Interesting book for obtaining a background in Saint Margaret's life and times.......2006-02-18
Having read another reviewer's dismissive opinion of this book, I was prepared to be underwhelmed. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised by this book, although my previous understanding was admittedly based on pamphlets and short hagiographic summaries.
I do think it is hilarious that the author proposes that King Malcolm's first wife, Ingibiorg, must have been an undocumented daughter of King Malcolm's dead rival Thorfinn of Orkney (who co-ruled Scotland with MacBeth), rather than exploring the possibility that she was the widow of his rival (and, if so, much older than Malcolm). The author doesn't speculate on what could have provoked Margaret to argue for such a sweeping change to marital customs (banning levirate and other 'inheritance' marriages) - cited as one of the five great works for which she deserved to be sainted. I think waiting two years for an elderly wife to die, or worse, nursing an aged first wife after marrying Malcolm, could have provided such passion. I admit, it could have been the then-almost commonplace practice of murdering relatives to obtain property through marriage to widows, without reference to any interesting factoids about Malcolm's first marriage.
Unless you are thoroughly steeped in cutting edge research into Saint Margaret's life, I think you would find this an interesting and informative book.
Proliferation of the Margaret Myth.......2003-12-05
This book was first published in 1993, in time for the 900th anniversary celebrations of Margaret's death. Herein lies one of the major problems with this book as it accepts the official line of the organisers of the anniversary celebrations and does not seek to question some of the more mythical aspects of Margaret's life.
The book is easy to read but unfortunately trots out the traditional stereotypes about Margaret's life without providing much analysis of the small yet available body of chronicle evidence. Many of the current debates, particularly those dealing with the true extent of her pious works as Queen of Scotland, are largely glossed over and sometimes the author seems to be caught up in the cult of personality that continues to surround Margaret.
Wilson and Selby provide a useful starting point for those who want to know more about this elusive figure, however I would advise caution about accepting some of the myths about Margaret's family origins, birthplace and life which constitutes the proliferation of legends which are now being called into question by some notable academics.

Book Description
Margaret was both a saint and a celebrated queen who, with her husband, led Scotland to great acclaim and power in eleventh-century Europe. Her favorite book was an illuminated manuscript of extracts from the gospels, and her personal copy, currently held in the Bodleian Library, is reproduced here for the pleasure of modern readers.
Margaret’s piety, dignity, and compassion made her a beloved figure long after her death. Her illuminated manuscript reveals the depths of her sanctity, opening with a Latin poem relating the one miracle attributed to her, where she preserved this book from damage. Exquisite illustrations transform the script into an arresting treasure, and Rebecca Rushforth uses incisive and comprehensive commentary to explain the story behind the manuscript and set it within Margaret’s historical context. She explores both the creation of the manuscript and its special meaning for Margaret, along with Margaret’s role as a significant figure in British and world history.
A fascinating piece of historical art, St Margaret’s Gospel-Book will be treasured by historians, religious scholars, and classicists alike.

Biography, Building, Designing and Cruising.......2004-11-21
I have my sailing related book separated by category: 1 Building 2 Designing 3 Cruising & 4 Narrative
This book covers all 4 of these categories but I keep it between Building and Designing because that is where I find it most useful as a reference.
Many (maybe most?) of the chapters are from already published magazine articles, many from the 20's & 30's (think of the good days of the Rudder Magazine) back when yachts were what designers & experienced cruisers/sailors made them to be, whereas today they are largely influenced by advertising and the naive perceptions of the consumer.
I learned much from this book and have referenced pages about rig, choice of wood for construction, hull balance...
One of the chapters is about "Eric," a boat Atkin built and designed which was based on a Colin Archer design. "Eric" later won the first non-stop circumnavigation when Robin Knox-Johnston became famous. The design later evolved into the well known Westsail 32.

aka doctor is alive.......2004-11-20
I have logged 30,000 miles at sea. Capsized lets you live what all of us sailors keep tucked in the back of our minds, survival at sea. I have talked with Jim on occasions, for advice on survival. To hear him tell of the capsized boat, slowly filling with chilling sea water, with four men trapped below. The water stopped at chin level, in the black of night. My God my spine shivered. Jim and Steve, thank you for the interesting, yet educational read. Minnesota welcomes you. AKA DOCTOR.
Culinary skills at sea.......2003-01-09
The previous reviews all rate and describe the story accurately - an excellent tale of survival at sea. To add to this now:
On return, the survivors were doubted because of their apparent good health. Perhaps this is why the book focuses so much on food - they had a good cook with them and learned to dine relatively well. The story is from the cook's viewpoint too. If you have some culinary leanings, you may get more from the book than you expect.
New Zealander's will also identify with aspects of the story - Picton, Cook Strait, Great Barrier etc.
what an ordeal.......2000-07-30
I guarantee you will be fatigued after reading this gripping account of a 119 day drift in the roaring 40's off the coast of New Zealand. Due to some freaky currents, the four men aboard actually ended up making a circle to the north and then back to the west towards New Zealand. While on board, they projected that they'd be heading toward South America and it is scary to note there just ain't anything between the two places. This is a very well done account of the day to day life and how little by little the four men come together at least enough to learn how to subsist off the sea. They were very lucky in that they had lots of food on board to start because it took them a while to learn how to catch fish. You'll never look at fish guts the same way -- they used EVERY part of the fish. The author does a good job showing the shifting friendships and loyalties -- not surprising considering the small space they shared for 4 months. This is more than the typical survival book in that the author follows up with one of the survivor's fight with cancer almost immediately when he returned. Thus, the end of the book is bittersweet with one of the men dying after he made many key personal realizations about himself and his life. An excellent adventure read with some insights into friendship as well.
Outstanding.......2000-06-30
I am extremely impressed with every word and description from Mr. Callahan and enjoyed this book immensly; I cannot rate it high enough. His story and message truly comes alive as I become apart of the despair and continuous struggles these men experience. I am there with them, soaking it all in from hidden eyes. Mr. Callahan's writing is supurb; I cannot put this book down. When I am finished I rush to search for more books he has written as this author has become one of my favorites; I thurst for him as a capsized victom myself with no water. Give me more! Most of all, thank you.
Hope this never happens to you.......2000-06-13
I am sure most people have a nagging thought when they board water craft; that the possibility of sinking could occur. After that thought comes to mind, we attempt to push it to the back, unwilling to contemplate the horrible scenario. Unfortunately, for these 4 men, the possibility becomes reality. Even more frightening, this book is a true story. What occurs is a never ending nightmare and a struggle for survival beyond imagination. Four men board a trimaran for a pleasure cruise, encounter a gale that inverts the craft. They must use all of their physical and mental resources to cope with the challenges before them. At first, they hope for a timely rescue, but as days turn into weeks, they realize that they have been literally given up for dead. The book delves into the men's minds and lives while detailing their heroic attempts to save themselves. They feel all the emotions of desperate souls and face situations that no man should have to consider. This is a gripping account of a terrible accident on the high seas. One will conclude this book with one thought, "hope this never happens to me."

Book Description
MICHAEL CRICHTON'S AIRFRAME MEETS SEBASTIAN JUNGER'S THE PERFECT STORM IN A BRILLIANT, FAST-PACED TECHNO-THRILLER ABOUT A YACHT RACE ACROSS THE PACIFIC THAT DRAWS SAILORS READY TO RUN ANY RISK -- EVEN MURDER -- TO WIN.
From the author of Terminal Event comes Force 12, the story of a world-famous software billionaire, Rex Wyman, who is determined to win the world's longest and most challenging yacht race, from San Francisco to Japan through some of the roughest seas in the world. Typical of Wyman's eccentric style, he sets out to do so onboard the Victory, a $75 million racing yacht designed -- and navigated -- entirely by computer.
What the world does not know is that Wyman desperately needs this victory. Behind a façade of extravagant wealth, his empire is crumbling, his assets dwindling, and only a public relations coup like success for Victory can save his company. Not even his girlfriend, Gwen, a beautiful, gifted computer programmer, realizes the lengths to which Wyman will go to win. But when a series of baffling accidents during the race reveals that the Victory's computer is not infallible, Gwen has to find out whether it's a technical glitch or a determined plot to kill her and her embattled boyfriend.
Combining suspense, adventure, high technology gone awry, and a good old-fashioned sea story at its most exciting, Force 12 is a spine-tingling, sensational read by the writer whom Clive Cussler calls "a master storyteller."
Customer Reviews:
this is the 3rd time i've tried to read and finish this book but.......2006-03-28
failed miserably nontheless by certain unspeakable force 12. all i could say is that thayer might own a boat or a yacht after he became so successful as a good writer. he might have tried to own a boat with all the modern gears he could not own for the moment and he indeed knew that some tycoons really owned such boats and just wish them to have some morphy's law lessons. thayer's 2nd world war stories are all great, his later ones such as 'white star', 'the golden swan' and several others are all good but, unfortunately, this one is not included. stay away from your newly purchased boat, sensei, give us more exciting and logic stories instead, please. :)
The first chapter is great however..........2004-04-14
The first chapter describes a very different story from the one that follows. This is more of a science-fiction (man vs. machine) than a sailing epic. I was dissapointed in the lack of involvement from the Pararescueman that was introduced in the first chapter. This book kept me interested in an I-know-what-happens-next-way but I kept reading because I wanted the story line to evlove...it never did.
Thayer Has Written Better.......2003-03-08
FORCE 12 is a fairly exciting and thrilling story of a billionaire soft-ware magnate who creates a computerized sailboat and enters it in a gruelling and dangerous yacht race from San Francisco to Japan through the Bering Sea. He believes the publicity about the boat's software, which pilots the 155 foot Victory (which has a 30 foot beam and 75 ton keel) and replaces a 20 man crew, will increase revenue and sales in his other companies.
Initially the trip is flawless, but gradually accidents occur on the boat and sabotage is expected. Since there are several video cameras on the boat, every movement is witnessed by millions of viewers from around the world and the persona of a forceful man of wealth and power begins to disintegrate.
Besides a mystery, the highlights of the book are the descriptions of being in a boat at the mercy of the sea. It rivals THE PERFECT STORM for its descriptions of the waves and feelings of helplessness while caught in the power of the open ocean.
FORCE 12 is worth reading if you're a James Thayer fan but he's certainly written better. The plot was a little too unrealistic for me but the sailing scenes made it worth the time, especially if you enjoy seeing powerful men in hopeless situations brought down to earth.
Slightly Soggy.......2003-01-21
Pacific northwest software mogul Rex Wyman (wonder whom he's patterned after?) has created
the ultimate racing yacht. Humans are mearly along for the ride in this craft, which is completely
run by computer, from navigation to the working of the sails. In a bid to save his suddenly
floundering company, Rex organizes the ultimate yacht race across the Bering Sea, with the
hope that his amazing technological wonder will open new markets for his company. As
increasingly dangerous "accidents" begin to happen shortly after the starting line, the race
becomes one to stop Wyman from pulling an Ahab, and getting everyone aboard killed.
A good alternative title for this book could be "Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Sailing Gear."
The author is obviously fascinated by all things seaworthy, with descriptions of various types of
vessels bordering on obsessive. But there is an adventure/mystery described, as well, which he
does fairly well. The characters aren't new, but the action is worthy of a beach read.
I couldn't put it down.......2002-07-09
I took this book to Hawaii, and the last 100 pages kept me out of the water. I couldn't go swimming until I finished.

A Good Book ABout Catering.......2006-11-06
I liked this book because it is written in simple language and goes over the nuts and bolts of the catering business. It talks about pricing, portioning, and etiquettes for servers and bar tenders. I think it gives you enough information to decide whether catering is for you. I liked it.
good things come in small packages.......2005-09-21
This is a small book but packed with fabulous information and tips. Highly recommend this book!
Was this a 6th grader's book report?.......2005-06-21
How disappointing. I was eager to receive this book and as it only took about 45 minutes to read from front to back, I didn't put it down because I kept thinking that there had to be some redeeming value. Some useful tidbit of information that I as a person who has never catered anything could use. There was not one thing in this book that someone with common sense wouldn't think of themselves. There appears to be only one reason this book was written. The author had enjoyed being a caterer and when she left the field to raise her son, she needed money. I'm only sorry that she didn't put more effort and thought into it.
Good information.......2003-04-13
This book is written in easy to understand terms for the catering beginner. The author shares some humorous stories and mistakes with the reader. Includes some great recipes and menu ideas.
