Product Description

Meet William Lafayette Holcomb, erstwhile Southern aristocrat, erudite, witty, storyteller without peer, and more often drunk than sober as he strolls the streets of the Garden District with the author, relating one New Orleans melodrama after another. Join the author as she lunches at Café Atchafalaya to interview Miss Iler, its eccentric and outspoken proprietor. From the jewel of Buzz Harper s manse to the end-of-the-road Rendezvous Tavern, this is a tour of New Orleans that is not likely to be in any guidebook., and proof, once again, that reality is frequently stranger and more entertaining than fiction.

5 out of 5 stars A taste of New Orleans before its devastation .......2005-09-06

I really loved this book because the writing put me into a city which I had never stepped foot: New Orleans. (And since Hurricane Katrina has wiped out much of NOLA this book can serve as part of its rich history.) The character development is superb; I really cared about each person, from the primary to secondary characters. The detail Ms. Crain gives to her beloved New Orleans paints an eloquent picture for the reader of the rich tradition of the French Quarter, the architecture and its unique people. Bill Holcomb, the book's main character, brings vitality into what is normally a depressing subject of the human excesses of addiction and its depressing toll on those whose loved ones -- even friends -- are affected. It's my personal opinion that RRR would make a great miniseries on one of the pay channels to fully explore the depths of each character without holding back the true feelings of those around them due of FCC censorship.

Book Description

"Houston, I am come."

These were the words that came via satellite from Shanghai on June 26, 2002, resounding with Wagnerian force. They came from the mouth of an enigmatic, 7-foot-5 Chinese giant named Yao Ming who, moments earlier, had been selected by the Houston Rockets with the very first pick in the 2002 NBA Draft.

Since that day, the biggest sports hero to the most populous nation in the world has attracted a great deal of attention from Western basketball fans, writers and reporters alike. He has been referred to by many as "the Michael Jordan of Chinese basketball," causing one Rockets insider to demur. To the people of China, he remarked, "[h]e's Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and Babe Ruth all rolled into one." Yao's play on the court earned him this renown; yet he is also known as a gentle spirit who liked to ride his bicycle to his games in Shanghai. David Hardisty, Webmaster of the popular Rockets fan site, explains the public's fascination with Yao's off-the-court life and manner this way: "We want to know because we want to be able to say that he's an easy guy to like, but nobody really has any idea what the real Yao Ming is like."

The Tao of Yao provides both the dyed-in-the-wool fan and the merely curious with an unprecedented window into the life and mind of the quiet yet fiercely competitive rookie sensation - through his own words, as expressed in numerous interviews and meetings with the press and his fans. It also provides fascinating insight into how Yao is seen by others, both inside and outside the league.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars It is a book of quotes.......2004-09-28

I'm not sure what books the other reviewers were reading. This is a small book which is a mainly a quotebook. It has a few pages of writing in the beginning that summarize Yao's life in the NBA and some pages of photos in the middle. But the majority is one quote from Yao on each page. That's about it. It would be better to have some context, explanation, or follow up (or a lower book price). It doesn't take much time to read since there is not much writing, so if you want more you will be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring story about a great star.......2003-04-18

The Tao of Yao is an "up close and personal" look at one of the sporting world's greatest heroes. The story of Yao Ming, who came up from the Chinese Basketball Association's Youth League all the way to superstardom with the Houston Rockets, is not only a tale of success against long odds. It is also an account of a remarkable person who has become a role model for over a billion people, and an ambassador of Chinese culture to sports fans around the world. What comes through most clearly in this book is the "who" of Yao. I could hear his sense of humor, like when he said to the press that his five favorite English words were "This is the last question." I learned about his humility, from exchanges like the following with Shaq after a Rockets-Lakers game that Shaq had to sit out with an injury: "You played pretty good, Yao Ming," said Shaq. "That's because you weren't there," said Yao. I also got a glimpse of what it must be like to arrive in a new country, not speaking the language, not knowing the culture, and having to quickly adapt to the pressure to be not just good, but great.

By relying solely on interviews with Yao and those who know him best, Doug Choi tells the story of Yao in a way that is immediate and personal. The book is like a good highlights tape - it vividly tells the story with page after page of memorable moments that reveal much about Yao the person and Yao the player. You hear the NBA trash talk that turns to respect, and even "love". You re-live the anticipation of his epic showdown with Shaq. You learn, in Yao's own words, what it means to him to play in the NBA. You find out little things, like why he doesn't go to Chinese restaurants in Houston. And big things, like how he wants to be remembered as a person and as a player. If you're a fan of NBA basketball and "the moving wall of China", then you'll love this book. But even if you're not, I think you'll find this 21st century "coming to America" story to be engaging and inspiring. And, as a bonus, there is a picture of Yao stuffing Shaq under the glass that is worth the price of the book all by itself.

5 out of 5 stars The Wow of the Tao of Yao (ooh-ooohh!).......2003-04-17

Choi's breakin ankles, and hits the trey, nothin but net. This book has it all: insight, humor, and wisdom. He gets the assist in his ability to organize and distill the essence of Yao Ming in a very readable format. Somebody holla, "Alley-oop!" This is a must-have for all Yao fans and for Asians in general who finally have a true playa representin fo tha Fa'East-side.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Another awesome John Williams score!.......1999-11-02

Mr. Williams has once again composed a rousing score entirely appropriate for the newest Star Wars film. As a pianist and an avid John Williams fan, I looked forward to this book of piano solos with great interest. The score itself has less discernable and memorable themes than in the original trilogy, but it is a masterpiece nonetheless. Anakin's Theme is beautiful, and igeniously utilizes the same chord structure and other elements of Darth Vader's Theme (the Imperial March) in a bit of musical foreshadowing. It makes for a beautiful piano solo as well. Duel of the Fates, while a great piece in its own right, doesn't translate as well (in my opinion) to the piano. With the absence of the driving choir and pounding brass, the theme loses some of its effectiveness. My main gripe is the absence of the Droid Invasion theme, which was one of my favorites on the soundtrack, and which I would have loved to be able to play on the piano (I'm not good enough to learn it by ear). Instead, the publisher includes the goofy and juvenile Augie's Great Municipal Band. I didn't care for the carnival-style celebratory march on the CD, and it sounds even worse on the piano. Also, the Main Title theme omits the first few bars of music heard on the soundtrack. But these gripes aside, this is all-in-all a satisfying compilation. Second or third-year piano students should be able to play most of the pieces.

    5 out of 5 stars Star Wars.......1999-12-06

Like all the other Star Wars books I've read, it is an exelent book, and moe so if you've seen the movie as much as I have. The first time I saw it, I really started to get into Star Wars. Then I read the Queen Amidala Journal, and saw it again. Well, after deciding that the first journal was to good not to read the second one, I read the second one,and saw the movie for a third time. After the movie, my mom and I stoped at K-mart to get my little brother a birthday present, since it was on the way home. I saw the book, took it home, read it in about a day and a half, and saw the movie for the FOURTH time the following Sunday! I believe you see a pattern now? The point I'm trying to get at is for every good Star Wars bok Ive read, the more knowledgeableabout the characters I am. And so far, they have all been good exspecially this one. Now just imagine what happened when I heard of the new Jedi Apprentice series!

      4 out of 5 stars What I expected.......2004-12-06

This is a good sheet music book. The songs that I wanted to be able to play are there, it is easy to follow, and I'm very happy with my purchase. I've only noticed a couple of downsides that keep this from being worth 5 stars. One is that on some of the songs, parts that you may have heard on the soundtrack have not been included in the sheet music. This is a fairly common issue with songs so long, but I mention it because a few of my favorite parts (particularly on Duel of the Fates) were excluded. Secondly, make sure before buying this music that you can handle very large chords. I've found myself needing to modify some chords because they are simply too wide for me. Aside from those two small issues, this is a great book. The music is absolutely beautiful, and my small issues with the book have definitely not kept me from using it constantly.

5 out of 5 stars Least Favorite Movie had some of the Best Saga Music.......2007-03-09

Most people will say that Episode One is their least favorite of all the Star Wars films. But John Williams composure for this one is second only to the Empire Strikes Back for the entire Star Wars trilogy. This extended version is a must have, it contains all the music from the movie. The entire fight scene at the end of the movie is included and its wonderful to listen to. I wish somoone would do the rest of the prequel trilogy like this CD. A must have.

      3 out of 5 stars A low selled soundtrack........2006-07-20

I'm a very fan of Star Wars music, but this time, John Williams dissapointed me. i'ts not the music, but the order in which the tracks were labeled. just as it is in the movie.
most tracks are broken up, The Dwell of the fates is broken a hundred of times. and Anakin's theme is not in a separated track. There's no comparations to the first trilogy soundtracks, they're exaclty as soundtracks gotta be.
i owe the one disc version, though it has only 75 minutes of music, it's much more complete.
that's why this soundtrack was a low selled one.
they gotta do something if they want us to get the next ones. (or if they're planning to release them)

5 out of 5 stars good soundtrack or best one .......2006-01-14

      5 out of 5 stars A Complex Masterpiece .......2005-08-17

Williams is the king of film composers. He has a brilliant thematic mind, and he uses it to stunning effect.

This two-hour score lovers heaven is one of his most brilliant scores ever, "i own about twenty of his." It combines Williams's thematic mind, with his obvious mathematic brilliance for writing.

The result is a leangthy work of art, earth shattering by it's themes, and haunting in it's complexity.

Buy this, and surrender to it's power.

4 out of 5 stars John Williams does it again.......2005-06-14

Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace (1999.) The soundtrack to the film, composed by John Williams.

In 1977, George Lucas took the world by storm with A New Hope, the first film in the Star Wars series. The film became known as a science fiction masterpiece in a relatively short period of time, and his spawned numerous sequels and prequels alike. One of the driving forces behind the films, in addition to excellent acting and (what were then) state-of-the-art special effects, the films featured an excellent musical score, composed by John Williams. When John Williams does the score for a movie, he very rarely fails to please with his compositions. And when George Lucas decided to do a second (prequel) trilogy, he once again enlisted Williams to do the score. Many a year and many films later, does Williams still have what it takes to make awesome film scores? Read on for my review of the soundtrack to Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace.

To put it in the simplest terms possible, if you like Star Wars, it's well worth buying the soundtracks. Admittingly, Episode I as a film disappointed me, but the soundtrack proved one thing beautifully - John Williams had not lost his ability compose excellent film scores. While the score from the prequel trilogy does, like the films themselves, pale in comparsion to the original trilogy, this is still excellent music. Admittingly though, some pieces do stand out more than others - and there aren't as many stand-out tracks on here as there any one of the three classic trilogy. Still, where this soundtrack succeeds, it succeeds beautifully - Duel Of The Fates, for instance, is an orchestral masterpiece only a man like Williams could create. In the end, this soundtrack is excellent. Not John's best work, but still solid.

The soundtrack was originally released in 1999, a few weeks prior to the film. Unfortunately, the version available has several small issues - for one thing, some tracks that should have been divided up into separate tracks weren't. This means that the opening theme fades directly into the first unique piece of music, and the ending celebration music fades directly into the end credit music - this means you CAN NOT skip directly to the end credit music! Likewise, the soundtrack lacks the Twentieth Century Fox Fanfare intro to the film (the classic trilogy soundtracks had it), and some songs are out of order. Another problem is that some tracks are mislabeled. Not a big problem, but still an issue. Also, some of the song titles are spoilers for those that haven't seen the films. Despite these issues, it's still good. If possible, get the two-disc edition - it's MUCH more complete.

If you like the Star Wars series (and honestly, who doesn't?), the soundtracks are well worth adding to your CD collection - that includes the prequel ones. Whenever John Williams does the music for a film, his score NEVER fails to please - and his abilities aren't limited to just the Star Wars series. I also strongly recommend the soundtracks to any other films he has scored. For all you Star Wars fans - the soundtracks are essential purchases.

            Book Description

A college diploma can open many doors, but it's just an expensive piece of paper if you don't have what employers seek. Long-time professor and student adviser Bill Coplin surveyed the nation's top companies and identified the essential skills recent grads need to survive and succeed in the job market. In 10 THINGS EMPLOYERS WANT YOU TO LEARN IN COLLEGE, Coplin teaches you to solve complex problems, influence people, and detect BS—real-world know-how your textbooks don't teach you. Coplin's practical approach will help you develop a personal plan for boosting those marketable skills during your college years so you can impress potential employers, land a higher-paying job, and start on the road to career security and satisfaction as soon as you graduate.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars HEADS- UP; GETTING THE JOB!!!!!!.......2007-01-19

Want your children to succeed in the job market? Want to upgrade your own skills? This book offers much needed data about the value of work ethics, communication both verbal and written, working with others, influencing others, internships, building relationships. It is a job research primer. It also tackles the negatives of "helicopter parents" whose well-meaning attempts are often counterproductive to the individual learning process of the young adult trying to grow up and develop skills needed in the work force. Author Bill Coplin also explores time and money management, the interview process, identifying problems and developing solutions.

            A timely and well-written perspective.

5 out of 5 stars Developing the Complete Package.......2007-01-18

The book points out that college students need to develop real-world know-how in ten crucial skill groups:
            Work Ethic
            Physical Performance
            Speaking
            Writing
            Teamwork
            Influencing People
            Research
            Number Crunching
            Critical Thinking
            Problem Solving
A degree might get your foot in the door, but having these skills will make you a valuable employee. I agree with the author that if a work ethic is missing, then all the other knowledge and skills are wasted.

5 out of 5 stars Apractical guide to being practical with your education.......2004-07-15

The book is a tremendous aid to help a college student, or for that matter any young man our woman get a leg up as they prepare for the real world they face outside of formal education. It addresses things that our formal education system misses. If you plan on working in a career, like most people, then you need this book to help you be prepared to face reallity of the work world. It suggests an investment of thought, time and energy but the payoffs will be worth it. Ask the HR people in your company if it is on target. My children will be reading it as they prepare to move into the "real world". Yours should too!

4 out of 5 stars Good and bad.......2004-06-07

The description of this title does not exactly make clear what the book is about.

Part I - Know How Groups
Details specific skills in 10 groups by saying 1) why they're important 2) how college-level coursework can help you develop them, and 3) how activities, jobs, and internships can help you develop them.

Part II - What you should be doing in college to help yourself get a job/internship
Explains the idea of an apprenticeship, how to make college choices, volunteering, thinking BEYOND college, and more

Part III - Planning your success
More on careers, improving your "know how" skills, and how to use show off your know how skills in your resume and cover letter

Part I I found useful for some skills and a lot of fluff for others.
The explanation of the skill itself is mostly useless and consists principally of 1) a discussion of a rather irrelevant quote put at the top of each section, 2) how you might use it in a business/management type position. Of course that helps you out if you enjoy irrelevant quotations and are heading for a career in management, but be warned - this book was written for liberal arts majors. That is the type of student this author has had the most experience with and portrays most skills that are necessary for a position in sales, management, or some other business-oriented capacity. It's not for engineering majors.

Parts II and III I found very useful and eye-opening was the discussion of internships, jobs, and other activities outside of campus that comes after Coplin's foray into "know how groups." It details how you can use your connections and campus/online resources to find a career-starting experience at a relevant company. It also sheds some light on the internship experience and why it's important to "pay your dues."

If 1) you're majoring in some liberal arts field, or 2) want to learn more about what you SHOULD be doing with your time in college, this book is for you. But don't pick it up if you want to go to med, law, or some other graduate school. There are simply better titles for guiding you to those areas.
