My daughters are 6 years old and, we just discovered these books. They absolutely love them and, so do I. These are fun and original - they make reading fun for everyone. Thanks to the authors and illustrators. The pictures are adorable, too. It's hard to find books with great stories and pictures but, these have it. Thanks again. We hope to get the entire series.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for toddlers and new readers alike!.......2003-03-09

I was fortunate to happen upon this book--my 21 month old son loves it and asks for it by name every night. It's has the kind of story that keeps kids engaged, and has a fun ending that even parents will enjoy. The rhyming text makes it great fun for kids to complete sentences as we go. Plus, there is the added feature of there being a small duck bystander on nearly every page, which is great fun for children this age to find, over and over...

My mother bought this book over 30 years ago for my children when they were just beginning to lose their baby teeth. It is such a fun book and they both just loved it. I saved it and now my daughter has it for her two children who are enjoying it as they are just now beginning to lose their baby teeth.

This is one of the best books I ever read to my kids. And they usually picked it first for bedtime reading. It is written in rhyme and the illustrations are absolutely wonderful.

      5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!.......2004-12-09

This is a great rhythmical story that supports early readers because of it predictablitly of the story. The antics are fun and exciting. Also, the illustrations are absolutly FABULOUS and is what kept me interested as a child and still today as a new teacher.

5 out of 5 stars all time favorite.......2000-05-03

This book is one of my all time favorites. I started reading to my children when they were babies - it has great rythm. It is delightful for adults, and my children have always been riveted. My one year old twins stop whatever they are doing to listen to the story whenever I start reading it. (I even "read" it to them in the car or bath because it is an easy little poem to memorize!)

      5 out of 5 stars Reading made easy...and FUN!.......2000-03-29

Written in rhyme, this book makes it easy for young readers to experience the thrill of reading all by themselves. Of course, the goose's antics only add to the excitement. This is a great book to motivate your preschooler to want to learn to read.

5 out of 5 stars A Treasure Chest of Information and Ideas!.......2007-02-10

Mother Goose on the Loose is a must-have resource for librarians, early childhood educators and all who work or live with young children. Whether you are new to the field or have years of experience, you will gain practical, research-based information about developing minds and a treasure trove of ways to enrich them.
The program descriptions in the manual are ample and clear. Combine this with the enclosed CD with its songs and instructions and you're ready to go! I have used many of Betsy Diamant-Cohen's ideas and Barbara Cass-Beggs' songs in my Born to Read library programs and they work because they are simply so right for this age. Parents tell me with delight how they hear their 18 month olds reciting rhymes and singing our songs over and over again at home.
I enthusiastically recommend Mother Goose on the Loose and sincerely thank Betsy for this outstanding manual she put together for all our babies and toddlers who are growing and learning so fast and deserve the very best from us.

      5 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This One!.......2006-07-26

This resource is a no-brainer purchase for librarians, teachers, and day care workers. But parents (and grandparents!) should pick up a copy too. This would make a great baby shower gift for new parents. The author writes with the authority and intelligence of someone with a PhD, the experience of someone who has been a practicing librarian for years, and the sensitivity of a mother. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised (after surfing around on the web) to discover that Betsy Diamant-Cohen actually is all those things! No wonder this is such a great resource! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great training resource .......2006-07-18

For those who haven't seen it in action or heard Betsy Diamant-Cohen speak about it, Mother Goose on the Loose is a dynamic
program based on infant brain research. The program is built around nursery rhymes but includes so much more--music, movement, language, social skills, caregiving tips (and yes, picture books). Ideal for practitioners such as librarians or day care providers. Text is clear, concise, easy-to-read. Includes CD!

Oh NO! There is a wild animal loose on the farm! The animals think it might be a coyote but they can't tell because it's covered in leaves! What ever it is they all try and run away from it. In the end the animal catches up with the gang and she's really only a playful rabbit looking for a friend!

The books illustrations were neat. I read this to my 1 ½ year old sister and they kept her attention well.

I would recommend this book to be read aloud to preschoolers and younger. They will enjoy the surprise ending!

The sight of hulking reliever Goose Gossage staring over his Fu Manchu was only a little less menacing than the high cheese he would uncork in the next motion. In 22 major-league seasons, he regularly led fellow closers in intimidation. That's why the caricature of him smiling on the cover of his autobiography is so jolting. But it's a fair reflection of what's inside.

Gossage, it turns out, is a pretty genial fellow, funny and fun-loving, a clubhouse prankster as fast with an anecdote as he was with his heat. But like the extraordinary pitcher he was, he also knows how to change pace, and his out pitch in The Goose Is Loose is his willingness to break the code of the locker room by telling tales and naming names. Some of his stories carry more sting than a fastball to the ribs. If you wonder why there was no love lost between him and Yankee skipper Billy Martin, look no further: "My first one-on-one encounter with [him] at spring training in 1978 set the tone for my disastrous debut as a Bronx Bomber. When Martin gave me an order that I refused to follow, friction surfaced immediately and never went away." The order? To bean Texas Ranger rookie Billy Sample in the opening exhibition game. Martin was adamant. "He was as vindictive as a Mafia don." Gossage was equally adamant in refusing. He wouldn't hurt another ballplayer or fight someone else's battles. Martin would never forget, but Gossage gets the last word in.

Gossage is equally forthcoming in his lack of appreciation for Jose Canseco, Ricky Henderson, Bobby Valentine, and the John Birchers he played with in San Diego. On the other hand, his respect for Chuck Tanner, George Brett, Thurmon Munson, and Sparky Lyle--Gossage took the incumbent Cy Young winner's job--is clear. Still, the fun of The Goose Is Loose is the way Gossage goes in for the kill. If he demurred at plunking them from the mound, he has no such reservations on the page. --Jeff Silverman

          Book Description

Every baseball fan knows Goose Gossage as one of the great relief pitchers of all time. But in his amazingly rich memoir, Gossage reveals that he is also one of the best--and funniest--writers in sports. Wisecracking, warmhearted, endlessly entertaining, Gossage has a million hilarious stories, and in The Goose Is Loose he tells them all with incomparable wit and style.

Goose Gossage's major league career commenced inauspiciously in 1972 when the skinny twenty-year-old kid from Colorado nearly decapitated Chicago Cubs legend Ernie Banks. Twenty-two years later, the Goose--a veteran of nine ball clubs--had become a legend himself: a dominating relief pitcher whose live fastball registered at the upper limit of the radar gun. But Goose also emerged as a genuine character with his trademark Fu Manchu mustache, unflinching stare, and the ecstatic shouts of "GOOOOOOSE!" that greeted him whenever he took the mound.

Now Gossage recounts the highs and lows of those twenty-two incredible years. Here are his encounters with legends like Ernie Banks, Dick Allen, Mickey Mantle, Carl Yazstremski, Nolan Ryan, and Ken Griffey, Jr. Here is the story of how the Goose became a hot property at the age of twenty-six, only to stumble badly when he started playing with the Yankees. But Gossage bounced back and rose to the heights of Yankee stardom during the wild and crazy "Bronx Zoo" years of the late seventies and early eighties.

It's all here. Shower fights with Cliff Johnson; the running feuds with Billy Martin and George Steinbrenner; the big move from the Yankees to the Padres; the notorious "beer in the clubhouse" showdown with Padres owner Joan Kroc; the constant antics with fun-loving teammates like Terry Forster and Thurman Munson. Baseball's lore, gossip, and salty tales come alive with an insider's savvy and a stand-up comic's flawless sense of timing.

What a piece of luck for readers and sports fans alike that baseball's unrivaled relief pitcher should also have perfect aim as a writer.

          Customer Reviews:

          4 out of 5 stars A rich memoir from one of baseball's all-time greats.......2005-05-19

Goose Gossage was one of the most dominating pitchers of his era. In his autobiography he talks about how he rose from a kid who was afraid he was going to decapitate Ernie Banks to the most feared reliever in baseball. Goose touches on his most memorable moments, including his locker room brawl with Cliff Johnson and the "No beer in the clubhouse" fiasco in San Diego which involved a very public run-in with Padres owner Joan Kroc. He lovingly looks at Thurman Munson and his great appreciation for him shines through. He also reveals how Catfish Hunter picked him up after a game in Toronto after Goose had blown another early save opportunity. The only drawback of the book for me is that it seemed Goose was trying too hard to be funny. Other than that minor detail, an enjoyable read. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining read by one of baseball's biggest intimidators!.......2004-10-12

The first thing you think back on when his name comes up is the word respect. All hitters had it. Goose Gossage was feared because you didn't crowd his home plate, then he struck you out, then he picked up the save! He was the pitcher every manager looks for. He'd brush you back, sometimes twice, just like he did with Willie Horton, if that was what it took to get respect.

He recalls memories of former teammates such as altercations with Billy Martin, or the fond memories of the late Thurman Munson. He recalls the hilarious stunts of pitcher, Sparky Lyle, and equal ferocity of Al, "the mad Hungarian" Hrabosky, and how he smoked a double off the crazy Hungarian! A lot of stories about the nights in the bars, yet more and better stories of the glory of the mound. He even describes the memory of the home run he gave up to Kirk Gibson in the 1984 World Series.

All in all, an entertaining read. Who knew? Very good!

5 out of 5 stars The Goose is Loose is great reading!!!!!.......2003-09-10

I loved this book! I was pleasantly surprised by some of the sensitive passages of the book. If you are a big Yankee fan this book is just right for you. A good companion to the Sparky Lyle book "The Bronx Zoo" or Graig Nettles' book "Balls". Goose writes honestly and often hilariously about his baseball experiences. I was especially moved by the passage about Thurmon Munson. If you loved the 1977-1981 Yankees, this book will refresh your memory of what it was like to be a Yankee fan in that era. I definitely reccommend this book to all Yankee fans!

          3 out of 5 stars GOOOOOOSE!.......2000-06-03

Reading Goose Gossage's autobiography brought back happy memories of my teenaged Yankee-worshipping self, who knew that when #54 stepped onto the mound, good things were about to happen. Gossage's tales about his 22 years in baseball are sometimes ribald and often laugh-out-loud funny. However, longtime Yankee fans will be heavily reminded of Gossage's predecessor Sparky Lyle's brilliant and hysterically funny autobiography "The Bronx Zoo"--the writing style is extremely similar. But what the heck--Gossage doesn't have to be John Updike. He just rears back and throws, and the result is a very pleasant read. See you in Cooperstown, Goose!

          4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2000-05-10

In his amazingly rich memoir, Gossage reveals he not only has a name every baseball fan knows, but he is also one of the best, and funniest, writers in sports.

The nursery isn't just for children anymore!

Pity poor Humpty Dumpty. He's had a great fall but..."He's in an HMO. Get some of the King's horses and a few of the King's men." Witty and irreverent, these cartoons from The New Yorker take a hilarious second look at our most beloved childhood stories and rhymes.

More than 80 selections by such legendary artists as George Booth, Leo Cullum, James Stevenson, and Jack Ziegler--including several cartoons never before published--are accompanied by the original nursery rhymes. The introduction by editor Bobbye S. Goldstein provides a brief overview of the history of cartoons and explains their value in encouraging older children to read and comprehend irony, satire, perspective, and--of course--humor. For readers of every age to enjoy.

Compiled and edited by Bobbye S. Goldstein, Mother Goose On The Loose With Cartoons From "The New Yorker" is a humorous and engaging satire of the classic mother goose nursery rhymes. Chuckle-inducing, thought-provoking cartoons and caricatures spoofing the adventures of Little Bo Peep, the Cow that Jumped Over the Moon, and many more as well as amusing variants of the rhymes themselves comprise this highly enjoyable parody. "When Jack climbed up the beanstalk / A mean giant he did meet, / So Jack slid down the beanstalk / And made a fast retreat!"

5 out of 5 stars full of important insights into French attitudes about film.......1999-09-29

"Henri Langlois, First Citizen of Cinema" ( beautifully produced with an excellent translation by Lisa Nesselson) is a fascinating account of Langlois' life and a captivating history of the Cinémathèque Française. More important, it is, in many ways, the story of contemporary French cinema. The book's authors, Glenn Myrent, an American in Paris, and Georges P. Langlois, Henri's brother, give us insight into French attitudes about film and show us to what extent Langlois had an important impact on the new wave directors and the generation of filmmakers that followed. In fact, Langlois almost single handily influenced the way that the French perceive film: cinema as an art form. The 7th art.

On a personal note, this was quite clear to me as a young film student sitting in the first rows of "La Cinémathèque Française" in the mid-sixties. Not only was I surrounded by would be filmmakers but also in the audience one would often see François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Jacques Rivette, Eric Rohmer, Susan Schiffman to name just a few. And there in the front row would be the young Bertrand Tavernier or the teenage Patrice Lecomte or Elio Zarmati. I remember standing in line outside the Cinémathèque and seeing Henri Langlois surrounded by new wave directors and film buffs passionately talking about films and filmmakers. It reminded me how, a few years earlier as university undergraduate, I would talk with fellow students about poets and poetry or writers and books with the same passion, the same enthusiasm. At the cinémathèque, I would watch, between 3pm and midnight, anything and everything: Chinese films with Czech subtitles, silent documentaries, Chaplin and Keaton comedies, whatever. I suppose we were the last generation of filmmakers who could be truly called "les enfants de la cinémathèque" - children of the cinémathèque. Glenn Myrent, in this excellent American edition, has managed to capture the magical atmosphere of La Cinémathèque that I knew. Not an easy task.

I, like many European filmmakers of my generation, am indebted to Henri Langlois. He communicated to me his passion for the cinéma and his cinémathèque was the single most important thing that helped me decided to become a filmmaker.

In my first feature, LA NUIT DE SAINT GERMAIN DES PRES, I have a small scene in which one of the protagonists organizes a screening at his home of an old 1932 cult movie, Ernest Beaumont Schoedsack and Irving Pichel's "THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME", starring Joel McCrea and Fay Wray, for left bank film buffs. In a way, this little scene was my way of saying "merci" to Henri Langlois and a kind of secret tribute to La Cinémathèque Française. And now 25 years later, "merci" Glenn Myrent and Georges Langlois for such an informative and entertaining book. Vive la Cinémathèque!

This is a succinct and accurate guidebook on the basic differences between cultures. The author has personal experience of many different cultures and offers a practical framework from which the reader can evaluate experiences in differing cultures. My husband and I use it much in our international work/travel situations, give it away often, and lend our own copy out frequently to those traveling in or moving to new cultures. Great resource.

4 out of 5 stars Great book! .......2007-07-13

I found this book comprehensive. It improves your writing step by step. R.Craig practises what is preached in the book. The way the book is organised and styled is exactly what the essence of the book is. So there are 296 pages of examples for anyone who is keen and serious about following.

The tone and pace is moderate, and R.Craig does not oversimplify that explicit business writing is something where you could just read a few pages of examples. R.Craig stresses the need to be perseverance.

There is a small section on the use of grammar and punctuation. As the book is focused on explicit business writing, R.Craig has just done that, being focus on the key term "explicit business writing".

3 out of 5 stars Good, not great, Business Writing Guide.......2007-03-21

Explicit Business Writing - Best Practices for the Twenty-First Century by R. Craig Hogan, Ph.D is a very good, but not great writing guide. The book does contain very specific and useful information to anybody in business who ever has to write a report, memo, or e-mail. I've already used some of their recommendations to make my writing on the job more clear and avoid any ambiguities.

Ultimately, the book is almost too focused for its own good - long on specific examples on how to make your writing 100 percent clear, but short on style advice. This book honors the writing guide genre while not transcending it. Overall, it is worth the purchase price, but should be used in conjunction with additional business writing books, such as "Plain English at Work".

                            2 out of 5 stars I am sorry it has 5 stars.......2007-02-24
