I've been on a roller coaster for years with different diets. This book is an excellent tool to take an inner journey as to who we are, and what we think the world sees us to be. It helps us to focus on the fact we have needs inward as well as outward. There are area to evaluate yourself privately and to help you use what you've learnt about you as tools to make losing weight, and being more happy with yourself. Excellent book! Losing weight is a life style change, not a diet. This book will help you to open your eyes more to your true needs.

3 out of 5 stars Light start to self improvement.......2001-07-07

As far as self improvement books go, I suppose this one is also stating the obvious and what we already know. The writing isn't great, it's not terribly sophisticated, but that allows any level reader to understand its points.

I think her personal stories are a valuable asset and worth looking at. After all, if someone born into a title, and once married to a prince, can struggle with these life issues, certainly an "average" person can too - and overcome them.

2 out of 5 stars dejavu all over again!.......2001-01-14

Great book, but she loses stars for not coming up with anthing NEW or original. The concept is great, just not fair to attempt to portray these ideas as original from Sarah Ferguson! This book reminded me very much of another book, one who's central theme is self-improvement through self-motivation. The Duchess' new book talks of rewarding yourself for reaching small goals along the way. It gives verbatim examples such as a "manicure or massage"! This book talks of "self esteem building" and of "being your best friend". This book reminded me of'Awaken the Diet Within' that has been on the market for 2 years. Well, they say imitation is the highest form of flattery! If you enjoy this book, check out the other, you judge for yourself. Or check out the website for the original, there is a "Self Discovery Exercise", funny, Sarah's book has a "Self Exploration Exercise" section--even asking you to list qualities about yourself...

    Book Description

"I do not merely rise above old wrongs; I deny them their reality. I sever my connections to darker times and circumstances. I take people with a fresh eye and an open heart, as they come to me today. Their old dossiers have expired. Our new story has yet to be written."

With the characteristic candor and down-to-earth charm that have won our admiration and our hearts, Sarah Ferguson The Duchess of York shares the hard-won lessons that have helped her work through challenges and lead a simpler, more fulfilling life. Admired as much for her honest assessment of her foibles as for her grace in the glare of the media's spotlight, The Duchess here reveals her most private self. She shares the truths she has discovered from embracing her flaws, striving to make every life decision with integrity, and witnessing the selfless acts of others around her. She takes on challenges both small and daunting -- from putting strangers at ease in a social setting to coping with the death of her beloved best friend; from appreciating the small wonders of the natural world to protecting private time with her girls while honoring her many work commitments. Each lesson springs from a life rich with disappointments and victories, and each lesson is seasoned with a healthy dose of humility and warm wit.

Although her personal struggles have been played out on the public stage, The Duchess's thoughtful, simple approach applies to the struggles we all face. Like sharing a cup of tea with your closest confidante, What I Know Now offers advice for the everyday as it illuminates the delightful spirit, undeniable resilience, and trademark grace under fire of a woman who considers every challenge an opportunity to learn and grow.

Enjoyable Read ........ Recommended 4 stars

    The Review
The work offered by Sara Ferguson is a series of sketches discussing a wide variety of subjects. `Forgiving the Past,' `Laughing Out Loud' and `Finding Empathy' are but three of the short offerings. One vignette I particularly enjoyed is entitled `Keeping Rituals' in which the writer chats about structure of routine and how important it is for children. Sarah Ferguson tells of her own favorite ritual carried out with her Mother as well as describing rituals she maintains with her own daughters.

Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Simple Lessons, Learned the Hard Way.......2003-07-08

Sarah Ferguson's book What I Know Now,is a wonderful little gem filled with beautiful stories and wisdom. I was pleased to find it on the "new" shelf at the library and after reading the first vignette, Forgiving the Past, I was hooked. Each story reveals a little more about the Duchess of York, what she has learned from her past mistakes and how she has set a course to change her future. It is not self indulgent in any way, but open, honest and humorous. It takes great courage to put your history out there for people to examine. It's refreshing tolearn about someone who makes no excuses for her behaviors, good and bad, but accepts what simply is and tries to do her best daily. It was such a pleasure to read about her daughters and the priority she places on her family. Each story is one that all of us can relate to because as human beings, we encounter the same dilemas, emotions and consequences for our actions. I smiled more than once, teared up more than once and fully enjoyed this little book about life. Sarah has a graceful, elegant way with words that makes this book flow nicely. It is definetly worth your time to read this book. Cheers!

5 out of 5 stars Another Winner from Fergie.......2003-06-22

This was a charmingly written little volume of personal reflections and thoughts on how to live the best life one can live. Fergie, of course, has many examples to back up her short essays, but nowhere does she seem to lay blame for things that have gone wrong and always takes personal responsibility for her past actions.
This book reads like a series of personal letters to a good friend who has no axe to grind. Recommended for those who enjoy books with a positive thinking mentality.

3 out of 5 stars Sararh, Plain and Honest........2003-03-18

A good try at trying to be wise and give wisdomly advise. Think Sarah is finally realizing what it is to be an adult woman in today's world. Nothing she writes here is extraordinarily inspirational. I found it to be pretty much the same realizations I have come to in my life as I near 40 also.

4 out of 5 stars Nice little book.......2002-12-28

It wasn't until I read Sarah's book that I realized what a wise woman she is. Her descriptions and explanations helps us feel as though we are experiencing the events she mentions with her. Sarah is a brave and talented person and this new book helps encourage others to face their own tests. I also highly recommend the book of wisdom titled "Open Your Mind, Open Your Life" by Taro Gold, which is also filled with sage advice for living a happy life.

In this demonstration of Alan Stakie's own financial (and supposedly, literary) aspirations, the secrets revealed are almost all business secrets. Starkie helped oversee the princess's financial planning, rescheduling her debt and entertaining an amazing array of quick opportunities to turn her desperation into ready cash. The contemplated deals range from commemorative plates and watercolor paintings sold through QVC to tawdry pulp serializations and a miniseries for the telly--even a Sarah Ferguson name-brand nursing home chain. More sensibly, Fergie and Starkie have zeroed in on book deals and a spokesperson role for Weight Watchers. The blow-by-blow of the balance sheet and the marketing of a royal are splayed out here for your reading pleasure.

4 out of 5 stars A revealing and interesting insight into the world of Fergie.......2003-11-03

Before I read the book I questioned the authors reasons for writing it - especially as she called him her 'dearest friend', but by the end of the book I understood completely. Her loyalty to the author was negligeable and 'hurtful', especially when he told of the circumstances following his suicide attempt; she said next time he commits suicide (as her clairvoyant told her he would) and when he is dead could he get JFK to tell his son that she was destined to marry him (John Kennedy Junior) - bizarre to say the least! At her worst Fergie was shown to be thoughtless, selfish, deceitful, spineless and spoilt. However, the author also gives a balanced view, as in the case where Fergie held and kissed neglected, orphaned kids when many of the other adults present could not even bring themselves to enter the room because of the stench. As for John Bryan - he needs help for sure - what a shallow character!

      4 out of 5 stars Human Weakness.......2003-04-03

I have just read the book for the second time. Very interesting insight into the psychology of all parties involved, including the author. I feel the author had a love/hate relationship with the Duchess of York. When she was good, she was very good: when she was bad she was very bad. It must have been a nightmare trying to "organise" two shambolic personalities. At the same time, I get the feeling it was very attractive to be "an inside player" rather than an outside observer.Well written.

5 out of 5 stars Great insight...by one who obviously knew her best!!!.......1999-04-15

I cannot say enough about this book of ALLAN STARKIE'S....FERGIE: HER SECRET LIFE!!! It's like he was a mind-reader, or psychic when it came to him (Allan Starkie) getting into the thoughts and feelings of SARAH FERGUSON! Truly amazing insight....he is to be commended....and perhaps the QUEEN will KNIGHT him...NOT!!! (Perhaps in his next life?) Good show my man. I can't wait to see his next book....and who's the SUBJECT MATTER???

5 out of 5 stars Oh, You've Gotta Read This One!.......1999-01-12

At first, I thought this was going to be another one of those books written by someone who saw the Duchess of York from a distance and figured that gave them the right to capitalize on the experience. I was very wrong! This author has a captivatingly twisted tale to tell about his daily dealings with Sarah and her toe-sucking "financial advisor" John Bryan. This stuff is so incredibly bizarre, that it couldn't be fictionalized. It is the story of one man--John Bryan--who was so greedy, sleezy, arrogant, self-absorbed, and insecure--and the married woman he shamelessly pursued, she having her own set of faults, weaknesses and standards, such as indecisiveness, stupidity, selfishness and extreme insecurity--to name only a few. Their relationship was so destructive and emotionally and physically abusive, that they almost destroyed each other, but not until they had basically destroyed themselves, first. The author stuck with both of them as a best friend until he was driven to unsuccessful suicide and prison, before he finally came to his senses. After reading this book, one would think twice about having the Duchess of York on one's list of friends.

3 out of 5 stars It leaves the reader wondering about Fergie's character.......1999-01-02

If all said is true I'll never know but I do wonder about Fergie's conduct toward other human beings and why some of those often mistreated by her -the author in particular- kept returning for more and larger dosis of tantrums. Perhaps they were seeking recognition by everyone as friends of Fergie.

This book shows what the Duchess of York is REALLY like: she's a liar, an adulterer, lazy, full of self-importance, greedy, obsessed with psychic mumbo jumbo, and is just plain bizarre.

Prince Andrew deserves a metal for staying married to this freaky woman.........

4 out of 5 stars Strange but entertaining tale of wealth, position, and loss........1997-01-26

Two unlikelier collaborators you'll never meet -- the red-haired Duchess of York and Madame Vasso, a woman with "blessedhands" from an humble Greek background. Sarah sought tofind her way among the many men who sought to benefit fromher position and the palace schemers who made life difficultfor her. How much of this tale can be believed?? It's hard to tell! Vasso assumes a somewhat petulant, put-upontone at times, and portrays Sarah as a headstrong, willfulyoung woman who could not take "no" for an answer. It'san entertaining read, and will keep you from wasting moneyon fortune-tellers ever again

            Book Description

Sarah, Duchess of Marlborough, was a woman with a "passion for government": a compulsion to wield power not only in her own family but in public affairs as well. The first complete scholarly biography of the Duchess, this book makes full use of recently available manuscript sources to tell
the colorful story of a woman at the center of power, whose life spanned more than eighty years from the Restoration to the fall of Walpole. Harris sets Sarah's life and personal relationships in the context of her time, drawing a vivid portrait of a woman whose character and life are as
fascinating and contentious today as they were to her contemporaries.

This book is a must read for all hockey fans, not just Red Wings or Yzerman fans. It follows one of the NHL's greatest captain throughout his NHL career, from the beginning to his 16 years as a Red Wing to his back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 1997 and 1998. It's not just filled with stories to put a smile on your face, though. There's amazing full-colour photos of Steve at his best and quotes from many NHL players and coaches about Steve. I think the most interesting part of the book is Steve's game-day routine . I've always wondered what a player like Steve does on game-day, now I know! Paul Harris has put together a great book that all hockey fans can enjoy. I recommend it to everyone who likes hockey. From little kids to adults, anyone can enjoy this book.

"Fascinating Walt Disney" makes a good addition to any Disney library. It provides a behind-the-scenes look at the genius who made The Magic, and can be conveniently listened to while you're in your car.

That's not to say that it's perfect. While offering some interesting insights and anectdotes that I hadn't heard before, a number of the stories about Walt have already been covered elsewhere. But a bit of overlap is to be expected, considering how many people have already written about him.

I had trouble following the chronology of the book, as it would occasionally skip forwards and backwards in time for no apparent reason. While not a show-stopper, it was mildly annoying.

The music and sound effects in the background were high-quality and helped to set the mood for the stories. Sometimes the use of music to punctuate the punchline of a story went a bit overboard, but overall it was rather well-done.

I also have a complaint about the track layout of the CDs. The narration on each CD consisted only of a single track. This can make things difficult if you want to stop listening to the CD at some point and then come back later. You have to manually "fast-forward" all the through the track to the point where you left off. And folks with CD players that don't have a fast-forward button (the player in my car doesn't) will have to listen to parts that they've already heard in order to get to the point where they left off. It would've been great if every 10 minutes or so of audio was its own track, but "Fascinating Walt Disney" certainly isn't the only CD to fall into this trap. Patrick Stewart's "A Christmas Carol" does the same thing.

So to sum up... I feel comfortable recommending this CD as an addition to the library of those who are fans of Walt Disney. Long-time students of Walt's life probably won't find any earth-shattering revelations, but "Fascinating Walt Disney" still makes for some good listening while you're driving down the road.

              5 out of 5 stars Superb Presentation!.......2000-05-13

Fascinating Walt Disney is a throughly entertaining and extensively researched presentation. Although there is an incredible amount of information present, the narration is easy to listen to, and flows nicely. I had no idea that Disney wasn't always the huge success it has become today. I respect Walt Disney more and feel, in a small way, that I have met him through listening to Fascinating Walt Disney

5 out of 5 stars The Most Entertaining Story Telling!.......1999-11-18

This Audio book truly inspires people. You get to truly understand the dynamics of Disney's success. A must for the American family.

By the end, you feel as if you met old Walt or perhaps you'll want to meet him.

              Truly enjoyed it!

                Book Description

In the music of Stuart Saunders Smith (b. 1948), jazz, the avant-garde, and sound-text poetry coalesce. Through the years he has concentrated on certain kinds of composition--open form, radio music, trans-media systems, and sound-text poetry. Although Smith considers himself a jazz composer and drummer, his work has been absorbed into a wider range of contemporary musical efforts, both in the United States and Europe. This study of Smith contains six critical analyses, an interview, and bibliographic information containing a list of compositions, a discography, Smith's publications, and research currently available on his music. As Milton Babbitt notes, "All of his music is to be reckoned with..." and, as such, this volume will be of interest to all students and scholars of contemporary composition.

                  Book Description

This volume is presented as a collection of primary research materials for scholars and artists. Each composer presents either a score or some form of documentation of one of his works and, in an accompanying essay, discusses his music in detail, exploring both its aesthetic and structural premises. The purpose of this book is not to present analyses or critical evaluations of this original and diverse body of works but rather, for the first time, to document the major activities of recent composers working in the important hybrid media of sound-text and sound-installation. It is hoped that this book will mark the beginning of a general recognition of the importance of such inter-media works as well as encourage future exploration of the aesthetic and structural innovations continued therein. Composers discussed include John Cage, Robert Ashley, Max Neuhaus, Alvin Lucier and Kenneth Gaburo.

4 out of 5 stars Not too useful, but good as a novelty........2000-02-05

Some of the information is good (like the section on the first Armored Core which details how to find those hidden AC parts, if a bit sketchy), some questionable (use missiles against somebody in the arena and you end up dead), and some of it is dead out wrong (in the arena oppoonents section the writer frequently misnames the weapon, getting confused when it comes to the difference between a Gatling gun, the quadruple-rifle machine gun, and the chain gun).

I'd finished Project Phantasma before I got my hands on the book, so Keith Kolmos' points on that game weren't so much useful as novel to me. He didn't seem to nail the best ways to complete certain missions. For example, if you use the 3000-shot "Finger" machine gun on Phantasma, or one of the dual cannons on the arm, or even the 50- or 70-shot rockets with a heavily armored machine, you wouldn't need any luck at all. Why he doesn't make mention of two of the most powerful weapons ("Finger" machine gun and LS-99 Moonlight, which you get in the "Kill Struggle Leader" mission in the first Armored Core) of the game is baffling.

I enjoy this book, but didn't use it much except when it came to the first Armored Core and finding the hidden AC parts of which I'd only found two until reading the book. Interesting, but not essential.

5 out of 5 stars Not 100% perfect, but very very close........1999-01-26

Even with its small size this book is loaded with content. It is divided into three main sections, which cover the central missions, the arena mode, and the parts shop.

At first glance, the missions section may seem like it skimps on the details in order to give you only the simplest of walkthroughs. But this is deceiving as there really isn't that much more one can say about the missions. Sure, they COULD have given you a strategy for beating each and every enemy you meet, but the fact is you'd spend more effort reading about how to defeat them than it would actually take to do it. As it is, the book gives you the lowdown on what your objectives are and a walkthrough that highlights the important sections without bogging you down with a lot of text. Maps are provided for the stages that require them, and the color photos provide you with visual representations of what is being described. It's also nice to have the mission briefings and E-Mail debriefings written down for easy reference.

The arena mode section is also short and to the point, but still provides you with enough hints to help destroy the tougher A.C.s. The section starts out with a concise list of basic tips for fighting in the arena and continues by listing all 49 of the opponents you will face. Included in every description is a copy of the information provided by the game (for easy reference), a complete listing of all the parts each A.C. is comprised of and a short, one paragraph strategy for defeating them. If defeating a certain enemy nets you a special part, that is listed as well. By having each enemy A.C.'s parts listed, not only can you anticipate how your enemy will behave in a battle, but you can also use them as blueprints for building a similar machine of your own. The author even encourages this by telling you how to build his personal favorite A.C.

Finally, we have the parts shop section. This is probably the most useful section in the book, since the format makes the process of comparing parts much easier than using the game itself. Every part is listed under its respective catagory and is charted so that every detail and statistic is neatly arranged into rows and columns. But what I really like is the fact there aren't any fancy fonts or blazing backgrounds being used. Many other companies like to put graphical flair over user friendliness when making their strategy guides, but this one seems to understand that less is more and image is nothing.

User friendliness seems to be a major theme in this book. Not only is it easy to find the information you need, but there are various bonus sections that push the guide above and beyond what would normally be expected. These include a mission flow chart, a codes section, and last but not least, an entire unauthorized chapter that revisits each and every mission of the original Armored Core.

But as good as this guide is, there are still a few mistakes to be found. The Arms and Arm Weapons in the parts shop section were put under the wrong catagories, certain parts were omitted altogether, the reward for defeating Roach isn't listed, etc.

I would've also liked to have seen the parts from the original Armored Core listed in the shop section, since they can be transferred into the Project Phantasma universe via a memory card. It was frustrating not having a "complete" listing of all the parts I could use to build my machine. The unauthorized section should've also included the locations of ALL the hidden A.C. parts rather than just some of them. However, such omissions are understandable as the focus of the guide was intended to be on AC:PP, and not on its predecessor.

Overall, though, these are minor errors in an otherwise well written and well organized strategy guide. I would recommend this not only to the introductory A.C. player as an informative walkthrough, but also to the veteran as a handy reference guide. Gook work!

4 out of 5 stars A good buy! Money well spent........1998-10-29

At first glance, the book looks kind of thin, but inside is awealth of screen shots and information. The book includes a walk-thruof all 17 missions, a guide to the arena, an almost complete listing of all of the parts found in Project Phantasma, and a bonus mini-guide for the original Armored Core. There are also some cool pictures of some of the ACs from the intro sequences.

The first section contains an overview. One minor note is that the author recommends a controller with a turbo button. I find this to be wholly wrong.

The bottom line is that this strategy guide is well worth the $12.95. I have some minor nit-picks and "wishes", but the material that's in the guide is well done. Play Armored Core: Project Phantasma. Get the Guide. Have fun! END

                  4 out of 5 stars A good book for a good game!!!.......1998-10-20

I'm kind of a Armored Core nut so when this book came out on Amazon.com I had to get it. The book is well writter and concise. I did not have to swim through an ocean of pictures to get the info I needed. I also found the author's AC suggestions well suited to the mission's tasks. (When I buy a $70 game I want to be able to beat it!!) With that in mind I really enjoyed the bonus Armored Core 1 chapter, it's small, But it does the job! As I stated before, I good book for a good game I look forward to reading another book by the author in the future.

                  5 out of 5 stars A must-have guide.......1998-10-16

ASCII made one helluva tough game, but rest assured that this book will get you through it's toughest spots with minimal consequences. Inside is not a mere listing of the missions. Instead, as all books of this type should have, are comprehensive mission STRATEGIES that are clearly written, and which make references to clear, full-color screenshots so you'll know exactly what is being talked about. Steps are provided to learn how to battle defensively and to make use of all your limited resources. Accurate directions lead you to find many a hidden gadget in the missions, and believe me, you'll need 'em! You'll also be able to carefully plan ahead when it comes to customizing your AC with the easy-to-read charts that compare price and functionality, based on your preferences. Basically, if it's in the game, it's in the book--the author really knows what he's talking about (so you don't get the feeling like you do with other books that he wrote his strategies based on magazine screenshots and playing for a few minutes...). As the name suggests, this guide will help an Armored Core player survive. All I would've liked to see done a little differently would've been the last section--the mission walkthrough of the first game. Some of the later missions were left out, and since the second game is really an add-on to the first (and the first one was never covered in detail in any publication) it would have seemed more complete with extra details, or none at all. But the book still gets five stars, as it was primarily written for the sequel. Great job. You won't be disappointed or jipped with this.

                  Book Description

Lower employee turnover, grow and develop careers, and significantly increase your company's bottom line.

Mentoring is sweeping through companies both large and small. Increasingly, companies are running formal mentoring programs as a means to speed employee growth, build corporate cohesiveness, shorten learning tracks, support diversity initiatives, and address succession issues. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of informal mentoring relationships exist as ambitious young managers and would-be entrepreneurs look for ways to achieve their career goals faster.

Regardless of the scenario, mentoring demands a variety of skills, according to award-winning business author Florence Stone. In The Mentoring Advantage, she outlines how executives, managers, and employees can get the very most out the mentoring relationship. She details specific behaviors that mentors require, as well as others they should avoid. In the process, readers will learn how to:

                  * Use corporate mentoring for developmental purposes.

                  * Design mentoring programs for strategic purposes, from succession planning to diversity training to lifelong learning.

                  * Avoid the pitfalls, get through crises and morale issues, clarify misconceptions, and realize the full benefits of a mentorship.

                  * Spot raw talent and mold others toward achieving growth and excellence, so they come away from the experience feeling better about themselves and what they do.

                  * Get out of a nonproductive mentoring relationship.

4 out of 5 stars strategies for large companies to implement .......2006-12-12

This book outlined effective strategies for large companies to implement mentoring as a means to lower employee turnover, allow growth and development within careers, and significantly increase a company's bottom line. Also addressed in the book was the fact that companies both large and small are now realizing the full potential of implementing formal mentoring programs as a means to speed to build corporate cohesiveness, shorten learning tracks and support diversity initiatives. The book makes it clear that mentoring in many forms is a population discussion topic nowadays not only within non-profit community organizations but also within the corporate world. Businesses need to be successful and you are learning that success is not achieved alone. Employees need guidance within the workplace to be successful and mentoring relationships harness the tools needed to ensure employees are successful.

The book identifies a wide variety of tools that executives, managers, and employees can utilize while within a mentoring relationship such as checklists, templates, case studies, and tips. Within the book the author focused on using corporate mentoring for developmental purposes, designing a mentoring program for strategic purposes, from succession planning to diversity training, to lifelong learning. The author also used real life examples of mentoring relationship that were utilized within well-known corporations such as IBM and JP Morgan and Chase.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent mentoring tips for both individuals and orgs.......2005-03-14

My company already has a mentoring program that I take advantage of, along with mentor and mentee training. However, this book still taught me a lot, particulary around how to properly message, how to set expectations, and how to deal with difficult or uncomfortable circumstances.

The book is good as a general introduction for those new to mentoring or mentoring programs, and provides some additional material for those who want to start a managed mentoring program at their institution. I'm not convinced it's comprehensive, but the author does a good job of giving both a high-level overview and tying it to concrete benefits.
