Kate Summerscale stumbled onto a treasure trove when she was asked in the 12990s to write the obituary for a British daily for M. B. "Joe" Carstairs, an eccentric Standard Oil heiress who had set speedboating records in the 1920s and who literally ruled her own Bahamian island for several decades, not only paying all the inhabitants directly out of her pocket but also establishing their rules and punishments. Carstairs also was one of the great lesbian lovers of the twentieth century, having affairs with dozens of beautiful actresses including Greta Garbo and Tallulah Bankhead--and to top off everything, was obsessed with a small leather manikin she named "Lord Tod Watley" and took with her everywhere, proclaiming him the great love of her life. The material is so terrific that this slim little biography can't help but be a fun read, but the book is held back tremendously by Summerscale's amateurish writing style, which consists of endless flatly declarative sentences and which rarely uses transitions between new ideas. Clearly Summerscale is quite erudite (her allusions to Woolf and Djuna Barnes are not only illuminating but actually quite clever), but the prose was a real drawback to what would have been otherwise a terrific tale.

On paper, this book sounds fabulous. A rich, beautiful lesbian lives a scandalous life filled with excitement, traveling around the world, meeting lots of famous people, and making love to dozens of willing female partners. Imagine a Howard Stern sex epic with a sumptuous budget and a Merchant Ivoery feel!
Kay Summerscale does a very professional job as a biographer. Unfortunately, the story is not that exciting. Yes, Joe Carstairs was a rich lesbian, and a rebel, but she was not in any sense a "fun" person. She was apparently some kind of borderline schizophrenic. All she could do to act "manly" was to throw screaming tantrums, smoke, spit and swear. Not an attractive personality. The whole thing with carrying the little doll around for 60 years comes across as sick, not funny or charming.
Read the book for the sumptuous settings and try to imagine someone glamorous, like Gloria Holden (from the lesbian classic DRACULA'S DAUGHTER)having the same adventures, but in a fun way.

I saw this slim volume in the store and was fascinated by the picture on the cover - a woman dressed as a man with a little battered doll on her shoulder - "what in the world is this?" So, I started to read. What a surprise. This is the story of Marion "Joe" Carstairs, a Standard Oil heiress, a champion speed boat driver, friend to the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, an unrepentant lesbian, owner of the Caribbean isalnd Whale Cay, and the constant companion of Lord Todd Wadley (yes, a funny little doll). This is one of the most immediately engaging books I've ever read. What a character she was, and what a life she led. "The Queen of Whale Cay" is an absolute charmer from start to finish. Looking for a little slice of forgotten history to while a way some time? This is the book for you.

Nonconformist is an understatement. Eccentric isn't outre enough. Over-the-top words do not adequately describe Marion "Joe" Carstairs. She was a breakneck ambulance driver in World War I France, a world record-holding speedboat racer, the supreme ruler of her own Bahamian island, and pal to notables such as the Duchess of Windsor, Tallulah Bankhead, and Marlene Dietrich.
Assigned to write an obituary of "Joe" Carstairs for the London Daily Telegraph, Kate Summerscale soon became fascinated by the woman who held sway in the 1920's as heiress to the Standard Oil fortune. This singular individual wore men's clothing meticulously tailored for her on Saville Row, favored female lovers, was tenaciously devoted to a small leather doll whom she christened Lord Tod Wadley, and managed to thumb her nose at almost every convention.
As Ms. Summerscale unearthed more and more amazing information about her extraordinary subject, she determined to carry her findings far beyond a terse death notice. The result is The Queen Of Whale Cay, a buoyant, highly readable biography that became a London Times bestseller and nominee for the Whitbread Biography of the Year Prize.
Estranged from her parents and disliked by a step-father, young "Joe" was sent to boarding school in America. Of this time her diary only records, "Left family aged 11." At the age of 16 she drove ambulances in France, where "Paris was heavily shelled....whole sides of houses fell down and people lay bleeding in the streets."
Returning to London after the war, "replenished, brimming with vigour and ambition," "Joe" and some friends opened a chauffeuring service, and took on "any driving work, far and near."
Galvanized by machines and speed, in 1925 Joe used her wealth "to commission the best motorboat money could buy." She was a daredevil on water, competing in races in Britain, Cannes and Detroit, where she vied with the famous Gar Wood.
Yet, racing was not enough. She sought even greater challenges by leaving England in 1934 to rule and reside on Whale Cay, the Bahamian island she purchased for $40,000. Upon arriving she found the only inhabitants were a black couple who tended the lighthouse. "Joe asked them whether they lit the beacon every night, and they replied, to her amusement, "Only when the weather's good."
She worked alongside laborers to lay a road from one end of the island to another. A store was built, and a large hole dug then filled with blocks of ice for refrigeration. Her home, the Great House, was constructed with the help of 300 men. It was a "sturdy Spanish villa, white, with red tiles..." From there she had dominion over a colony of 500 Bahamians, and entertained friends from throughout the world.
During the 1960's, as Bahamians became increasingly independent, the atmosphere on Whale Cay changed, and "Joe" retreated to Miami. In 1975 she sold the island for approximately 1 million dollars. Three years later, deciding she'd had enough of women, she invited a handsome older man to move in with her. Hugh Harrison "stayed with her as a friend and paid companion until she died." In 1993 "Joe" and Wadley were cremated together.
Generous, outrageous, at times a bold prankster, "Joe" Carstairs defies description. Her life defies fiction. The Queen of Whale Cay is intriguing reading, a candid portrait of a nonpareil, an incorrigible, unconquerable 20th century woman.

The author makes the most of a truly eccentric life - American lesbian "Joe" Carstairs - who lived the life of a wealthy English lord and sportsman through the 1920s and 1930s- went everywhere, knew everyone- then gave it up to create her own truly bizarre island kingdom in the Bahamas. "Joe" drove an ambulance in WWI, was in Ireland for the troubles, burned a swathe through dozens of actress lovers across Europe, including some famous names of the day, drank and danced through the London nightclubs, designed built and professionally sailed schooners, yachts, racing boats...and the best part? Her only longterm partner in life, Lord Tod Wadley, was a little man DOLL (yes, a doll) whom she never allowed to leave her side for a moment. Wait til you see Lord Tod's photographs! No one could ever make this stuff up. The author gives enough historic and biographical background about Joe's times and the people in her circle, to make Joe's world almost as interesting a character as Joe herself. Bernard Moitessier's writings are a true work of art. I was so inspired by this book, that I have just had a 28' wooden sloop restored for Circumnaviation. The boat's name:

Bernard Moitessier was more than the "Father of singlehanded sailboat racing", his book is that of a poet in action-all his life. Reading The Long Way first would be well recomended to better understand Bernard's references in this book. The author has put his heart & soul into writing this for us as he did working to elevate social awareness. If you've ever been daunted by Cape Horn, yearned to live on a deserted Atoll, or thought World Powers should make the world a better place, then this is for you! If you want to bring Western ways to the Paradise of Sea and Sand, you'll not likely understand what the title means!! :)))
About Half a Good Book . . ........2000-05-31
This was my first Bernard Moitessier book. I picked it up after reading "Godforsaken Sea" by Derek Lundy. Lundy referred to Moitessier several times through the book as the father of single-hand sailboat racing.
The book was not at all what I expected, about solo long-distance blue water racing, but I enjoyed the first half about Moitessier's childhood in Indochina, how he came to love the sea and set out to follow his dreams. It was an account of the history of Indochina that I found facsinating, told through the eyes of an adolescent that loved that part of the world. Moitessier can be an excellent writer.
Unfortunately, the second half of the book turned into a self-absorbed, preachy lecture about his trying to "find himself." What was forgivable wanderlust and adolescent idealism in a teen and twenty-year-old, turned into a sad tale of a middle-aged guy who could never grow up. He tried to legitimize his behavior as his attempt to save the world from war and poverty (from Tahiti, mind you). On several occasions I felt like saying "Get a life!"
I probably will read Moitessier's classic, "The Long Way." I hope that it is as good as he says it is in "Tamata and the Alliance!"
A Feast at the Great Table.......2000-02-10
The book is for anyone with the insight and vision to look within themselves for the answers to the questions that plague man. Bernard Moitessier once wrote, "to feast at the great table, you must have a great hunger and a willingness to go unfed. Only one in amillion have both." This book illustrates that beautifully. This book isn't about sailing. It is about man's struggle within himself to reach peace and harmony. This book is about the hope and triumph of man's indomitable spirit. It is about man's fortitude to pursue dreams and follow their passions. The ideals contained in this book are like the messages in the bottles that Moitessier alludes to in the book. Some of them will bear fruit immediately, others, only after many years, and yet others will be washed up on desert islands where they will fade and wither dismally with age.

This is the best book I have ever read. I have never sailed a day in my life, and Moitessier captured me with adventure and determination.

I initially picked up this book to do remediation on my first circuit analysis course, and have continued to use it through the second course. I call the Shaum Series my "secret weapon" for doing well in EE classes (and physics too, actually). The few pages of exposition at the beginning of each chapter are clear, concise, and mostly complete (Electric Circuits by Nahvi is more rigorous), and the problems, half with detailed solutions and half with just answers, are on-topic, perfectly-tailored, and numerous.
If you are taking circuit analysis courses, EE or not, you would be a fool to not have this book in your bag.
Excellent supplement on the topic of circuit analysis.......2006-06-02
This is an excellent supplement for electrical technology and electrical engineering students taking a first course on circuit analysis. It is a particularly good companion to Boylestad's "Introductory Circuit Analysis", which is a standard circuit analysis text that has insufficient examples on several subjects. This outline starts with the analysis of DC resistive circuits, goes on to AC circuits, and also covers power circuits, transformers, and op-amps. There is a good chapter on complex numbers and phasors, an understanding of which is essential for the study of circuit analysis. There is no need of differential or integral calculus although the book uses derivatives in the chapters on capicitors, inductors, and transformers as needed for voltage-current relations. Even though there is not one integral shown in the book, the outline is still useful to engineers since circuit analysis courses mainly use only algebra.
This book also presents necessary tools such as PSPICE, the computer circuit analysis and simulation program for PC's. SPICE is the standard for analog circuit simulation across the electronics industry, and knowledge of its syntax is essential. The outline also covers the use of advanced scientific calculators in the context of solving actual problems.
Besides being a good source of examples and solved problems, this outline does a pretty good job of outlining the basic theory of circuit analysis. I highly recommend it.

This book is an excellent starting point for the basics of electrical engineering. 30 years after graduating, I started with this book in preparing for the Professional Engineering exam. Many problems, with solutions, which solidifies the basic theory.

BASIC CIRCUITS ANALYSIS - 2nd Edition - O'Malley
Not a bad book for students confronting analog circuit analysis for the 1st time. The book should also provide a comfortable review for someone who has been away from the subject for awhile
It is obvious that some thought went into this work. The book is without calculus, but the EE student should appreciate the crisp & clean presentation & find it a good companion to a more advanced course. It is often the insight & approach to solving these basic analog circuit analysis problems that are most important at this time & this book should help in that regard. As opposed to many technical books by this publisher, I found few errors; however I have not worked many of the problems - which are numerous. The book follows the Schaum Outline format: bare-bones introduction of a subject with some of the meat contained in the problems. This can result in one needing another sentence or two in the text to fill a hold, as in the chapter on Phasors, for example.
I do think the PSpice circuit analysis is over played a bit. The author does introduce the old MS-DOS text based system (with little explanation) where circuit node files must be written, compiled & run. I suspect that since Windows 95 & the wide distribution of PSpice 8.0 with the schematic capture front end, these more recent & useful features would now be in use in most institutions & work places.
However, the book is well worth the price & covers most of the subjects usually encountered in a 1st semester course of beginning analog circuit analysis plus a good introduction to Op-Amps. I recommend the book.

True Nuts & Bolts for Businesses Interested in Franchising Their Businesses!.......2007-09-22
I found this book very informative and directed towards people who are considering franchising or licensing their businesses (as I am) as opposed to someone looking to buy a franchise. I would have wanted more information on the licensing aspect however. About 90% of the contents are for prospective franchisors and only 10% for somebody looking into the other option which is licensing. That's why I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5. I would have wanted a little more info on licensing as an alternative. But as far as the franchising content it is definitely 5 stars.
Great How-To Book.......2006-06-13
Andrew Sherman is both an experienced franchise attorney and has been involved in franchise management. This is a great, step-by-step "how to" book on everything you need to do to create a successful franchise.
Having been down that road, I can tell you that you are not likely to create a successful franchise without the assistance of a great franchise consultant. This book, however, will help you ask the right questions in order to evaluate a prospective franchise consultant.
The book will also help you determine if your business is potentially franchiseable.
