I've had this book for a while now, I would guess it to be written at a teenage level. The photographs are interesting but usually well known, if you collect much British Royalty material you will already have most of them. I do like it better than the video Prince William: Behind the Headlines.

Earl Greenwood was no relation to Elvis nor was he an employee or press agent - his account of himself is a fabrication from start to finish. I'm not sure what is more appalling - that Greenwood/Tracy invented this book, or that the Library Journal (and David M. Turkalo) would publicly laud such a blatantly false work.

1 out of 5 stars The Worst Book I have even Read.......2004-01-23

If you are not a big Elvis fan this is not the book to read because there is so many untruths in it, you will get the wrong impression of the man Elvis was. I have read a great number of books on Elvis and this one has to be the worst one. No one that knew Elvis even knows who this guys is??? He made numerous errors in telling his story. Such as he said Gladys, Elvis's mom went to Germany with him and then died in 1960!! Untrue - she died in 1958 before he left for Germany. He dated Dixie Locke before he made it big but was still dating her when he was signed to Sun Records. She did not break up with him because he asked her to marry him. They had talked of marriage but unforuntaely it did not last long because he was gone so much. He dated Anita before going to the army and for a while after he was discharged. He did not play in Vegas while he was making movies in the 1960s!!! And so on and so on. There are to many to mention here but I can say that this was a BIG DISSAPPOINTMENT and a waste of my money. DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON THE PIECE OF TRASH BELIEVE ME YOU WILL BE SORRY.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I had hoped for.......2002-11-19

I've read many books on Elvis as I'm always trying to gain new information to help me understand his complex personality. I had high expectations for this offering because of its focus on Elvis' early life and relationship with his mother. However, I found the general tone of the book to be sensational. The sex "revelations" don't seem to be anything more than lurid details the like of which can be found in any tabloid. Everyone knows Elvis was a wonton womanizer. It's hardly news at this point. I found there to be many mistakes and inconsistancies throughout the book. One is so careless as to describe Elvis' first girlfriend, Dixie Locke, as a blond then two pages later she is in picture showing a girl with black hair. The whole thing just read like a trashy novel to me.

      5 out of 5 stars Zig-Zag Elvis.......2000-09-19

I read Mr. Greenwood's book and found it very informative and personal. The book takes the reader through Elvis' personal life and marriage and numberous love affairs. It depicts the Colonel's control over Elvis and possible black mail. It depicts how the people he was associated with over the years were mainly there for the gravy. An excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars a wonderful and sympathetic portrayl of the Rock 'n' roll.......2000-01-21

Ruth Anne Kocour found herself in the middle of a brutal storm with 100-mph wind blasts and plummeting mercury. Problem was, she happened to be bivouacked halfway up North America's highest mountain, Alaska's 20,320-foot Mt. Denali (also known as Mt. McKinley). Facing the Extreme is her story of survival against the elements, a struggle that required every last bit of physical and mental endurance--not to mention alpine skills, resourcefulness, and luck. By the end of the storm, 11 climbers were dead. Kocour's gripping tale is one of the few of its kind written by a woman, a refreshing change of voice that reflects a changing demographic in the outdoors community.

                  Book Description

She stepped into a death zone. The climbers on Alaska's Mt. McKinley called her "the woman." Ruth Anne Kocour, a world-class mountaineer, wasn't bothered. It was part of the challenge she faced as she joined an all-male team to conquer North America's highest peak....the mountain the Indians called Denali, or God.Faced the extreme. But nine days into this ascent, a forty-fifth birthday present to herself, the most violent weather on record slammed into the mountain. Ruth Anne and her group would be trapped on an ice shelf at 14,000 feet for the deadliest two weeks in Denali history. Pinned down by blinding snows, unable to help other teams dying around her, and her own feet freezing solid, Ruth Anne tells of a wind chill of minus 150 degrees, deadly hidden crevasses, and being trapped in a place so violent and unforgiving that it threatened to push her over the edge and into a place of no return. And yet, in prose as crystalline as the ice around her, she tells, too, of beauty, courage, and the spirit that drives true mountainers higher, as she risks all to go for the summit....and perhaps, for a transcendant moment, touch heaven. And lived to tell about it.

                  Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and disturbing.......2004-01-05

This book is a great companion read to "Into Thin Air" and the lesser books from that 1996 moment because it, in a refreshing and unique way, exposes the folly and incredible stupidity of some of the people climbing mountains now days. Kocour gives unforgettable and near-comical insights into some of the characters she found herself among on a serious mountain expedition. But this is not a light-hearted book. You'll forever remember the fellow-climber who claimed to have been a tour guide on a particurally famous mount, only to accidentally reveal later, while lacking oxygen, that he'd only been a tour-guide at a recreation of the mount at DisneyLand.

1 out of 5 stars A whos who in the climbing world.......2003-10-01

Ruth Anne Kocour, the greatest female climber of all time documents her extreme valor in saving all souls on the mountain. Climbers live by a certain code, we help each other. Ms. Kocour apparently believes she is above and beyond helping the sick and dying climbers. She believes that "the best thing mountaineers can do for others is to take care of themselves". When sitting in camp, not even a particularly high camp at that, climbers help one another. The summit is the goal but it is not what is most important. Ms. Koncour could not find the time to help out a climber who was in need of medical attention because she was busy clearing snow from her tent, something she did every few hours. she could not help this wretched soul? Remember she is only at 13,000 feet. While this may sound high, it really is not. Conditions in a storm of the magnitude experienced that half week on denali are not fun, but the situation is not like K@ or Everest where medical help and resupply may be an impossobility depending on ones altitude. THe height that Ms Koncour refers too is still well within range of airplane and helicopter support. What we learn from this book and Ms. Koncour is that if ever we are on a climbing team with her, find another team, you wont regret it. Based on rep alone, i would not climb with her.

                  4 out of 5 stars A refreshingly different perspective.......2003-09-18

Facing the Extreme, by Ruth Anne Kocour was a welcome addition to my growing collection of mountaineering stories. Unlike most 'epic' stories, I found this one to offer a little more insight and to be a little more personal than other stories I've read.

I didn't pick up this book because it was a woman's story, although it WAS nice to read a mountaineering adventure from a woman's perspective. I suppose that it's inevitable that I would find myself identifying more strongly with a woman but I think that men will really get a lot of of this story too. I suspect that we all share similar dreams, fears & emotions where mountains are concerned. Kocour just seemed to be able to articulate the experience better than most.

That being said, there is certainly no shortage of technical information... much of which was new to me. I enjoyed learning some of the inner workings of a high altitude mountaineering expedition. Facing the Extreme was more comprehensive than most books in this regard.

The challenges and tragedy faced by this group during the worst storms to ever hit Denali were incredible. What I particularly appreciated was the way that (I believe) she remained true to the experience and did not get caught up in sensationalizing the event. Even more surprising is that I never felt that the story was too slow. Detailed descriptions of day after day of being trapped in a cramped, frozen tent could have been almost as torturous to read as it was to experience but not in this book.

Rather than breezing over these parts of the adventure, Kocour described with honesty I'm not sure I could summon, her personal struggles, thoughts & feelings & her observations of team mates' experiences.

This is a wonderful, personal & unpretentious story. Anyone who has experienced the seductive, almost gravitational pull of a mountain will appreciate & enjoy the experience of reading it.

4 out of 5 stars Practical Examples of a Positive Attitude.......2002-10-03

The author was part of a team that spent ten days on an ice shelf on Mount McKinley, trapped by a storm that packed 110 MPH winds, minus 47 degree air temperatures. The team of nine mountaineers (2 professional leaders and seven amateurs) became the first group that reached the summit in 1992. When reading this book, you feel like your friend is sittling beside you telling their dramatic story.

What makes this book unique is the candid descriptions of the author's thought processes and sensations. I read many books about how to succeed and reach goals and most of them suffer from vagueness. This book does not have a single platitude about attitude. It describes clearly and practically what she does to keep herself on track.

For example, when food got scarce, one of the team members lined up for seconds before everyone had eaten first. The author tells her reaction.

"I looked away to hide my growing rage from Craig and anyone else who might be looking my way. I worked to focus on the beauty that surrounded me instead of Jack's selfishness.

All around, hues of pink washed the sky and melded into the soft blue shadow of the earth against the atmosphere....."

She is illustrating an important success principle- that each of us determines where our attention goes. Through controlling our attention and thoughts, we can change our emotional state. She shows this to us- here and throughout the book. Her descriptions of conversation make for interesting and gripping dialogue, although she does come through as overly critical of others at times.

She tells her motivations for mountaineering, the dynamics of the team, and the actions of the two professional guides that made them effective leaders. For example, at one point, she has trouble with a weak and exhausted teammate who is roped behind her. The leader asks her what is wrong and puts that team member behind him, taking the hardest task on himself.

She conserves energy, turns inward, has a great sense of humor, and solves problems. This book would help management consultants and seminar leaders for examples of success principles.

2 out of 5 stars If you read only one book about climbing...........2002-07-17

...well, I'd say read Jon Krakauer's Into Thin Air. Or even Boukreev's The Climb or David Brashears High Exposure. I thought this book would be interesting because it's a different summit and a female climber. It does move at a brisk pace but it's definitely not up to par with the other titles.

To be fair, Kocour is not a professional writer. And while her interment on Denali might have been suspenseful for her, considering most of it was spent tentbound in a blizzard where she never appears to be in real danger there's not a lot going on for the reader. She is also (as other reviewers have observed) rather ungenerous towards her fellow climbers. Even her tentmate, the only one she seemed to get along with, gets described as "pleasant to look at, though not particularly handsome." And despite the assistance of a professional writer, some of the wording is awkward bordering on hilarious. Example: on complimenting one of her guides upon reaching the summit, she calls him "a tribute to his family's storied mountaineering history." Who talks like this-hands? Her ethnic stereotyping of some Korean climbers is also tiresome.

Still, it's an easy read and it does have some interesting detail about Denali and climbing in the death zone. And it's one of the few mountaineering books that I've seen written by a woman. So, read at your discretion.

This is basically a storybook illustrated with some great art. This art is in the form of original storyboard sketches, workbook drawings, background paintings, and production stills. A handy Index is of Illustrations is included for art lovers. The story is told with a few lines on each page as written by Christopher Finch. The only insight into the movie's production is a three-page introduction by Producer Don Hahn. The overall result is some great viewing, but I was disappointed by the lack of hard information.

                  Book Description

When it comes to Hollywood, Christians too quickly wash their hands of popular culture and leave this immensely influential media to unbelievers. In truth, the industry is listening. There is a church in Hollywood, but too often their work is unrecognized. Behind the Screen offers a glimpse of Hollywood insiders who, through their jobs on movie sets, behind TV shows, and in radio broadcasts, work together to give glory to God. With contributions from the writers and producers of such productions as Joan of Arcadia, Mission Impossible, Batman Forever, That '70s Show, and others, believers everywhere are encouraged to join with the church in Hollywood and do their part in closing the gap between Christianity and culture.

5 out of 5 stars God and the Movies.......2007-02-18

This a must-read for any Christian who is thinking of writing for the screen or TV. Each essay is a "gem of insight" both into the art and thematic substance of movie-making, especially when Christianity is concerned.

In addition to witty and thought-provoking arguments, none of the writers take a "high and mighty" posture. In fact, you don't have to "read between the lines" to find actual humililty - from successful directors, producers and writers yet! - as well as fine-tuned critical thinking.

If you're not Christian but still interested in writing for the screen, then you might want to better understand the tensions that exist between Hollywood and so much of the American Church. This book will provide many worthy angles. It's well worth your time.

5 out of 5 stars Best Advice for Christians on Hollywood.......2006-12-03

For decades devout Christians have hunkered in their religious bunkers trying to hold off the "world" -- and occasionally tossing a flaming sanctimonious protest out of their hole, hoping to change the world so it would be "safe" for their kind. If only, while they were down there, they would read the Gospels and discover that their hero (Christ) was rarely more than an arm's reach from the kind of people Christians try to separate themselves from... and telling stories in the process. For 30 years I've encouraged Christians to "Pray for the Christians attempting to influence our society with Biblical values and ideas through their vocations in Television, Film, Art, Entertainment, Literature, Journalism, Education, Academe, Professional Sports and Politics. God has called these individuals and gifted them like Bezalel (Exodus 31, 35, 36) to be Salt and Light to our culture." And if you're so led, "Consider a career as a cultural influencer. As a Christian you can light some candles in the darkness of our society. Prepare for a career in secular media or entertainment. Then, as you excel and gain recognition, use your influence to impart Biblical Christian values to the world." I know many of the writers in this volume, and I continue to pray for them. They are doing what the rest of us should be doing en masse.

5 out of 5 stars Critique on Behind the Screen: Hollywood Insiders on Faith, Film, And Culture.......2006-07-10

This is excellent resource material for those discerning a vocation within the Hollywood entertainment industry. This book affords a clear perspective into the myths and realites of living out one's faith while working in Hollywood.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Inspiring.......2006-07-08

The essays contained in "Behind the Screen" look at the Christian's place in Hollywood. Where should we be and how can we get there? Why are Christians ignored or misunderstood by so many decision makers in Hollywood?

This book offers intelligent, creative responses to these questions from a variety of viewpoints proving that Christians aren't a monolithic blob, but rather thinking people who want to entertain and be entertained.

5 out of 5 stars Behind the Screen reveals the real Wizard.......2006-05-15

Behind the Screen is full of anecdotes and wisdom from people I've heard of and people I haven't, but all of them have a Christ-centric worldview and a desire to excel at their craft.
Most essays were sharp and gripping, especially for non-fiction (to a fiction-loving, motion picture guy.) Having read quite a few of the "Christians-in-Hollywood" books, BTS provides the most chewable nuggets and real-world applications, even for those of us who will never be Hollywood-bound.

4 out of 5 stars good book, but another card counter advocate.......2007-07-27

This is a good book overall, lots of good info., discussions on BJ myths, stresses basic strategy. Fun to read, well written and recommended reading. It refers the reader to other books on counting. My only objection is that counting is almost worthless in todays shoe games and use of auto shufflers. For every counter that gets lucky and wins consistently with a razor thin edge (coinflip), many others go broke. The author states he is a full time counter, but also mentions his wife makes an above average income, while the back of the book lists the other things he does for income. So I doubt he makes a living playingblackjack. Even so, I liked the book.

5 out of 5 stars A casual, humorous, and thoroughly .......2005-08-11

Poker and Blackjack have gained enormous popularity in the last few years thanks to televised tournaments from Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and various Indian Gaming Casinos from around the country. This has also spawned a small publishing phenomenon of "how to" books in the field. The Blackjack Zone is one of those and has mathematician Eliot Jacobson [...] writing in a casual, humorous, and thoroughly "reader friendly" an introductory book on the game of Blackjack. Jacobson explains what Basic strategy is and how to use it; how to become an advantage player; how to choose the right game, dealer and casino; how to separate myths about Blackjack from the realities of the game; and how to think and act like a winner. An easy and informative read, The Blackjack Zone is especially recommended for anyone wanting to have the very best chance of coming out ahead in a game where the casino would otherwise have the edge.

Are you new to the field of project management and don't know where to start? If so, this book can really help you. If you are an experienced project manager and have struggled with issues of teamwork and having a successful project launch session, then this book can help you. Or have you been handed a project in disarray that needs major disaster recovery work? Again, this book can help you.

In Cheetah Project Management, the emphasis is on the team: "If the team is aligned on its project priorities, then it will better understand and work towards aligning its actions" notes the author. Using a team-based approach, the author takes the reader step by step through an e-commerce project case study and demonstrates how to build team consensus on customer/stakeholder requirements, who needs to do what and when, individual roles and responsibilities, determining the critical milestones in the project, identifying and assessing risks, and preparing accurate cost estimates including a clear understanding of cash flow needs and level of effort.

Ms. LaBrosse defines Cheetah's Accelerated Project Management as "A process that covers the complete framework for a project team to quickly launch its projects, initiatives and ideas." She then takes you through that framework demonstrating how, in just one day, using the methodology, templates and techniques she provides, a project team can develop a complete project plan covering customer/stakeholder requirements, project scope, project schedules, and project budgets. Building upon the eight components of the accelerated project management (APM) framework, she shows project teams how to:

                  * Clearly communicate with people on the project team and stakeholders/clients about the project.
                  * Accurately define the problems the project will help stakeholders/clients solve.
                  * Specify the requirements of the project in terms of how stakeholders/clients will use the project deliverables.
                  * Clearly define the end points of the project to rein in costs.
                  * Create a high performing project team that is aligned on their roles and responsibilities.
                  * Determine exactly what is needed to get started with the project and what represents completion (and success).
                  * Create measurements to ensure the project meets stakeholders/clients' acceptance criteria.
                  * Define reviews and approvals at each stage of the project.
                  * Assess, quantify, and prevent risks that could derail the Project.
                  * Define the priorities of the project in terms of cost, schedule, and quality.
                  * Identify the constraints and conflicts on doing this project.
                  * Determine the staff and resources required to complete the project.
                  * Create dependency schedules of the interim deliverables with an easy to visualize graphical mapping technique.
                  * Use a quick three point estimating technique to calculate budgets associated with work and resources needed to get the job done.
                  * Adjust the project plan based on issues that arise during the execution of the project.
                  * Record the lessons learned in a way that can used to improve the next project.
                  * Identify how to use what has been learned doing this project.

Although Ms. LaBrosse clearly focuses on the project team, she recognizes that individual roles and responsibilities must be well defined and agreed to by team members. She observes, "When everyone is responsible, no one is accountable." A key feature of Cheetah's Accelerated Project Management is single point accountability, meaning that one person is specifically responsible for each interim project deliverable, including risk countermeasures.

One of the clear strengths of this book is that it is reader friendly. It is not loaded down with jargon, nor does it preach its message. Rather, it presents a simple and straightforward methodology and guides the reader through it in a clear and readily understandable manner loaded with lots and lots of examples and clarifications. Simple tools and techniques are presented along with easy to follow templates. In determining risk probability and impact, for example, she employs a "highly scientific technique called the gut-feel index (GFI)".

The eight components of the APM framework are Project Launch, Project Agreement, Teaming Guidelines, Planning (including Risks), Scheduling, Staffing and Budgeting, Project Tracking, and Lessons Learned. Ms. LaBrosse presents and explains these components in a clear and effective manner. Noting that "People can achieve whatever they put their minds to", she provides the means by which a project team, working together, can achieve a highly successful and productive project launch event.
