This memoir by the daughter of one of America's most beloved sports heroes appears just in time for the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of major league baseball. Those expecting to find a darker side of the taciturn, dignified Jackie Robinson will be disappointed: Robinson, according to his daughter, was a devoted father and a civil rights activist whose messy rifts with more outspoken black leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X are barely mentioned here. Robinson was evidently a complex, deeply reserved man, and it seems likely that even his daughter, whose affection for her famous dad is obvious, did not know him well.

I guess I went into this book with the wrong expectations. I thought this would be a book about Jackie Robinson. But it was almost exclusively about Sharon, his daughter. And though she had an interesting life, I feel like her book didn't go far beyond the surface.
I felt like she really didn't know her father all that well, or at least she didn't express that in the story. I have no doubt that Jackie Robinson was as great a man as the public believed him to be. However after reading this book, it seems like Sharon got parts of her life from reading articles from past newspapers. I don't feel like I understand the workings of her family any better than I would if I had simply watched old news clips.
I wasn't ever bored with the book and I am glad that the Robinson's were a functionsl black family amidst so much external societal strife. Sharon does do a good job of showing the rest of us the priveleages and the tribulations of being the child of a famous African-A! merican in the 1950's and 60's. She also shows that there are still racial conflicts even when blacks and whites are on the same economic level. Overall its a B+, Robinson was not only a premiere ballplayer, but an outstanding father!

In a book which many might initially expect to be acontinuation of his highly-regarded _Other Destinies: Understanding the American Indian Novel_, Owens takes a large step forward before turning to bring his gaze to bear on the readers of American Indian novels. What do we expect to find in "Indian Territory?" And are Indian writers promoting "literary tourism," or are they appropriating the colonizers' language and creating something that is both fresh and disturbing to Indian and mainstream readers? Who reads these books, anyway? Who gets to review them, and who publishes them?
For scholars who have relied on Owens' steady voice, this book will be a wonderful gift. Several hard-to-find essays have been collected and reworked in this cornucopia of Owens material. While this is not a continuation of _Other Destinies,_ this text will most likely become its steady companion.
Owens examines closely several critical issues particular to mixedblood writers, and pushes some politically hot buttons in the process. Who may speak as an Indian for Indians, for mixedbloods, for the environment, for those who live in urban areas or on reservations? What are "terminal creeds" and why do Owens and his friend Gerald Vizenor oppose this form of thinking and representation? Readers will no longer be confused regarding these questions when they turn the last page before tucking _Mixedblood Messages_ onto the shelf between _Other Destinies_ and _Bone Game_.

This book is not a tutorial on safety plays, showing step-by-step procedures for handling them. Rather, it's a collection of hands that involve safety plays, and you have to figure out what the safety play is and how to work it. You do learn something out of the book, but you don't learn what you might think you're going to learn.

The hands cover a selection of problems, from card combinations, to avoiding loss of trump control, over ruffing, and other problems.
Its not focused only on "safety plays" like how to play A9xx opposite KJxx for one loser.
Overall, I liked most of the problems, and some were devious! :-)
I don't think I got good value for the money because there was lots of wasted space and pages, repeating the hand. The book could have contained 50 - 72 hands in the same space/size. If the price was $6 it would be more reasonable.
Worth reading, if its in the Library.

Certainly worth reading.
My only knock on the entire series is its a bit pricey, buying booklets, piece by peice, when several booklets could be included in one book.
At least combine the Technique booklet with the Test booklet.

One word of warning - the bidding is obsolete, so some
inferences/hand shapes are hard to determine
There are 50 declarer and 50 defense problems. They are tricky, but not very hard, like some of Hugh Kelseys problems.
The emphasis is on visualization, not squeeze play.
You need to think ahead and look at pitfalls.
Since the books is very inexpensive, and you get 100 problems, and the hands are generally pretty good, its great value for the money.
A solid intermediate level book.

This CD is an accurate representation of an even better book --- Cloud's voice is easy to listen to as he makes points that are illuminating for anyone interested in understanding the application of the principles of living a complete life.
