Customer Reviews:
worth the money, honey!.......2007-01-19
I checked this book out from the public library, and kept renewing it...then when I could 'renew' no more, I sat down to make copies of Favorites.
When the number of Favorites got past a half dozen, I surrendered and bought the book. There is a 'home' quality and moisture retention in Honey that isn't possible with processed white or brown sugar. Gotta luv it!!
Truly delightful!.......2002-04-29
Whether you're a cook, a gardener, or just have a sweet-tooth, this book is great fun -- a real pleasure visually and reading-wise. The history part is fascinating and well-written, the recipes look sumptuous, and the crafts seem simple enough to do with a minimum of preparation and time. It's really beautiful and a great gift -- I love my copy so much, I'm getting one for my mom!

Book Description
Michelle Kwan, Alexei Yagudin, Elvis Stojko, Anissina and Peizerat the names of today's greatest figure skaters are as evocative and magical as their stunningly choreographed programs. These brilliant young skaters, and many, many more, are spotlighted in this richly illustrated book for every fan of the world's most elegant sport.
Figure skating is a sport like no other. Combining grace, incredible athletic ability and true showmanship, every competition is exhilarating and highly entertaining. Anything can happen on the ice and often does. As the fans of figure skating know, beauty and danger add up to the greatest show on ice.
The team of Gerard Chataigneau and Steve Milton combine their love of the competition and many years of experience photographing and writing about the skaters to produce a wonderful tribute to the stars and their art. With biographies and statistics,
Figure Skating Now offers a fan's eye view of the competitive world of international figure skating at its highest levels.
What youngster has not dreamed of flying gracefully across the ice in a glamorous costume, astonishing onlookers with a perfectly executed triple flip and a dizzying scratch spin, as the music rises and falls with each move? The extraordinary photographs in
Figure Skating Now show brilliant young stars doing precisely that. This is an ideal book for dreamers, skaters and armchair fans alike.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Photography, That Glossy Skating Book That's Fun To Browse Through.......2006-06-23
I only have the first edition of Figure Skating Now, so if I mention some skaters that dropped off the scene around 2001, that's my solid explanation why I did. Figure Skating Now is a better buy than Icestars because of it's wonderful photography and solidly edited profile info, and, after I buy a book, my fetish is to see if the pages "smell" good, and if you're on the same page with me and my fetish, then Figure Skating Now is a top-notch book because of it's forever-glossy smell contained in it's pages. Still, you have to remember that Figure Skating Now is not an informational guide to figure skating, like The Official Guide To Figure Skating, it's simply a book with extremely nice photography, glossy pages, and well-edited if not very informative, profiles of the top skaters in the world today. In that aspect, it's simply classified as a just-so-you-know book that fans of skating, particularly female fans, will love to flip through and chant a chorus of "Ooh!s and Aah!s" about over their favorite skaters. In that sense, it is similar to Icestars, only it's edited much better.
It basically gives profiles of all the four aspects of skating (mens, womens, pairs, and ice dancing) and the top skaters in each category (examples include Evgeny Plushenko, Michelle Kwan, Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao, and Barbara Fusar Poli and Maurizio Margaglio). Some other previous skaters whose profiles were featured include Alexei Yagudin, Todd Eldridge, Sarah Hughes, Maria Butyrskaya, Jamie Sale and David Pelletier, Elena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze, Marina Anissina and Gwendal Peizerat and Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kratz-retired skaters featured in the 2001 edition, the majority who competed in the 2002 Olympics before announcing their retirement. My point is that I would get the more updated version of Figure Skating Now (the 2nd edition) just to be more updated in your knowledge of the biggest stars in figure skating. Overall, this book is fine and is worth the money if you want a glossy skating book with nice profiles of your favorite skaters, if you want a book describing the comprehensive history and knowledge of figure skating, this isn't the one to get, but it doesn't claim to be that. In fact, it succeeds extremely well at what it claims to be.
Difficult to know which edition is which.......2004-12-30
The second edition (Sept 2003) does feature Sasha Cohen and is up to date - loads of photos very good info for the new or experienced skating fan.
Good for "New" Skate Fans.......2003-07-06
This is a good introduction to the current stars of figure skating. If you have read books about skating and they have told you about recent stars then this book won't do you a lot of good. It does have a lot of good photography and does include info about some people that you don't normally find in other books. One other thing is, because it reviews figure skaters who did well in the 2001 worlds, it does not include Sasha Cohen considering she was out with an injury that season. It really depends on you if you want to get it or not. If you love reading skating books then this is a great book, but if you'd either only want to read about the champions or read about them once this isn't the book for you.
i thought i would get better.......2002-12-28
I got this book and was excited, but they wrote about such pointless stuff, its good for a quick ref i guess. They also didn't include skaters such as Sasha Cohen (:}) but oh well, don't buy it!
Great Book of knowledge.......2002-03-06
I recommend this book to anyone that wants to know the gossip on how the latest figure skaters got to where they are today. With lots of great pictures of all stars including Michelle Kwan, Sarah Huges, Irina Slutskya, Elvis Stojko, Alexei Yagudin and much much more from all around the world.

Book Description
"Everyone who worked with Maria Luisa longed to work with her again because she was such a wonderful, inspirational woman. She had great guts and she broke new ground as a director."--Julie Christie. Maria Luisa Bemberg, who died in 1995, is one of Latin America's most popular film-makers. The only woman director in the region to have achieved consistent international success, she made her first feature at the age of fifty-eight. Born into a traditional, aristocratic Argentine family, her films focused above all on women's issues. The six features she made between 1980 and 1993 all have female leads who seek to transgress limits: from Camila O'Gorman, executed in the nineteenth century for her love of a Catholic priest, to the remarkable nun Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, Mexico's foremost colonial poet and intellectual, whose enquiring mind was a threat to the discipline of the Church. Bemberg was, as in the title of her second film, senora de nadie, nobody's woman. This is the first major study of Bemberg's work. It contains the views of those who worked with her--her producer, cinematographer, script writer, and actors--along with her own comments about her work.

Book Description
Sixty-two of the most accomplished Jews in America speak intimately—most for the first time—about how they feel about being Jewish. In unusually candid interviews conducted by former 60 Minutes producer Abigail Pogrebin, celebrities ranging from Sarah Jessica Parker to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, from Larry King to Mike Nichols, reveal how resonant, crucial or incidental being Jewish is in their lives. The connections they have to their Jewish heritage range from hours in synagogue to bagels and lox; but every person speaks to the weight and pride of their Jewish history, the burdens and pleasures of observance, the moments they’ve felt most Jewish (or not). This book of vivid, personal conversations uncovers how being Jewish fits into a public life, and also how the author’s evolving religious identity was changed by what she heard.
Dustin Hoffman, Steven Spielberg, Gene Wilder, Joan Rivers, and Leonard Nimoy talk about their startling encounters with anti-Semitism.
Kenneth Cole, Eliot Spitzer, and Ronald Perelman explore the challenges of intermarriage.
Mike Wallace, Richard Dreyfuss, and Ruth Reichl express attitudes toward Israel that vary from unquestioning loyalty to complicated ambivalence.
William Kristol scoffs at the notion that Jewish values are incompatible with Conservative politics.
Alan Dershowitz, raised Orthodox, talks about why he gave up morning prayer.
Shawn Green describes the pressure that comes with being baseball’s Jewish star.
Natalie Portman questions the ostentatious bat mitzvahs of her hometown.
Tony Kushner explains how being Jewish prepared him for being gay.
Leon Wieseltier throws down the gauntlet to Jews who haven’t taken the trouble to study Judaism.
These are just a few key moments from many poignant, often surprising, conversations with public figures whom most of us thought we already knew.
“When my mother got her nose job, she wanted me to get one, too. She said I would be happier.”
—Dustin Hoffman
“It’s a heritage to be proud of. And then, too, it’s something that you can’t escape because the world won’t let you; so it’s a good thing you can be proud of it.”
—Ruth Bader Ginsburg
“My wife [Kate Capshaw] chose to do a full conversion before we were married in 1991, and she married me as a Jew. I think that, more than anything else, brought me back to Judaism.”—Steven Spielberg
“As someone who was born in Israel, you’re put in a position of defending Israel because you know how much is at stake.”—Natalie Portman
“Jewish introspection and Jewish humor is a way of surviving . . . if you’re not handsome and you’re not athletic and you’re not rich, there’s still one last hope with girls, which is being funny.”—Mike Nichols
“I felt not only this enormous pride at being a Jew; I felt this enormous void at not being a better Jew.”—Ronald O. Perelman
“American Jews, like Americans, have a very consumerist attitude toward their identity: they pick and choose the bits of this and that they like.”—Leon Wieseltier
“I thought if I had straight hair and a perfect nose, my whole career would be different.”—Sarah Jessica Parker
“I’ve always rebelled a little when people say, ‘My Jewish values lead me to really care about the poor.’ I know some Christians who care about the poor, too.”—William Kristol
“There were many times when I kept silent about being Jewish as I got older, when Jewish jokes were told.”—William Shatner
“‘Jew bastard’ was something I heard a lot.”—Leonard Nimoy.
“I always liked shiksas.”—Larry King
“It specifically says in the Torah that you can eat shrimp and bacon in a Chinese restaurant.”—Jason Alexander
“Yom Kippur is something I do alone, with nobody else, because I believe that my relationship with God is mine and mine only.”—Diane von Furstenberg
Customer Reviews:
Funny, wise, self-centered, painful --- and did I say funny?.......2007-09-13
Desmond Tutu can beg for peace all day, and he's lucky if he gets a squib in the press. Let George Clooney stand next to him, and the whole world perks up. And you can say all you like that American culture is shallow and that our cult of celebrity makes it impossible for serious ideas to get a hearing --- but even as you say it, surely you realize what a total bore you've become.
America is what it is. Celebrities rule.
So Abigail Pogrebin set out to interview Jews whose names you know to discuss their religious beliefs and practices. Very clever. A theologian talks, we snore. But 62 Jews from Hollywood (Dustin Hoffman, Steven Spielberg, Kyra Sedgwick), the Supreme Court (Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer), television (Sarah Jessica Parker, William Shatner), journalism (Mike Wallace), fashion (Diane Von Furstenberg, Kenneth Cole), and sports (Mark Spitz, Shawn Green)? Tell us more.
For those who know celebrities, the punch line should not be surprising: The famous are very much like regular people. That is, it's all about them. On other topics, like their religion, they're a lot of talk and not a lot of action --- there are a great many "cultural Jews" in the celebrity class and very few who can be found in shul with any regularity.
But there is, of course, one thing that celebrities do better than others. Talk. Smart celebs are fun to listen to, no matter the topic. They're provocative. Funny. Sometimes even wise. And because we feel we know them, we relate.
Some snippets from the book will tell you all you need:
Steven Spielberg: "I'd ask my dad, `Why can't we put lights up? We're the only house on the block that doesn't have lights.' And my dad would say, `We have a porch light.' I said, `Dad, you know what I mean.'"
Natalie Portman: "My dad always makes this stupid joke with my new boyfriend, who is not Jewish. He says, 'It's just a simple operation.' "
Mike Nichols: "I once said to Jerry Robbins, `I'm worried that all the great monsters of narcissism in show business are Jewish.' And I named some names. And there was a long silence, and he said, `Yes, well: Mickey Rooney.'"
Jason Alexander: "It specifically says in the Torah that you can eat shrimp and bacon in a Chinese restaurant."
Dustin Hoffman (on demanding a revision in the script of "Marathon Man"): "I won't play a Jew who cold-bloodedly kills another human being. I won't become a Nazi to kill a Nazi. I won't demean myself. I don't care what he did. Even though he tortured me, I won't do it.'
Joan Rivers: "The Jews take care of everything, and everyone hates the Jews. The blacks hate the Jews. You fools. Who marched with you? Not the WASPS. Trust me; not the WASPS."
Sarah Jessica Parker: "If I had straight hair and a perfect nose, my whole career would be different."
Nora Ephron: "I am probably the only young woman who worked in the Kennedy White House whom the president did not make a pass at. Perhaps it's because I'm Jewish. Don't laugh, think about it --- think about that long, long list of women JFK slept with. Were any Jewish? I don't think so."
It's not all amusing. There are overtly serious responses. And there is one that comes with fire and brimstone. It's from Leon Wieseltier, the literary editor of The New Republic. He walked away from Judaism; in his return, he's devout. And hypercritical of American Jews who aren't: "I can respect heresy, I can respect alienation, I can respect Karamazovian rebellion, even Oedipal rebellion. I don't mind renegades or apostates... My point is that American Jews aren't renegades; they are slackers."
All those voices --- funny, profane, holy --- resonate with Pogrebin. "Being Jewish is powerful and, in a sense, unavoidable --- whether one embraces it or leaves it on the shelf, whether one lives a visible life or an anonymous one," she concludes. "And that, in the process of writing this book, it's become more vital to me than I ever expected."
Indeed: At 40, Abigail Pogrebin was bat mitzvahed.
A real eye-opener.......2007-08-30
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Judaism in the "real world" as opposed to what Jews are "supposed" to do. The broad range of personalities the author interviews, including some who weren't on her list until someone else referred her to them, creates a broad cross section of perspectives to what it means to be Jewish. I would like to know how the author Abigail Pogrebin decided whom to interview. Why Sarah Jessica Parker and Kyra Sedgwick and not Billy Crystal or Mel Brooks? When I hear Jewish celebrity Mr. Brooks is probably the first person who comes to mind, followed closely by Crystal. The interview subjects who were half-Jewish and had no Jewish connection (there are a few) didn't really add much, but Kati Marton, ex-wife of Peter Jennings and current wife of Richard Holbrooke, who is also interviewed, brought a unique perspective. Since Jews arrived in America they have had disproportionate representation in show business and more recently the public sector. This book explores whether and how their Jewish background has influenced their life choices and relationships. Abigail Pogrebin is the daughter of Letty Cottin Pogrebin, alumna of my alma mater, Brandeis University, and founder of Ms. Magazine. Also the author of Deborah, Golda, and Me, which was wonderful. So I had to read this to see if the apple really doesn't fall far from the tree. (It doesn't). Highly recommended.
Oh Ye Of Little Faith.......2007-06-13
I found this book to be very disturbing. Most of the celebrities are totally secular, intermarried and in most ways confused and even uncomfortable about themselves as Jews. Most go to Seders. Many to synagogue for the high holy days and relate to the holocaust and support of Israel. However, they are largely unschooled in their religion and do not go out their way to encourage thir children to embrace Judaism. Its quite sad and a little bit scary if they are representative of the direction of American Judaism now and for the future.
I do recommend reading this book, but be prepared to be disappointed by the contributors lack of faith.
I WAS going to read it..........2006-12-27
...but then I saw Jay Leno interview Dustin Hoffman last week. Hoffman may have been "born Jewish" but all it did was sadden me to hear about his Christmas tree in his home while growing up and the Christmas gifts that are still shared in his home. All this interview did was sadden me and now I don't even want to know about the rest of these "Jewish" celebrities.
Prominent doesn't mean anything!.......2006-07-12
All those interviews proved is that the diversity among "prominent" Jews is the same as that among the general Jewish population. It may make observant Jews angry and non-observant Jews feel good but doesn't contribute to anyone else's well-being or beliefs in any shape or form. All one has to do is pick one interview and say that's why 1. Either I dont' still feel I'm a Jew or 2. I still feel I'm a Jew.
