Product Description
This story paints a vivid picture of upper class Victorian life in England as well as the life of immigrants in North America during the Depression. More importantly, it is a testament to the power of character and values.

New information at a time this was hard to accomplish.......2007-01-27
Excellent insights; especially into the behind the scenes elements in Tyson's life - or lack thereof. The darkness of Boxing is exposed by the accounts of the deals made without the neccessity of finding smoke-filled rooms.
While you may find it hard to pity Tyson of today; it's easier to understand the path he's taken after the reading of this book.
No one word in the English language can describe this man!.......2006-07-25
This book gets five stars alone for the great investigative journalism and stop-at-no-ends-to-get-the-truth reporting.
This kind of writing is getting rarer and rarer given sooo many writers -- especially of sports book -- come with a slant that once you get beyond it's timeliness, really paints the author in a worse light than the subject/team/issue they wrote about.
This is by far and away one of the best books I've read in a long, long time.
Mike Tyson as ... mindless brute to be feared? con artist too smart for his own good? endlessly incredible athlete to be respected? menace to be locked away? and self-destructive, innocent manchild predestined to failure?
These are all concepts that are explored and in depth in this book.
I honestly can see all of the aforementioned perspectives!!!!!
It's interesting but the writer supports each of these ideas enough that you really can't automatically tell just from reading this book what opinions/conclusions the writer actually reached on a personal level -- and this book is all the better for it.
Mike was one of the most physically awesome athletes of the 20th Century and he also said/did some disgraceful things.
Mike is yet another pro athlete that fell victim to all the vulptures who saw him and used him as a meal ticket.
And he's also on woeful little boy who grew into a man who acted out his childhood traumas.
All in all, is he a hero or a monster? A man who just didn't take responsibility for his actions or someone to be pitied because of his (inherent?) personal inability to do so?
You have to read this book and THEN make the call. It's not as easy as you might think.
Bad Intentions: The Mike Tyson Story.......2006-01-03
Buy this book read & see why Mike Tyson was the greatest Boxing Champion ever.
Tyson will always Rule!
Reads like a good novel, informative but needs another update.......2005-09-04
Bar none, this is the best book I've read about Tyson. It's full of facts and direct quotes from loads of people who worked with/against Tyson, as well as the man himself. It's also a great book for someone like myself- a fan who loved Tyson the boxer but always found Tyson the man to be a jerk, albeit a sometimes misunderstood one.
This book traces Tyson's history from his reckless juvenile days in the streets and the Tryon home for outcast boys, all the way up to Don King, Robin Givens, and his rape conviction. There's a subsequent update chapter that describes the goings-on after his release, but this is just a few pages long and stops before his first post-jail fight with Peter McNeely. It's interesting, but it's very short. Fortunately the book itself is a meaty several hundred pages.
Its outdatedness is the only real problem with the book. Originally written in the mid 90s, it describes everything up to his rape conviction in great detail. It reads like a page-turning novel, a tale full of treachery and corruption - the honing of a wayward youth into a disciplined fighter and his subsequent recidivism. The book is completely objective, as well. It shows us the sweet side of Tyson, and makes no bones about the fact that he had one. But it's also crystal clear that he was a beast, giving us many examples of Tyson's primitive and criminal behavior. Beloved trainer Cus D'Amoto isn't safe either, for there's evidence in this book (which I'd never seen before) that shows he wasn't just a sweet old man who took Tyson in and raised him as his own.
But in addition to discussing main characters like these, people like Robin Givens and Don King are discussed in great length as well. They emerge as the real villains of the story, as well they should. Everyone knows how badly they affected Tyson's career, and the book traces all the details of how and why. In fact, King has his own lengthy chapter, giving us a full portrait of the man's history and questionable relationships with countless people on his way to Tyson -that's how thorough this book is.
Long story short, it's a shame that this book doesn't continue past Tyson's imprisonment and brief release, because it's a greatly researched, open-minded, passionate and thorough account of Tyson's career as well as boxing itself and loads of the people on Tyson's periphery. Loaded with insight from other boxers, scholars of the sport, and many (like Teddy Atlas) who worked with Tyson himself, it's a very broad offering of information. Pick it up whether you like the man OR hate him, it's a fascinating read.
Mike Tyson is the Man.......2004-07-16
I am a huge Mike Tyson fan, and this is pretty much required reading for any Tyson fan. If you want to know about Mike, read this book. Provides lots of information, and Peter Keller really picked a great title. This book takes you through all of Mike's various stages, and each is fascinating: From Mike's early years in Bronwsville as the kid who was teased on as a young child, to a bully by age ten, a hardcore criminal not long after that, a Cus D'Amato disciple at age 13 who soon moved to Catskills, a pro in the making and a ferocious fighter as an amateur for five years, a pro at age 18, the death of D'Amato, a champion at age 20, a superstar and legend not long after that, the blowout of Michael Spinks, and then of course there is Don King, Robin Givens and her mother, the divorce to Robin Givens, the shocking KO loss to Buster Douglas, the rape conviction, and then the beginning of his post-prison comeback.
Unfortunately, that is where this book ends, so there is no mention of all the other fascinating stuff in Mike's life after that.
One thing that some readers might not like is how Keller goes into deep detail on virtually everyone in the Mike Tyson story, and explains their background, history, etc. Ordinarily, that would put me off, but since I am such a huge Tyson fan, I was interested in knowing about Don King, Robin Gviens, Cus Damato , etc.

The Great Movie Stars.......2005-06-13
I have always enjoyed this book, but I feel Mr Shipman could have done a similar book on Silent Stars. Unfortunately, like too many authors he despises the thing that he says he admires. The silent era is crying out for a similar detailed account of the actors who made the film industry what it is today. Another criticism is that there are too many personal opinions which sometimes border on snobbery. It is wrong to judge stars of the twenties and thirties with the attitudes of today. The film star industry started with Florence Lawrence and so should all books on films.
An excellent guide to the stars that made the cinema golden........1997-04-06
Mr. Shipman has put together the definitive guide to the stars that made their mark before WW II. From Abbott and Costello to Roland Young this book covers most of the major stars. If you buy only one reference book on vintage Hollywood's greatest make it this one. You won't be sorry
Product Description

Before we can reach today's youth with the turth of the gospel, we need to see what they see and hear what they hear. We need to catch the messages encrypted in their culture and understand what's really being communicated. In Engaging the Soul of Youth Culture Walt Mueller, founder and president of the Center for Parent/Youth Understanding, helps us to navigate the troubling and confusing terrain of teen worldviews so that we can effectively and compassionately pass along good news: our God is their God, our Savior can be their Savior.
Customer Reviews:
I rarely give 5 stars, but this..........2007-08-25
Engaging the Soul of Youth Culture by Walt Mueller brings together the principles of cross-cultural communication and applies them to the cross-generational situations found in Christian youth work. He deals with modern v. post-modern worldviews and the need for understanding and listening to help understand the emerging generation in order to effectively minister and communicate the gospel to them. Those who have read books dealing with postmodernism may feel that it drags here but he is writing to parents as well as youth workers and is assuming that some have no idea what postmodernism is. Also, those familiar with cross-cultural mission authors will be familiar with the principles that he lays down in the book.
Like some other recent authors who have written on the subject of the Church and culture, Mueller does a good job of explaining the two main relational errors we see in regards to youth culture: Fundamentalism and Syncretism. He warns of the fundamentalist error of cocooning away from culture and thus seeming out of touch with those you seek to reach. He also warned of theological and moral error that comes from compromising with culture and thus loosing the message of the true gospel and the moral authority to preach it.
I highly recommend this book to all Christian youth workers. I have read several boos on the subject and this book reflects a man who has spend decades of thoughtful work in youth ministry. As I read it, I felt like it was a fine, mature wine that had taken a long time to get to the way it was. The author has reflected and studied the Bible in relation to these issues for many years and the intellectual depth is evident. The author is 50 + and yet he naturally quotes from films and bands like Nine Inch Nails in a way that is not fake or forced.
The not only has Biblical and cultural depth, but I believe the book to be extremely relevant to a lot of the questions we are asking in the church at this time. Some may find little new here if they have been reading books dealing with these questions of culture, but Mueller brings these ideas together and applies specifically to the area of youth work. Long before words like "culture" and "engaging" became trendy in the Church, this man was pioneering the subject and applying the principles that the evangelical church in the West only now seem to be rediscovering. It is as if the message has been simmering in the man for decades waiting for such a time as this.
Finaly..........2007-08-21
If you have felt lost in this new world we live in, this is the book. As a youth pastor this book was relevant and inciteful. It gets to the roots of what lies under today's youth culture. It is written in a way that is hopeful and handy. I have recommended this book to everyone I know. It is good for volunteers and "pro's". It is good for rookies and veterens.
I am only 32 years old and this generation is living in a world that is foreign to the world I grew up in. This book was so helpful.
Get them while they're young.......2007-04-23
Some part of every generation embraces fascism. But ultimately humanity comes to its senses. I still have hope anyway.
New Take on Ministry.......2006-11-06
I ablolutely loved this book. I enjoyed Mueller's approach to Youth Ministry--as missions. The youth culture of today can be so diverse and distant that it looks like a foreign mission field. It is very important to investigate carefully what is really going on. His statistics are frightening. I suggest that anyone who is involeved with youth should read this--the parent, the YMCA associate, teacher, or the local Youth minister.
Right on Target.......2006-06-25
Perhaps you've read books in the past that give you that "aha"! And other books that give you that distinct impression that you're not nearly as smart as you thought you were (there are quite a few books that fit that description for me!) Walt Mueller has accomplished both for me. As a 12 year youth ministry veteran, I've never read a book quite so realistic in its portrayal of youth culture today (with the exception of perhaps, Chap Clark's *Hurt*). At the same time, unlike Clark's work, Mueller brings a great deal more practical hope... that the gap between youth culture and "adult" culture, while expansive, is very much crossable when the Gospel, mixed something so simple as our committed presence and willingness to enter into their world, incarnationally, as it were. Please do not read this book as another "ministry made easy" type book. It just won't do justice to the breadth of Mueller's insights and the depth of his empirical study of this culture (or for that matter, to the unique difficulties inherent in youth ministry). And make no mistake, it is a culture, with it's own unique language, worldview, and ways of social/relational engagement. Mueller's book is a great road map to engage the soul of youth culture. That's his thesis, and he delivers.

Short and sweet BUT..........2003-04-14
This book is a great SUPPLIMENT to other baccarat books, such as John May's Baccarat For the Clueless (a misleading title for great book) or Frank Scoblette's book on baccarat, the title which I have forgoteen but it has something to do with "attacking" the game. To get back on track, this book goes over possible counting strategies and various other good info, albeit in a technical manner, it concludes that although good situations do come up and card counting at baccarat can tell you when they do, it is simply not worth it. Even with the best counting system, you can barely pull a dollar an hour in expected value, so it's really not worth it, especially since games like blackjack can give you a helluva lot better edge. But if you want to learn some cover games to avoid heat and know more about the math of the game, this book is great. Get John May's book for a history and other methods besides counting for beating this game. I gave Winning Baccarat strategies 3 stars instead of four or five, is not because it's short, but because there is a section on ESP as a form of advantage play, which I find completely rediculous. But it's a good addition to your library, and although it's a bit stiff [money amount] it's the only book with a counting system and math and the rest of it.
BACARRAT HELP?.......2001-08-16
This book is far too technical with computer decisions and very little help when i"in the trenches".The counting required is strenuous and I quit using his system when the deck was player favorable and the cards, in their random mix, failed to produce. a player could handle 2-3 shoes before burnout. The casino edge includes player burnout which causes stupid bets. Thats why the dealers change every 20 or so minutes. I have beaten bacarrat only when I anticipated the unexpected, a tie.

Customer Reviews:
If you are only going to read one Economics textbook in your life..........2006-01-20
This book, although extremely long, wastes no space in its presentation. Of all economic textbooks I have encountered, this is the only one that explains clearly and precisely everything about world development, citing failed and successful examples in history. If you ever wondered what the driving forces behind policies in the world were, you need this book. Priceless.
Excellent book.......2001-09-22
This is one of the best books in economic development ever published. Written in plain english, so it's easy to understand, even for non-economics students. Highly recommended for graduate students, professors, and professionals interested in economic issues of developing countries.
Excellent ... But ... !!!.......1999-08-21
This is an excellent academic book ,but it needs updating in light of the recent global developments. Basically it is missing a detailed analysis of The spread and effects of Globalization. Maybe there is a new edition in print now ???
