Back by popular demand! The exciting, colorful and tragic biography of Canadian F1 racer Gilles Villeneuve. "Never has a champion been profiled in such a masterly way... A must for all who follow F1." Pino Allievi, La Gazzetta Dello Sport.
Customer Reviews:
What else can I say?.......2005-11-20
The sad fact is that, despite the popularity of F1 now, nobody since has demonstrated Gilles' control.
This book is a good representation of him- it doesn't fawn on him, he's not without his flaws and I think it does a pretty balanced job of showing all sides of the man. If you're into Villeneuve's style, and want to know more about him, you will not do better.
In Montréal on GP weekend, they've a display of Gilles' suit on Crescent Street. The guy looks all of 5 feet all...a tiny giant among drivers...
Vroooom.......2005-08-12
Very well written story on the life of Gilles and full of tons of facts on his races and the way he lived his life . I still can't believe he lived that long while reading this book . Check out Curtis Turners book " Full Throttle " for a perfectly written story that's imposible to put down , with an emotional endind on probably the first " Intimidator " . You won't be disappointed .
best book I have ever read.......2005-03-29
This book is impossible to put down, if you are or are not a
Gilles fan this is a must. The book is very well written with
tons of insite to his years of racing as well as lots of
liitle known information about him and his family. I found myself
making time to get a few more pages in before I would have to
put it down. I was at six of the races mentioned in the book,
Watkins Glen and Canada, not only did it bring back great
memories, but I learned more about those races than I knew then
when I was there live. Buy it and god bless Gilles
The best racing book ever written?.......2003-05-15
I've read a lot of racing books, but never one better than this. It is at the same time gripping, compelling and very well written.
Donaldson's masterpiece is recommend without hesitation.
Let me be clear..........2002-01-24
Let me be clear: this is simply the best racing driver biography ever written. It's complete, well written, touching and objective at the same time, respectful to the dead. It's an amazing book. No doubt the writer is a big Villeneuve fan, but he managed to avoid being totally partial.
It's full oof data, anecdotes, funny parts, tragic parts, competition, brief technical analysys of the cars, a lot of famous drivers in diverse categories... Well, this is the book.

The strip contained some of the most original "characters".......2005-03-29
Dick Tracy was "born" in 1931 and while his appearance has not changed much over the years, what he uses in his job has. For a period in the sixties, the strip was as much science fiction as it was about law enforcement. The Diet Smith company invented many devices, the most widely used was the two-way wrist radio followed by the two-way wrist television/camera. This is one device that has essentially been invented. The latest cell phones have that capability, the only difference is that they are worn on a belt clip rather than on the wrist.
However, some of the other science fiction aspects, such as an alien civilization on the moon and the character Moon Maid were too far out. Once Chester Gould, the creator of Dick Tracy, retired, these aspects of the strip were quietly phased out. This book is a recapitulation of the strip and most of the main characters that appeared in it. Being Dick Tracy, the emphasis is on law and order and how the law "restricts" the police when carrying out their duties. However, with the exception of the main law enforcement people, the Tracy strip contained some of the most colorful characters ever to appear in comic strips. Even the "good guys", such as B. O. Plenty, Diet Smith and Vitamin Flintheart are original.
Gould also occasionally used cheesecake and sex in the strip. On page 204 there is a strip where policewoman Lizz and policeman Groovy Grove are drinking coffee and talking at the station. Lizz is wearing a very short skirt and her body language is strongly coming on to Groovy. If Groovy had had the sense to turn around and pay attention to her, the color of her underwear would no longer have been an unknown.
When I was young, I always read the comics in the order from what I liked least to my favorites. This meant that I was constantly flipping the pages, but that was part of the fun. Dick Tracy was read second to last, right before "Mandrake the Magician." Therefore, I really enjoyed the many pages of excerpts from the strip included in this book.
A great survey of one of the great comic strips.......1999-06-01
This book is superb way of learning about one of the best, and easily the most violent, adventure strips ever made. This book highlights the complete history of the strip with its major stories, characters and the context in which the stories were told.
Best of all, although the author admires the strip, he is still honest enough to show the strip's decline as the creator, Chester Gould's artistic instincts abruptly abandoned him in the 1960's. To that end, the author does talk about Gould's stupid moon period and his ossified "damn the rights of the accused" stance that turned the strip into predominately rightwing ranting forum.
All in all, an excellent book.
Book Description
How can Buffy’s religious symbolism be squared with creator Joss Whedon’s professed atheism? Is Buffy truly a Kierkegaardian knight of faith? Do Faith’s corruption and return to the good life demonstrate Platonic eudaimonism? Or do they illustrate the flaws in Nietzsche’s superman concept? What does the show’s treatment of vampires, demons, and other entities say about ethical attitudes toward nonhumans? These are some of the questions asked and answered in this lively collection of essays that link classical philosophy to the long-running series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Buffy’s status as the leading vehicle for exploring the evil underlying everyday life has made it ripe for the kind of witty, penetrating philosophical analysis this book delivers -- fully disintering the intellectual issues that underlie this cult favorite.
Customer Reviews:
Not too bad - If you're a fan and even a little bit interested in Philosophy and Ethics it's worth reading. .......2007-03-31
I found this book helpful in doing an Ethics class. Some of the chapters helped me understand what my text book couldn't -- the situations were all familiar and I love Buffy.
The reason I gave it 3-4 stars is because the writing is not consistently great, but it was interesting reading.
Thoughtful and accessible........2006-02-24
I picked up this book for a friend who is a Buffy fanatic, and read it myself, converting me into a fanatic, as well. Taking the seminal television series, and applying some of the classic philosophers' take on the world -- Aristotle, Plato, Kant, Nietzsche (though, the author UTTERLY distorts and misapprehends Nietzsche's philosophy), Hume -- this collection of essays demonstrates just how many layers upon which Buffy the Vampire Slayer was constructed. It also provides a decent primer for the works of some of Western thoughts' most notable philosophers (but see my caveat re Nietzsche), bringing to life the abstract concepts in the guise of a very entertaining television series. Add to that, clever writing by a group of essayists who obviously love the show, and it is a very amusing and informative read, and, arguably, one of the best to take on the series.

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE AND PHILOSOPHY: FEAR AND TREMBLING IN SUNNYDALE
James B. South, editor (2003)
RATING: 3/5 Stakes
BACK-OF-THE-BOOK SUMMARY: "So, if you're kind of killing time between apocalypses or just wondering about that meaning of life thing, here's some readage . . . Look, these guys'll I-think-therefore-I-am you into the freakin' ground. And the happy is better than shoe shopping. What? If I don't consult the oracle I'll, like, turn to stone? Well, yeah, if not already."
REVIEW
Buffy's entry into Open Court's "Popular Culture and Philosophy" line takes the form of a collection of short essays written by junior academics in fields such as women's studies, philosophy, and sociology. The essays are roughly grouped by subject: feminism, knowledge/science, ethics, religion/politics, and miscellaneous. Each is written with reference to the first six seasons of Buffy, with Season Seven unfortunately taking place after final deadlines for the writers.
Most of the essays are accessible, though they tend to expect the reader to have a basic understanding of long-standing philosophical concepts such as the difference between utilitarian and deontological theories of justice. On the whole, I find the essays largely mundane and forgettable, obviously written by huge fans of the show using Buffy to embody a particular academic issue they're currently working on.
However, there are a couple of stand-out articles, such as Neal King's "Brownskirts: Facisim, Christianity, and the Eternal Demon" and Michael P. Levine and Steven Jay Schneider's "Feel for Buffy: The Girl Next Door." The first is a fascinating essay on Buffy as a fascist hero, while the second doesn't fall into the hagiography trap and is willing to both criticize the show and the cult of frequently simple-minded scholarship that has grown up around it.
I don't think Buffy and Philosophy will prove particularly interesting to the average fan of the show (whether or not philosophically inclined), and is probably best browsed before purchase.
So much fun!!.......2004-05-14
This book is amazing and covers a wide range of topics. It's highly academic and well-respected in the academic community. It was a good lead in as far as asking my professors if I could incorporate Buffy into my papers. Hehe. I found that it also made some things much clearer, by putting it in the light of my favorite television show. I particularly liked the comparison of Faith to Nietzsche and the incorporation of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason and relating that to "Out of Mind, Out of Sight." It brought Kant's view into a new perspective, rather than trying to understand specifically with Kant's text and just accepting what he said as his view, it made his view make sense. I really do recommend it for any fan of Buffy in general(although it may seem tough at first, it was for me) or a philosophy fan. (I also found that it heavily related to my Conscience and Literature class)
Teachers should recommend this book for class.......2004-01-28
I took Philosphy in my first semmester of college, and I didn't do to well. After I started reading this book, I began to understand Plato, Kant, and other philospohers better. If my teacher had recommended this book I may have gotten higher than a C.
This book takes themes from the show: Faith's downfall, feminisim, education, violence, etc. and explains the themes through philosphy. I love BTVS and this book gave me a different way to watch the show. I definately recommend this book to anyone who is currently taking philosphy or will take a class or has. It helps the reader get through a subject that may not be very clear on its own.
Customer Reviews:
This has to be one of the most careless adaptions, EVER........2007-08-03
Before this book there were multiple versions of the Stormbringer (BRP) system, changed somewhat and renamed 'Elric!' and then changed back to Stormbringer again.
This book is nothing but a cut & paste job by a company obviously not at all interested or informed on making a d20 product.
There's two types of customers who may look at this product:
If you really are into Elric and want a faithful adaption, avoid this product. (Except maybe at the $4.99 level.)
If you know nothing about Elric and just want some wild ideas that are interesting (but ultimately busted), this product might prove a measure of worth.
I am the former, and my rating reflects this.
I guess the best way to describe just how careless the conversion was is to show some "stats" on a few saga personalities:
Dyvim Slorm (Level 8 Aristocrat/Level 7 Wizard)
(Um... didn't Slorm ride a dragon at the end and do pretty well with Mournblade? And when did he use magic?!? Didn't Melnibone fall when he was fairly young?)
Magum Colim (Level 4 Expert (Sailor)/Level 6 Fighter/Level 6 Wizard)
(What's up with another arbitrary wizard?)
And the tin foil hat award goes to...
Dyvim Tvar (Level 7 Fighter/Level 7 Wizard)
(So his son is an Aristocrat and he is not?!? And yet ANOTHER wizard. Grrr... anyone who has forgotten about Tvar's reaction to sorcery might want to read a few pages into "The Ship Which Sails Over Land and Sea" from "Elric of Melnibone" again. The terrible drawing of him and the gaggleload of "demon items" [he, and almost everyone has] only adds to all this.)
These are just the very basics. Seriously, do a google search outside of Amazon and you'll see what I mean.
Mediocre and rushed adaptation..........2002-01-18
I was very disappointed when this product came out.
Potentially it could have been the highlight of the early d20 system's open license, but the producers did a very 2nd rate job of putting together the materials.
The presentation was no better then a novice could've accomplished on a home pc. The artwork was old, the organisation was not updated at all for the new book and directly borrowed from prior products.
This setting is just waiting for someone who really cares to adapt it in a good light instead of rushing to make a quick buck.
I expected more from such a fine company as Chaosium.
A complete role gaming adventure.......2001-06-09
Based upon the popular Michael Moorcock fantasy novels, Dragon Lords Of Melnibone offers the players a complete role gaming adventure in a dark world where the forces of law and chaos clash. Players are provided with a complete description of this mystical world of Young Kingdoms and such strange races as Melniboneans and the Myyrrhn; magic and religion; demons, monsters, folk and heroes; and a gaming system that is riveting from first to last. Of particular value is The Dungeon Masters Companion section including reference guides for campaigns, mass combats, effects of chaos, scenarios, allegiances, three forces, enchantments, rumors, a character sheet template, and user friendly index. Wonderfully illustrated throughout, Dragon Lords Of Melnibone is a very highly recommended addition to any dedicated role gamer's reference and player collection.
I can only hope this is the beginning.......2001-04-27
For those that are NOT familiar with the idea, WOTC has offered an 'Open Game License' to any publisher that would like to contribute to the further growth of the d20 system that has been implemented with D&D3Ed.
Chaosium, the fine purveyors of Call of Cthulhu (for many many years) and the oft relaunched RPG versions of the Elric of Melnibone have thrown their hat in the d20 ring with this first offering.
DLoM is Elric d20... it's that simple. And the folks at Chaosium have not let us down. The package is tight, conscice and filled to the brim with vital info for running a d20 Young Kingdoms campaign.
All the main players atre faithfully presented, details for adapting Melnibonean and Pan-Tangean magic to the d20 formula and the surprising detail of summonings and pacts that were so vital to the Elric storyline all contibute to an amazing package.
If you love Elric, then this is the game for you... now... when do we get Hawkmoon and Corum?
Wow d20 Elric!.......2001-03-29
To be totally honest I have been waiting for this book for the last couple of months. Elric in the Dungeons and Dragons world brings back memories of playing as a kid with Deities & Demigods ( a book that I treasure to this day). Dragon Lords makes the Deit & Demi material look like a pamphlet. So much powerful source material. Stats for the dragons of Melnibone', Elric, & Stormbringer. New skills (conceal object), feats, (close-order fighting), races (full and half Melnibonean) and even new spells and weapons. The new alignment system seems very workable.
As with any new material, only thorough reading and hours of playing will show which aspects of the book will be inserted into your D&D world. This book is a great start to what will hopefully be a long line of d20 Melnibonean products.
Buy the book, then go reread Sailor on the Sea of Fate to get you ready for the world of Law and Chaos.

Customer Reviews:
Not as useful as I had hoped........2007-01-16
Last year I had to set up some rather complex estate planning with an attorney who specializes in this field. To try to understand what the attorney was proposing, it seemed reasonable to learn as much as possible, starting from a rather low knowledge base. This book was fair, but another book, in my opinion, presented the topics more clearly.(Plan Your Estate, by Denis Clifford and Cora Jordan) I read and reread Plan Your Estate (empasizing those areas that were pertinent to my needs). It is said that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, but that little knowledge helped me interact with the attorney more readily, and saved time and money.
