Balanced, Kind, and Informative.......2003-11-26
This short book is a must-read for anyone seeking to explore the idea of pacifism, as it stems from early church theology. The books gives an overview of early Christian thinkers and how the idea of service in the military was seen as inappropriate for Christians--both because of the issue of idolatry (state worship) and because of the teachings of Christ. It also summarizes how that foundational church thinking changed when the Roman Emporer became a "Christian" and Christians began thinking that the Emporer's conquests were an extension of God's will. Some very interesting parallels for today--many modern Christians equate the actions of the government with God's actions. A highly recommended title that was eye-opening to me.

Marlin book fairly comprehensive, very informative.......2002-12-12
As a biography, this is a well-written piece that covers Sterling's life and career from a pro-Sterling perspective. Larry Woody obviously has an affinity for Sterling and his family, which shines through. Providing a bold overview of his career, Woody shows Marlin as the tough, dedicated racer he is and the strong family man that he is, too!
I'd have liked to have read a bit more detail on Sterling's early career...Woody seems to sweep over the late 70's and early 80's in just a few short pages. Sterling's years at Morgan-McClure and Ganassi are given the most prominence. On the positive note, the book covers all the way through Sterling's injury at Kansas...you can't get much more up-to-date.
From a design/image perspective, the book is hit-and-miss. It features some awesome early photos of Sterling, both on and away from the track. Plenty of pics of him with the family and from his teen years, which are stellar.
The on-track shots leave a lot to be desired. Whoever designed the book did not get very high-res photos from the races, so many images of Sterling's rides are blurry, out-of-focus, or just plain awful. Plus, the book doesn't show images of his Sadler Racing or Stavola Bros. cars and barely any of the Sabco years images. The cover design could've been a bit more dynamic, too.
I haven't checked out the CD-ROM that's included yet. It's supposed to contain original music, screensavers, images, and stats.
This book is pretty essential for Sterling fans. We're not likely to get a tell-all like Junior's "Driver 8" or Tony Stewart's "True Speed" any time soon, so this is as comprehensive a book about Sterling Marlin as you could ask for.

Great resource for sci-fi lovers.......2007-02-19
This book is an indispensable companion for huge fans of the ALIEN series, especially those who, like me, think that ALIENS is the pinnacle of the franchise. But even if you're just a casual fan of the series but a major lover of science fiction, this is a great book to have.
The most amazing part of the book is the long essay on combat between capital ships in space. The essay is a very hard-science fiction oriented piece that addresses a lot of the issues with ship to ship combat that are taken for granted in works like Star Trek and Star Wars. It addresses issues like combat between two ships in orbit around a planet, cloaking against a starfield, space mine arrays, directed energy weapons, railguns, and the use of decoys in space combat.
The rest of the book is equally believable in its portrayal of futuristic warfare, and it does an excellent job of giving background information on the world of ALIEN without holding the reader's hand or revealing everything. The pictures, drawings, and schematics are nothing short of amazing.
The Difinitive Guide to Aliens and Alien.......2005-08-15
Not much more I can add that others haven't other than to push the point home. This book is a technical sci-fi fan's dream come true. The level of detail and realism put into this book rivals that of the Star Trek technical books, and even surpasses them on some levels. This book is painstakingly researched and is an official and authorized explanation of the weapons, ships, tech and much more are covered in this book.
Just about everything you could want to know about the technical aspects of the Alien and Aliens universe are here. You can know exactly how a pulse rifle or a power loader works. You can see the inner workings of a dropship. You can see the full capabilities of the Sulaco. You name it, and it's there. You even get entries for military equipment that was not in the movie, but still part of the Alien universe.
Did I mention Alien? Yeah you get a ton of information on the Nostromo as well as details on the escape shuttle and equipment they used. You also get extensive details on androids as well (from both movies). They even go so far as to explain how faster than light travel works. Not only do you get all this, but you get some awesome information regarding the alien itself.
The book itself is very well made considering it's labelled as a paperback. The cover is a thicker card stock and glossy on the front while the pages are made from a quality paper as well. The book quality is like what you would find on the Star Wars technical books or better. Definitely bigger than those books.
I wish all sci-fi technical books would go into this much detail with their subject matter. This book is pretty much the standard I look for in other technical manuals. If you ever get a chance to find this one and are either a big Alien fan or just a big fan on these types of books I recommend getting it. For some of you even with the high prices (I think the original list price was around $20) you see in auctions and here you might still find this book worth it.
Interesting book with neat gadgets.......2003-08-04
The book delivered exactly what it was supposed to. The equipment described were mostly from the second movie, which was expected since the colonial marines only made an appearance in that one. I was expecting a few more vehicles and weapons that were not shown in the movie. The arsenal of the marines appeared to be very limited. Whatever the case, this is a good book for fans of the movies and sci-fi fans who like big weapons. The section on the aliens themselves was kind of brief, being mostly accounts from Ripley.
Try just reading the quotes.......2003-03-27
I loved the quotes between the sections. The ones where other Marines are "telling what they heard". You get bits and pieces and everything gets exaggerated and blamed on the Company. It's funny "because we know better." And the descriptions of the APC and dropship are great. Too bad we don't get to see them more in the movie.

this book provides a great deal of information on the Colonial Marines from "Aliens". all of you potential Aliens video game modders out there must get this book. it has served as an excellent reference book for all my "Aliens versus Predator" modifications. with several illustrations, it also provides the artist with valuable "Aliens" info. even the curious Sci-Fi geek will find this book thoroughly interesting.

A sourcebook done right........2007-06-06
The Seattle Sourcebook is perhaps the single best example of a setting book in RPG history. Rather than trying to force plots and unneeded NPC, all you get is a hard look at Seattle in 2050. Neighborhoods, businesses mundane and shadowy, local landmarks, weather, politics... everything needed to set any kind of adventure in the city.
The book is only approved by the Wiki-like commentary added by "users" of this book. Some of the commentary is humorous, some can be adventure hooks, and some of course are blatant lies. But the method of presentation makes them flow naturally into the rhythm of the writing.
Physically, the book lives up to FASA's high standards. Print is well laid out and easy to read. The artwork is standard for Shadowrun and of varying quality. The book is well organized. It is a pleasure to simply read.
Seattle.......2000-06-14
For anyone wanting to run a serious game in the Shadowrun world, this is a must. Not because it's seattle, but because it contains great detailed information about the shadowrun community. And it also has some great maps for locations. Makes it real easy on gamemasters.

A Better Seattle Sourcebook.......2003-10-26
New Seattle is pretty much a total remake of the previous Seattle Sourcebook that served for 1st and 2nd edition Shadowrun. While Seattle was always a useful sourcebook and possibly the most important sourcebook other than the rulebook this volume does a good job of updating and consolidating the metroplex. It's somewhat quicker and easier to read than the original and gives a few more adventure ideas than the old Seattle book.
It follows the trend of 3rd edition books to have less artwork but it does have one author which helps lend consistency to the book. While the background history of the sprawl in New Seattle may not be current anymore it's a hell of a better than using an old 1st edition book. The backstory has been updated for the corp war and the mob war and the death of Dunkelzhan.
You should probably pick this up if you're starting a new group. There's enough floating around that you can probably find it used for less than the cover price. Fanpro may reprint it later, I'm not sure.

An Excellent Book For Those Looking For It........2007-01-24
Starting Your Career as a Freelance Writer will not teach you how to write. You need to do that yourself, with practice and feedback from people around you.
What this book will do is take you step by step through the trials of becoming a paid writer: everything from coming up with ideas to write about to structuring to the finished product, from querying editors for the first time to building a lasting relationship. The "rules" set down apply to multiple forms of writing, and not just for magazines, and references to other work are instructional and welcome.
There is also an excellent overview of how to manage your personal business as a freelancer, which for those of us "creative types," is certainly helpful.
The greatest part of this book, though, is its ability to lead the reader into types of writing for pay that many of us would never even consider. For instance, there is a chapter (written by a different author, suggesting the book's author knows her limits) on writing copy. Though I would never have thought to write copy, and almost skipped the chapter, following reading it and having been convinced that maybe this was a good way to suppliment income, I made some cold-calls as the book suggested, and a few days later, I already have a copy writing gig.
I would highly recommend this book to any competent writer that is looking to make a bit of money doing something that they love. If you can bring the work ethic, this book can bring the game plan.
A Great Way to Get Started.......2006-09-07
This book contains all of the essential information I needed to jump start my career as a freelance writer. Having some experience in the field in the distant past, I needed a refresher course and this book provided it. (It would be even more useful for someone without previous experience in the field.) Besides providing proper form for query letters and instruction on how to go about finding and approaching markets, it gives specific guidelines on the right way to pursue a freelance writing career, reasonable expectations and how to organize your work as a business.
If You Want to Be A Free Lance Writer-This Is A Must Book.......2004-04-11
I remember very vividly when I sold my first article to a major Canadian newspaper. It was in the mid 1960s, when I had just graduated from law school and I decided that the only way to fame, and perhaps jump- start my non-existent law practice, was to write articles on Quebec Civil Law. Fortunately for me, I was in the right place at the right time, and the newspaper was looking for someone to contribute articles pertaining to this subject matter. They purchased the first several of my articles, and boy was I excited!
However, unfortunately, my free-lance writing days came to an abrupt end when no one else was interested in the topic. That is when I decided to devote all of my time and energies into practicing the legal profession. Perhaps, if I had at my disposal Moira Anderson Allen's book entitled Starting Your Career As A Freelance Writer, things would have been different. Remember, it was the 1960s, and at the time there were few writing guides pointing you in the right direction to a free -lance writing career.
I did not have Allen to show me how to start my articles, find the right markets, queries and submissions, rights and contracts, and how to expand my horizons.
It is these topics and many more where Starting Your Career As A Freelance Writer excels. The book is a splendid, in-depth analysis where even the more experienced writer can reap some benefits.
Divided into six parts, there is no shortage of vital and interesting information as to what goes on in the minds of an editor to how to interview, and from exploring and evaluating markets to writing for special interest publications and markets. The reader is also exposed to such topics as queries and submissions, legal technicalities pertaining to rights and contracts, as well as setting fees and keeping records. After all, without these essential tools, we will never get to first base with our budding writing career, no matter how talented we may be.
What is noteworthy about Allen's writing is her ability to cut away the fat from the meat. Furthermore, she never presumes that the reader should know certain fundamental concepts, and consequently Allen leaves nothing unturned.
Allen's writing credentials are impeccable, as proven by the hundreds of articles she has contributed to several publications over her twenty- year writing career. In addition, she has also being called upon to speak at writers' conferences and workshops, and to act as an instructor at many of these events. Commencing a career, as a free-lance writer, is a difficult task, and one in which a great deal of perseverance and patience is required. It is Allen's vast experience and her ability to effectively convey her knowledge from these experiences that is very much in evidence throughout book, and will surely prove to be invaluable to aspiring free- lance writers.

I am a fan of Moira Allen's incredibly resourceful website WRITING-WORLD (www.writing-world.com) and looked forward to reading her all-in-one guide on freelancing writing. As I expected, NO disappointments here - all you ever wanted to know about the basics of writing for magazines and going freelance is explained simply and expertly in this book.
I normally don't take more than 3 days to read a non-fiction book, but Moira Allen's took me over a week! You can have an idea just how comprehensive and thorough the contents must be. Fromtime management to setting goals, from finding ideas to handling accounts, Moira helps you to become a successful freelance writer, with her words of wisdom (born out of a 20+ year-old writing career) and conversational-yet-pithy 'tone'.
On the craft of writing, Moira teaches you how to face the first draft and write the perfect query to target the right market. There is a seperate division on rights and contacts and how to keep records and go full-time freelancing. You also have a special chapter by Peter Bowerman, the 'Guru' of Cold-Calling Strategy and the author of THE WELL-FED WRITER.
It doesn't matter if you're a clueless layman, a budding freelancer or a veteran freelancer. This book serves both as an excellent introduction on the freelance writing biz for new writers and as a refresher for experienced ones. Don't miss it!
