Silly Bimpson keeps on going........2001-06-23

If you were around racing anytime in the past 30 years, you will enjoy this book. Simpson tells it like it was, and is still. He was there and did it all. If he told all the stories, and mentioned all the names, this book would be four times its size and no one would believe it really happened, but it did, and I was there in the mid years from about 1968 to about 1985. I'm still around with a head full of great memories of a great man who few know as a loving, careing, kind, and very generous friend. Thanks for this Great book Bill, and remember Life ain't no cherry.....Lynch

NOT awful.......2005-03-30

I hate to do this but "a musician" is very incorrect. If you read the first line of the information the publisher says this book is designed for "classroom use". I used this text in college and now use it to teach my Advanced Placement Music Theory Course. Without a teacher (or the teachers edition) the book is essentially a lot of music examples with the first note(s) written in. The point of the book is to develop the ear. It is clearly not a self study book. (Of course, if one bothered to read the information on site one would know that).

This is NOT designed for individual study! Buyer beware! I bought this rather expensive book thinking this would be a great resource for review before I take graduate school placement exams ... wrong!! The accompanying CD has examples played on a synthesizer, and they DO NOT follow the progression of the book as one would seem logical. The CD includes ONE set, or "transcription" for each unit, and does not have ANY of the examples from the book recorded onto it AT ALL. In addition, these transcriptions seems to be mainly of a synthesizer or of a guitar (and synthesizer). This is not really suited for serious college music students, at least (I am guessing) without the teacher edition. Now, after having written my name in the front cover, I suppose I will have to try to track down a teacher ed. IMHO, this was a big waste of money.

This book is extremely up to date with current research. Anyone studying music theory, aural skills pedagogy or music education must read this book. This book also builds on previous studies done by scholars important in the field of music psychology as well. Separating the chapters into easily accesible units such as melodic dictation and harmonic dictation makes references quick and easy!

Good, but ..........2001-06-13

I have mixed feelings about this translation. The Russian original has twice the number of pages. Here, the translator gives references to the missing games and examples, that just coincidentally are to be found in other books by the same publisher. This is infuriating.

The Russian original is a masterpiece. Volume 2 is organised differently from Volume 1 in that the chapters are organised along thematic lines such as dark squares, light squares and so on. While some of the examples are well-known, the unified conceptual understanding the authors impart is invaluable. One's level of understanding rises to a new level. The book is a must buy for aspiring masters.

Teaches you how to take a middle game position and carry it into the endgame. It give you the entire game,and shows you how to go from each phase of the game into the next phase.

Its Pretty Good.......2002-01-29

This book primarily deals with analysis of examples from grandmaster play, only giving theoretical endings when they illustrate some particular point. The author has quite a bit of text, but some of the variations have a bit of a Fritzy feel to them, and the variations seldom contain textual explanations. The emphasis is on rook endings and minor piece endings. I would have liked to see more explanations of pawn endings and more guiding principles to queen endings.

The reason I only gave this book 3 stars is that I do not feel it is extraordinary. It is competent, but not stellar. Perhaps I would have enjoyed this book more if I did not own many books on the endgame already. Silman's Essential chess endings is hard to beat for the basics. Soltis' Grandmaster secrets is the best source of helpful practical advice in the form of general principles (Here's the best one--don't enter into a K+P endgame unless you're absolutely certain you could win it blindfolded!). Hays' Endgame Challenge is a good self-test guide to basic endings. My favortie endgame book has to be Howell's Essential Chess endings complemented by the massive coverage in Batsford Chess endings. This book reminds me of a book called endgame strategy in that it just explains some of the moves behind complex endings. You should look at it yourself to see if it would be what you are interested in, but it just wasn't the best book for me.

Goldratt and Deming, are arguably two of the most influential business thinkers ever. This book melds statistical process control, and the Theory of Constraints, finally bringing these techniques together in one book. You'll gain a basic understanding of both SPC, and an intro to the Theory of Constraints (TOC), and Goldratts' Thinking Processes (TP). In addition to presenting the tools for process control, measurement, and continuous improvement, the book provides brief bios of both Deming and Goldratt, giving the reader insight into the background of both. Very good book, and a great compliment to other TOC material.

You may find it hard to believe, but this book actually teaches manager how to improve their business performance. Don't be afraid to spend your time reading it and enter Deming & Goldratt world, because it works.
