Customer Reviews:
The best.......2001-01-03
This book has detail about Foxx that has never appeared anywhere before except possibly contemporary newspapers. Foxx's minor league career, largely ignored by previous biographers, is treated extensively. A compelling treatment of the life of a Hall of Famer who hasn't received as much publicity as many players of lesser talent.
The best book out there on Double X.......2000-07-09
A very informative book. It covers his childhood until his death. Mostly it covers his major league career of 20 years but covers his childhood in Maryland with lots of good details too. However, after his playing years (20+ years) is covered rarely quickly in about 20 pages. It was well written, but sometimes had too much game by game details and stats. Is this book worth the 40.00 price tag? No, and I'm a huge Foxx fan. Cut the price in half or wait for the softback edition to come out, and save yourself 25.00 bucks. A few pictures in the book that are average-nothing spectacular.
The most definative book on Jimmie Foxx that I know of!!!.......1998-08-24
Mr. Millikin must of spent a great deal of time researching on Mr. Foxx. I know of no other book written on Mr. Foxx to be more accurate and true. If you are interested in Mr. Foxx, this is the only book that I would recommend. Great job, Mr. Millikin and I look forward to your next book.
Most definative book on Foxx on the market...a must read!!!.......1998-08-16
Mr. Millikin has done his homework on Mr. Foxx. This book is well researched and by far the most accurate book ever written on Mr. Foxx. Mr. Millikin goes to the extreme to inform the reader, not only on Foxx's baseball career, but on his entire life. Once you finish the book, you feel like you actually knew Mr. Foxx and appreciate his success on the diamond that much more. Thank you, Mr. Millikin for your hard work...your book is one I am proud to have on my bookself!!!
The best book I've ever read.......1998-07-16
I love this book
It is the greatest book I've ever seen
Book Description
In February 1925, 17-year-old Jimmie Foxx left his home in Sudlersville, Maryland, and joined the Philadelphia Athletics in spring training. Over the next twenty years, Foxx was one of the most consistent stars in the majors. His long home runs were legendaryhis 535 were second only to Babe Ruth's 714 when he retired in 1945. Only six years later, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Foxx tried his hand at a variety of jobs after he left baseball, but seemed always to be drawn back to the game. He coached and managed in the minor leagues and even managed the Fort Wayne Daisies of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1953. This is the story of Foxx's rise to glory, his life in and out of the game, and his love affair with the national pastime.
Customer Reviews:
Enigmatic Slugger...Enigmatic Read.......2001-02-09
Well, I read the book. That is all that I can honestly say. The book just never had imagination or anything that one would expect from a superstar of Foxx's stature and lore. This was like reading a Grade 8 assignment. Structure and content are terribly lacking. A subject loaded with plenty of history and ammunition, yet it looks as though the book was put together piece by piece with not a clue where to begin or end. The only break for the author is that Foxx had a historical abstract that indicated beginning and end to his career. At least the author stayed in that timeframe. Too good a subject for such a poor and lacadasical effort. Two stars is too generous, but the statistics carry the book. Such a shame!
A VERY GOOD READ.......2000-12-31
THIS BOOK IS A WELL WRITTEN STORY ABOUT THE MARK MCGWIRE OF HIS TIME. AN INTERESTING AND SAD STORY ABOUT AN INCREDIBLY STRONG MAN, PHYSICALLY BUT NOT EMOTIONALLY. THE AUTHOR DOES A GOOD JOB DESCRIBING HIS GREAT CAREER AND HIS VERY SAD LIFE OUTSIDE OF BASEBALL. JIMMIE FOXX WAS A VERY MODEST MAN. ALCOHOL TOOK ALOT OF HIS GOODNESS AWAY AND COST HIM JOB AFTER JOB. JIMMIE FOXX IS A HERO TO ME. THE AUTHOR DOES A GREAT JOB OF SHOWING HOW HUMAN THIS MAN WAS. A BOOK THAT MUST BE READ.
Excellent "just the facts" biography one of baseball's best.......1997-03-22
I realy enjoyed this book about baseball's forgotten hero. One of baseball's best hitters, Jimmie Foxx life after baseball was tragic. The author uses extensive research throughout to present the basic facts of the career of Jimmie Foxx--from the young farmboy from Easton, Maryland to his superb career with the Philadelphia Athletics, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, and Philadelphia Phillies. The one weakness in the book, though understandable, was the lack of development of the relationship between Foxx and his Hall of Fame teammates such as Al Simmons, Mickey Cochrane, and Lefty Grove. Writing a book about a man who was forgotten from the world of baseball fifty years after his career ended was no easy feat. It is truly unfortunate that this book wasn't written in the 1960's when Foxx was still alive and most of his peers were still around to lend insight and develop the relationships that he had between teammates and opponent

Book Description
Rivers make beautiful music - from the trickle of snowmelt to the burble of a full-flowing stream. Here the famed children's musical ensemble, the Banana Slug String Band, celebrates rivers as a fascinating, ever-changing source of life and joy. The attached CD includes their vibrant rendition of "River Song."
Book Description
Philip Ennis presents a major social and cultural study of the origins and evolution of "rocknroll." With masterful command of general trends and telling details, he describes the artistic, economic, and political context that nurtured this radically new popular music. This "seventh stream," which drew from existing forms of pop music, began as a youth movement of rebellion and remains a worldwide banner of youth in search of alternatives.
"Rocknroll" emerged, he shows persuasively, from the successive meeting and melding of the other six "streams"--pop, black pop, country pop, jazz, folk, and gospel. He chronicles how these were shaped by struggles over musical property rights, and by the new technologies of radio and phonograph record.
The most decisive clash was between the New York based music publishers and the radio broadcasters. Their decades long contest resulted in many cultural changes. The basic unit shifted from sheet music to the phonograph record. The radio disc jockey in small, independent radio stations became the new focal point for all the popular musics. New venues, audiences, and talent appeared throughout the nation.
The appearance of "rocknroll" marked a significant cultural moment, argues Ennis. This "seventh stream" was part of an explosive efflorescence in all the American arts after World War II. Its early stars--Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis Presley--built a pantheon of performers with deep roots in all the other streams.

The Thinking Fan's Guide to Rock and Roll.......2004-12-11
Since I was old enough to hear, I have been a fan of rock and roll music and have probably read dozens of books on the subject, not to mention the thousands of hours listening to everyone from Bill Haley and his Comets through Nirvana and 21st century groups whose names are as forgettable as their music. As I grew older, I began to wonder if there was a credible record of the evolution of rock and roll that dealt with the topic as a sociological phenomenon rather than as a cheering venue for a particular artist or phase of rock and roll. Quite by accident, I stumbled upon Dr. Ennis'thesis that rock and roll is actually a melding of the six other important streams of American music: pop, black pop, country pop, jazz, folk and gospel--hence the title, "The Seventh Stream". Beginning with the formulation of the AM radio industry following World War I, Dr. Ennis traces the evolution of American music from the 1920's up through the 1980's. His account of the early formation of organizations to protect the intellectual property rights of the composer/musician is particularly informative. Nonetheless, Dr. Ennis does not present just a sterile, historical analysis of facts and statistics. Rather, he skillfully introduces the varying personalities behind the rock and roll industry and the result is a work that satisfies the casual rock and roll fan, as well as the student of 20th century Americana. Whether you are a doctoral student of musicology or simply a teenager starting up your own garage band, you'll find this to be a rewarding history of one of our greatest cultural treasures.

Cmon now! This is a classic!.......2007-02-08
This was actually the VERY FIRST thing I ever saw in relation to breakdancing back in 2000. This ghetto little book which is such a classic led me on the path to being a professional. Eventually I found actual VIDEOS since it's much easier to learn from them than a book and I went from there. The best videos I found are How To Do The Robot - Breakdance Instructional DVD or Top 20 Breakdance Moves. So check em out but get this book too because it's so funny you won't believe it.
Cataclysmic Beefstick.......2003-08-31
My cat's breath smells like cat food. Chocolate microscopes. The leprachaun told me to burn things. If this is not helpful, then go milk a cow. I'm baking a cheescake. M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E. Bye kids. If you like Cathrine Zeta-Jones clap your hands.... Yes that's him officer. Yummy fish taco. The Earth is 96 million miles away from the sun. I think. I'm goin' on a picnic. Grandma, don't eat the T.V. remote! All done. Post-It. Adios mother f*****. I'm just kidding. You don't have to take it so seriously.

"look at that cheeseburger. awesome."
this book is great.
All-time Classic.......2001-01-16
Although the book is farely thin and inconclusive, "Breakdancing: Mr. Fresh and the Supreme Rockers Show You How" is definately a classic breakdancing title. Mr. Fresh and company serves up a platter of BAD (That means GOOD) move descriptions, instructions on how to talk like a breakdancer, dress like a breakdancer, and even what music is the best to breakdance to. Although this book is out of publish and I have spent a very long time trying to contact either Mr. Fresh, King Tut, Supreme Rocker, or any of the Supreme Rockers with no avail, I would have to say this book describes very well the early-'80s Hip-Hop culture.

The Executive Director's Survival Guide: Thriving as a Nonprofit Leader.......2005-09-12
The book is and excellent resource for information on how to lead a non for profit organization; I would highly recommend it.
However, I did order the book from Amazon to be shipped to my home overnight, for which I paid , but only received it three whole days later. This was rather disappointing and very costly!!!
