Everyone knows that Henry VIII had six wives. Few people realize, however, that he had two sisters who became queens of Scotland and France, scandalizing their brother and most of Europe in the process. In The Sisters of Henry VIII: The Tumultuous Lives of Margaret of Scotland and Mary of France, Maria Perry presents a history of the frequently overlooked Queens Margaret and Mary, who, like their marriage-happy brother, helped shape the ascending Tudor dynasty and 16th-century England.
Having thoroughly researched libraries in both England and Scotland, the London-based Perry provides a painstakingly detailed portrait of both women, European court life, and political history. She adeptly weaves intricate genealogies, complex lines of succession, and intercourt marital intrigue into her narrative. The inclusion of such detail, however, tends to overwhelm the main narrative, and, consequently, it progresses slowly and frequently lacks linearity and a disciplined focus.
The Sisters of Henry VIII was written for the reader already familiar with early-modern England. The newcomer to the period may by frustrated by her frequent mention--without further explanation--of individuals, places, and events. Similarly, readers anticipating a more psychological portrayal of Queens Margaret and Mary will be disappointed. The strength of Perry's examination lies in the breadth of detail in which she chronicles the day-to-day events of both women and the early-16th-century court life in which they lived. --Bertina Loeffler Sedlack
Book Description
"A splendid book with two absorbing subjects. . . This is history at its most enjoyable."-Sunday Times (London) Henry VIII's sisters, neglected by generations of historians, affected the lives of their contemporaries much more forcefully than did any of their brother's famous six wives. In The Sisters of Henry VIII, Maria Perry brings history alive by examining the lives of these extraordinary women and their influence on Europe in the Tudor Age. Margaret became queen of Scotland at age thirteen; family members arranged beautiful Mary's betrothal to the aging King of France when she was twelve. But both women chose their second husbands for love: Margaret married and divorced twice after Henry's advancing armies slaughtered her first husband and kidnapped her children; Mary risked execution by proposing to the handsome Duke of Suffolk. Groundbreaking in both depth and scope, Perry's work rescues two remarkable princesses from the shadows of history and offers a fresh interpretation of a royal family and an era sure to fascinate readers of Alison Weir and Antonia Fraser.

Sisters of a King.......2007-03-26
This is my first Maria Perry book. Her research was/is great and very detailed. This is not just another dry history. She brings understanding along with facts to this story.
16th Century British Royal Siblings........2007-01-09
Everyone knows about the six wives of Henry VIII but the two sisters of Henry are relatively unknown to most readers. These women were queens in their own right and the elder sister Margaret was the grandmother of Mary Queen of Scots. This is a side of Henry's family that is not familar to most history readers. The book is well written and does not spend an inordinate amount of time discussing the relationship between Henry and his sisters,Margaret and Mary. The focus of the book is on their lives and the marriages they were arranged for them in Scotland and France.Henry is shown as a brother who is most interested in the influence and power his sisters play in their roles in their adopted lands and in center of royal power. He is never far from advising them on what to do for the benefit of England and as their all powerful brother. It is not brotherly love just brotherly advise that he offers and that he also enforces on them. His knows his sisters are well placed and wants to make sure that his interests and those of England are reflected in his sisters counsel to their spouses who are the kings of Scotland and France.
The book is well written and keeps the stories of the sisters separate and does not try to interweave these lives. I found the story of Margaret more interesting and turbulent as she was Regent of Scotland and had bouts with the Scottish lords which her grandaughter Mary, Queen of Scots which she would encounter later in the century. Also, her influence on history was greater than her sister Mary who lived briefly in France as Queen for less than three months when her aged husband died and she returned to England to live a fairly unevenful life as wife of Charles Brandon.
I recommend the book to those who want to extend their knowledge of this period and also to understand the nature of arranged marriages of royals from different countries as religious changes were occuring.
Simply not the best.......2006-05-18
Regrettably, I have to agree with the other negative reviews here. I had been looking forward to reading this for months, but it was not worth the wait. Arid, lacklustre, lacking in narrative drive, it does not do the subject matter any favours.
There are better biographies out there. For example, you'll get a more sparkling account of Charles Brandon's wooing of Mary Tudor from Carolly Erickson's _Great Harry_. And you'll also get a more gripping account of court life from Alison Weir's _Henry VIII_.
An unfortunate snooze.......2004-12-30
As an avid fan of Henrician history, I was so looking forward to reading this work and finding out more about the Tudor king's royal sisters. However, what I found out was a lot of mind-numbing detail about period finances, wardrobe and travel itineraries and very little about the actual personalities of these women.
The only part of this dense little book that comes alive relates to their famous brother's well known escapades, so therefore offers very little new or enlightening information. I'd recommend it for diehard Tudor-philes, only.
disappointing.......2004-09-29
I was very interested to read this book about the sisters of Henry VIII having become interested in them when reading Jean Plaidy's stories about them. I was very disappointed. The book really is about Henry VIII and a general history of that period. Mostly the author stresses that one does not know the reactions of either Mary or Margaret to certain events. But things are known about them. For instance, Mary's husband Charles, married right after she died. To whom? The book does not mention this. Also, he was not a faithful husband. Why not mention this? Margaret had small pox and was greatly disfigured but where was this fact in the book??

Henry VIII's sisters: Queens of Scotland and France.......2007-06-30
This book is about Henry VIII's sisters: Margaret, who became Queen of Scotland, and Mary who was married to the King of France.
Margaret was married to James IV of Scotland in 1503. James IV was killed at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. He and Margaret had four sons and two daughters, and it is through their descendants that James VI of Scotland became James I of England upon the death of Elizabeth I in 1603. While Margaret had two subsequent marriages, both of her husbands (Archibald Douglas, Earl of Angus and Henry Stewart, Lord Methven) betrayed her.
Mary was married to Louis XII of France in 1514. When he died, in 1515, Mary married the Duke of Suffolk.
Ms Perry's book brings both Margaret and Mary out of the shadows of history. These are interesting women in their own right and it is a pity their stories have tended to become dwarfed by Henry VIII's matters matrimonial.
Recommended to those interested in Tudor history and also in the politics of royal matrimony.

TRUTH EXPOSED.... HOPE FOR THE CHURCH and THE WORLD!.......2004-02-29
The Last Lap is an excellent primer for what God is gearing up for the church in the days to come. A valuable introduction to the true history of the church of Jesus Christ and what this means for the church of the future. Possibly the most fitting definition of the "one new man" I have ever encountered! Exposes cover-ups that have kept believers from becoming all they were meant to be and how this knowledge can literally change the face of christianity forever! Presented in a spirit of openess and love, never condemnation, this should be must reading for all who follow the God of the bible, especially those in a position of leadership.

In The Last Lap, the author of American Zoom chronicles the lives of NASCAR legends who pushed their racing cars--and sometimes their personal lives--to the limit. With danger lurking at each turn, the drivers form a colorful cast in an ever-traveling sideshow that has become the biggest spectator sport in the world. Golenbock interviews past and present racers, crew members, and families in this celebratory paean to the fast lane in American sports.
Book Description
Stock car racing is not only the most popular sport in the country, but it's also among the most dangerous, as well. Traveling at speeds of over 200 miles per hour, drivers risk their lives every time they take the wheel. To be competitive, drivers must feel invincible. The best of them did, and lived life -- on the racetrack -- to the fullest. Their zest for life and for racing is celebrated in this powerful book.
In The Last Lap, updated edition, best-selling author Peter Golenbock talks to racers past and present, crewmembers, and families of the legendary drivers who have passed on give us behind-the-scenes stories of NASCAR's unique heroes. Among those sharing their stories are racing legends David Pearson, Buddy Baker, Tim Flock, Marvin Panch, thefamilies of the late Curtis Turner, the Myers brothers, Tiny Lund, Bobby Isaac, Alan Kulwicki, and Davey and Clifford Allison.
Customer Reviews:
One of the best racing books ever written.......2001-11-25
At first, I was hesitant to pick up this book, as Golenbock is not exactly one of the most popular names in NASCAR writing. His last work on NASCAR - American Zoom - was filled with glaring errors and misinformation about the history of the sport. However, after sitting and reading merely a few pages from The Last Lap (...), I could tell this book was much different. Golenbock tells the history of NASCAR from a driver's standpoint instead of merely describing races and race results. Each era of racing is related to a different driver. He also tells the stories of several lesser known drivers who happened to have lost their lives prematurely. If you are a racing fan, I recommend this book. If you don't like racing, you may get curious after reading about the escapades of Curtis Turner and Joe Weatherly. It is my personal opinion that you do not have to be a fan of NASCAR to enjoy this book.
Interesting insight into NASCAR's history.......2000-04-11
Each chapter is a separate story about one of NASCAR's heroes. The book does a great job of staying accurate, down to the improper grammer of the quoted person doing the story telling! A fun and informative look at how NASCAR built itself up to what it is today.
I have read a lot of books on NASCAR and this is the best!!!.......1999-05-21
Peter Golenbock has captured the true face of NASCAR. He interviewed old time racers and their families to give you a look at what there lives where like. Stories about Curtis Turner, Fireball Roberts, Tim Flock, Maurice Petty and many others capture your attnetion for hours. This book is an absolute must have for any true NASCAR fan.
The best account available of the life and times of drivers........1999-05-05
This book is pure poetry in motion. From the story of Fireball Roberts and his untimely demise to the story of Joe Weatherly. A moving tribute to some of the greatest drivers ever.
The Most truthful book on racing ever published........1999-04-05
Finally a tome that is down to the nitty-gritty of a sport that nowadays is white-washed and sugar coated.I have been involved in auto racing my entire life and can identify with poeple like Ralph Moody and Lou Larosa and can understand there point of view on the state of the sport today.True racers could give two shits about money!

Book Description
This time the mystery for Sheriff Sharyn Howard and her Diamond Springs deputies hits a little bit closer to home. After a speeding boat flies up over the pier and onto the street, the sheriff's department investigates. They become personally involved when the pocketbook of Sharyn's assistant, Trudy Robinson, is found on the boat--along with a lot of blood. Trudy has been missing for days, and things don't look promising.
While combing the crime scene at the boat a dead body washes up beside the pier. Upon discovering that the dead man was the head mechanic for a local racecar driver, Sharyn's investigation turns to the speedway. Could legendary driver Duke Beatty be the one behind it all? Sharyn has her suspicions.
Trudy is found unharmed at the speedway at the same time that Duke is shot and killed, and it appears that she may be the murderer. Trudy's husband, Ed, one of Sharyn's deputies who also happened to be on the scene at the time, tries to protect his wife by claiming that he is guilty of shooting Duke.
Now Sharyn must prove that Ed is innocent while also trying to find the real culprit.

The Last Lap.......2002-01-30
The book I read was The Last Lap by William Campbell Gault. The genre weas fiction. I thought it was a great book. It had lots of action and kept me on the edge of my seat at all times. I can't wait to read more of his books. The book is about a kid that is about twenty-three years old. He starts racing cars at fairgrounds but he gets in a crash on the last lap and is knocked unconscious for twenty-three hours. Later when he wakes up he starts recing nascar (National Association of Stock Car Racing).he and his Uncle Luke love racing cars. His Uncle Luke races the first half of the race and then he races the other half. Icant tell you the end because if i did then you wouldn't want to read it. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes books with cars in it.

Book Description
Horror films provide a guide to many of the sociological fears of the cold war era. In an age when warning audiences of impending death was the order of the day for popular non-fiction, horror films provided an area where this fear could be lived out to its horrible conclusion. Because enemies and potential situations of horror lurked everywhere, within the home, the government, the family, and the very self, horror films could speak adequately to the invasive fears of the cold war era. I Was a Cold War Monster examines cold war anxieties as they were reflected in British and American films from the fifties through the early sixties. This study examines how cold war horror films combined anxiety over social change with the erotic in such films as Psycho, The Tingler, The Horror of Dracula, and House of Wax.

Interesting.......1999-12-12
I thought this was an interesting book. It helps greatly that the author got Paul McCartney's cooperation, and so there are a lot of quotes of Paul's that you won't find anywhere else. I thought I knew everything there was to know about the Beatles, but did not know, until this book, that there was talk of them making Joe Orton's play LOOT into a film. Of course, when the Beatles saw that the characters were gay, they said no. As Paul says, "We didn't have anything against it being a gay film, but we were four very butch guys, and it just didn't make sense. Mick Jagger's a bit more that way, so someone like him would be more suited to it." Incidentally, (as Paul said in his authorized biography MANY YEARS FROM NOW), Paul was one of the backers of LOOT when it was a play. LOOT was a hit in England, but flopped when it played on Broadway....A good book for any Beatles fan.
This book is far below Beatle literature's current standard.......1998-12-01
Sorry, but this book was a disappointment for me. It should have been published in the seventies, not today, when so much information about the Beatles' movies has been made available on various media. Firstly, anyone can buy any of these movies on video. Also, there is a lot more about the making of the Beatles' movies on Mark Lewinson's "The Beatles Chronicle", or even on the special laserdisc (or DVD) editions of "A Hard Day's Night" and "Help", which include theatrical trailers, radio spots, behind the scenes, still pictures of scenes which were not included on the final edit and much more. Diehard fans may think this book is worthwhile for the allegedly "previously unpublished" pictures. If that is the case, fine. But even the pictures disappointed me: considering the shallowness of the text, this could have been compensated by the inclusion of a lot more stills from the movies. This book will surely look nice on your bookshelf, like an oversized movie souvenir, but the information it contains is mostly superficial.
Not Only music Stars but Movie Stars!.......1998-04-17
This book give a great account of everyone of the Beatles in film and the stories of the movies they made and those they almost made. I would recommend this book for any Beatle's fan or anyone who loves a great film
It's the Beatles, pictures and all, it is onlt the best........1997-12-20
This book was fab. It had great pictures, unknown movies, and everything. I mean, did you know the Beatles were going to do a western movie!! It has great unknown facts, and HOTTTTT pictures of the fab four. I TOTALLY recomend it. I love it and ALWAYS read it over and over and over and over and over.....

A great companian book.......2004-05-12
Kraig Blackwelder and his colleagues have put together an indispensible supplement for players wanting to find a home in the world of Dark Ages Inquisitor. Kudos to Blackwelder for bringing in one of the field's heavy hitters, Jonny Shepherd, to offer his own unique perspective and clever writing. The play samples in this book are interesting, and explained well. And the parallels raised between the mythos of the Buffyverse and Dark Ages are compelling; both use the structure and symbols of Christian legend and rituals, but by subverting/reinventing their contexts, they imbue them with a bizarre new relevance.
Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly intriguing.......2004-02-07
I'll admit, I bought this book mostly because it was highly unlikely I'd be able to borrow it from any friends, with the general rarity of its player base. However, I was a bit more pleased than I had thought I would be. The gameplay mechanics make it play almost like a medieval "Hunter: The Reckoning", right down to the monster-hunting theme and virtue-based powers (in fact, many of the Inquisitors' special abilities are even renamed versions of Hunter edges, for better or for worse). They also sport "Holy Arts", spell-like abilities which seem rather ill-defined from each group's other basic supernatural powers (perhaps they were meant to be a bit more cross-sect?). The book is fairly light on mechanics and rules, but heavy on history and backstory, which is a big help for storytelling chronicles that deal with such immense, complex, and weighty issues such as medieval religion, church and state. Another interesting diversion from Hunter's premise is the idea of curses for each sect of Inquisitor, divine punishments that come from pushing their limits or just as a supernatural balance for their powers and a definite source of humbling. These vary from group to group, but all of them are creative and very interesting. The Inquisitors are a distinct step above Hunters in power, in spite of all the parallels between them, but the careful balances of virtue, vice, power, humility, and those troublesome divine curses all keep things in check. The playing field into which the characters are thrust is one I've always considered both dark and beautiful; Namely, the world of ancient religion. Clashes of faith and man against man can potentially become even greater and more important themes than demon-hunting, if you're inclined to that sort of storytelling.
All in all, though the sorts of characters are just a tiny bit limited, this is a surprisingly worthwhile book. You could even work it into some interesting crossover. Try explaining these as the medieval versions of the Hunters, more in-tune with the divine entity that empowers them or just shaped by the consensus of the times. Or for some real sadistic fun, throw some of these bad-boys in amidst a group of Society of Leopold hunters in a modern Vampire: The Masquerade game, and watch your players scramble for cover and try to figure out what the dickens just took apart two of their coterie mates.
The Dark Medieval and the Shadow Inquisition!.......2003-05-28
This resource guide to role-playing a member of the Shadow Inquisition is an excellent read. From beginning to end, it is a wonderfully comprehensive guide to the various types of Inquisitors, from the crusading knights to the sisters with their prophetic visions. The history that is presented and the background of each of the major groups of Inquisitors is presented with plenty of depth. My reasons for reading this book are not for the purposes of either roleplaying or running a campaign, but I can see where the material in this book could possibly provide a wonderul companion piece for the core book Dark Ages Vampire. An entire chapter is given over to understanding the psyche of the Middle Ages and there are sections that portray individual stories told by, or involving signature characters from the Dark Medieval - which will end up appearing in upcoming Dark Ages novels ;)
The artwork is topnotch from outside cover to black n' white full page prints. This book is an excellent example of the entire Dark Ages line of material and in my opinion, FAR outshines the Masquerade - Modern Nights. Of course, I'm biased since I find the Middle Ages to be a much more interesting time.
This book is a jewel to have on any bookshelf and will present hours of interesting reading and provide an invaluable resource for everything from gaming to simply coming up with YOUR OWN Dark Ages novel (who knows?). Bottom line - get_this_book.

As technology and globalization have disrupted traditional operations along the supply chain, the relationship between suppliers, customers, and competitors has changed dramatically. Examining this issue from several strategic perspectives,
Harvard Business Review on Managing the Value Chain outlines key ideas and provides guidance for incorporating shifts in the value chain into your strategic outlook. A Harvard Business Review Paperback.
Customer Reviews:
How to avoid or eliminate a "weak link".......2007-08-22
This is one in a series of several dozen volumes that comprise the Harvard Business Review Paperback Series. Each offers direct, convenient, and inexpensive access to the best thinking ("ideas with impact") about the given subject in articles originally published by the Harvard Business School Review. I strongly recommend all of the volumes in the series. The individual titles are listed at this Web site: www.hbsp.harvard.edu. The authors of various articles are among the world's most highly regarded experts on the given subject. Each volume has been carefully edited. Supplementary commentaries are also provided in most of the volumes, as is an "About the Contributors" section that usually includes suggestions of other sources that some readers may wish to explore.
In this volume, the reader is provided with eight articles whose authors provide a variety of perspectives on managing the value chain. Given when they first appeared in the HBR (1993-1998), some but remarkably little of the material is dated. Here are brief excerpts from the Executive Summaries of two articles:
"As businesses as diverse as auto manufacturing and financial services move toward modular designs, the authors say, competitive dynamics will change enormously. No longer will assemblers control the final product: suppliers of key modules will gain leverage and even take on responsibility for design rules. Companies will compete either by specifying the dominant design rules (as Microsoft does) or by producing excellent modules (as does disk drive maker Quantum does)." Managing in an Age of Modularity," Carliss Y. Baldwin and Kim B. Clark
"In today's fast-changing competitive environment, strategy is no longer a matter of positioning a fixed set of activities along that old industrial model, the value chain. Successful companies increasingly do not just add [begin italics] value [end italics], they [begin italics] reinvent [end italics], it. The key strategic task is to reconfigure roles and relationships among a constellation of actors - su0pplers, partners, customers - in order to mobilize the creation of value by new combinations of players." From Value Chain to Value Constellations: Designing Interactive Strategy, Richard Normann and Rafael Ramirez
I also want to include a brief portion of Joan Magretta's interview of Victor Fung. He later develops many of his thoughts in greater depth in a book, Competing in a Flat World, co-authored with Yoram (Jerry) Wind. Fung is Group Chairman of Li & Fung, Hong Kong's largest export trading company.
Magretta: "Can you give me an example of how you reach into the supply chain to shorten the buying cycle?"
Fung: "We come in and look at the whole supply chain. We know the Limited is going to order 100,000 garments, but we don't know the style or colors yet. The buyer will tell us that five weeks before delivery. The trust between us and our supply network means that we can reserve undyed yarn from the yarn supplier. I can lock up capacity at the mills for the weaving and dying with the promise that they'll get an order of a specified size; five weeks before delivery, we will let them know what colors we want. Then I say the same thing to the factories. `I don't know the product specs yet, but I have organized the colors and the fabric and the trim for you, and they'll be delivered to you on this date and you'll have three weeks to produce so many garments.'...It's all about flexibility, response time, small production runs, small minimum-order quantities, and the ability to shift direction as the trends move."
These brief excerpts are representative of the thrust and flavor of all of the material provided in this volume. Of course, before managing a value chain, it is first necessary to design and then establish one that is most appropriate to the given organization. For cutting-edge thinking on that, I highly recommend Enterprise Architecture as Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution by Jeanne W. Ross, Peter Weill, and David Robertson as well as Dean R. Spitzer's Transforming Performance Measurement: Rethinking the Way We Measure And Drive Organizational Success and Richard Ogle's Smart World: Breakthrough Creativity and the New Science of Ideas.
Typical professor-speak BS.......2003-07-09
I have a degree in Supply Chain Mgmt and I now work as a Supply Chain Consultant for a company in Atlanta. I picked up this book for useful tips and strategy and I was dissapointed with its contents. Its full of professor-speak BS, all the buzzwords and hip MBA slogans, but its short on anything that's practical. I would have enjoyed this book if were still a wet-behind-the-ears undergrad, real world experience makes cute catchprases and lofty anecdotes irrelevant.
Compilation of HBR Articles.......2002-11-20
Excellent stuff... its just that I didn't realize that it was a compliation of HBR articles (which I already owned).

- Chrysler Keiretsu

top notch.......2000-11-11
Once again, HBR has produced an accessible book that highlights the forefront of ideas of the value chain. The best part of books in this series is that you don't have to commit to reading the whole book at one time. You can pick up the book when you have time and read a whole case and feel like you are still able to add to you strategy knowledge.
Harvard Business Review on Managing the Value Chain.......2000-08-04
Excellent cases. If you are an operations professional, you'll study, learn and live by whats discussed here. There are a couple of examples that seem dated here, but that is to get the fundamentals right and I dont complain! I am a believer in HBR and this one again goes on to prove why.
