Book Description

Few individuals have had as profound an effect upon the British monarchy as Camilla Parker Bowles. The mere mention of her name elicits strong opinions. To some, she is a person of immense honor and dignity, a loyal consort who has risen above the jibes and accusations that have been directed at her. To others, she is a destroyer, whose position as the third member of a royal marriage led to the break-up of Charles and Diana, and to the tragic events that followed. The truth, as this book reveals, lies somewhere in between. Charles and Camilla have so far remained silent, keeping the details of their abiding relationship a secret. Caroline Graham, who has spoken to sources close to the couple, here reveals a story of grand passion, cynical betrayal, and sexual subterfuge. Caroline Graham is highly regarded as a royal commentator. Now living in America, she is the U.S. correspondent for the Mail on Sunday.

1 out of 5 stars Who In Their Right Mind Would Write This Book A DISGRACE TO PRINCESS DIANA"".......2006-10-04

A woman who broke up the marrige of Princess Diana along with her husband Prince Charles.Who admitted to never loving Diana on a TV special.Charles & Camilla consorted to make Diana appear as Diana would say Looney.Diana dies a suspicious death in paris almost one year to the date of her divorce from charles.Diana sealed her fate when she went on Al Fayed's yacht. The establishment as Diana called the royals said she was a liability to the crown.Diana was & would never be free to live the life she allways wanted. The royals seen to that Diana came up removed by death. So Camilla the Horseface & Charles the Pig got married.Never in a million years would i buy anything from these two people.Give this book a -20 forever?????

4 out of 5 stars A Different Take than Some .......2006-07-28

In response to some who run to the defense of Diana, and regard any other view as gossipy, there are other sides to a story, and the fact was that there were many, many more than three in this marriage, Diana bringing into it an enormous amount of "lovers", starting early in her marriage with her own infidelities, and after reading about every book there is on this triangle, and Diana herself, it is nice to see some authors presenting Charles and Camilla's side to the story in a decent, mature way. Diana used the media to trash this woman for years, not considering what her actions would to do others, while the entire time she was dabbling in numerous adulterous affairs, so in all fairness, it is nice to read a study into the other side of the story, written with compassion to the other players in this scenario, compassion that Diana and her journalists never gave them, while covering her own indiscretions, which were to numerous to imagine. Diana was a master of using the media to put out the story that she wanted a naieve public to believe, and sadly there are too many followers of hers that still will not believe that there is another story to be told, and am glad to see authors that are willing to give us the other side to this story, and if they tend to put Camilla in a good light, perhaps the woman merits some of that, goodness knows she has been trashed enough by Diana and the journalists that she had eating out of her hand!!! Good for Ms. Graham.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Wish Prince Charles and Camilla A Wonderful Life.......2005-04-09

They met when they were young; now some thirty years later, they are still together, and still very much in love. How long will it take for their love to be fully accepted by the public? This is a great love story, yet Prince Charles and Camilla still deal with slurs and scorn every day. Haven't they earned our respect? In my opinion, they have. How many people do you know who are still so much in love after thirty years? They deserve the fondest and best wishes from everyone. Even Diana, if she were still here, would have agreed, by now.

1 out of 5 stars What is the decency of this author?.......2004-03-04

She will justify anything coming from Camilla and Charles, gossiping like Lady Campbell and attribute every single fault to Diana. Where is your moral? Camilla was pestering this couple for all these years, insincere in wanting their best. Why she didn't get a life ? Leave the poor couple to live peacefully? She really stole another woman's husband. I imagine how much Camilla is paying to this wretched author to write this sordid book. Diana should have sent or hire someone to eliminate this bothering woman in the first place. This will put her in her right place. But Diana was decent in just getting out of this sham marriage instead of persisting it despite all the privileges of royal life. She was being far more honest in wanting to terminate it than many women who will stay in this sordid marriage just for the food.

3 out of 5 stars Update of an older book.......2003-08-26

This is just an update of an earler Caroline Graham book, The King's Mistress. I dont beleive that the author was being very objective in her treatment of the subject matter. The late princess Diana is not portrayed in a good light, whilst Camilla is seen as just a woman in love. She comes across as so very caring, kind, giving and loving, its a wonder her own ex-husband didn't hold on to her. Overall though, the book is well written and does give some insight into the woman who may or may not be queen.

Anyone with even a passing interest in baseball can't help but look on in amazement at the 2001 Seattle Mariners. After losing heavy hitters Ken Griffey Jr. and Alex Rodriguez in back-to-back seasons, the Mariners have gone on to play "a new ... beautiful brand of team baseball." Mariners' rookie right fielder Ichiro Suzuki--who "like Madonna or Cher or Pelé, went only by his first name," as author David Shields writes in the introduction to his compilation Baseball Is Just Baseball: The Understated Ichiro--is the first Japanese position player to play in the majors.

There's an exhilarating fascination surrounding the young, sphinxlike All-Star and the global audience that tunes in to watch him snag home-runs-in-the-making from the sky. A fixture of baseball highlight reels, he's the first rookie ever to draw the most overall votes for the 2001 All-Star Game (held at Seattle's Safeco Field). Ichiromania even inspired fans to camp out overnight for a chance to claim a bobblehead doll cast in his likeness. Ichiro is much more than Japan's version of Michael Jordan--he's a cultural phenomenon (it's reported that Ichiro's the most recognizable person in Japan, with the emperor running a distant second).

Author David Shields is no stranger to the Seattle sports scene. He chronicled the 1994-95 season of the Seattle SuperSonics in his critically acclaimed book Black Planet: Facing Race During an NBA Season. Shields, too, was swept up by Ichiro's "smart, subtle play" and humble persona, and compiled this collection of Ichiro quotations. The slim volume is packed with elegant wisdom, unexpected observations, and a refreshing sense of optimism from No. 51. Shields wonders, "Was I trying to impart philosophic significance to simple athletic excellence? Maybe the words acquired a lyrical glamour as they got translated from Japanese to English?"

When Ichiro was asked to analyze a particularly acrobatic catch, he replies: "It was a fly ball; I caught it."

On why he hasn't gotten into any arguments with major league umpires: "So far nothing has bothered me."

Individually, Ichiro's "haunting aphorisms" possess the beautiful complexity of Zen koans; together they read like The Tao of Ichiro. --Brad Thomas Parsons

Book Description

Ichiro Suzuki, the rookie All-Star right fielder for the Seattle Mariners has the sports world transfixed. Author David Shields was at first entranced by Ichiro's smart, subtle play--just what the Mariners and Seattle needed. Then he was entranced by what Ichiro said--his smart, subtle words. The result is Baseball Is Just Baseball: The Understated Ichiro, a 120-page quote book of Ichiro in his own words. This selection of quotations takes the reader from Ichiro's decision to play for the Mariners to spring training to the regular season and up to the All-Star Break. It's a fan's book, a wisdom book, life-lessons for kids, for baseball fans, and for wisdom-seekers alike.

Shields says that "Ichiro seems to me to 'get' life, to be in the groove, be in the moment, to have the secret. He mixes Zen distance with Zen focus. According to the Chinese aphorism, 'A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step'; Ichiro is very good at focusing on each step."

Experience reality rather than your expectation of reality. Believe in yourself. Don't take yourself seriously but find an activity to be passionate about and take that activity very seriously. Don't buy the hype. Dissolve hate into love. Care more about the process than the product. Find joy in the seeking itself. Such are some of the simple but profound, powerful ideas embodied in this prize of a little book--a document of not only a popular athlete but an impressive human being. In just the first half of his rookie year in the majors, Ichiro has fully captured the imagination of fans in Seattle, Japan, and everywhere. We've certainly not seen the end of his great run; as Ichiro himself said: "I'm planning to turn on the power after the All-Star break."

5 out of 5 stars He's Just Here for Baseball.......2002-07-11

This book, especially for Mariner fans, was a nice look at one of Seattle's most loved baseball players. The book holds a nice variety of quotes from various newspapers from the East coast to Japan. By reading this amusing and highly enjoyable book, the reader is able to learn a number of different things about Ichiro, such as his success in Japan to his struggles (not many, but some) in spring training. A nice touch to these quotes is that each time Ichiro speaks, his words are put in italics. This book portrays Ichiro as who he is: a man here to play baseball.

5 out of 5 stars Great stocking stuffer.......2001-11-22

What a terrific way to find out about the inscrutable superstar! His batting average is matched by his efficiency with language. Even my 3-year old son enjoys the short quips in this book.

1 out of 5 stars 120 pages of Ichiro saying nothing through a translator........2001-10-26

This book is called "The Understated Ichiro" but I think the author mistook "understated" for "having nothing to state".

The book is a collection of Ichiro quotes from interviews with people other than the author. Each quote is framed dramatically on a single page with the thoughts of Ichiro Suzuki highlighted for effect.

Just a few of the pearls of wisdom contained in this book:

Asked how he thought he'd be affected by the grind of the major-league season, which is 32 games longer than the Japanese season, Ichiro said, "I can't say how it will affect me, because I've never experienced it before."

Asked before the season started, what he thought major-league baseball would be like, Ichiro replied, "I have no idea what it's going to be like. I can only imagine what it might be like, so I'll just have to experience it."

I can only imagine what the author could have been thinking when deemed these and the other 115 similar quotes in the book worthy of print. I haven't seen such a pure example of fanatical drivel since I used to read my sisters Teen Beat profiles of Lief Garrett. A polished gem.

1 out of 5 stars Tao, Schmao.......2001-10-10

This isn't a book. It's a farce. It's actually a collection of mostly one-line quotes -- one per page in this epic tome -- pilfered from local newspapers in Seattle and Tacoma. The great pearls of "wisdom" being described here as some form of simplistic genius are little more than a series of trite quotes offered up by one of Ichiro's translators. Save the dough and do a web search for "Ichiro" on the Seattle Times or PI website. You'll have 90 percent of the text for free. This is a shameless attempt to cash in on the guy's instant celebrity status. You'll find deeper insights into baseball and life on the back of a cereal box.

5 out of 5 stars Another Hit.......2001-10-05

When Ichiro Suzuki signed with the Seattle Mariners, NHK Television, Japan's equivalent to PBS, in an unprecedented move, negotiated to broadcast not a few, as is the norm, but ALL of the Mariners games in 2001. (Even Hideo Nomo, a local hero in his own right, who went to the LA Dodgers, didn't receive this much broadcast coverage.) Now the two most watched baseball teams in the Land of the Rising Sun are the Tokyo Yomiuri Giants and the Seattle Mariners.

As a long-time resident of Japan I have watched Ichiro make behind-the-back catches since he was in high school. I was amazed when, during one of the All-Star games (they play a series), Ichiro shifted from the outfield to the pitchers' mound and threw like he did such a thing every day.

While friends and I attend a few games a season, I'm just not a big baseball fan...until Ichiro plays on TV. After-work cocktails with "the boys" more often than not starts with someone asking, "Did you see what Ichiro did today?" Expletive-deleted comments are usually centered around "unbelievable!" Now these sessions include "Baseball is Just Baseball".

Ichiro is a hero to all of us here in Japan and this book shows, beyond the remarkable playing skills, why. In a time when big bats are usually accompanied by big mouths, Ichiro shows the world that it just doesn't have to be that way.

Great reading and here's hoping David Shields can put out a new volume every year.

Another really good Tribebook for Werewolf's revised setting, this Tribebook does just what it's supposed to: it informs you on the Shadow Lords in the revised setting. After getting through a film-noir type fiction, we get into a brief description on just who the Shadow Lords are and why they do what they do. They're in defending the mother at any cost. No wonder they can seem treacherous and brutal. We go through a brief history of the Shadow Lords, from their distant homelands in the steppes of Central Asia to the rise of the Ottoman Empire to the fall of the Soviet Union. Some neat sidebars on things like the Mongol branch of the tribe, the troubled relations with the Silver Fangs and even actions to appease the Bat totem for the actions of Conquistador Shadow Lords long ago fill out the chapter.
The next chapter is filled with information on Shadow Lord spirituality. Stuff about Shadow Moots, views on Gaia and the Triat, stereotypes about auspices and breeds (and surprisingly not as harsh on Metis as one would expect), an overview of the litany, totems (mainly Thunder and his brood) and so forth. Of particular importance here the various camps and secret societies. All the old camps, from the Bringers of Light (who infiltrate, spy on and subvert minions of the Wyrm from within)to the Children of Crow (spies and informants) to the Judges of Doom (enforcers of justice) are mentioned. The major secret societies have all fallen far from the Lords, many being actively hunted. However, I was particularly interested in the Children of Bat, a new camp dedicated to appeasing the Bat totem. Naturally, the Shadow Lords homelands in Eastern Europe, Russia, Spain and Latin America (as well as elsewhere in the world) are explored, as well as views on other Tribes and supernatural beings (especially their hated vampire foes).
The next chapter fills us in on mechanics. Shadow Lord views on Backgrounds are approached, as well as a new Background to make up for the lack of Allies! We also get a whole lot of Tribal and Camp-specific Gifts. Alot of them are hold-overs from Werewolf: the Apocalypse and Werewolf: the Wild West re-written for the revised setting. However, there are some great new Gifts, including some taught by Bat totem. Alot of brand new Rites are also given, as well as new Totems (Crow, Typhon and Bat!) and Fetishes (including the Assassin's Klaive) and a nice new Talen to help cut down on Vampires. Theres also a couple neat Merits and Flaws in there too.
I was taken back when I looked through the back of the book, as the majority of the Shadow Lord templates are actually pretty cool! So are most of the Lords in the "famous Shadow Lords chapter". One is the founder of the Judges of Doom (and is really frightening). Another, "The Iron Maiden" was a vampire hunting metis with no physical deformity... but a terrible curse. Theres also a Shadow Lord woman struggling against both vampires AND Pentex, and a potent Theurge redeeming the Bat totem. And of course, theres the Margrave Yuri Konietzko. However, by far the coolest was a Shadow Lord based off the Beast of Gevauden! In the story it even contains an ironic twist for Jean Chastel as well.
Over all, this was an excellent book, and is well worth it for adding depth to any Werewolf game

The eigth Tribebook in the series, this one explores the history of the Shadow Lords. It includes new Gifts, Totems, abilities, Merits and Flaws and Fetishes. The layout is in the usual Tribebook format, and it is well put together. There is a reasonable exploration of the culture and society of the Tribe. There are ready-to-play templates included as well

                        Book Description

Prospecting, the process of contacting the right people with the idea of converting them to customers, is a critically important activity in the sales process. Since the stock market decline in 2000, financial professionals-many for the first time-are finding they need to prospect for customers.

Author and financial services professional Scott Kimball advocates that reps cut their book, or client base, dramatically and follow his proprietary prospecting process. Called the ""Top Gun"" method after the renowned U.S. Navy flight school, this process provides individuals with the strategies and tactics they need to perform at levels usually never reached by the average financial salesperson.

Kimball's Top Gun Prospecting for Financial Professionals is the only book to focus on prospecting for the financial services professional. It covers all aspects of the process, including contact management systems, lists, advertising, cold calling, direct mail, networking, seminars, referrals, the Internet, attitude, and time management.

                        Readers will learn how to:

                        * Execute and track the success of the four major prospecting process components.

                        * Identify new, rich sources for clients.

                        * Maximize the efficiency of the filtering/qualifying process, ensuring that salespeople meet only with highly qualified, ""ripe"" prospects.

                        * Approach prospects so they agree to a meeting to discuss their financial situations.

2 out of 5 stars Helpful but unrealistic.......2006-06-03

As a financial advisor who built his book partially from cold-calling, it was refreshing to see that somebody else understands that it is a powerful business builder. However, a lot of what I read appeared to be unrealistic. For example, the author claims to coldcall everyday, yet, has been in the business for 20 plus years and limits his practice to 50 households.

4 out of 5 stars Cold Calling is Still the weapon of choice in the 21st Ceuntury.......2005-06-23

I read this book in one sitting. I think it is remarkable, not for the techniques (nothing new), but that cold calling is so highly endorsed by someone who specializes in the high roller client base. I believe that the financial services field is the Army Ranger unit of professional selling. These guys make their living off a group of people extremely savvy and resistant to sales people.

His motivation is remarkable and made me want to get back on the phone. I appreciate his staightforward style and his comparison of cold calling with other techniques such as seminar selling and mail out leads.

                        I highly recommend it.
