Book Description
Consort to Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, Elizabeth was a modern woman who fled the confines of Habsburg to roam free--she fancied dangerous riding, sailing and poetry--but her life ended with her assassination in 1896. "Haslip writes with vividness and immediacy... a serious book which is highly readable." --Edward Crankshaw.
Customer Reviews:
Pleasantly Surprised..........2007-02-16
I was dreading that this book would be like all other's in that it would portray Elizabeth as a poor little spoiled, mis-understood rich girl. It didn't and I found that very refreshing.
My only critism of this book is that there is only one occasion when the author translated the french, german, russian, etc. quotes that were used and I found that mildly annoying as I don't speak or read any of those languages.
Overall a very good book!
Hapsburg or Habsburg?.......2005-07-20
I really enjoyed this book, there was only a minor matter which rather annoyed me. I wonder why nobody seems to have taken the trouble of checking the proper spelling of all those European names?
As a native speaker of both German and Hungarian, I was quite
distracted by reading Gödollo instead of Gödöllõ, to name just one of many blunders.
Crenneville sometimes becomes Grenneville, Marie Vetsera turns into a Mary, Maria Theresia is always Maria Theresa, robbed of an i, the Ballhausplatz is shortened into Ballplatz, and while Hapsburg is not exactly wrong, it was apparently never used officially - and you don't often come across it even in Austria.
Perhaps in future editions someone might provide corrections? I think the book is worth it.
Reads more like a novel than a biography.......2004-03-29
Top of Form
I was somewhat reluctant to first start reading The Lonely Empress because, from the some of the biographies I've read (but certainly not all!), they tend to start out interesting but then become dull and boring. It usually takes a talented author to write a biography on a boring royal. But even an unskilled author would have no trouble about sounding fascinating if their subject matter was Elisabeth of Austria.
Born a mere daughter of a duke in Bavaria, Elisabeth had a fairytale (ish) romance. The emperor of Austria, Francis Joseph, was already engaged to Elisabeth's sister Helen when he fell in love with her. All of a sudden, to everyone's surprise, the Emperor started to rant about the grace and beauty of this younger sister, much to the dismay of his mother, the archduchess Sophie, who thought that Helen would become the perfect empress.
Elisabeth was still a child when she became engaged to the Emperor. Suddenly, she wasn't allowed to run wild, like she had been when she was younger. Elisabeth had been known to skip her lessons and go out riding for hours. She inherited her father's peculiarity and was known to be her happiest when surrounded by less than royal people. Her father, Duke Max, was renowned for his strangeness. He was known to travel the Bavarian countryside to escape his duties and delighted in circuses. The poor Duchess Ludovica, Elisabeth's mother, must have had a terrible time with her daughter and equally childish husband. Because of her strangeness and wild country ways, the Viennese court look down upon Elisabeth.
What makes this book more interesting is how the author has portrayed Elisabeth. She doesn't try to make her into a selfish, spoiled woman yet she doesn't spend the whole book describing her flawless beauty. Elisabeth seems to be a difficult topic to write about. As many people who have met the Empress say about her throughout the book, "She could be quite charming when she wanted to be. Yet she could also become cold and haughty."
Elisabeth has you admiring her at times, like when she tries to help the Hungarian people regain their Constitution, and at other times hating her, the way she treated her husband and children, the woman whose husband spent fortunes building her three homes around Europe and who still wasn't grateful or satisfied. This woman traveled to countries far away so she could escape her duties as an Empress and her husband.
But one feels for Elisabeth at how much misfortune she had dealt with in her life. She seems to be a caged bird, she seems to have those natures that cannot be trapped or caged. She needed wide spaces so she can spread her wings. The author portrayed Elisabeth excellently and made the book an enjoyable read.
Captivating HerStory.......2002-12-04
I first learned about Sissi during my senior year of high school when my German teacher had a connection with someone in the international airline biz and could get her students back issues of German magazines like "Der Spiegel" and "Gala." I grabbed an issue of Gala and there was the most enchanting woman on the cover. It turned out to be Romy Schneider and the magazine was celebrating the 100th anniversary of Sissi's death.
I was utterly FASCINATED, reading about her life, her beauty cult, her self-abusive trials with anorexia and bulimia, her marriage to the emperor, and so forth.
A few years later, I got the chance to study abroad in Austria and hat the opportunity to visit actual historical Sissi-related sites.
When I got back to the US for my senior semester of college, I took a women's studies course and did a paper of the Austro-Germanic Beauty Cult surrounding Empress Elisabeth of Austria. This, along with my personal experiences in Austria and Hamann's book, provided me with a plethora of information about Elisabeth.
But what made me truly appreciate this book was the way that the author presented the material. This book read like a novel. I feel that Haslip provided a very well rounded amount of historical material that doesn't feel one-sided (very pro-Elisabeth or focusing solely on how beautiful she was).
If you're interested in a different "princess story," this empress will captivate you!
Well written biography of Sissi.......2002-08-02
Prior to visiting Vienna last summer, I hadn't known much about Elizabeth of Austria or Sissi as she was often called. Seeing Schonbrunn and the Hofburg made me curious to learn more about her, and this book certainly makes for interesting reading. The author provides details not only about Elizabeth and her family, but also about the politics of the day. Elizabeth comes across as a study in contrasts: on the one hand, she could be very charming and gracious, on the other hand she appears to have been fundamentally self-centered and unsuited for the duties of an Empress. Wrapped up in her own pursuits, obsessed by the thought of gaining weight, growing old and losing her beauty, she was restless, possessive and prone to depression. At the end of the book, I felt much more sympathy for the Emperor Franz Joseph who loved Sissi to her dying day, despite the many separations he endured that were caused by her constant wandering around Europe and despite her unwillingness or inability to perform the duties traditionally expected of an Empress. Overall, this is a well-written biography, and my only caveat would be that Haslip sometimes makes allusions, for example regarding Elizabeth's illness, that are not fully explained which can be frustrating for the reader.
Book Description
A Good Man takes you back to the smoky haze of Madison Square Garden in the 1950s, when college basketball was king. It transports you to a dead-quiet high school gym in Hawaii, where Shaquille O'Neal is quietly listening to a legend. The Pete Newell story, told with great detail and affection by Bruce Jenkins, is a portrayal of a great man who just happens to be a basketball lifer. It is about a coach from a much simpler time, whose wisdom is as contemporary as it is old. Get to know Pete Newell. He truly has had an amazing life.
Customer Reviews:
For any coach.......2002-01-31
As a former Pete Newell, Jr. player, I eagerly anticipated the printing of this book. I had heard plenty about his father that I knew he was not only a "Good Man," but a great man as well. Coach Newell, Jr. was my inspiration to join the coaching ranks, and still is. However, knowing your past helps you know your future. This book sheds light on, who I biasly feel is the greatest college basketball mind. In all the research and studying I've done over the years to prepare myself for coaching, I feel this book has given me so much more than what I have read to date. The book is enlightening, philosophical, saddening and amazingly funny. I recommend this for any college basketball fan or basketball coach. You won't regret it.
Highly recommended for coaches..........2000-12-30
I really liked this book. I have followed some of the stuff that Pete has done with the Big Man's camps over the years, but didn't know much about Pete as a coach and his history of the game. After reading the book, I feel like I am a more knowledgeable student of the game, hoping it will make me a better coach in the long run.
So much history is covered, I liked reading the comments of other players, coaches, Pete's players. I have been a Wooden fan, but this book makes me appreciate so much more about Pete. I also liked reading the stories, the practical jokes, and just the background. Seeing how things were done 40-50 years ago, the players/athletes Pete influenced, his connections with people like Pete Rozelle, Joe Kapp, Bobby Knight, Jerry West, Cap Lavin, etc.
The title of the book is quite appropriate for such a great coach. I think the only thing I was looking for was the relationships he shares with his sons, especially after he retired from coaching.
Good book, a must read for those who love the game!
I Had To Do It!!!!.......2000-09-07
To Anyone Interested in this Book...Let me qualify myself as totally biased; yet truthful in my perception of this man, my Father. Pete Newell is both my Father and my 'celebrity' Uncle. I've been Blessed by being his son and a part of 'my' family of brothers (3), who ALL have influenced my life in incredible ways. My Father has a saying that, in fact he has many, but this one pretty much tells the story. "The fish stinks from the head down." Vice/Versa, in this case. Point being: if it's good, it starts at the top; if it's bad....well you can follow 'it' from here. My Father is just one of the most incredible people I'll ever know and I am reinforced on this by the countless souls who I run into on a daily, weekly and monthly basis...that's why I refer to him as "The celebrity Uncle." He touches people in a way, with his amazing perceptions and thoughts that strike people as.....AMAZING; yet his totally down to earth style..... blows people away. I attribute MOST of this skill that he posesses to my Mom, Florence. Now THAT was an amazing women. I can't EVER imagine having grown up in a BETTER home, than the one I was VERY fortunate to grow up in. 3 incredible brothers, all independent, smart and loving of their little brother (me) and two of the greatest parents a child could EVER have.......read the book, you'll get the program and if you don't.......it's on YOU
Biased yet thoroughly enjoyable.......2000-06-02
First, I must confess I know Pete Newell and family. One normally expects an author to explore the pros and cons of a man. But this book is biased in exploring Pete Newell's life and his coaching. Anyone who explores Pete Newell could only write in this fashion. I have never found anyone who had a problem dealing with Pete and the book in my opinion is accurate and truthful. Thank you Mr. Jenkins for documenting one of the best and most popular basketball minds ever. Pete has a saying in basketball, you are either a giver or taker. Pete in life, has been a big giver. I will always cherish that part of my life which included Pete and Florence Newell. This from someone who is not easily impressed. I played at UCLA for John Wooden.
I can't put it down.......2000-03-29
Pete Newell never coached for basketball's blue bloods, and when that is the case, there is so much that is never known about a coach. He retired so young that there is still relatively little known about him compared to the other coaching legends.
A Good Man finally sheds light on one of the best teachers of the game.
All you need to know about his knowledge of the game is this - he is the guy that Bob Knight goes to for advice.

If you like loaches, this is not the book for you.......1999-12-07
Many things are disapointing about this publication if you are not a catfish enthusiast. The text covering the loaches is not even close to an adequate assessment of this group. It seems as if the author simply needed to fill some space or broaden the material covered in the book. One chapter is devoted to captive breeding of the clown loach (Botia macracanthus), but this too is a let-down. If you are a serious loach fanatic you will probably find a few tidbits of information helpful, but for most others it simply isn't worth purchasing.
Hobbyist Guide to Catfish and more Catfish.......1999-12-07
If you're into loaches, this book lacks in information. Most of the book concentrates on catfish. There is a section recounting an incident of clown loaches bred in captivity, but that's about it. A little disappointing for loach lovers.

Book Description
Don't be fooled by the small size of the H-6/Model 500 helicopter. In the scout role in Vietnam, OH-6As and their aircrew became legends for their high-risk work in the low-level environment. Wayne Mutza presents the small, dynamic helicopter's story in this well-written, superbly detailed, and lavishly illustrated volume. Much of the OH-6A's combat record in Vietnam is told in firsthand accounts. Mutza offers fascinating insight to the helicopter's controversial beginning, its development, and its service with the Army National Guard, the Army's flight demonstration team, worldwide operators, and law enforcement agencies. In addition, the reader is treated to an entire chapter devoted to the Little Birds of Special Operations. Also included are appendices with factual data, and more than sixty emblems. It's all here in this highly readable volume.

LOACH HISTORY.......2006-03-20
Excellent collection of pictures and information related to the development of the Loach. Most complete book I've read so far. Everyone with an OH-6 should have one of these for reference.
OH-6/500 series.......2006-02-23
Very good book from the operational point of view, however I wish it had more information on research programs and certification efforts. This is a somewhat selfish view from myself as I was involved in numerous research, development and certification efforts on this aircraft.
New Loach book.......2005-11-11
This is an excellent book - it covers the Hughes OH-6A and derivative 500 series in detail. It's especially good in describing the convoluted history of the controversial LOH contract, and it also goes into detail about the trouble the NETT had fielding the OH-6A in Vietnam. There's a chapter on aeroscout operations in Vietnam, and the OH-6A's post-war usage by the National Guard is also covered. There's a chapter on black ops/covert usage by Air America, the CIA, Seaspray, and the 160th SOAR. The Silver Eagles demo team also get a chapter, as does usage by various law enforcement agencies. The world-wide use of the 500 family is described, covering civilian, military, and paramilitary use. There are around 250 photos in the book, and there are 15 pages of photos of patches, making for around 300 photos total.
As a contributor to this book I'm somewhat biased, but I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the OH-6A and Hughes 500 family of helicopters, and U.S. Army aviation/air cav operations in Vietnam.

Book Description
Making groundbreaking dramas for the BBC's "Wednesday Play" series in the 1960s, Ken Loach was one of the first to show life as it was really lived. With the film Kes, the director established an international reputation. After falling on hard times in the 1980s, he then made a feature-film revival that was little short of remarkable, with masterpieces such as Land and Freedom, Carla's Song and Sweet Sixteen. Anthony Hayward's book shows how Loach's films have made folk heroes of both actors and their characters—Ricky Tomlinson taking his experiences of the building trade and its scams to Riff-Raff, David Bradley as the schoolboy consigned to a life down the pit in Kes, and Peter Mullan drawing on memories of his father's alcoholism in My Name is Joe. It also reveals the influence on Loach of a father who was fanatical about education, the socialist politics that drive his work, and the long-running collaborations with writers and producers such as Jim Allen, Barry Hines, Tony Garnett, and Rebecca O'Brien.
Book Description
This new biography of Edward VI, the boy king who died at 15 after ruling England for only six years, reveals for the first time his significant personal impact on the history of his country. Jennifer Loach portrays Edward as healthy and vigorous (contrary to previous views), precocious, highly educated, and decisive, and she details the dramatic context in which his reign played out.
Customer Reviews:
An authoratative study.......2002-03-05
This book represents a comprehensive and conclusive study of an important Tudor figure. An academic study of a less well-known English monarch, this book is a fitting epitaph to a leading historian of our time.
Not for the casual reader of popular history.......2000-10-31
Very well-researched, with a wealth of primary source material (perhaps too much!), this book is quite academic and dry. Rather than a traditional biography, the book is more a study of various aspects of the reign of Edward VI (e.g. policies on religion, economics, land use, etc.) first under the leadership of Edward Seymour, Duke of Somerset, and later, John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland. I did not feel that I really learned anything about these three figures as people. "Fans" of Tudor history, having read a biography or two of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, are likely to be disappointed in this book. It is much more geared to the historian with a serious, even professional, interest in the period.

Book Description
For more than 30 years, Ken Loach's films have examined the social, political, economic, and psychological costs of living in Great Britain. These invariably controversial film and television works--Cathy Come Home, Kes, Hidden Agenda, Riff-Raff, and Land and Freedom, among others--represent a continuing commitment to using film for political purposes. In this first English-language book on Loach, McKnight brings together seven original critical essays on major aspects of Loach's work, an interview with the director, as well as comprehensive reference material. The essays examine Loach's ongoing concerns with social and political issues in Britain, questions of censorship, the way in which he develops film narratives around public issues, and the format and stylistic questions raised by his particular approach to filmmaking. An important collection for all students and researchers of contemporary film.
Customer Reviews:
Good book for loach lovers.......2000-12-30
This is a nice book to have if you are interested in loaches. It goes into some pretty nice detail on many species, although it is an older book so beware, the names of some of the fishes have changed since the time of the book's publication. It is written by Braz Walker, an aquarist who has written on many other occasions about aquarium fishes. The section on sharks (a type of carp-like fish; not in any way related to the infamous marine sharks) is very small in comparison. If you like loaches, try purchasing this book used somewhere.

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful collection of heroines for "girls" of any age!.......1999-02-10
I first found Tom Tierney's "Famous African American Paper Dolls" at an Afrocentric bookstore in Philadelphia. I love to buy paper dolls for my seven year old daughter, but this collection I held back for my college students (I teach anthropology). I was thrilled to have a collection of cut-outs of such wonderful and inspiring folks as Toni Morrison, Mary McLeod Bethune, Leontine Price and Zora Neale Hurston.
This morning I brought Tierney's book into my "Women at the Margins" course (translation: an anthropology class about gender, race, class and economic development). I thought sharing this book might be a fun way to celebrate black history month. I barely had the book out of my bag before half the class squealed in delight.
Yes, these are college students! But Tierney's artwork is incredible -- the colors are soft and bright, and the costumes are carefully researched -- and the paper dolls are always drawn with great care and respect. Tierney is a true paper doll artist. He also knows fashion history.
My favorite all-time feature of Tierney's paper doll books is the section on the inside covers describing the various dolls and their outfits. The description includes a short biography of each woman and a brief second paragraph about her clothes (each glossy cardboard page includes one fully-attired paper doll and one "spare" outfit). Every item is discussed as if models were wearing them on runways.
I especially adore the narrative on the soft wool coat and "flower pot hat" Rosa Parks wore when she was arrested. Tierney even describes her purse and comfortable walking shoes. He took the time to find out what Mrs. Parks was wearing that day. Mrs. Parks's other outfit was one that she might have worn to her job working for a member of the U.S. House of Representatives.
My mother -- a librarian in Florida -- has Tierney's "African-American Women Paper Dolls" cut out and on display in her library for black history month, placed strategically in a cabinet amongst books by African-American women authors. My advice: buy one for your daughter, and one for yourself. And if you teach a class focusing at all on gender and ethnicity, you might have to order one for your students!

Customer Reviews:
NOT a practitioners guide.......2007-07-03
I'm feeling very frustrated with this book, and here's why. The text contains sample questions, and directs to a website for the solutions. The website requires registration in order to access the material. After filling out the necessary details, I received an email from the publisher stating that I did not qualify as I am not a lecturer. I pointed out that the text claims to be a practitioners guide, not a lecturers guide. After numerour emails back and forth I've given up - I'll return it instead.
Most curiously I was never offered to purchase the material, so I can't even feel conned - just pissed-off.
Excellent intro for students.......2006-04-29
I regret not requiring this text for my students this semester. While there are a few typo's, that is not the point, as the problems are all easy to work out and solve.
A very, very good book. If you are teaching a senior level course that uses even just a few weeks of real options (like my engineering economy course) use this book! You can cover the whole book in 10 or 12 lectures. The end of chapter problems (while a trifle scant) are well done!
Useful but hard to understand.......2005-10-08
I use this book as a required book in a course on my graduate study. It is hard to understand and writen like a novel. However, it is very up-to-date. Readers should have a bit strong background on options, finance and investment.
Excellent book for the practitioner.......2005-08-21
I would rate this 5 stars from a practitioner's perspective, which is the intended audience. But, in terms of actual coverage of real options, Trigeorgis is better. However, Copeland and Antikarov do a great job with this book in introducing real options. There are sufficient examples and you get a good understanding of the topic off the bat. Copeland is a very good author, and he is one of my favorites. It's a good thing that there is a revised edition already, because the first one just had many typos.
Cecilia Gaye Uruguay.......2004-10-14
Copeland and Antikarov, demonstrate in excellent form that NPV is flawed and tends to undervalue the investment opportunities. NPV is a static calculations that fails in the consideration of the many opportunities that management has over the lifetime of a project. Unfortunately the intent of the authors of offering solutions to the questions posed at the end of each chapter as well as real options models, flaw since www.etexere.com/realoptions doesn't exist.
