4 out of 5 stars I DIDNT LOVE THIS BOOK BUT I LIKED IT.......2006-11-13

THIS IS A BOOK BY ROD HUNDLEY EX NBA PLAYER AND BROADCASTER. I FOUND HIS BOOK TO BE VERY INTERESTING AND ENTERTAINING. ROD WAS QUITE A CHARACTER AND A CROWD PLEASER. I REALLY ENJOYED HIS STORIES CONCERNING HIS EARLY LIFE AND CAREER WITH THE LAKERS. ROD THEN TURNED TO BROADCASTING WHEN HIS CAREER ENDED. I ALSO ENJOYED HIS MANY STORIES CONCERNING HIS BROADCASTING CAREER BUT GOT TIRED OF HEARING HOW GREAT JOHN STOCKTON AND KARL MALONE WERE. OVERALL THIS IS A VERY NICE READ FOR ALL LAKER, WEST VIRGINIA, JAZZ AND NBA FANS

5 out of 5 stars You Gotta Love It, Baby.......2000-02-01

This is a refreshing and amusing book about a man who has made the NBA a more entertaining place for the basketball fan. You do not have to be a Rod Hundley fan, a Utah Jazz fan, or even a basketball fan to enjoy his opinions and experiences. From his troubled childhood to his golden years, Hundley speaks his mind in a fresh and honest manner. The effort put in by McEachin to edit and organize 60 years of Hundley's stories and anecdotes is obvious, and the result is a thoroughly enjoyable book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book about Hundley's basketball experiences........1999-08-01

Hot Rod Hundley was the first player drafted in the 1957 NBA draft. He played six years for the Lakers in Minneapolis and Los Angeles. Following his playing career, Hot Rod has remained active is the sport. He is currently the play by play announcer for the Utah Jazz. Since 1957, he has seen or played with or against almost every great NBA player. In his book, which is basically his basketball autobiography, Hundley analyzes the game and its great and not so great players. Hot Rod Hundley was a showy basketball player; he was fancy and "cool" long before they became essentials in the professional game. His writing is much the same as his game was. His book is a good interesting read. His style is both conversational and informative. He gives his opinions freely and unhesitantly. He can be lavish with his praise and unsparing with his criticism. If you are a basketball fan or a Hot Rod Hundley fan, you will enjoy this book.

        Book Description

The Sexual Subject brings together writing on sexuality which has appeared in Screen over the past two decades. It reflects the journal's continuing engagement with questions of sexuality and signification in the cinema, an engagement which has had a profound influence on the development of academic study of film and on alternative film and video practice.

The collection opens with Laura Mulvey's classic "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" with its conjunction of semiotics and psychoanalysis, the critical approach which is most closely associated with Screen's rise to international prominence. The Reader then goes on to explore the particular questions and debates which that conjunction provoked: arguments around pornography and the representation of the body; questions of the representation of femininity and masculinity, of the female spectator, and of the social subject.

Many of the writings in The Sexual Subject have become indispensable texts within the study of film. The purpose of the collection is not only to make the articles available to a wider readership, and to a new generation, but also to pose new conjunctions, making connections between debates and inquiries which spanned two crucial decades of film theory.

The Sexual Subject is intended not only for all those with an interest in film and film theory, but for anyone with a commitment to cultural theory, theories of representation, and questions of sexuality and gender.

Contributors: Homi Bhabha, Edward Buscombe, Mary Ann Doane, Richard Dyer, John Ellis, Christine Gledhill, Stephen Heath, Claire Johnston, Annette Kuhn, Alan Lovell, Laura Mulvey, Steve Neale, Claire Pajaczowska, Griselda Pollock, Jackie Stacey, Leslie Stern, Paul Willemen, Christopher Williams, Dugald Williamson.

          Book Description

America is no longer a country but a multimillion-dollar brand, says Kalle Lasn and his fellow "culture jammers". The founder of Adbusters magazine, Lasn aims to stop the branding of America by changing the way information flows; the way institutions wield power; the way television stations are run; and the way the food, fashion, automobile, sports, music, and culture industries set agendas. With a courageous and compelling voice, Lasn deconstructs the advertising culture and our fixation on icons and brand names. And he shows how to organize resistance against the power trust that manages the brands by "uncooling" consumer items, by "dermarketing" fashions and celebrities, and by breaking the "media trance" of our TV-addicted age.

A powerful manifesto by a leading media activist, Culture Jam lays the foundations for the most significant social movement of the early twenty-first century -- a movement that can change the world and the way we think and live.

          Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The newest culture movement?.......2007-07-13

He sets the stage for culture jammers to take on the newest set of problems being discovered in our culture, Corporate rule, causing people to be addicted to tv, shopping, eating, and consumption in general.
Wanting us to be what feminism was in the 70s, and what environmentalism was in the 80s.

he tries to show how the culture jammers can fight their meme fight using the media, yet starts to fight the wrong people a few times, yet quickly gets back on track.

Maybe culture jamming with be the movement of the 10's, but right now its a fight few are participating in.

5 out of 5 stars Subversion at its best.......2007-07-11

This is an exceptional book. It is written by the founder of Adbusters. This is a book that challenged me to my core about my consumption habits. And in more specific the marketing that goes on to sell me things that I may or may not need. The book is sort of what you would imagine if an Old Testament prophet were to challenge the American Dream today. It's raw, honest, and thought provoking about how do we challenge and subvert the system without withdrawing from it. And what type of alternatives do we have besides living in a hole and pretending like nothing is happening. It's a bit of an older book (written in 2000) so some of the cultural references are obviously a bit out of date. But the content and ideas are really intriguing. The author shares a lot of stories about their battles and conversations with executives from all of the privately owned television stations and how they wouldn't take their money to run perfectly decent and normal ads. It shows how biased our entertainment industry is towards consumption and how embedded our entertainment is with commercialism. Just watch American Idol and you can see the gross product placement in that one show. This is the first book I bought all year (a fact to which I am proud since I bought close to 50 last year) because they didn't have it at any of my local libraries. So I bought it used on Amazon and gave it away to a friend, who will hopefully pass it on to someone else.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and different.......2005-10-25

This book is excellent for studying culture. The author is interesting and relates to the reader easily. The topics vary and bring many different ideas to the plate for anyone interested in culture. I would suggest that this would be interesting for a teenager to an adult to read. It will change your perception of culture.

          2 out of 5 stars Yes-No-Maybe-I don't know-Can you repeat the question?.......2005-10-20

I bought this book thinking it was going to briefly spell out what I already know--that our advertising-soaked world is toxic--and then get to the heart of the matter: what I personally could do to make my own life saner. It did not do that. It was mostly a diatribe against "the way the world is today" and how "things were better in the old days."

Well, hold the phone, because (a)Things aren't 100% hellish now and (b)The world is no worse than it ever was, it's just crummy in a different way. This is one great argument that IT IS IMPERATIVE TO KNOW YOUR HISTORY! So here goes:

Life up till the 1950s was not all one big back-to-nature love-in. Most people have been unable to build a fire without using matches since at least the Industrial Revolution. Nobody but an idiot would have drunk from a stream in the Middle Ages; the water was polluted (albeit with feces rather than mercury), and that's why they all guzzled ale instead. Life on the land basically meant you were one crop away from starvation and you worked yourself pretty much to death just to get by. And if you want to talk about long hours and fast paces, how about 7-year-olds toiling in textile factories and mines for 12 to 15 hours a day--less than a century ago?

Yes, we are inundated with advertising to a ridiculous degree. And yes, it breeds cynicism. And yes, the levels of noise and chatter have become deafening. These are Bad Things. But the book really doesn't give any positive steps for turning these things down in your own life...and I thought that was the point? I can bemoan the state of the world quite well on my own; what I want is some ideas other people have tried that worked. Like another reviewer, I'm hoping for a sequel that would deal with these things--plus not leave me so depressed I want to stick my head in the oven. Maybe it could be titled: *Okay, the Sky's Not Falling, Let's Lighten Up*?

5 out of 5 stars It is the points being made that matter.......2005-07-16

This book is a little all over the place, but its basic premises and ideas are what matters. I won't go into any details - read the book for those. Just let me say if everyone read this book (with an open mind), then maybe we would all realize that huge corporations are having a very negative impact on the quality of all of our lives and it is time to do something about it. This book should be mandatory reading for all high school students. Read this book and try to get your friends to read it. It is time to wake up and take your life back.

52 Fun Things to Do on the Plane is from a card deck series designed to inspire creativity and offer an alternative to the idiot box (see 52 Great Books to Read and 52 Special Traditions for Family and Friends). This particular deck, small enough to tuck into a purse or backpack, is aimed at families on the go, and includes games and activities for kids of all ages. Each card shows an illustration together with the name of an activity; the flip side has instructions. For example, one card suggests starting a round-robin story about a trip: "With another person, start telling a story about taking a trip. After a little while, let the other person continue the story and then a little later, you can continue again." The suggestions are perfect for situations in which movement is limited and you have time to wile away.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of good advice!.......2002-11-17

These cards are filled with good ideas and reminders of what it takes to find the right person. It's easy to get into a rut but these cards have ideas on how to get out of the house more and hopefully put yourself in a situation where you'll meet someone. These cards are well worth the money to give yourself a boost especially if you've been out of the dating scene for awhile.

              1 out of 5 stars A *COMPLETE* waste of money ... What a ripoff!.......2001-06-05

This was the worst waste of money I ever spent. All of the short, simple "tips" are self-explanatory; I can't even imagine anyone over the age of 9 not already knowing them. Unless you spend most of your spare time mugging people, I can't imagine that it would add anything to your life. I would very strongly suggest that you save your money and skip this one. YUCK!

4 out of 5 stars Great informational book.......2001-04-18

It appears this another great card series which was just published. I'm glad I got mine right away. I wish it were in the form of a book instead of cards, but nevertheless, the cards are great. They illustrated, well written and easy to follow. They offers many tips on how to pamper yourself in ways I never even dreamed about. The best part is that they're all affordable. It covers everything from spoiling yourself with foods, applying home remedies to your body for sofe and silky skin and hair, to steam baths and pedicures. There's lots more. I thought the little cards were great. You don't need to be rich, famous, or spoiled to treat yourself to a little (or a lot) of pampering. These cards prove that.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie suggestions for the romantic!.......2001-02-24

These cards are great romantic movie suggestions, perfect for a date with your sweetheart. I was expecting to see mainly classic old films and was pleasantly surprised by the wide array and selection. There's something for everyone here!

              Book Description

This new edition of a business textbook bestseller has been completely updated to reflect the numerous global changes that have occurred since 1999: globalization, SARS, AIDS, the handover of Hong Kong, and so forth. In particular, the book presents a fuller discussion of global business today. Also, issues of terrorism and state security as they affect culture and business are discussed substantially. The structure and content of the book remains the same, with thorough updating of the plentiful region and country descriptions, demographic data, graphs and maps. This book differs from textbooks on International Management because it zeroes in on culture as the crucial dimension and educates students about the cultures around the world so they will be better prepared to work successfully for a multinational corporation or in a global context.

              * The original, best-selling guide to developing cross-cultural skills to succeed in the global economy
              * More than 200,000 copies in print, adopted by more than 200 universities worldwide
              * This classic has been praised as a 'bible of multiculturalism' (New York Times News Service)

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book on the Most-Overlooked Facet of Business Today: Cultural Differences.......2006-04-03

As a cross-cultural consultant and graduate business professor, I highly recommend the sixth edition of the MCD book by Harris, Moran, and Moran. I currently utilize the new edition in both my online and onground MBA courses which deal primarily with international management and leadership issues.

The authors had cohesively distilled the topics of business, culture, and management into a readable and usable text that is easily interpreted by students, undergraduates included.

I have followed the authors' work on this series for the past 10 years and have seen nothing but the most relevant information being added to the subsequent editions.

As a consultant and an educator, I recommend the sixth edition of the MCD books without reservation. They are essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the integral effects on culture in this era of globalization.

4 out of 5 stars Great Reference book for Cross-cultural Affairs.......2006-04-03

The book "Managging Cultural Differences" is a very good reference book for cross-cultural affairs. First of all, the book creates awareness about culture and subsequent cultural differences in an increasingly global world. It also offers the reader an introduction to the concepts of culture and beliefs and most importantly gives a guide on how to behave in foreign countries.

"Managing Cultural Differences" has helped me many times in business, for travels as well as my private life. I use my copy as a reference book.

The best benefit of the book is probably not only the cross-cultural guide but also the explanation of abstract concepts, their theoretical backgrounds and the practical implications thereof. The book also gives suggestions for further readings.

This is a good introduction in diversity relating to the global market. It is an easy to medium reading book with many perspectives.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Value for Students.......2004-07-27

Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the first edition of this work, the authors proffer an expanded version of a text that has come to be regarded as a classic reference work by students everywhere. Their message is still the same, the understanding of our differences, the celebration of diversity, and the creation of partnerships of long-term benefit.

While many of the chapter headings are still the same or similar, considerable content has been added and the emphasis in the first half of the book is on providing information to enhance the building of global leadership strategies. We see the reemphasis on the development of cross-cultural communication skills and their presentation of both the positive techniques and the pitfalls to avoid.

Much of the thrust of the first half of the book is on cultural synergy which they view as representing a dynamic process that involves adapting and learning, and which involves joint action in which the total effect is greater than the sum of effects when acting independently. Synergy to them creates an integrated solution that does not signify compromise because nothing is given up or lost and it develops the potential members by facilitating the release of team energies..

The remainder of the first half of this text looks at managing transitions and relocations, an all too short chapter on managing diversity in the global workforce, women in global business, and effective performance in the global marketplace.

This latter chapter on effective performance in the global marketplace addresses issues of global leaders and strategic alliances, the psychological dimensions involved in intercultural contracting, the development of human resources, the essential factors of global performance, integrity in business organizations, ethical relativism, cultural changes that are occurring in many countries, and the management of technology transfer.

What puzzled me is that in the entire first section there is only one quotation from Fons Trompenaars and his name never even made it to the index. There are four plus pages on Hofstede's early work and his name can be found in the index.
That aside, for a book that is focusing on global leadership strategies for the 21st century to omit any mention or analysis of Trompenaars seven dimensions and the ground breaking work that he has done seems, to put it mildly, somewhat strange. There would seem to be a need for today's readers to go beyond Hofstede and to transition into the data base and findings of Trompenaars research and its application for effective global strategies.

Further to this, in their discussion of cultural synergy, there is no mention of the Trompenaars/Hampden-Turner concept of reconciliation. To achieve the true culturally integrated solution that the authors are promulgating would seem to require a reconciliation approach such as can be found in Trompenaars/Hampden-Turner's writings.

The second half of Managing Cultural Differences provides data on regional cultural specifics and addresses doing business with North Americans, Latin Americans, Asians and Australians, Europeans, Middle Easterners, and Africans. In these sections, not all countries are considered but for those that are included there is a rich data base and keen insights of considerable benefit.

Overall, this is a good book and judging by previous editions, is one that will be of great value to students keen on understanding the world around them.

Here are some of the MOST OBJECTIONABLE texts in this book on India -

India: Geography, Government, and People (adapted with permission from Venturing Abroad in Asia by Robert T. Moran International Management)

              Page 444 - 8th paragraph

"There is not enough work for all their people, so poverty is prevalent. With an adult population of 326 million and official unemployment rate of 15 million, the last thing India needs is labor-saving modern equipment. Over the years, India has implemented intensive population control programs but none were successful. The high birth rate has been attributed to early marriage, the emphasis on bearing sons by the Hindu religion, the security of having children to take care of parents in old age, and the low level of education achieved by the rural masses.

Climate and culture contribute to the high incidence of disease and influence the patterns of work. The hot weather season brings constant dust, which results in various infections~ and eye irritations and also limits the outdoor physical activity. The cold, damp rainy season brings on colds, malaria and rheumatism. Their practice of vegetarianism contributes to malnutrition and protein deficiencies. The people of India have a general syndrome known as "weakness" brought on by their constant exposure to epidemic diseases such as cholera and typhus, and the malnutrition factor.

CORRECTION: This are very UNHEALTHY comments and illustrate pure ARROGANCE and IGNORANCE on the authors' part. They have NO MORAL right to blame India's culture and climate for its problems. Like everywhere else, people get used and adapted to the climate. And if they endure more, they should be stronger as they tend to develop immunity! Now, it has been proved that Vegetarian diet is as healthy (if not, more) as meat. "Astrologers play an important role in India, as the people believe that nothing is accidental and the universe and all living components have a fundamental order."

              Page 446 - 3rd - 4th paragraph

"It can be said that traditional Hindus are a nation of water drinkers"
"Western food is available in all the good hotels."

CORRECTION: Except health harming drinks, Hindus drink every good drink. Again, PURE ARROGANCE and IGNORANCE - good hotel does not mean Western food!!-
