4 out of 5 stars an invaluable volume.......2000-04-17

This is a well arranged volume of the essays essential to Marxist criticism from the 1930's to the 1950's. The essayists are all critical contributions are summed-up, and their current relevance traced, in a brilliant conclusion by Frederic Jameson, perhaps the most important Marxist critic writing today. I like this volume because the choice of essays is great and the selections are placed in a chronological, point-counterpoint format so that the 'conversation' is easy to follow. The essays are mainly concerned with the realism/modernism dialectic. Lukacs lauds the realism of Balzac and Mann as the exemplary approach to historicism in the novel. Adorno posits that high modernism, though it seems apolitical, provides the most ominous image of capitalism, and that it is thus the more viable revolutionary aesthetic. The other essayists chart the space between these (seemingly) polarized perspectives and provide important insights into the more mystical (Benjamin) and pragmatic (Brecht) applications of Marxist theory. Adorno takes Benjamin to task for not thinking dialectically. And, between Brecht and Adorno, Lukacs takes a beating for his reactionary attachment to the bourgeois realist novel. But Benjamin and Lukacs are both vindicated in Jameson's balanced conclusion. This is a short but invaluable volume for anyone interested in Marxist aesthetic theory.

      Book Description

The aesthetic essays of the philosopher Ernst Bloch (1885-1977) belong to the rich tradition of cultural criticism represented by Georg Lukács, Theodor Adorno, and Walter Benjamin. Bloch was a significant creative source for these thinkers, and his impact is nowhere more evident than in writings on art. Bloch was fascinated with art as a reflection of both social realities and human dreams. Whether he is discussing architecture or detective novels, the theme that drives his work is always the same - the striving for "something better," for a "homeland" that is more socially aware, more humane, more just.

The book opens with an illuminating discussion between Bloch and Adorno on the meaning of utopia; then follow 12 essays written between 1930 and 1973 on topics as diverse as aesthetic theory, genres such as music, painting, theater, film, opera, poetry, and the novel, and perhaps most important, popular culture in the form of fairy tales, detective stories, and dime novels.

The MIT Press has previously published Ernst Bloch's Natural Law and Human Dignity and his magnum opus, The Principle of Hope. The Utopian Function of Art and Literature is included in the series Studies in Contemporary German Social Thought, edited by Thomas McCarthy.

        Book Description

The Principle of Hope is one of the great works of the human spirit. It is a critical history of the utopian vision and a profound exploration of the possible reality of utopia. Even as the world has rejected the doctrine on which Bloch sought to base his utopia, his work still challenges us to think more insightfully about our own visions of a better world.

The Principle of Hope is published in three volumes: Volume 1 lays the foundations of the philosophy of process and introduces the idea of the Not-Yet-Conscious - the anticipatory element that Bloch sees as central to human thought. It also contains a remarkable account of the aesthetic interpretations of utopian "wishful images" in fairy tales, popular fiction, travel, theater, dance, and the cinema.

Volume 2 presents "the outlines of a better world." It examines the utopian systems that progressive thinkers have developed in the fields of medicine, painting, opera, poetry, and ultimately, philosophy. It is nothing less than an encyclopedic account of utopian thought from the Greeks to the present.

Volume 3 offers a prescription for ways in which humans can reach their proper "homeland," where social justice is coupled with an openness to change and to the future.

5 out of 5 stars Passionate thinker for hope and solidarity with the spirit.......1999-12-29

It's incredible no one takened the time to review this magnum opus of one of the most important committed thinkers of our time. Bloch's life itself well traversed almost a century, seeing himself and participating in the early innovative artistic movements,Expressionism, the plays of Brecht,Schoenberg's 12 Tone Dodecaphonic means. He also carried diatribes with the likes of Gyorgy Lukacs, as well as writers he admired Anna Siegel. Utopia is a realm that never seems to go away. For Bloch it was a way of gaining distance with the world,in fashioning a path toward it yourself. He said someplace that we all inhabit our own durational frames, and that we develop, or come to see our horizons not simultaneously as we have been taught to believe. This massive three-volume work is a mere encyclopedia tracing where mankind has found its horizon, sometimes placing it theri aritficially, as in art. Goethe Faust has a prominent place here as well as early secular religions of the world, how each shares this vision of Utopia Bloch so impassioned voice seeks. Marx is here as well, and it was Bloch who for want of a better term, introduced the warmer side of the human spirit to into Marxist discourse. Bloch, as Adorno,Horkheimer, even Lukacs, were not really political animals, nor consummate players, so they each saw the Soviet Union as some hope, less Adorno, who was skeptical of everything. The early religious leader Thomas Munzer, Luther's arch enenmy during the burgeoning Reformation and the Peasant Wars is also a point of reference for Bloch. And music makes an entrance, however Bloch really never got to know modernist repertoire, his thoughts are abssorbed with the classics, Mozart,Beethovem Bruckner and Wagner all have places in his Utopian edifice.

2 out of 5 stars Bloch interpretation of religion is reductionist.......2000-04-02

Bloch, as most people know, is an "esoteric marxist", like Lukács and Korsch. Esoteric marxism is a reaction against the official leninist-stalinist interpretation of Marx. In Bloch's view, the marxists have to re-interprete the religious phenomenon. Bloch says that inside christianism there is a feeling that also -in his view, I remark- informs marxist philosophy: hope. Both phenomenons, marxism and christianism, believe in a utopia that will become true in the future. "Where is religion, there is hope", says Bloch. This feeling can unite marxists ans christians, and has to be the base for a new dialogue. I have to say that Bloch vision of christianism, like the vision of any other functionalist, is reductionist. In his conception, christianism looses all trascendence. It is a "phenomenon", like any other. He says that religion is an expresion of protest, which every marxist has to respect -typical marxist interpretation-, but religion is much more than just a protest against the statu quo, and being religious means much more than just believing in a "utopia", that in the future will become true. Religion means to believe in God. Of course, Bloch doesn't believe in God, or in the inmortality of the soul. He only appreciates the external manifestation of faith, but the most important part -God, eternal life, holyness- are nonsense for him. Bloch vision of religion is the stereotype of functionalism.

                I am. We are.

That is enough. Now we have to start.

These are the opening words of Ernst Bloch’s first major work, The Spirit of Utopia, written mostly in 1915-16, published in its first version just after the First World War, republished five years later, 1923, in the version here presented for the first time in English translation.

The Spirit of Utopia is one of the great historic books from the beginning of the century, but it is not an obsolete one. In its style of thinking, a peculiar amalgam of biblical, Marxist, and Expressionist turns, in its analytical skills deeply informed by Simmel, taking its information from both Hegel and Schopenhauer for the groundwork of its metaphysics of music but consistently interpreting the cultural legacy in the light of a certain Marxism, Bloch’s Spirit of Utopia is a unique attempt to rethink the history of Western civilizations as a process of revolutionary disruptions and to reread the artworks, religions, and philosophies of this tradition as incentives to continue disrupting.

The alliance between messianism and Marxism, which was proclaimed in this book for the first time with epic breadth, has met with more critique than acclaim. The expressive and baroque diction of the book was considered as offensive as its stubborn disregard for the limits of “disciplines.” Yet there is hardly a “discipline” that didn’t adopt, however unknowingly, some of Bloch’s insights, and his provocative associations often proved more productive than the statistical account of social shifts.

The first part of this philosophical meditation—which is also a narrative, an analysis, a rhapsody, and a manifesto—concerns a mode of “self-encounter” that presents itself in the history of music from Mozart through Mahler as an encounter with the problem of a community to come. This “we-problem” is worked out by Bloch in terms of a philosophy of the history of music. The “self-encounter,” however, has to be conceived as “self-invention,” as the active, affirmative fight for freedom and social justice, under the sign of Marx. The second part of the book is entitled “Karl Marx, Death and the Apocalypse.”

I am. We are. That’s hardly anything.

                But enough to start.

This is a great photo book of the late Dale Earnhardt. I am a Dale fan so I am a bit biased. This book has many great and colorful photos of Dale, Dale and Teresa, Dale with the crew in the car and several winners circles. The only drawback to this book was that there are no photos of Dale in his early days or none of him growning up. But I loved the photos of Dale without his famous moustache (Dale shaved it when he and Teresa went to the Bahamas one year and went snorkeling)and there are 2 photo collages of all Dale that make a larger photo of Dale when looked at from a distance. Very different and clever!!! But if you are a Dale fan then this is a must have. If you love NASCAR and want to know more about Dale then you may want to check out other books first but I do recommend it as it is well worth the money!!!!

5 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFUL PHOTOS FULL OF MEMORIES.......2002-01-07

I bought this book back in June from a parts store. And It really brings back a lot of memories of Dale. Just seeing his smile and aggreesive style in the photos really stands out in some of the photos. There are also captions under the pictures that tells the year and about the picture. A wonderful book to have full of fond memories of a true legend that will live on forever.

5 out of 5 stars The Miracle of 1060 and all that.......2006-09-01

MGM's movie, based on the book by L. Frank Baum,"The Wizard of Oz,"is nearly 70 years old. But its stars, Judy Garland, Bert Lahr, Frank Morgan, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Billie Burke and Margaret Hamilton, still shine brightly as ever, and the movie continues to be a particular favorite of young and old.

Aljean Harmetz is the daughter of a woman who worked backstage at MGM. Harmetz's mother worked in the Wardrobe Department; she was able to estimate sewing costs on thousands of costumes, from 1937 to 1951 --including the nearly one thousand needed for "The Wizard of Oz,"alone.

So starting from this birds' eye view, Harmetz is well able to explain how "movie magic and studio power in the prime of MGM" resulted in "the miracle of Production #1060." To that end, she did hundreds of interviews, with actors, singers, songwriters, cameramen, screen writers, costumers, directors, and technicians. She succeeded in bringing the great glory days of MGM, under its sentimental czar L.B. Mayer, to technicolor life.

Harmetz explains how the Emerald City was designed and built; how the cyclone was created. She tells us how Judy Garland's immortal "Over the Rainbow" was nearly lost, as envious, nitpicking producers responded after the film's first screening: "Why does she sing in a barnyard? Take it out!"

The author gives us fine portraits of Margaret Hamilton, who played the Wicked Witch of the West--"she enjoyed every moment screaming about those slippers." Binnie Barnes, who played the Good Witch Glinda, retiring to her pink and blue dressing room to await her next call. Bert Lahr creating the endearing cowardly lion-- his costume weighed over 50 pounds. "It was like carrying a mattress around with you," he said. And he could only sip liquids once in full makeup. Ray Bolger, the dancer who created the Scarecrow, " I have no bones. I have nothing inside me. It's just the wind holding me up." And Jack Haley who inherited the Tin Woodman's part after an allergic reaction to the aluminum paste makeup, put Buddy Ebsen, first cast for the part, in hospital.

You should find you read these marvelously detailed pages with great enjoyment, and if you're as sentimental a fool as I can sometimes be, even with emotional involvement. If you love the movie, you might want to try to find this book.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the movie itself... if thats possible........2003-08-09

The making of the Wizard of Oz is a wonderful book to anyone who has grown to love the Wizard of Oz. You don't even have to be an obsessive fan of the movie like myself to enjoy it. It is extremely well researched. If information is not known the author says it so and does not attempt to recreate history as some nonfiction works do.

Perhaphs what makes the 1939 movie so wonderful is learning all the behind the scenes things that went into making it. This book gives respect and a knew sense of understanding as to what movie making was like in the biggest studio of that time. It is written so that it doesn't need to be read front to back. You can start in the special effects section and finish in the chapter about the script, or the music, or the directors (did you know there were four?).

Did you know that the movie had the work of 10 writers or do you know how the surrender dorothy scene was done? Well, in this book you find out his and thousands more did you know facts to impress friends. I recommend this to anyone who has watched the Wizard of Oz. And if Oz didn't win an academy award for best picture in 1939 than that was because the academy didn't have this book to help choose.

5 out of 5 stars A Peek Behind the Curtain.......2002-07-28

If you're a die hard fan of this classic film then you'll want to read this well-researched "making of" tome. The book is filled with all sorts of wonderful trivia tidbits but most of all it gives an insightful review of those behind the camera in a way I've yet to find in other "OZ" related books. The one and only shortcoming of this book is to be found in the number of pictures, in my opinion there could have been more, otherwise it's a behind the scenes look that most OZ fans won't be disappointed with.

5 out of 5 stars What a wicked world! Me, a cult icon from an MGM kid-flick!.......2001-09-07

It doesn't matter unduly if you didn't grow up watching MGM's 1939 color movie "The Wizard of Oz" in re-release or on TV. You might think that a "Munchkin" is what used to be called a "doughnut hole." You may think of Judy Garland only as Liza Minnelli's mother, and avoid prewar movies like the plague. Maybe you didn't feel that shock of recognition that "Cora the Coffee Lady" in Maxwell House TV commercials was none other than Margaret Hamilton, the green-faced Wicked Witch of the West.

Of course, if you love "The Wizard of Oz" you've love THE MAKING OF THE WIZARD OF OZ all the more. I just read this book for the second time (the first upon its initial publication), and was astonished and pleased by how well it has held up. Author Aljean Harmetz has crafted a book relevant not only in terms of one particular "prestige" movie off the Hollywood assembly line; but indeed her insight, research and friendly presentation make the book stand as a metaphor of all Hollywood filmmaking during the height of the Studio Era, ca. 1940. Perhaps the late Irving Thalberg was one of the few Hollywood insiders who could "keep the whole equation of pictures inside his head," but Ms. Harmetz opens up this world for us, and shows us both its realism and its wonder.

We return to an era in which studio moguls were as eccentric and powerful as today's software barons, when studio hands were nonunionized yet intensely loyal to their studios, when no movie studio even thought about a future containing broadcast TV, when movie stars were better known than Presidents or Kings, and when Technicolor would give you any color except the one you wanted. Nonetheless, solving the creative problems inherent in bringing L. Frank Baum's novel "The Wizard of Oz" to the screen was seen as an invigorating set of challenges to be met and conquered.

Back then, MGM had a real "can-do" attitude. So no one had
ever created a moving tornado for a film? After two tries the MGM tech people got it right, and the depiction of that horrendous twister so set the tintype for what a tornado ought to look like that it persists in our collective consciousness today, despite today's ubiquitous video cameras.

There were no tape recorders. How, then, to raise or lower voices artificially for dubbing? This book tells how. What happened when Buddy Ebsen almost died from an allergy to aluminum dust he had worn as the (originally intended) Tin Man? Why was Margaret Hamilton burned severely and ignored, yet Billie Burke turned an ankle and was whisked off the set in a white ambulance? Why did the film need four directors and half a dozen screenwriters, yet was fondly recalled as a labor of love by practically everyone except a prematurely embittered Judy Garland? Was the film the great commercial and critical success you might think it would be? And, by the way, what about those Munchkins' alleged sexual proclivities? Excellent answers provided by excellent research present a fully-formed world view, warts and all.

THE MAKING OF THE WIZARD OF OZ would be a wonderful companion to the new restored DVD version of the film, which is so crisp you can count the gingham checkers on Dorothy's blue dress (which was actually violet, to fool the Technicolor process). How were the ruby slippers made? What about that poppy field? Read on. Some critics have said that Harmetz's later work is not as excruciatingly well researched as THE MAKING OF THE WIZARD OF OZ, but I don't care. This book and the movie are not only as much fun as ever, but a great education in the good old/bad old days of the Hollywood "Dream Factory." Don't miss it!

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Look at the Old Hollywood Studio System.......2001-07-14

"The Making of the Wizard of Oz: Movie Magic and Studio Power in the Prime of MGM--And the Miracle of Production No 1060" is just downright enthralling. It is an expose' that breaks down the machinery and the machinations of what it took to get a major movie made in the days of the autocratic studio heads. The book offers an entertaining and totally engrossing look at the legendary film. Judy, Ray, Jack, Bert, Margaret, and Toto, too, are all analyzed in this brilliant work. The songwriters, the respective directors, the many other craftsmen, as well as the "little people," in more than the figurative sense, are all here. Vividly embellished with stills from the production, the book's text is just as captivating. The familiar as well as the unfamiliar stories about the production make for a most satisfying read for any "Oz" fan. It is also a good primer for anyone with an interest in pursuing film as a career.

                    Book Description

Being a bridesmaid is one of the greatest honors a dear friend can bestow. But actually wearing the dress the bride picks out? That's the true test of friendship. You Can Wear It Again pays loving tribute to fifty years of bridesmaids' dresses, as featured in real-life weddings. The product of both fashion trends and the bride's whims, bridesmaids' dresses may take the form of medieval costume, complete with wimple; slip dresses with real feathered wings to transform maids into true angels; or the ruffled peach taffeta with puff sleeves that so dominated the 1980s. Whatever the look, you can be sure it's been in and out of fashion more than once. Some lessons are never learned. The perfect gift for current and former bridesmaids, You Can Wear It Again isn't just a showcase of bridal fashions, but a testament to the selfless women everywhere who help the bride's dreams come true.

I bought these books to give to my friends as a way to ask them to be one of my bridesmaids. It was a hit!!! The pictures get funnier and funnier with each turn of the page. It only serves as inspiration to strive a wedding that won't look ridiculous in 25 years... impossible!

2 out of 5 stars Not for Bridesmaids in their 20's.......2007-06-19

I bought 4 of these books to give to my bridesmaids as part of their gift at the rehearsal dinner. It's a cute book/good concept, but I was expecting more modern pictures. There are some classic giant-sleeved 80's dresses, but for the most part, the pictures all look like they are from the 1960's or 1970's. Don't get me wrong - the dresses are hideous to someone in their 20's, but those were just the styles back then. The fewer modern dresses in the book just aren't that bad - I've seen/worn much worse. I think this book would be funnier to someone in their 50's looking back than to young brides/bridesmaids today.

                    4 out of 5 stars Funny!.......2007-06-10

I bought this as a gag gift for my Mom because we always joke about horrible bridesmaid dress choices. She loved it - it was a little small, but good as a side-gift.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun!.......2007-01-12

My daughter is getting married and wanted to do something fun for her bridesmaids. We saw this book and new we had found the perfect thing. The pictures are "a hoot" and the book was the beginning of a fun way to say a huge "thank you" to her friends for being with her at this time. She sent a copy of the book to each one. We think you will enjoy the book. We certainly did!

5 out of 5 stars Three-time bridesmaid laughed myself silly!.......2006-09-07

Before I start, I must include this disclaimer: I'm an unabashed booster of this book, as Ms. Ilasco selected five photos of weddings I shot (the "Kathy and Carla" photo is one), and four photos of weddings I was in. But I am only one of dozens of contributors to this amazing collection!

I thought my mustard dress was bad. I thought the enormous puffy sleeves on the blue dress were ridiculous. I had no idea that wedding party attire could be as appallingly amusing as some of the examples in the book! When I received the finished book, I laughed harder with the flip of each page.

If you've suffered through a polyester or taffeta nightmare, or selected dresses for your friends you realized in retrospect were totally unsuited to their body types, you will enjoy this book.

I enjoyed this book. Dahut brings a fresh approach to have the reader think outside of the box when it comes to creating a differentiated new approach for the law firm, and the lawyer or lawyers within.

5 out of 5 stars It's All About Service for Clients.......2006-11-02

This book is a must read for legal marketers, attorneys and those who provide marketing consulting services for law firms. If you take the time to not only read the book but also, seriously think about what the author is saying, and then incorporate those ideas into your the culture of your practice or the firm's practice, you will be rewarded.

Dahut's book is definitely not typical of the books one finds in the legal marketing area that tell you how and what to do. Rather he presents a powerful case that attorneys and law firms need to become client centered and to do so by changing their way of thinking to the perspective of the client. Further, Dahut believes that "... most of marketing is about providing superior service within the context of the client's specific needs and wants."

Attorneys and law firms need to become client centered and provide service that meets the client's needs. So, go buy a copy - read it -- then go implement it.

2 out of 5 stars Not for the solo lawyer; not about marketing, except for the author.......2006-08-25

I was disappointed by this book. I am a solo litigation attorney, and I read the book to get ideas on marketing. It gave me some ideas. Perhaps the most valuable idea was to focus more on customer service; Dahut has an interesting discussion about exactly what that means and how we can do it better. By and large, however, this is a book by and for big firm attorneys. It is about big firm angst and how it can be combated by hiring experts such as Dahut to do extensive consulting work for your firm. Dahut does not acknowledge, and does not care, that most attorneys are solos or work in small firms, and that we have very different issues than agonizing over whether we have lost our soul by conforming too much to dead firm culture.

5 out of 5 stars Strong ideas - useful and inspiring.......2006-06-26

This work is really true to its theme - it offers new perspectives on how to see business development and because of this new perspective, it makes the process very managable. I stongly recommend this book to anyone who is really serious about growing their practice.

3 out of 5 stars An OK effort.......2006-03-20

the book was a quick read. after a few chapters, the message becomes repetitive.

From the supplier: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is required by law to print its final regulations for food product labels by Nov 8, 1992, under the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990 (NLEA). Though not required to do so by law, the Department of Agriculture will issue regulations similar to the FDA's. Nutrition labels will be mandatory for most food labels. Claims for food stuffs can use only specific terms delineated by the NLEA regulations. Brand names will have to conform to the new regulations once terms are defined. Health claims, serving size on labels, and advertising will all be regulated. FDA enforcement of labeling laws will continue during the phase-in process.
