5 out of 5 stars Everything you wanted to know about the Kings and Queens of England.......2006-10-12

There is a lot of history in this book. Over 1500 years is covered. The author digs deep into history to give us the histories of the people that became the Kings and Queens of England from the reign of Egbert in the 800's to Queen Elizabeth II who is currently reigning.

The book is broken down into sections. The first section details the lives of the King or Queen in question. The next details the people that they married. The next is how the person died and where they are buried. The next section details wither the King or Queen had any illegitimate children.

Very informative book for people who are interested in the royal family or just want to learn more. It also has a family tree that connects the first King of England to Queen Elizabeth-fascinating stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Great Tidbits Of History.......2006-08-27

This is a fun book that gives interesting and little known facts occuring in the royal history of England. It ties together many unions, births, deaths and other important events of English royalty and lesser royals. It is an easy read and a great reference for understanding the royal succession.

5 out of 5 stars Chill out - people.......2001-04-03

Honestly, people - calm down. Did any of the previous readers/reviewers honestly expect a book with the title "Kings, Queens, Bones and Bastards" to be a flawless description of centuries of English history ? And that with scholarly accuracy and intellect ? Take it for what it is worth. Read the "Oxford Illustrated History of the British Monarchy" if you want accuracy. This book is a highly entertaining, easy read. I highly recommend it for its amusing anecdotes and enjoyable style.

3 out of 5 stars no murder happened in the corridor.......2000-09-26

leading to Princess Sophia Dorothea`s apartement.

In fact Count Königsmarck was last seen whe he left his house in Hannover on the evening of 11.July 1694. No corpse was ever found. Of course there were rumours all over the town that he had been assassinated and murdered and that his body had been thrown in the river Leine. But wether this had really happened an if it was being carried out on the instruction og George Ludwig (the latter George I) or his father Ernest Augustus, Elector of Hannover or the Countess of Platen (who was not only Königsmarck`s mistress but also Ernest Augustus`s) will never be known. Princess Sophia Dorothea was not divorced and put under house arrest in Ahlden because the dying Königsmarck was found lying before her bodouir But because she was forced to return to her father in Celle. This business was called run away and although she did not "flee" voluntarily and although of course her father turned her down she was accused of wilful deserting thus justifying George Ludwig to divorce her. As a note of history she became not only the mother of the english dynasty of Hannover but through her daughter, another Sophia Dorothea, the mother of the prussian dynasty of Hohenzollern.

But on the whole the book is remarkably enertaining and gives you a fascinating insight into 1500 years of englisch history.

2 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but has many mistakes of fact........2000-09-02

The book is entertaining but if your goal is the study of history, do not buy this book. It is, as another reviewer pointed out, full of mistakes. The first one I found (that stood out) was on page 10. The author states that Mary II (of William III and Mary II) was the sister of James II. She was, in fact, James II's daughter. William's mother, Mary, was the sister of James II and Charles II.

I also found that Hilliam's method of tracing the lines of descent of the various royal houses of Great Britain seemed designed to confuse, rather than enlighten, the reader. I think that it even confused the author himself(see page 10).

On the plus side, the sections on Bones and Bastards are entertaining to read, if you don't plan on using this book for research purposes.

      Product Description

There have been very few sportsmen in any area of endeavour who embodied the charisma and panache of Marquis Alfonso de Portago. For the fans and participants of motor sport, he arrived virtually overnight, and was suddenly on the world stage of racing. As soon as his racing exploits started to grab the attention of the press and public, his achievements in equestrianism became part of the growing legend. Then, with very little warning, he decided to enter a Spanish national team in the bobsled events at the 1956 Winter Olympics, and the Spanish novices nearly won. Portago was now a world class bobsledder. In the mid-1950s, he was a sporting superstar. He attracted beautiful women, and his romantic interludes also became part of the legend. Portago became a member of the elite Scuderia Ferrari after very few races. He was acknowledged as one of the best of the sports car racers of the time. Grand Prix success didnt seem very far beyond him either and several of his contemporaries said he was certainly World Champion material. In May 1957, at the age of 28, he started the worlds toughest road race, the Italian Mille Miglia. The race ended in a terrible crash which took the life of Portago, his co-driver and many spectators. This crash helped to end road racing altogether. In the following years, the legend grew, and became mythical. Countless stories were written about the sporting and sexual prowess of this handsome nobleman. The list of his alleged achievements grew as well, overshadowing the reality of the man. Ed McDonough has probed deeply into the life and times of the Marquis de Portago, met with his widow and other family and colleagues. This is the first fully researched biography of Alfonso de Portago. 206 pages including approx 300 photographs (B/W & Colour) of which many have never been seen before. 270mm x 230mm hardcased and jacketed. Book Description

Driven collects the best of internationally acclaimed racecar photographer Jesse Alexander's work taken between 1954-1962, the height of the golden age of the European Grand Prix. During the pinnacle of continental glamour, Alexander took his camera throughout Europe, following this intimate group of fearless racecar drivers from Grand Prix to Mille Miglia, and capturing their heroic wins and narrow defeats. In one photograph Jackie Stewart accepts the Grand Prix trophy cup from Prince Rainier and Princess Grace. Alexander's images hum with an energy and seduction second only to the sleek bodies and powerful engines of these now vintage Maseratis, Mercedes, Ferraris, and Porsches. His captions describe the renegade adventures, dangerous courses, and technological breakthroughs of the time. With an essay by world-class British racer Stirling Moss, Driven takes a nostalgic look back at the elegance and innocence of motorsport's most memorable years.

5 out of 5 stars Great period book!.......2000-12-22

The opportunity to view a collection from such a vibrant time in motorsports history, by a noted and aclaimed photographer, should be seized. Any die-hard racing enthusiast is certain to appreciate the many vantage points of the photos in gaining a sense of what the period was truly like.

5 out of 5 stars la Tour de Force Automobile.......2000-10-12

First, a disclaimer: my desk faces framed prints of Fangio at Monaco, 1956, and Fangio at Reims, 1958 by Jesse Alexander, and my copy of the sadly out-of-print LOOKING BACK is signed by the photographer and Juan Manuel Fangio. But even if names like Jean Behra and Wolfgang von Trips are unfamiliar, anyone with a love of sport and a sense of nostalgia for a less populated and more hopeful late '50's Europe will be enthralled by DRIVEN. Jesse Alexander's timing and composition are peerless, capturing not just the machines, but the souls of the men who risked their lives for sport in the optimistic days between the Second World War and Vietnam. The familiar images of Gurney, Moss, and Fangio brim with vigor and confidence. The images of the great Jimmy Clark verge on the iconic. Perhaps my favorite image is that of the Porsche team's garage at Le Mans in 1959: the French street urchins in the background are right out of the RED BALOON. I could go on, but perhaps the best review of the work in the book is the forward by Sir Stirling Moss, whose eloquent reminiscences and insights stand in stark contrast to the bone-headed comments we see from today's "Karting With Bernie" racing drivers. The layout and printing would be superb at four times the price--this book is a must-have, and the first edition is sure to sell out. If you love racing, buy it!

        Book Description

Available in a new, smaller format: the first authorized biography of the extraordinarily gifted sportsman, Stirling Moss. Moss drove professionally in nearly 500 races until his near-fatal crash in 1962, and his tally of wins was proportionally higher than any other driver's, by a wide margin. His entire life and career unfold in great detail: family history and school days, his start on the track and entrance to international competition, his experience driving for Mercedes, the private races, and the crash and recovery. Because the author enjoyed free access to every aspect of Moss's life, many of the amazing stories here have never been told before. Designed by David Costa, who created The Beatles Anthology.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A close-up look at one of the legends of the GP glory years........2005-12-22

I began to follow auto racing shortly after the 1962 accident at Goodwood that ended Moss's racing career, so I cannot say that I was ever a fan of Moss, only an admirer after-the-fact (as I also was of the German driver, Count Wolfgang von Trips). And I must admit I'm a sucker for just about any book about the pre-1970s era of Grand Prix racing.

This large, coffee-table-sized book tells Moss's story from beginning to end, not with an abundance of text, but with an abundance of photos, both black-and-white and color. Yes, there is text, but it is anecdotal rather than exhaustive or exhausting, and it does tell all we need to know about Moss's background, philosophy, personality, racing achievements, accidents, personal life, romances, and business activities.

There are many, many photos of Moss at all stages of his career, with particular attention paid to the Goodwood accident that nearly took his life, an accident that has always been shrouded in mystery and controversy. And - for the first time - some hitherto unpublished documents provide insight into what really happened on that gray day. And there is also another look at the infamous Le Mans crash that took the lives of Pierre Levegh and dozens of spectators.

My only complaint - and it is perhaps an inappropriate complaint regarding a book about Moss - is that there is too much Moss and too little of the other drivers who graced that bygone era. I would have liked to see more of Hawthorn and Fangio and Brooks and Schell and Bonnier and von Trips (althought we do see a photo insert of Trips' devastating crash at Monza). It was an era of great names and great faces and great personalities, and I would have liked the photographer's lens to range just a little bit wider.

But that is a mere quibble, and I can still recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of Moss or a fan of the pre-comercialized world of GP racing. In a few more years, there won't be many who will remember what it was like.

                      Book Description

The cinephobic novelist who complains to Fitzgerald's tycoon that he will never get the hang of scriptwriting wouldn't give a nickel for the movies. Yet never before the appearance of film had human perception been engaged in such an all-encompassing way by a single art form. In this ambitious investigation of a little-studied narrative genre, Gavriel Moses defines and explores "the film novel," a literary text in which cinema provides the thematic, formal, psychological, and philosophical center. Through close readings of works by the major representatives of the genre--Pirandello, Nabokov, Isherwood, West, Fitzgerald, Moravia, Percy, Puig--Moses develops a suggestive theory of novels that use literature to investigate the central role that film has acquired in human experience.
These novels, because of their fascination with filmmaker and spectator alike, and because they anticipate current views of the questions of cinema, remain a tangible presence within the repertoire of literary modernism. Offering insightful discussions of Laughter in the Dark, Lancelot, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and other film novels, Moses shows the depth of the exchange between literature and cinema and illustrates the extent to which the way we tell stories with words has been affected by the movies. His book will be of wide interest to literary scholars, film historians, and students of cinema and the novel.

3 out of 5 stars An excellent concept that suffers from printing problems........2006-09-28

The Secret of Zir'an presents a unique and creative world full of action and adventure. Players who enjoy the idea of a high magic Indiana Jones campaign set in a world on the brink of war will love this setting. The system offers speedy task resolution and gives players opportunities to creatively contribute to the game beyond die results.

Unfortunately, a printing problem and a few rules hiccups prevent this from being a perfect product.

4 out of 5 stars Nice depth, but character creation is a pain the first couple times........2005-09-29

::: :::SYSTEM::: ::: The system is quick and easy once you get a character made. It basically allow you to roll a ten sided dice, add a number to it, and try to make a target. If you exceed the target you may "upgrade" the effect that happens. Different skills allow different types of upgrades. It's basic and fast. Depending on your style of play you might love that swarms of low level characters die quickly at the hands of high level characters or you might hate it. It's really designed more for a fantastic adventure story than realistic combat.

::: :::SETTING::: ::: The setting is a world where WWII'ish era technology exist with magic an swordplay. There are dwarves, elves, beastmen, giants, and humans (although each has a "new" name that makes it a hit hard to remember which is which at first). Think tanks covered in rune plate armor. There's plenty of depth to the world and more is coming. Overall I think it had a Final Fantasy VII feel to it. It had technology, but a bad a** with a sword can still do some major damage.

::: :::CHARACTER CREATION::: ::: This has the be where the game is really fun and interesting, yet TERRIBLE to trudge through. You see there are minor complaints like the background on some of the chapters is text and makes it a headache to read. My major complaint was that in character creation they tell you to go to chapter XXX to find out how to fill out this little block of character info. If the book used page number references instead I would have loved it. Reading three quarters of a chapter to figure out how to fill in a stat bubble does teach you the system, but also caused me to take over three hours to make a character. Then when explaining how to make characters to my first group, again it took forever. Without page numbers listed expect to do plenty of reading the first few characters. The bright side is that the game uses character a "package" system to make characters. You don't have a "class", rather you choose packages that explain what your character spent their life doing. For example "Martial Artist" give you a set of skills to choose from, and takes so many years to learn. It really give your character a sense of history when created.

::: :::IN CLOSING::: :::: If you want something new, with a good world, interesting and quick game play, and plenty of character depth available go for it. If you're looking for realistic combat or something you can pick up and be playing in an hour or two, then this isn't it.

4 out of 5 stars Good Game, Poorly Edited.......2005-07-10

On the suggestion of a friend I picked this game up. Well to be honest, I downloaded a PDF first, cause I'm hesitant to just shell out forty bucks for a brand new game system. But it's definitely worth getting.

The game is very innovative. The finesse system makes using skills an interesting and more fluid process. Particularly nice is the concept of "finesse successes." Basically when you're attacking, unlike in other games, it matters whether you succed by 1 point or by 10. The world is quite intruiging and definitely has potential. An amount of material was clearly removed at the last minute and it certainly looks like more information on the world will be in the upcoming Hand of Fate book as well as the planned Atlas of Zir'an.

The main problem with the book is that it could have definitely benefitted from more editing. There are a few things about the game mechanics that are unclear and several sections are hard to read because of the background on the page. Still, the publishers are making every effort to rectify this. They have a solid presence on their online bullettin boards to answer questions and have offered the most obscured chapters for free download on their website.

The game definitely has a lot of potential and the Secrets of Zir'an core book is a good start.

                          Book Description

Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is the newest wave in productivity. This revolutionary approach is an outcome of lean thinking; however, PLM eliminates waste and efficiency across all aspects of a product's life--from design to deployment--not just in its manufacture. By using people, product information, processes, and technology to reduce wasted time, energy, and material across an organization and into the supply chain, PLM drives the next generation of lean thinking.

Now PLM pioneer Michael Grieves offers everyone from Six Sigma and lean practitioners to supply chain managers, product developers, and consultants a proven framework for adopting this information-driven approach. Product Lifecycle Management shows you how to greatly enhance your firm's productivity by integrating the efforts of your entire organization.

Most companies are seeing the returns of their efforts in lean methods diminishing, as the most fruitful applications have already been addressed. Here, Grieves reveals how PLM gives you an opportunity to make improvements both within and across functional areas in order to increase agility, optimize efficiency, and reduce costs across the board. He gives you the most comprehensive view of PLM available, fully outlining its characteristics, method, and tools and helping you assess your organizational readiness.

There's also proven examples from the field, where PLM is being widely adopted by leading companies, including General Motors, General Electric, and Dell, that are widely adopting the approach. You'll see how PLM has saved these companies billions in unnecessary costs and shaved as much as 60% off cycle times. With this book you'll learn how to:

Lean manufacturing can only take your organization so far. To bring your productivity to the next level and save remarkable amounts of time, money, and resources, Product Lifecycle Management is your one-stop, hands-on guide to implementing this powerful methodology.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly the next step for collaborative management.......2006-07-14

I think that Dr. Grieves book presents a compelling next step in how companies AND their outsourced suppliers can collaborate over the entire lifetime of the customer relationship to insure that customers continue to get satisfaction from their products.

Think about it this way: If you are buying a car that you are going to own for 5 years, don't you want to make sure that 4 years in to that ownership experience, the company that makes the fuel injection system has told the dealer about its new, updated software system for improving mileage . . . so you can get the benefit from it?

Without a unified approach to sharing information across functions and across time, there is no way the car company, the outsourced supplier and the dealer could make that happen. That is the essential breakthrough of PLM thinking, and Dr. Grieves does a great job of explaining it.

There is a lot of value here for companies in any industry that is characterized by a global, interconnected supply chain and a rapidly changing product lifecycle.

Grieves book on PLM is a fundamental primer on a subject basic to anyone involved devloping, marketing, buying and using a product. In other words, if your in business you should read this book. Importantly, his overview is comprehensive and provides a complete framework for understanding the scope and complexity of the practice in the modern manufacturing environment. The message is clear, you can't buy Product Lifecycle Management, you have to do Product Life Cycle Management. Whether your just beginning to look at PLM or are re-configuring your current capabilities, I would recomend everyone involved give this book a thorough read. I know my team will.
