' education. For a fuller picture of her political role, see Joseph Fuhrmann's footnotes to her edited correspondence with her husband.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling insight into a fascinating historical figure........2001-04-23

In this wonderfully nuanced book, Greg King explores one of the most complex and contraversial figures in Russian history. Alexandra Romanov was universally reviled by the Russian people and scorned by the Russian aristocracy. King does an excellent job of exposing the woman beneath the legend. One the one hand you see the exceptionally devoted wife and mother who desperately fights to preserve her family and their heritage. On the other hand, you see an unyielding and essentially stupid autocrat who is unable and unwilling to accept wise counsel or clearly see the dangers all around her. The story of Rasputin is the perfect example. She remains desperately devoted to the Russian holy man because of her belief that he can save her hemophiliac son despite the overwhelming evidence that he is a serious threat to the empire.

Alexandra is a fascinating subject, and King's balanced analysis of her character and her impact on the history of Russia is excellent. King combines excellent research with complelling story-telling. This book leaves you with a sense of sympathy for such a misunderstood woman and a simultaneous frstration that she was so stubbornly misguided in her attempts to influence political events.

3 out of 5 stars Good subject for a biography report; not a great book.......2006-06-20

My son and I learned about Moe Berg at the Spy Museum in Washington DC (which is well worth a visit). Knowing he would have to write a biography book report in 5th grade, I ordered this book so he could cover something other than just sports. A jewish WWII spy who played pro baseball, spoke multiple languages, had a law degree, studied nuclear physics with Einstein and travelled the world . . . . an athlete and intellectual, eccentric and unusual. Berg's life story is fascinating, easily holding the interest of a fifth grader, and it made a stellar biography report. My son learned a lot about many subjects. So, I recommend the reading this book.

The book itself had some flaws, but Berg's life was interesting enough to get you through the book. A good editor with a heavy pen could have greatly improved the book. The author does not proceed in chronological order, although I found myself expecting it. This failure created confusion at times, and I felt obscured the early part of Moe's spy career. My son and I had to read and re-read, then take notes in chronological order to get the story straight. I felt that the failure to present things chronologically resulted in the author failing to identify the start of Berg's spying. The dates in the text do not always match the dates in the timeline in the book - a further irritant. The author seemed to make much more of Berg's jewish heritage than he seemed to.

This is not a great book, but the subject matter makes it worth a read and it really is a wonderful subject for a biography book report.

                5 out of 5 stars A great book........2000-05-17

I loved this book because it was just like an autobiography, but not in first-person. I never knew that someone can be a outstanding baseball player, but also a sneaky spy.

Although born Giuseppe Guttovergi to a poor, immigrant Italian family, it was as Paul Creston that Giuseppe rose to prominence, becoming one of the most widely performed American composers. Rhythm was a continued subject of research for this composer, and by 1945 he had established a terminology of rhythmic structures, which he observed both in his music and the music of other composers, even writing two books on the subject. This volume presents for the first time a complete descriptive account of the life of the composer, as well as access to currently available materials by and about him.

5 out of 5 stars Principles of Rhythm.......2000-04-17

"Rational Metric Notation" was written toward the end of Paul Creston's life. It is an eccentric book with distracting deliberate misspellings and not really representative of Paul Creston's thought--something of an embarrassment actually. On the other hand, "Principles of Rhythm" is a vital book no musician should overlook. Read Paul Creston's "Principles of Rhythm"; listen to his music whenever you get the chance; and forgive him "Rational Metric Notation."

5 out of 5 stars Paul Creston deserves at least this.......1999-04-19

This is a published master's degree (I think) thesis. Its prose is rather plodding, I'm sorry to say, but its subject is certainly worth treating. It's a very sad thing that the two Paul Creston books referred to above, "Principles of Rhythm" and "Rational Metric Notation" are now unavailable. I've never had a chance to look at "Rational Metric Notation", but in my opinion "Principles of Rhythm" is one the most important books about music ever published and the only logical exposition of rhythm ever published. (By the bye, I'm also rather fond of "Pentatonic Scales for the Jazz-Rock Keyboardist" by Jeff Burns, very much still available.) To sum up, I give "Paul Creston" five stars just for existing.

                      The Flowers of La Grenouille

To think of La Grenouille, one of New York City's finest restaurants, is to think of exquisite food, lush surroundings, and perhaps above all, gorgeous flowers. Ever since its doors opened in 1962, La Grenouille has been known for its peerless bouquets, and in The Flowers of La Grenouille the mystery and the history behind these beautiful flowers are revealed.

Now Charles Masson, proprietor of La Grenouille for eighteen years, affectionately shares the intimate lessons in flower care and aesthetics he learned from his father. In simple language, Charles offers tangible advice for the layman, explaining how to make cut flowers last longer, how to revive a drooping rose, and how to create sensational bouquets, both large and small. He reveals how to allow the flowers to dictate the look of the bouquet, how to pick a suitable container, and how to "knit" stems so that a bouquet holds its shape without artificial support.

Charles's advice is illustrated with charming drawings and more than 50 lush full-color photographs that show off the world-famous flowers in all their glory. Color charts, lists detailing the conditioning tips and materials needed for each flower, and other pithy information are complemented by personal anecdotes about the history of the restaurant and the philosophy behind his father's passion for all things beautiful.

The Flowers of La Grenouille is a fact-filled, practical flower guide and an enchanting tribute to the most renowned floral arrangements in the world.

5 out of 5 stars Most useful Excel book that I have.......2007-06-12

I work with Excel for more than 10 years, and during this time I have looked at, referenced and bought quite a number of Excel reference books. The book by Walkenbach is by far the most useful that I have. It includes reference to formulae that I did not know existed in Excel, many tips and shortcuts that make the work in finance not only bearable, but actually fun. It is a little bit basic on the financial side (actual implementation and logic of formulas), but the technical explanations are the most comprehensive. I consider myself intermediate/advanced user - and still - thanks to this book - find many new and useful features in Excel.
As for the CD, I have a habit of ordering a new one for each company where I work. The auditing of complex files (to name just one!) becomes so much easier with PowerPac.
                      A couple of notes:
                      - the book is arranged by formulas, not by the subjects. This assumes that you know what you are going to do, but want to find the best way of doing it. Not your "excel for business managers" type of book.
                      - currently I use Excel 2003; most of books advice is still applicable.
                      - certainly, not the book for the novices. The mega-formulas, VBA and arrays chapters are overwhelming

5 out of 5 stars The Best Excel Tool.......2007-02-15

I have worked with and trained Excel (various versions) for over 10 years. I use this book any time I have to write complicated formulas. I recommend it to anyone who is working with Excel, especially formulas. My copy is very dog-eared and I have so many sticky tabs for frequently referenced sections that it looks like a porcupine book.

I will warn you that using this book may cause you to become an Excel-lover if you aren't already!

                      5 out of 5 stars Excellent reference.......2006-04-06

This book is very good for learning your way around Excel and its formulas. I am fairly comfortable in Excel and still found the book extremely useful. There are many formulas that are explained which I did not know existed that have made me much more efficient within the program.

1 out of 5 stars An Exctract From the Author's "Excel Bible".......2006-03-20

The Excel "Formulas" book is extractions from the same author's
"Excel Bible" book. Although it's easier to find information in this version, that convenience is not worth the extra cost for less information. I made the mistake of buying this version, while also having the "Bible", so I basically wasted my money.

2 out of 5 stars extremely poor excuse for an expository book.......2005-12-31

I do all my serious mathematical work with Mathematica. However since some of my collegues use Excel for simple data presentation and analysis, I've recently started using Excel to be able to converse with my collegues.

Since most of the elmentary things that one would do with Excel are fairly simple, the built-in help capability is quite adaquate as a learning resource. However, as with any product, there are various useful tricks that go beyond the scope of the built-in help feature, which a good book could address. Because the reviews on Walkenbach's book were so uniformly good, I thought I would give it a try to get some deeper insights into Excel. Unfortunately I was quite disappointed.

Indeed the book contains a wealth of useful examples, and for that reason I gave it two stars. The major problem with the book however, is that it does a very poor (and often non-existent) job of explaining why the examples work.

A case in point is the example on page 402 which shows how to graph a function without populating values in a worksheet. There is a receipe in the text for accomplishing the task. However the receipe is so sketchy that I don't believe anyone would be able to produce a graph by just reading the text.

Fortunately there is a working example on the CD that comes with the book. And more fortunately, the example can be easily modified to produce graphs of other functions. This is all very good! However Walkenbach does not explain why the example works. Moreover, he makes no attempt to explain the obscure functions (OFFSET, SUBSTITUTE, EVALUATE) which the example is based on. Thus all the reader is left with is a template for accomplishing a task. If he keeps the template around, he should be OK. But if he's asked to develop the template on his own, from basic principles, he will not be able to do so.

The graphing example is not an isolated case in the book. Time and time again I found myself fustrated with poor explainations throughout the book -- few of which provide an understanding of why things work.

Understanding why things work is extremely important because without an understanding of how something works, it is impossible to devise solutions to situations that one has not encountered before. Cookbooks are useful for producing tasty meals, but one cannot become a great cook without understanding the principles of cooking. Similarily, this book is at best a reasonable cookbook, but a terrible expository work.

Definitely worth having on the shelf - nearby, so you can grab it quickly!

                      5 out of 5 stars Excel Annoyances.......2005-05-24

                      Excel Annoyances ...

This book is made for those who have had one or more vexing problems with Excel. If that's you, the answer can probably be found here and lots more besides.

Curtis Frye is an established author, including several books on Excel. He has the book divided into chapters that deal with several categories of problems: Entering Data, Formatting, Formulas, Manipulating Data, Charts, Exchanging Data, Printing, and Customization.

His solutions vary from basic training on how to use a feature, to how to tweak things "just so." Each Annoyance is the result of someone's problem with an aspect of Excel. Since many people do not upgrade to the latest version of Excel when it's available, the book covers solutions from Excel 97 through the current Excel 2003.

One of the most interesting things I learned was the existence of a function that translated numbers into Roman numerals! I never knew this existed. That's not to say I would ever have any use for such a function, but it was interesting playing around with it. If you want to try it out, type a number in one cell and in another, type this formula: = roman(cell), where "cell" is the location of the number you typed. You'll see the result in roman numbers, as advertised. Slick! Someone once threatened to file his income tax return using roman numbers, just to make things hard for IRS, and this is a way it could be done. IRS would probably object.

Screen shots are used liberally in the book. These may simply be a shot of a worksheet but often a related dialog box is also shown. Occasionally a text box includes extra information that may be of importance for a subject.

One extra feature include in the book is reference to some time-wasters, also known as games. Each is an Excel version and is free to download. There's Pac Man, Arkanoid, BlackJack, Rubik's Cube, Tetris and more.

There are occasional answers using Visual Basic, but for the most part, the answers simply use the settings that are already in Excel. Most users never tap the full potential of Excel, and I'm no exception. I feel I am an expert, but I certainly learned a lot by reading this book and you will too, if you use Excel at all.

                      5 out of 5 stars A New Format for Hints & Tips.......2005-03-21

At last, a computer book written, as I now think they all should be, by a professional comedian. This book is not written for the absolute beginner, but by someone who has used Excel enough to have a couple of annoying problems that they would like to have fixed.

The first Annoyance is "Kill Clippy." This was one of the most hated "innovations" in history. Even Microsoft eventually had the sense to turn him off in Excel 2002. But if you're running an older version, or if someone else using you're computer turns him on, here's how to get rid of him permanently. And for a joke he offers you a web site on "clippycide." That's what a computer book should be.

This goes on to nearly every aspect of working with Excel. Chapter 9 starts out:

Excel's basic functions haven't changed in years. Of course, Microsoft has to addd new stuff to give you a reason to upgrade to the latest version. In Excel 2003, that reason was support for XML."

XML is supposed to make it easy to transfer data from one program to another. Of course there are XML annoyances, one is that the XML that Access produces isn't necessarily readable by Excel. Oh Boy!

4 out of 5 stars stomp the Paperclip.......2005-01-28

Ok, Excel is the dominant spreadsheet. No question of that. But it has some surprising "features" which this book calls annoyances. It gives a multitude of them, with fixes for all. (Another O'Reilly series might call these fixes hacks.)

Logically enough, the book starts off with those difficulties that can be met when inputting data. Many of you will applaud that the leading annoyance is the Paperclip, on which much verbal ire has no doubt been expended. So Frye forthrightly shows how to terminate this pesky little bugger.

Later sections talk about formatting, formulae, charting, printing and so on. The chapters essentially follow the main functional structures of Excel. Some features might not be obvious to you; depending on your expertise. But chances are that for the average Excel user, you'll get some good advice from Frye.

5 out of 5 stars Well organized set of useful hints and pointers.......2005-01-15

This is a well organized and written set of useful hints and pointers for Excel. They range from solutions to difficult data analysis issues, to tips about graphing, pivot tables, and importing data from various formats, notably XML.

The book is organized into chapters around central Excel themes; editing, formulas, formatting, charting, etc. Each chapter has a set of annoyances with a description and a solution. These annoyances are sometimes bugs, and sometimes just difficult issues that reasonably advanced users will run into where the help is either insufficient or poorly written. The fixes are generally fairly short and contained within the bounds of Excel, though the book does point to external sites and software where appropriate.

Definitely a must have for the power Excel user.
