One of the things I love about traveling is getting a good sense of the history of a place I'm visiting. I bought "Flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie" in anticipation of a trip to Scotland, and it was perfect for that purpose. Although it provides an excellent history, it seems designed for the visitor; it's equal parts travel and history.
This book gives a day-by-day description of the Prince's 5 months in hiding from the British before he was able to escape to France. He trekked hundreds of miles on foot, in disguise (once, famously, as a ladies' maid!), sometimes passing within earshot of the soldiers hunting him. The book is liberally illustrated with modern photographs of the particular glens and mountains Charlie passed by, as well as reproductions of painted portraits, etc. of the main participants.
Even better, each part of Charlie's escape is accompanied by a detailed map showing where he was on almost a night-by-night basis. In the appendix there are even driving directions and a list of relevant places for tourists to visit.
If you don't know the story behind Charlie's daring escape, you could not start at a better place.

The authors manage to tell the story of Prince Charles Edward Stuart's flight from the disaster that was the Battle of Culloden in vivid detail without including so much detail as to become tedious. Coupled with the inclusion of wonderful photography and maps, this book leaves the reader with a full grasp of what the pleasant Prince and his various protectors, guides and benefactors went through during his five months as a fugitive in the Scottish countryside.
The authors also gave great detail, without undue romanticism, of young Flora MacDonald's role in the Prince's escape.
People interested in the history of Great Britain in general, and Scottish history in particular will greatly enjoy this book.

It would probably take something the size of the Encyclopedia Britannica to fully explain the persona, the personality, and the phenomenon of NBA bad boy Dennis Rodman, but Dan Bickley, a staff writer for the Chicago Sun-Times, at least gets a fast break on the explanation in No Bull: The Unauthorized Biography of Dennis Rodman. The Rodman that emerges from Bickley's search is intriguing, less a colorful clown of the court than a complex antihero who--from broken-home childhood to Madonna worship to photographer-kicking, wedding-dress-wearing rebounder extraordinaire--has lived his life above the rim and consistently marched to the sound of a drummer so different that no one else could even hear the beat. "I'm not a role model," Rodman readily admits, "I'm a figment of your imagination." In No Bull, that figment is fleshed out with some solid, three-dimensional reportage, interpretation, and analysis.

An excellent source on the "Bad Boy".......1999-09-27
This book was awesome. I have read just about all of the sports books out there and I liked the way this one got right down to the basics of Dennis, his life, his childhood, and how he became what he is today. It laid out for me how all the events in his life lead to his present self. Furthermore, the author doesn't attempt to over-analyze Dennis on his own, but rather gives you all the info to let you form your own opinion. I wish all the sports bio's were written like this!!!

Great Movie Great Script!.......2001-04-04
I am currently doing a course that requires me to read scripts and to make the exercise more enjoyable, have chosen to read scripts of movies I love and by people I admire - namely Mr Cameron Crowe. As well as being the script from the movie there are two added bonuses to this edition - included is Jerry Maguire's Mission Statement (which started the whole ball rolling for the film) and also a commentary by Cameron Crowe at the start of the book giving details of how the idea for the film came about; his research and how long it took to write the script; casting (the insights into the casting are very interesting); and his failed attempts to get Billy Wilder to play Dicky Fox, Jerry Maguire's mentor.
Reading scripts to movies always gives a deeper insight to the characters and the plot of the story and this is no exception. It is also helped by Cameron Crowe's notes at the start and his description of how Tom Cruise approached the part of Jerry Maguire.
If you are a film buff and enjoy this movie you will enjoy the script.

Very enjoyable but a little formulaic.......2003-02-18
This is a very enjoyable little book. I have used some of the examples (involving pattern matching) in teaching students the bones of computer based reasoning. The questions are mostly good to challenging in quality. However as you plough through the tests, a pattern begins to emerge (somewhat like learning to unravel cryptogram based crosswords) and I suspect this helps improve performance.
The one quibble I have is that the wording of questions is not always clear - perhaps one to two in every fifteeen questions. Just to check this for myself I asked my wife, who is the sharpest blade in our household, to look at a few that I found unclear. She agreed (surprisingly ;-). It is worthwhile digging out the GRE general test for comparison on this point, and you'll readily grasp the importance of clarity in question wording. That being said, it is a worthwhile book and I derived a good deal of satisfaction from it.
Excellent fun!.......2000-12-17
I love puzzles, but usually stay away from these "test your IQ" books (most of them are just ego trips for geeks). I picked this book up at the store, flipped through it, and fell in love with it. Yes, there's a scoring system, but the author makes it clear that's not the point. The puzzles are clever and well presented, and the overall format of the book is perfect. An excellent book for people who like keeping their minds sharp.

An Old Favorite Brought Up to Date.......2006-07-10
This book has two real aspects.
First is is a good general introduction to economics that might be used at the upper undergraduate or MBA level. Note the title says that it is 'Managerial Economics.' This book is aimed at the student following a management track rather than a professional economics track. The concept of the book is to give an overview of all aspects of economic theory without a heavy concentration in any one particular area.
Second, this is the fourth edition of the book. This was made necessary because of the great changes that have occurred as a result of Enron, Arthur Anderson and the other companies that collectively made great changes in the business environment. One such change is the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002, discussed at length here even though it is still too new to realize its full implications.
The case studies that are included reflect these new times: Arthur Anderson, Barings Bank, Interwest Healthcare, Property Right Security in Russian Deprivatization, eBay.com, iTunes, Wal-Mart.com and others that could come directly off of today's headlines.
This is a new and up-to-date edition of a well received book.
Very Good Economics Book........2006-06-24
I just finished a Managerial Economics MBA course that used this text. I found it to be very well written compared to textbooks I've read for other classes. I think it does a good job explaining supply and demand, intro to pricing, and intro to strategy and game theory. Examples are used to improve the reader's "economic" intuition. I talked to a friend who just finished a differnt MBA program who used this book. He recommended the book and especially liked the strategy segments and the prisoner's dilema.

It seems like a glorified table of contents. It tries to cover too much and absolutely no detailed in-depth explanations, and absolutely no rigorouse mathematical explinations. It's good only as an table of contents with some details. If you are interested in a specific topic, you are better off finding information on the web or go elsewhere. The cases are fun to read, and provide some insight into the real life problems. Recommend it for night time leisure reading, but not for seriouse students who wants to learn a solid fundation to the subject.
Best Book in my MBA Program.......2005-12-10
This book was the best that I read in my MBA program. It is filled with great examples and is easy to read. At the same time it taught me important economic concepts. I had struggled with these concepts as an undergraduate but thanks to this text I now feel that I have them mastered. Unlike other economic texts this book focuses on real management problems.

I just loved the way each chapter started with a scenario from the history archives of actual firms that narrated a story which was directly linked to the contents of the chapter. Out of all the books that i read for my MBA, this book has been one of the better Management books, which i enjoyed reading.
