Must Buy For All Business Students!.......2007-08-24
I took Henry Cheeseman's Business Law class at USC and he is an amazing professor! His book shows it all. Out of all my textbooks in my undergraduate and graduate studies, this is by far the most easy/fun to read textbook, while explaining everything in detail with many case examples!
If you want to get a general idea of what exactly law and business law is, then this is the book to buy. After reading this book, my interest in law sparked! I am actually planning on reading through it one more time to refresh my memory!
Packed with relevant information, page by page.......2007-05-06
This is the first college textbook that gets five stars from me. In his preface to the students, Dr. Cheeseman calls this book a labor of love. He did not exaggerate. It really shows that this book was written for students. The field of business law is vast, but Dr. Cheeseman manages to cover the essential in one book.
Page by page, he delivers relevant information. His explanations are short and to the point. He reinforces the concepts with carefully selected cases. One of the book's strong features is also its structure. The chapters are organized in a logical and easy to follow fashion. Finally, one gets a little intercultural perspective through Dr. Cheeseman's photography from places and people all over the world.
In short, this book's got it. I give it two thumbs up.
Best Business Law Intro Book.......2007-02-05
Very well written introduction to all aspects of Business Law. Includes up-to-date references and lots of examples. If you want to learn the basics of business and corporate law then this book is for you.
Great overview book of Business Law.......2007-02-03
This book is full of useful information regarding business law and takes into consideration the ever changing world of international business and e-commerce. I found the book to be easy to read and the use of cases to clarify the type of law or statute being discussed helped to tie everything together in a format that could be understood by the average student. I would suggest this book to anyone who wants a reference manual on business law to keep on their shelf and is a interesting reading for business law classes.
Good book that isn't overly dense with difficult wording, full with pertinent cases.......2006-11-14
I really enjoy readnig from this book, which can't be said for all the books I read for class. This books presents information in an easy reading manner and is full of many pertinent court cases. I think the inclusion of so many cases is important as it illistrates concepts while at the same time keeps the readers attention since they are real world settings that are more easily digested.
The only downside to this book, and thus one reason for only four stars, is its large size, which is probably common for most business law books. This book is very hefty! I like reading outdoors at a park or sitting on a bench and this book was mostly too large for me to do this. It would be beneficial to have this book either split to two books, or in an electronic version so that only the sections to be studied can easily be taken with the reader.
Overall great book!

Book Description
This accessible, attractive, and interesting book enables readers to first solve those differential equations that have the most frequent and interesting applications. This approach illustrates the standard elementary techniques of solution of differential equations. Precise and clear-cut statements of fundamental existence and uniqueness theorems allow understanding of their role in this subject. A strong numerical approach emphasizes that the effective and reliable use of numerical methods often requires preliminary analysis using standard elementary techniques.
The first few sections of most chapters introduce the principle ideas of each topic, with remaining sections devoted to extensions and applications. Topics covered include first-order differential equations, linear equations of higher order, power series methods, Laplace transform methods, linear systems of differential equations, numerical methods, nonlinear systems and phenomena, Fourier series methods, and Eigenvalues and boundary value problems.
For those involved in the fields of science, engineering, and mathematics.

Helpful for math majors only.......2004-12-04
I've used this book during my differential class over the last semester. The problems in the book are carried out well and the back of the book has even and odd answers to help your understanding. For math majors, this book is great because it really wants you to "experience" the world of diff EQ, but for engineers or others taking it as a side class, it doesn't offer good examples for getting the job done. A good instructer can correct this though. As a book, 3 stars.
Very good.......2003-01-23
Fast and its just brand new, he never opened the books
Good book but a strong background on calculus required........2000-09-06
This book will tell you everything you need to learn on differential equations. It covers thoroughly the methods for solving first and second order differential equations. The book also extends into Fourier transforms. I used this book at MIT for the differential equations class and found it very useful. Within its contents, matlab exercises are present and some simple projects which lets the student apply its knowledge. The only problem with the book is that it can be hard to read at certain points. Also the author assumes a strong background in calculus.

Wish I could give it zero stars........2007-07-13
This book is too choppy, unstructured, and an incredible bore. Allison Wier writes better novels on Henry VIII's wives.
engaging.......2006-01-20
I found myself unable to put this book down, as with Doner's other book (Infinite Darkness, Infinite Light), I loved the interwoven story line, and must confess, I had to stop myself from skipping ahead to see what was happening.. I think this portrayal of the Royal court shed light on the inter aspect of Katherine Howard's emotional life, a perspective which has had little written about it prior to this work. I am someone who loves stories of court life and I was so happy to find this jewel.
My book club really enjoyed LIes and Lust..........2006-01-04
This book was "lightweight" in terms of size -no doubt, but still an excellent read that took us into the heart of Katheryn. This tale offered a different spin on the Tudors. The women in our book club felt Katheryn's every emotion. Doner's novel is saucy and different- not all historical fiction has to be lengthy to be enjoyable.
A self-published, 156 page novel: 'nuff said?.......2005-12-27
The first 5 reviewers here are obviously the best friends of Margaret Doner! This is a skimpy foray into too deep waters for a beginner. Have you ever read a good Tudor biography that was only 156 pages long? Can you imagine that there are any significant facts, details, insights in so few pages? Well, you're right--there aren't! What we do have are stereotypes (dirty old king, lusty Chaucerian wench, stupid courtiers, etc.). What is most egregious is that there is never even an attempt to explain why and how Catherine and her cohorts could have made so many stupid mistakes, how they could behave as if there had never been an Anne Bolyn: that's the mystery that has always fascinated me about Henry's "rose without thorns," but you'll find no answers here. Please save your money, your time, and be a bit more patient. Eventually, someone is going to write a truly good historical novel about Catherine Howard.
Tutored on Tudors.......2004-07-17
A rollicking read that is well-researched and well-written. Based on the known history, the author imagined what it must have been like to be Kathryn Howard, the young Queen, in her time and circumstance. You don't usually get this kind of sizzle with such solid writing and historical accuracy.

A prequel to Heads or Tails: Stories from the Sixth Grade
Inspired by the author's childhood diaries, this new collection of Jack Henry stories depicts a fifth-grade year to end all fifth-grade years. Living in a Miami rental home with a busy railroad track running a stone's throw from the backyard, the author's alter ego is plagued by a know-it-all older sister, a bizarre Francophile teacher, a series of crazed cats, a slightly off-kilter father, a tapeworm, and a pair of escaped convicts -- to name just a few of his antagonists. But for Jack Henry, hailed by School Library Journal as "an 'everyboy' whose world may be wacko but whose heart and spirit are eminently sane," no matter how rough the ride, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

The wack jack.......2005-05-06
Jack on the Tracks is a funny book . If you enjoy anything funny then this is a good book to read . My favorite part is when Jack was watching the news and lightningstruck their t.v. Jacks mom was screaming her head off while smoke was coming out of their t.v. Or when his cat froze to death because it got stck in the freezer. If anyone enjoys a good laugh I would recommend this book to them .
A Book Report on the Tracks!.......2005-05-03
Jack on the Tracks was a hilarious book.I can relate to Jack, at times. Like when Miss Kitty got ran over by a train, my cat got ran over by a car. O.K., maybe I can't relate, but thats not my point. I had a lot of favorite parts, but my all time favorite part was when the family found Miss Kitty the third frozen in the refridgerator. By the end of the chapter I thought I needed a breathing tube I was laughing so hard. As you can see, I loved this book, and I'd bet you'd love it too!
READ THIS adventurous BOOK.......2004-04-30
The book I read was Jack on the Tracks. This book I read kept me wondering what would happen next. My favorite character in this book is his sister,Betsy. I also liked the cats he had. Number one and two. I would suggest this book to kids or adults who like wondering what happens next. So be sure to grab this book with your others.

Book Description
First Lady of Tennis is a short biography of Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman, the donor of the Wightman cup for international tennis play and the first honoree in the University of California women's athlete hall of fame. She won innumerable national championships in tennis, and took two gold medals in the 1924 Olympics.
This book traces Hazel's career and her honors, but it also details Hazel's lifelong dedication to teaching the game. She profoundly influenced leading players on both coasts, teaching, housing, and feeding them, leading to her nickname "Queen Mother of Tennis."
Book Description
The daring raid on the great dams of western Germany by Lancaster bombers of 617 Squadron in May 1943 is probably one of the best known and most widely told stories of the Second World War. In 1955 the raid was immortalized on film by director Michael Anderson in The Dam Busters, starring Michael Redgrave and Richard Todd. It became Britain's top grossing film of 1955 and in the half-century that has followed, thanks to its almost annual airing on the small screen, it has become a film classic. It is also a firm favorite with aviation enthusiasts due in no small measure to the breathtaking flying sequences featuring the Avro Lancaster. Tucked away in the Pinewood Studios archives are hundreds of rarely seen 'still' photographs from the making of the film. Including everything from storyboarding to location shots, and from the stars and personalities to the aircraft themselves, it is estimated that only about 10 per cent of these high quality pictures have ever been published before. In this book they are supplemented by stunning and previously unpublished air-to-air photographs, taken by the aircrews who flew the Lancasters on camera. Drawing on eyewitness accounts and interviews with film unit and flying personnel, Filming the Dam Busters evokes the optimistic outlook of the new postwar Elizabethan Age, when British cinema had a force and reach not equalled before or since.
Customer Reviews:
Nigel Wilkinson.......2007-08-07
This is an excellent addition to the film which is rated as one of the best of the Second World War.
Falconer does it again............2005-10-23
Jonathan Falconer has written a very accessible and informative account of the making of one of the best war films ever produced, the story of the innovative and daring WWII mission by the RAF's famed 617 squadron destruction of the Mohne' and Eder dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley in May 1943. For Falconer, this book is a labor of love and follows on his excellent and well illustrated book "The Dam Busters" about the raid itself. With that love comes a committment to detail and thoroughness about the filming of the 1955 movie..finding the by then scarce four Lancaster bombers to use in the film, their modifications including painting different idenifications on both sides to allow the filmakers to create the illusion of more than four planes, lead actor Richard Todd who played Wing Commander Guy Gibson's insistance on wearing the same hard to find Luftwaffe flotation device the real Gibson wore and prized, how the filmakers improvised to show a bouncing bomb which when the film was made was still a secret. The book includes descriptions of filming the flying sequences including some harrowing low level formation scenes over water, and interviews with the pilots who flew those scenes. There is also a description of the post production work in the days before digital special effects including construction of giant models of the dams and their environs. The resulting production was not only a very popular film in it's day but also a well researched, accurate description of the real story itself. The film lives on as a recently released DVD. Anyone who has seen the film will find this book informative, well illustrated, and a worthy addition to ones library on WWII aviation, movie making, or the Dams raid itself.
Book Description
What started as a game of Pong, with little blips dancing across a computer screen, has evolved into a multi-billion-dollar industry that is changing the future, making inroads into virtually all aspects of our culture.Who are the minds behind this revolution? How did it happen? Where is it headed?
In Smartbomb, journalists Heather Chaplin and Aaron Ruby take the reader behind the scenes at gaming conventions, into powerhouse think tanks where new games are created, into the thick of the competition at cyberathlete tournaments, and into the homes of gamers for whom playing a role in a virtual world has assumed more relevance and reality than life in the real world.
Customer Reviews:
Just a few points short of a high score..........2006-05-17
THE GOOD: All things considered, Smartbomb is an excellent book. It's well paced and paints an exciting portrait of an exploding industry. Following in the footsteps of "Game Over", "Trigger Happy" and "Joystick Nation" the authors present a dynamic overview of the gaming scene. All the usual suspects are here (Miyamoto, Bushnell, Carmack...). Instead of just rehashing the same stories and personalities found in other books they manage to squeeze out a couple of new gems. Who knew that Will Wright has been working on "Spore" (aka "SimEverything") for 8 years now? Or that he wanted to call "The Sims", "SimDollhouse"? The bits on Miyamoto's family life and a clever retelling of his 'cave games' proved insightful. They also did a great job capturing the inventive atmosphere that spawned video games in the first place. Probably the most interesting (and frightening) section though, featured the American military's take on video games as a recruiting tool. The blunt nature of these conversations and giddy allusions to "Ender's Game" and kid soldiers left my jaw on the floor. The fact that the American government promotes this agenda while demonizing games as corruptors of youth speaks volumes.
THE BAD: As much as I enjoyed reading the accounts of those featured here, the overall aim of the book left something to be desired. While it's true that a Tony Hawk game can sell more copies than a Britney Spears album and no one will know who made it - generating some sort of "star culture" found in other industries won't help. If anything, it will damage the industry. There are already enough megalomaniacs chomping at the bit to earn the label of "the next Carmack" or "the next Miyamoto". The fact of the matter though is that people like Miyamoto and Carmack earned their chops back when teams were smaller, the stakes lower and projects much smaller in scope. Surely there will still be visionary characters that raise everyone else's game but it will most likely be a collection of individuals working together, shaping artificial reality as a cohesive whole. Not very sexy I'm afraid but that's really where we're at.
THE UGLY: This is more of a nit-picky game nerd thing but I found some of the inaccuracies in this book a little disappointing. Crediting Yu Suzuki as the creator of Sonic the Hedgehog is like giving Michelangelo credit for painting the Mona Lisa. Luigi appeared in games before "Super" Mario Brothers, and it's QuakeCo"n" not QuakeCo"m". These are admittedly obnoxious things to point out but it made me wonder if some of the other sections of the book which I wasn't so familiar with were in fact accurate.
Criticism aside I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Hopefully more people will point to this book as a document of the exciting, positive aspects of video game development.
The Best Book about the Game Industry.......2006-04-17
Simply put, Smarbomb is well-written and insightful. The words on the page are enjoyable to read, and the portrayals of the movers and shakers of the industry are the kind of writing you usually find in award-winning literature.
This is rare -- writing about games is usually not very interesting nor does it presenting views that challenges or makes you think. Trust me, I know. I've worked as a video game designer, and read far too many books on the topic.
That's probably this book's biggest strength -- because of the way it's written anyone can enjoy it: gamers, game-makers, or people who've never played a game before in their life.
Fantastic overview.......2006-02-25
I read about the videogame industry constantly as part of my job, but I got more of an overview of the pioneers and personalities involved in the development & running of this industry.
The only complaint I had about the book was I thought it should have given more of a background about the 900 lb. gorilla in the industry--Electronic Arts. Even so, a very enjoyable book for anyone interested in how the videogame industry came about & the personalities behind it.
The history of how this country become involved in video games.......2006-02-07
The video game industry is big money these days, powered by a blend of computer geeks and business mavericks who have turned it into a big business - and Smartbomb: The Quest For Art, Entertainment, And Big Bucks In The Videogame Revolution traces the history of how this country become involved in video games. Authors Heather Chaplin and Aaron Ruby went on a five-year investigation into the history and technology of the video game explosion, gaining access to design labs and business meetings alike: Smartbomb examines both individuals and trends in a survey of models, legends, and achievement.
Great Read For Anyone That Plays Videogames.......2006-01-16
Smartbomb is a great book for anyone interested in the gaming industry. Whether you're currently working in (or trying to get in) the industry or if you're just the casual gamer that sometimes wonders who are some of the people that put out the top games. The people the authors "hang out with" throughout the book are icons of the gaming industry. Guys like Shigeru Myiamoto (Nintendo), Will Wright (The Sims), John Carmack (Doom), and many others are talked about in the book. Also, the book focus on some of the people and events that have made the game industry a huge success. Events such as CPL and GDC are just two of the many events covered throughout the book.
The only downside (if you can call it that) was the way the setting and time would change randomly within the same chapter. Other than that, the book is flawless.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn a little something about the "behind-the-scenes" business side of the gaming industry.

What's missing from Corporate Earth.......2007-08-29
Just finished reading this book and I am overwhelmed by both the simplicity and the depth of the story and the message. There are just too many situations in real life that reflect the events in this book. The "tribe" is still alive and well and here to stay. Whoever is able to apply the concepts in this book skilfully will surely reap benefits as a great boss. Hope to become one of those people soon.
Very good book for team building and dynamics.......2007-03-31
Great Boss Dead Boss is a great novel that follows a new fictional manager through his trials in trying to change an organization. Through the novel you are introduced to various concepts (call dimensions and attributes) and dynamics that make a strong team or organization. As the character works with the dysfunctional organization he struggles to identify and apply various concepts to get them back on track, bond as a team, and overcome the common challenges they face. This is a very good book if you are looking at ways to build a better team within as a group or company.
Don't Diss My Tribe.......2007-02-22
For the last few years I've been building my company to have a specific type of self-reinforcing corporate culture. There is still authority, there is still people with assigned roles, but I wanted my group to feel truly energized about working on our products and projects.
I have noticed over the years that management books recommend a lot of activities but the subtext was always this: communication is the heart of a good environment.
My psychological training (sorry tom cruise) has also given me great insights into what motivates and what demotivates people. But those mechanistic models of action and reaction were always searching for a unifying construct.
Ray's construct is tribal behavior and balancing our need to feel good about ourselves and the groups to which we belong.
In essence, people tend to gravitate toward groups that reinforce their self-worth. Traditional business structures tend to rigidly group people and, by doing so, people identify with smaller groups of their own design rather than their larger corporate or office group. The results are seldom good.
When I was working for a large consulting company, I was initially part of and later the lead of their Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Group. We had millions of dollars in contracts every year and, despite the work we put into educating the planners and engineers of what we did - they would routinely sub out ITS work.
At first we thought they were not getting what it was we were doing. But in reality what was happening was that they got much more value from subbing out our work. This value came from raising their stature in planning / engineering by being the "Prime" and maintaining their relationships with other companies thereby ensuring future work for their group.
Their tribal needs (engineering or planning tribes) were better served outsourcing the work, when our tribal needs (ITS tribe) would have been better served by keeping the work in house?
Who was right? Well, we both were. But in the end, the lack of communication between our groups created an adversarial atmosphere which impacted relationships and quality of work throughout the firm.
I find some holes in Ray's model - for example I find it a bit weak on the outside issue front. There are people out there who have issues outside the office that directly impact their response to things inside the office. Ray does cover this, but compared to his attention to detail on the rest of his model - this part seems a little weak.
Having said that, his model is sound and a great construct to help diffuse otherwise tense situations. You can be told that angry people have an unfulfilled need and that the proper response is to find out what that need is and discuss it all day ... but when someone is yelling in your face that's pretty hard to zero in on.
With Ray's model, there is a short cut to analyze the type of threat (as opposed to the specific threat) the person or group feels and then deal with that.
We're in the process of creating an employee manual and it's been bothering me for quite a while. It's rigid, dictatorial, and top-down. Great Boss Dead Boss has given me an inkling of how I'd like to re-create the concept of an employee manual. ... but it's just an inkling.
Lastly I'll note one other element of this model: when you think of your organization as an entity - as a tribe or whatever - it's important to give that entity substance. Substance that comes from a strong definition (not a mission statement) and a good sense of self.
Oddly, I had been working on that for the last few months. Gathering up the lore of Gray Hill Solutions, identifying why our processes work, and incorporating those two things into a single narrative to better explain why we do the things we do.
Suffice it to say, I'd highly recommend you read Ray's book.
Oh, and it's a narrative. But don't let that stop you.
Indiana Jones meets Eli Goldratt.......2007-01-04
While I've finished reading this book for the first time, I'm just now going back and digesting some of the tastier nuggets Ray has offered up. This isn't a book I'll read once, but one I'll dig into as my own perspective grows. As a fellow ToC person, I was expecting a novel in that vein, and, to be honest, there were several respectful nods to Eli's _The Goal_ but the similarities stopped there.
I've enjoyed looking at several organizations (business, congregations, etc.) through the lenses he proposes and am impressed by the clarity I've gained. To paraphrase George Box, one of the most influencial experimental scientists of our time, "All models are wrong, but some models are useful none the less." Certainly there will be people who find fault in Ray's model, but I would be certain that many, many more will recognize the usefulness of the ideas he set forth and that this book will attract the readership it so richly deserves.
Bravo & Thanks!
Easy read, great content!.......2005-09-19
Written as a business novel, this must is a must read for every business owner. I'm adding this book to the "Dr Lisa must read list"!
Theory of Constraints implementations typically results in substantial results in a short amount of time. However, there are occasions where the results are not so big and/or not so fast. I believe Ray has captured the reasons why.
